The tamron is a great lens optically, actually tested sharper than the GM! Yes...it is actually sharper especially into the corners. Another thing against the GM..it has a known back focus issue with many sony full frame bodies. Id avoid the GM as its due for a refresh (mkii version?) And get the Tamron. Its a gem

First of all, I have to say that you look great Evelyn and I am glad that the baby arrived safely during this stressful time. I am sure that she is taking your mind off of the lockdown! Congratulations to the whole Drake ( now complete!) family!
As for the Tamron, I almost pre ordered it but am am not as bullish on it as I was about the 28-75 and 17-28 zooms. I was hoping that it would be smaller than my Sony 70-200 f4 ( it is, but only by a smidge) and I think giving up the lens IS , the internal zoom, the various control buttons and the tripod collar plus the extra telephoto zoom ( and the build quality!) are too much of a trade off for getting f2.8 vs f4, especially for a daytime walkaround and landscape lens. I might change my mind once I can actually test one out in person. I would love for you to do a head to head comparison of the Tamron to the Sony f4 telephoto in a future update ( especially for the image quality.) I think that quite a few people will be in the same frame of mind as the weight,. size and price of the Sony 70-200 f4 is more in line with the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 than the G Master. The macro feature of all of these newest lenses being released is a nice bonus, though! So nice to see you back!

Buying the a7iii+Tamron Trinity is around the same price of an old XT3+Fujifilm Trinity.
IMHO I think the Sony ecosystem is unbeatable when it comes to the cost/performance ratio.
Yes Sir, A7iii having 2.35x larger sensor than APSC XT3, and their prices being same, Sony is a steal. If we compare XT4, Sony is even cheaper ... (including Tamron Trinity).

I ended up getting the 70-200mm F2.8 GM on the used market. Was only 2500 CAD. Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 is overpriced in Canada when you look at exchange rate.
Same and I have no regrets even though it was more expensive!!

I’m torn... I travel and I need the light weight and the small size. But I also shoot fast moving cars quite often and the stabilization would definitely help. I have a buddy who just bought the GM, so, I can at least try that lens first.
In reality, I am limited for space in my backpack, weight really is an issue and I know that Tamron will be great on the a7III and also a great match with the a6600. Both those cameras have IBIS (which does help), and the light weight 6600 would pair up great with the Tamron and offer a 270mm reach.
... I think I know what I need to do! If I need the 70-200 GM, I’ll rent it. 👍

Well, i currently own both the 17-28mm and the 28-75 rxd, and i am impressed with the results coming from these new tamron lenses. As a 70-200 i currently use the Canon f4 with IS, and with the sigma mc11 it works like a charm honestly. But considering the extra stop, weight, and just awesome output and performance of the other 2 tamrons, i might consider this 70-180mm..

Seems the tameron 70 180 2.8 810 g lens is good for portraits, animals, some sports. Will it work for landscape in manual f11 vs the heavy, large 150 500 1880g tameron. I use sony a7r3, have only 16-35 f4,85 1.8, tameron 90 2.8 and want to try landscape and exterior buildings . My bad back makes the weight of the 150 500 a concern.
I also have the rx100 vii with 24 200 20 mp built-in

I think the Tamron is fine, but a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 is rumored to be on its way and that might be better. I would really like to complement either of them with the Sony 200-600mm.
if tamron keeps making smaller and even smaller good quality lens for mirrorless camera, they will be the ultimate lens maker in the future … period … cause that’s what everybody wants … who wants a big fat heavy expensive sony lens on a tiny mirrorless body!!!

Everybody? Speak for yourself. I want lenses with top IQ and no compromises for me, Sigma is the ONE. Respect that other people have different needs than you do.

I’ve got the Sony but I’ve ordered the Tammy. I intend to use the Tammy Holy Trinity as my everyday carry and the GM for events. One thing I like about the Sony is that I can remove the tripod mount and attach my Blackrapid strap directly to the lens.
Since I recently bought the Sony 18-105/4.0 and am meddling about in the APS-C league, I am set in that sort-of-range compared to my economic situation. Not that I'd say no to either of the tested lenses if offered for (next-to) free! And since I'm living the that outlier country of Sweden when it comes to covid-19 I'm doing just fine... A bit miffed the planned 2020 trip to Canada got postponed, but...

Great review! I’ve got an a7iii, using the Tamron 28-200 to shoot middle school indoor sports (basketball) and have problems in low light. I’m planning to upgrade to the 70-180, and your real world review with the apparent auto focus upgrade and 2.8 has helped me to decide!

I will be pre-ordering this lens. I don't care about the extra 20mm and my Sony a6600 has IBIS. Not only that but I'm buying it for family and individual portraits which I take outside so I should have sufficient shutter speed. There have been so many reviews saying this lens produces good image quality and it's sharp. I wish it was a bit less expensive but at least I can scrape up enough cash to buy it unlike the Sony which is clearly out of my reach.
I personally bought the 70-200 GM (from TCS on Boxing day last year) already so the tamron wasn't available and after looking at the reviews online for the Tamron I'm going to stick to the GM despite the extra size and weight. I like the extra controls and buttons, built in OSS and really wanted the teleconverter support the GM supports. Also 1 thing most don't seem to mention is the focusing ring of the GM is mechanically connected to the front focus motor not electronically connected so focus can be adjusted manually and linearly at any time.
Just ordered the Tamron 70-180 to go with my Sigma 24-70 F2.8 on my A7IV. Looking forward to it, waited and waited for a Sigma E Mount 70-200 range F2.8 and just got fed up of waiting.

I don't own any Sony products currently. I watch your reviews because I like your presentations. Your format is fairly simple and uncomplicated and that appeals to me.
As for the virus, speaking selfishly this thing could have held off for a few more years. I'm 68 and at best I've got 8-12 more years left. I'm just a little pissed that I've got maybe 2 years out from now wasted waiting for a vaccine or at least an effective treatment for this f&^%#&g virus.

If this happened in the '90s, I'd have wholeheartedly agreed. Fortunately we have all sorts of tech around to help make the world smaller. I've been talking with my dad and grandad more than ever (although we're already divided by the Atlantic already) and spending so much more time with my own little family, not wasting 2 hours a day on commuting but still being productive makes it much better. Not having access to a gym hurts a bit, but it's got us considering if we can move to permanent work from home situations that moving to somewhere less built up would be more possible.
I do miss watching sport, especially that my grandad's team was so close to being league champions for the first time in my memory is just cruel too.
Another thing you didn't discuss, by only being 180mm instead of 200mm you have to get closer to the subject for the same framing as 200mm, resulting in more background separation and blur. Which is nice as hell.
Nice review. The only thing I would disagree with is the image stabilization being a problem. In my testing I was able to get tac sharp images at 1/30th because of the IBIS in the A7R4. so not much to worry about there. Regarding video, this lens is small enough to fit on my gimbal as well! So this is truly a no brainer! Thanks again for the great review.

I did a lot of research on my own and the Tamron will be arriving at my door tomorrow.
I’ve certainly noticed the focus & zoom controls on my Sony & Tamron are opposites. So it does cause me to make the mistake of mixing the controls up if I don’t look and check. A big difference in price is in tamron’s favour. Thank you for your knowledge and recommendations.

I was considering the Tamron, then figured that it'd take forever to get since I hadn't preordered it, so I just ordered the 135GM instead. A bit of an impulsive, quarantine boredom-fuelled decision, but I don't think I'll be disappointed :)
The 135mm GM is an amazing lens.
5:00 the difference in contrast between the two images really makes the sony look like the tamron photo was shot on any old camera. Whereas the Sony looks like a magazine photo. Is this all down to the lens or are they processed differently?
The exposure settings were identical and they were straight out of camera images (no processing) It's possible that my subjects head was in a slightly different position in relation to the sun in the examples. But, I saw similar results in a few samples when shooting directly into the sun. If you are shooting normally, like I did with most of the other shots, the difference in contrast is not very noticeable between the lenses. It's only a bit of an issue in this specific circumstance.

Nice review 👍🏻 one important factor regarding the weight: I’ve tried both Sony 70-200 lenses and the f.28 would be exhausting carrying around for an extended period of time. The Tamron size/weight is exactly why I’m leaning towards it. Especially if you’re into hiking or anything outdoors where you’re carrying all your gear. The F2.8 feels like a manhole lid hanging from your neck 🤣 I love my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 even without all the bells and whistles.
Thanks for this review of the Tamron 70-180. I like lenses that lean towards less weight, size and cost plus having a good constant maximum fast aperture like 2.8. This lens has all of that.

There is a way too use the Sony teleconverters and this is true with all brands, lenses, and bodies. Just use an extension ring behind the lens. That provides the distance the teleconverter requires. It does reduce the aperture a bit more, but has the advantage of increasing the macro capabilities. However, extension tubes prevent the lens reaching infinity focus, although, depending on the subject distance and aperture, the depth of focus may well extend to infinity from a point that is not technically infinity focus. Oh the joys of working within the compromises needs to get photographs :)
The quality seems really good, though I wonder about the lack of OIS if you want to take images indoors without a speedlight. While OIS does not do anything for subject motion, it also does not mean that the subject needs something like 1/300s shutter speed. OIS helps to keep the focus more on what is needed to freeze the action of the subject without much concern for the camera or lens. Anyway, awesome review and I would live to see them come out with an OIS version. Other than that, I wonder if they would be willing to include a sample raw file of anything that can be examined for fine detail/ sharpness, and if possible, 1 additional for bokeh.

I have an A7c, and this is about as big as I'd go. I'd probably choose a Sony 70-200 F4. Image stabilization is more important than larger aperture. Congratulations on your (2 year old now)great job as always!
As a event photographer for over a decade I disagree that having the Sony 70-200 would be desirable. When you work a wedding your working 12 hour day. You have flashes, you may have strobes. Your carrying two bodies and extra lenses. The tamron holy trinity is the size of Fuji zooms. By the time you hit the reception where you need that 70-180 your dead tired if you’ve been shooting the 70-200 it feels like picking up a weight again and again. And who cares about the lack of stabalization. You’ll be shooting at speeds above 1/60 so that the people aren’t blurred. Either lens would be an ace for wedding but I’d give the edge to the tamron. The only flaw in the tamron system is between the cross over with the 17-28 and 28-75. The 28-75 lacks the extra wide that you will need through out the day. And the 17-28 lacks 35 for proper elegant environmental portraiture. The 28 is too weird and journalistic for proper portraits through out the day. This means you will be bouncing between those two lenses in the day where as with Sony the 24-70 is sufficient wide to leave on all day. Or if you’re going wide you have 35 on the 16-35

I’m completely new into mirrorless. So far committed to buy a A7R II and the Zeiss T* 35mm 2.8. I think it’s a really good alternative for the Leica Q and far more versatile.
Will definitely get the 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G OSS for moon and sun shots.
And for something in between, this Tamron seems the answer. Adds a lot of versatility in a light package.
I’m not sure will get used to EVF, so the 3 lens setup should do fine, though it’s strange to be without a fast prime.
Or maybe should go the 135mm 1.8 GM route?
I never use the EF 2x II with the Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS II, but if I didn’t have the 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II, probably would use it.
I had the impression there’s a really small difference between the 135mm 2.0L and the 70-200 at 135. And maybe it will be almost the same comparing the 135mm 1.8 GM and the 70-180 at 135mm.

The 70-180 seems the right choice and with the resolution of my R2 I can easily crop my way to 200 if I need to. Ha ha cry cry... TMI indeed; poor Jordan.

You keep going about stabilization for events. First MOST sony camera already have stabilization and plus stabilization does not freeze the world so the little advantage of combining ibis with the lens stabilization will hardly matter when you are keeping shutter speeds at a decent speed to take photos during events since people are hardly going to freeze for you.
I preordered the 70-180. I shoot 99% stills, mostly outside. I'm not concerned about the lack of OSS. My a6500 IBIS should be enough. I like the size and weight.
I was thinking about getting this lens in the future. I like the 28-75. 2.8. I use my Tamron 70-200 2.8 sp2 with MC-11 adapter and it works fine.

I shoot gigs and I had the Sony 70-200 f/2.8 (gen 1) and wasn't that impressed so ended up selling it, where as I'm much happier with the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Okay totally different lenses, but I don't miss the lack of IS on the Tamron when shooting on an A9 or an A9ii, so I wouldn't say that is a reason to choose the Sony over the Tamron for events. Looking at my lenses that I used for gigs, they are mostly fast primes, at f/1.8 or faster and none of them have IS. I just have two bodies, one wide, one long. I will probably get another 70-200-ish lens at some point as there are times when having a zoom is a big advantage and I'll probably end up with the Tamron - it has very good image quality and I quite like having a lighter lens. Can't see me buying the gen 2 version of the Sony 70-200 though unless someone else is paying for it.

Tamron has come out with some wonderful lenses for the Sony and other systems. I'd love to see them introduce a light weight and affordable long telephoto lens - something like a 200-600mm!
Question would the 70-180 2.8 be better for portraits at 180 wide open than a 55mm 1.8 with the added compression or would the 1.8 give better bokeh?
Honestly, the only time I would choose the Sony lens is if I was a pro or had unlimited funds. Otherwise the price difference enables a purchase of some other nice lens e.g. a real macro lens. Totally agree with you on the weight etc. Walking around with the Tamron is way more comfortable.

Did you get a chance to compare focus breathing or how parfocal the lenses are? These would be two things of interest to those who might be looking to shoot video with the lenses. Also, did you get a chance to test magnification at the LONG end of the lens at MFD? I know some lenses act like they have a shorter max focal length when zoomed and shooting at their MFD?

The contrast part looks sketchy. The Sony shot clearly has the sun behind your son's head, where the Tamron shot has it above the head (and a little bit to the right). I don't own either of them but I haven't seen any lens which would hold contrast THAT well when shooting right against the sun. So I think this part is a little misleading. I would still love to find out how they compare in terms of ghosting and veiling flare. Thank you for the review!

I am using Sony 2.8 and one reason for spending so much on the lens is that I can use it with the 1.4 teleconverter. Third party brands are slow to come up with lenses for Sony.

Will you consider to do the comparison between the Tamron and the Sony 70-200mm f4. I know a lot of people said it is two different category of product. (I don’t know why nobody comment about the comparison of Sony f2.8 vs f4.) For the size and price, Sony 70-200 f4 is quite similar to Tamron. Also one of the advantage of Sony f4 is stabilisation. It can compensate at least one stop of exposure.
For me, I never considered the f4 because I want to use the lens in less than ideal light and fairly high shutter speeds - where OIS isn't that useful as it can't prevent the subject from moving. If you're not dealing with moving objects though, I'm sure the f4 is fine. There. Perfect comparison.

I LOVE this video. Very informative. I know that no one is able to test for this right now, but I am eager to find out how this holds up in an ice arena shooting hockey. I imagine the loss of 20mm isn't the end of the world, but any insight would be amazing!
I did some lowlight testing. I think it would do well as long as you use it on a camera with IBIS.
