    I love that you brought up third spaces!! I own a tiny coffee shop in Europe and this is honestly my contribution to the world lol. So many people benefit so much from having this cozy safe place where they know they're welcome to come and relax and hang out and chit chat and eat something and no one is rushing them to leave. I see every day how important it is for people to have a place to go.

    The "How I got abs" ones always get to me because, like you mentioned, genetics play a big part. At my lowest bodyweight, undergoing chemo, I still had some fat pouch on my lower belly region. I was really skinny but that did mot go away. Years later, remembering that has allowed me to accept that my training and nutrition are likely not gonna make it go away if 1.5 years of chemo didn't. It's how my body is built and it's fine. Now, I workout to get stronger abs, and if they are not visible, oh well it's whatever

    13:45 I can see what you mean by the vibes being a bit off. Saying that "I didnt work this hard for my looks" despite having the looks makes it sound like "its because you don't work as hard as me that's why your physique is not as good". Also the last bit saying "you deserve bigger goals than looks" also can sound pretty uppity. People do train for looks and that's completely fine! No need to say that aesthetic goals are goals that "don't matter" just because it's not as daunting as running 100 miles. Great video Justina thank you!

    I am overweight and I have been active for 6 years now. I can't do any of the 10 requirements of that Fisher guy. I went to the gym and made progress, lost weight. How he wrote 'should be able to do' makes me feel really excluded and it's just harsh. It is not framed as 'goals', it is framed as strict and rigid requirements which makes people demotivated

    Recognising hunger cues and eating the right food at the right time is way more difficult than people realise. We get so used to eating when we're tired, bored, upset, sad, or even happy that sometimes we forget what it means to just eat when you're hungry and eat until you're full. The goal isn't really to never feel hungry or never want to eat anything. It's more about understanding your bodies needs and fulfilling them!

    The girl with abs calling herself “embarrassing” when she still had abs but saw herself as bloated…she’s basically calling anyone who looks like that disgusting. My abs tend to look a lot like her “puffy-ass bloated” version. Way to spread your eating disordered and body dysmorphic tendencies and trigger young girls! 🙄 sheesh. Nothing’s ever good enough is it? I agree with you about that video just being sad. It just frustrates me that people post shit like that to trigger young girls/women who are the most impressionable. totally agree on the Doc Liss video- she could have handled this so much better. I think the commenter was trying to be nice so the better way to handle this might be thank you but I’m not training for aesthetics and then maybe educate on having performance goals and focusing on what your body can do rather than just what it looks like. Re: the Equinox tiktok, I think it's also really bad behaviour to film people who are just existing in public without their consent. They were napping and removed their shoes and this was distasteful to the creator. They weren't actively harming anyone and filming and posting them to a presumably large audience even if they hid their face? Is way more distasteful imo

    Until just recently, my body never gave me hunger cues. I would go HOURS without eating because I never felt hungry. My husband had to remind me to eat (the ADHD hyperfocus is so real), which is a miserable place to be in.
    I am still recovering from ED, and I always will be to some degree, but getting a specialist helped me a ton. She prescribed metformin, and no joke, I've been off it for some time and now I recognize hunger cues about 80% of the time, compared to maybe 20% or 30%.
    My body giving me hunger cues changed my entire life. I have more energy, my mood is better (part of that is the antidepressants too), and I can do more than just work and lay around because I'm exhausted.

    Really enjoy your videos! I would love to hear more about training in the gym to maximise health benefits when you are not interested in lifting as heavy as you can. Do you have to progressive overload forever to have those benefits or is there a more casual option for those of us whose only goal is just to be healthy and exercise enough to be strong in day to day life. I just want exercise enough to be healthy and eat cake!

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  23 дні тому +1

      I think the first thing to realize is that going to the gym doesn't equal lifting as heavy as you can. Most of my sessions are 60-70% intensity, with a few each month reaching 80-90%. And on that same note, progressive overload isn't just adding weight week after week. It's simply about progressing strategically over time to maintain and/or adapt to your current goals. I made a video all about this recently :)

    Haven't watched it all the way through yet, but I have a few things to say:
    Creatine: I took it during a time where I was more consistent than ever, but not consistent enough to make a big difference. However, what it did do, was set me up for the day. Every morning I drank my huge glass of creatine and took my vitamins which were two positive habits to check off from my to do list. Did I still kinda waste my money because I wasn't training at my fullest potential yet? Sure. Did it have some benefits? Yes, although likely placebo/mentality wise.
    "I wish I had that body": I feel like some people need to realize that comparison isn't even an issue if you know how to separate it from judgement. Me saying "I wish I looked like that" doesn't mean I hate myself, it just means that I like the way you look/your body has the same features as my personal goals. It doesn't mean that I think your body was just handed to you either. I also thought she gave off judgy vibes, but it definitely felt like insecurity. If someone makes a positive comment about your body and you feel the need to write multiple paragraphs about how hard you worked, it just feels off.

    Love your videos! Just to note: where I live, we have lots of “third spaces”. No one is rushing me. Maybe try a smaller town? The rest of america is not like New York or LA. The pace of New York makes me anxious, I actually hate it.

    The man one with what women should be able to do is lowkey crazy. I’ve been lifting for 3 years (f’ed around and wasn’t consistent for a year so we’ll say 2 years) and it probably took me 1.5-2 years to hit those strength metrics. Whereas touching your toes would be something that takes 1-2 months to do. I still can’t do some of these metrics (1 pullup, 1/2 bodyweight farmers walk even tho my grip strength has gone wayyyy up). Unless this guy was basing these metrics off of a 120 lb woman or something (which I wouldn’t put past him) it’s not really realistic to expect that out of the average woman

    If the jiggle plates make you more flexible then it must confuse your nervous system. I come to that conclusion since we know flexibility is mainly controlled by feedback from the nervous system (spinal cord)

    Are we just going to skip over how animal diet girl said she lost 80 lbs on the “animal” way since June and then threw up “before” the animal diet photos that were obviously not 80 lbs heavier? I am not dissing her body and maybe I heard that part of the video wrong but talk about sharing dangerous “results”! Maybe I missed something in there but, whew. Oh, and as a T2 diabetic, if I hear one more creator demonize sugars - something that at certain points can save my life when my glucose drops dangerously low - I may scream! The amount of time that my overnight emergency Skittles jar or the emergency lifesavers in my gym bag have saved me is astounding. Love the content!

    Also how arbitrary is that man's list? Please create a baseline for men full of random shit that women are more likely to train for or be physically capable of. "Hey bro you aren't fit if you can't do 16 pirouttes fouettés, hula hoop for ten minutes and hold a baby or small dog on each hip." I note btw that he includes pull ups and push ups (fine exercises that I love but let's not pretend that men don't have a significant physical advantage in performing these) but doesn't include e.g. hip thrusts, which many men consider girly.

    I learned that a “farmer’s walk” exists.😊
    You introduced me to some more sane fitness folks.
    Could you please do a video about jumping rope? I started jumping with something similar to Rhino Rope for 10 minutes😂 along with a 10 minute workout with dumbbells for two days a week. If you did one and I missed it, could you please provide the link?

    Always love these videos. Question about Creatine, when you say consistent with workouts, do you mean heavy lifting workouts? I am consistent working out everyday, but it's not always with weights. Thanks.

    • @richardcaraballo1185
      @richardcaraballo1185 27 днів тому

      Unless by not using weights you mean you do calisthenics, pretty sure the workouts they're referring to are weight training. You don't need to lift every day though, 3-5x a week is sufficient as long as you're consistent with it. And if the creatine supplementation isn't an issue for you then go for it. Just don't think it's going to make a monumental difference.

    21:20 partly agree. Since I started to always eat something protein and carb rich directly after my workout (or in the first half hour after my workout, I feel much better and it feels like I can recover faster. Be it strength or high intensity training.

    Late commenting on this but I definitely ate too much and gained weight when breastfeeding (just to keep up my supply 😂) - my babies weren’t that hungry! Also what no one tells you is sometimes even without putting on weight - your frame gets bigger after pregnancy. My hands and feet are bigger - have to take a bigger shoe and glove since and my general frame is bigger. I’m not American but felt very despondent on Thursday morning (Australia time) sending love to all Americans ❤

    🙋‍♀️ Need ideas on how to stay fit in a small town, the nearest gym is 20 minutes away, and that distance has been such a barrier for me! I’m only in this small town for a few more years while I finish my degree and there’s only so much at home workouts I can do!

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  26 днів тому +1

      maybe see if there's anything "fun" movement-wise you can do a few times a month (group class, hike, run club, etc.)! otherwise, i'd recommend staying motivated at home with really specific skill goals. push ups, pull ups, kettlebell skills, etc. I always find if I'm working toward something rather than aimlessly, i'm much more likely to stay invested :)

    I was glad to see the pushback on Alyssa last time, as I’ve followed her for years and am definitely guilty of being drawn to the “grit” mindset lol, and needed a reality check.
    As someone who receives a lot of unwanted comments/attention to their body and solely goes to the gym to tame the beast of chronic musculoskeletal pain, I can resonate with some of the energy in the carousel, but she definitely comes off harsh.
    To paraphrase what I’ve heard Jordan Lips share: you can admire someone’s physique, their strength, their VO2 max, whatever, but to envy what they have means accepting EVERYTHING that comes along with it. All the behind-the-scenes hard work, sacrifices and setbacks, do you envy that also? Probably not.
    So when I’m walking down the street and someone goes “looking good sweetheart” I resist the urge to scream “well that’s GREAT because my neck, shoulders, back, ribcage, hips, and ankles are definitely NOT feeling great, but I’ll take that into consideration!”

    I love all your videos but I especially love the ones where you debunk all the influencers spouting nonsense. After watching your videos, I’ve just started working out with dumbbells, just 2kg (about 4.5 pounds) ones at this point, because I have zero upper body strength after rupturing a bursar in my shoulder and discovering calcification of the tendons in that same shoulder in 2018. It took four years before I had zero pain in that shoulder, but I’ve lost so much strength in it. I can lift heavier below but not above my shoulder, so I’m starting with very low weights.

    The Lemme products have been debunked so many times too. The studies they do reference, the quantity of active ingredients in the gummies are 3x-4x lower than the amount that might cause what they claim. Supplement companies have been crazy lately. 😅

    This Ryan Fisher person’s list doesn’t make sense to me honestly. I’ve only just recently worked my way up to bench press 70 percent of my body weight, BUT I can squat 130 percent (when he says you should be able to do ‘just’ your bw). However, I still can’t do an unassisted pull-up - despite the fact I’m meeting his bench press benchmark and exceeding the one for squats by 30 percent.
    What I’m trying to say is the criteria he gives for upper and lower body strength don’t compare imo. They just seem pretty random to me or possibly based off what men can do? Which doesn’t compare either bc women tend to be stronger in their lower and men in their upper body. So yep, all in all it just doesn’t make much sense to me 😬

    • @JustinaErcole
      @JustinaErcole  27 днів тому +2

      ooh this is a great point! I feel like the 70% makes more sense for men since they (typically) have more upper body strength than women.
