Thanks for helping educate the world about proper dress. Wear socks. Please. The universe will reward you. I used to wear a suit and tie while traveling as a college student--not only did I enjoy dressing up to travel (when I was a little kid, everybody did, and I remembered that), but back in those days it was also a sure way not to get carded in airport bars and on the airplane. But I also discovered that I frequently got 1st class upgrades for free just by asking. Probably wouldn't happen today, though, since upgrades are so formalized and highly coveted. And airport bars now card me even though I'm starting to show some gray in my hair...
I was wondering - could you maybe share some more information on the clubs you were talking about or maybe you are even planning to do a video on this topic, seeing as they appear to be an integral part of british and western culture.
DaInsano There’s a good book called ‘The Gentlemen’s Clubs of London’ by Anthony Lejeune which will tell you all you need to know. There are also a couple of good Wikipedia articles under ‘Gentlemen’s Clubs’. These are exclusive places where you have to be proposed and seconded for membership and have absolutely nothing to do with nightclub type places. They keep themselves very discreet (most do not even have a nameplate on the door) and I doubt Kirby would be able to breach that discretion by doing a video on them. Most are in beautiful old buildings and some (like the Reform Club and the Travellers Club) have been used as film sets (Harry Potter and James Bond).
I can't imagine to leave my house without socks. In my personal opinion, it's not some decorative element of dressing but a necessity, except for the beach or something like that. I don't speak of an extremely cold russian winter, but in summer when the weather is very hot, good silk socks make your legs feel less tired. And I've noticed an interesting thing about a tie. In late fall/early winter a simple tie is a good protection from cold, better then even a scarf weared without a tie. Traditional men's suite developed in centuries is above all practical.
Alex K You make some very interesting and thoughtful comments here. You are absolutely 100% correct that PROPER socks actually keep one cooler in the summer, even if they are over the calf. It is only when one wears poorly-knit, thick cotton socks that they become more uncomfortable in the summer. Silk socks are exceptional in the summer! As are linen socks. Conversely, wool or cashmere socks in the wintertime serve as an additional layer and protection against the elements (as do dress boots). Men are, above all else, practical. And there is no question that the genesis of many elements of classic style were at first pragmatic.
My first education was a technologist, so I always try to ask yourself the question: why? And in your videos you always explain why you are doing this and not otherwise. I like it and it makes me think deeper. Unfortunately I've never weared a linen socks. I will try it if I could find it here. As for silk, it seems to me that it works like a fleece fabric or something like this. It takes a moisture away of the feet. Although, probably, on the contrary: the fleece developers found that idea of silkworms:D. In wintertime I use a thin socks knitted from cashmere and silk mix, because of its better durability. They keep my feet warm up to -4 F. Such frosts in winter are not uncommon. The main thing is to wear shoes with sufficiently thick soles. Some English shoemakers make classic shoes with fur lining, but they need a very long time to dry.
Hi Kirby, I’m retread was, but WOW, I could have use you 40 years ago when I was in sales. I always bought the best clothing and shoes I could afford. At one time I had 12 pair of Allen Edmonds that I bought at their store in Wisconsin. I always bought my clothing at Nordstrom’s. Even now, living in Mid Michigan in the woods, I just bought a custom made blue blazer and another suit jacket. I firmly believe every Man should have a $1,200.00 blue blazer. Now though I wear boots and 511 brand pants. I hope you continue to do well. Have you ever thought off having a series of videos aimed at high school seniors? Thanks for all your work. I really enjoy watching them. I pass some on to young friends of mine.
Hi Kirby, I have a question about something you said in this video. You said your first suit was a charcoal herringbone and that you suggest a charcoal or navy suit for someones first suit. My question is, as a guy looking to buy his first suit, is a charcoal birdseye to bold? I feel like the birdseye stands out a bit more than the herringbone. I really like the birdseye but want to make sure it will be as versatile. Thanks
I often comment to my wife when I come home from even a simple trip to the grocery store that I was treated differently, in a better way, because I was in a suit and tie.
Good evening, I was wondering about many of the background songs that you use in your videos. They sound fantastic, perhaps you would be kind enough to provide us, viewers, with said songs?
I agree that the sock-less look is unsightly. Can you talk about the clubs you belong to in NYC with a strict code? I find that there is no restaurant, no matter how fine that enforces dress code anymore (they should). I am glad to hear there are still places with standards
i have a new question about these clubs you mentioned in this and previous videos, kirby. what are they, how does one become a member, and what type of activities take place there?
Unfortunately, Reviewbrah does not care a single ounce about classic aesthetics (from what I can tell by my experience viewing his videos). Reviewbrah is working on a different level in which he satisfies his personal dress goals without the need to have anybody agree with his style in a historical sense or a modern sense. Kirby would have as much in common with a gutter punk as with Reviewbrah. But I do agree; a collab between these two youtube greats would be monumental!
Thank you for these great videos which I find very helpful. Can you please comment on the recent trend for slim fit jackets and trousers. Personally, I just don’t like tight fitting clothes. Thanks.
Hi Kirby, why do you have an hour glass on your desk? Is it just decorative or do you use it for a special reason- like getting up from the desk to stretch or to remind yourself to drink more water? Thanks, James
Hey Kirby, thanks for another great video. Can you tell us how to take care of the shoe lining? I've seen many videos and posts about upper, but haven't seen any for the lining.
Hi Kirby, what type of suit do you think is the most appropriate for a university graduation event? I want to be dressed formal but not over the top. Thanks
Given the no sock question, iI feel I have to ask: where do you stand on the topic of socks with sandals? Personally, I do wear them together (shock! horror!), but I get incredibly sweaty feet so it's a lot cleaner (I also almost never wear shorts).
Question: what shoes do you suggest for rainy city like Seattle? I like good leather shoes, but i really dont have extra 30 min per day to shine them. Is there any more water-resistant shoe you will recommend?
Kirby, here is the thing. I work at a cellphone store. They just switched us from polo and dress pants/shoes to a tshirt with jeans uniform. I still want to look nice. What kind of dress shoes go good with a black tshirt and what color Jean's compliment them? If it isnt possible, why kind of dark tennis shoe or regular shoe do you reccomend. #DislikeTShirtUniforms
I’d recommend a dark indigo pair of jeans - they dress up easily - with a dark brown pair of semi-brogue shoes. I’ve never heard of a t-shirt and jeans uniform, though!
@@richardbennett8906 I know this is late but if you want to look put together you could wear dark blue jeans with brown or black chelsea boots. Or maybe a chukka boot. Or black jeans with a black chelsa boot. Basically any kind of leather boot that is more casual.

Any tips for dry cleaning ties? I find when I do it they come back flattened and shiny.
Hi Kirby, what type of suit do you think is the most appropriate for a university graduation event? I want to be dressed formal but not over the top. Thanks
A navy blazer with chinos, and a slim tie, perhaps? This will make you look elegant, yet not overdressed. Just my two cents. :)
Isaiah Trofimenko 💯 Great recommendation!
Spare sock in the briefcase - NOTED!

How about a woven shoe instead? Still allow air flow but wouldn't scream beach wear. Just a thought, hope helps.
I wear a size 5 shoe. Needless to say it is almost impossible to find quality shoes. Any advise without going full bespoke?
Check into Japanese brands they have several very high end brands.
I just have to ask: How are you a size 5?
I wish some in formal places had better requirements for dress.
