I honestly did not test it all that carefully since I was focused on functions of the lens itself. But, I will say that with slow, medium and faster shutter speeds, I never saw an out of focus shot that I didn't expect to be out of focus for some other reason. Can't say more than that though, sorry.

Thanks for watching! I did actually ask my contact within Tamron and he wasn't sure (I guess he's only on the marketing side of things?) I will definitely continue to try and find information though.
Scott, I am sorry to say that, being a Sony shooter, I was not familiar with you. I must tell you, however, that I am truly impressed by you and the review. Are you sure you don’t want to change to Sony? Also, another person stated, your kids are adorable.
Hahaha, I really appreciate that! I'll have to step up my Canon reviews then ;) I did enjoy my time with the camera and lens though! Appreciate the compliment as well :)
It sounds like this would be a good lens for tourists to have on their camera. And if they need a wide-angle picture they can just use their smartphone's camera.
Re: Tamron. I had G2 70-200 on my Canon. It de-calibrated very quickly in Bali''s sun and ruined my photo shoot. Lens cap broke after half a year, Hood was coming off to easily when bounced against my hip during carrying camera on shoulder strap & that lese was focusing breathing Heavily making portraits shoots on 200mm look like they were shoot at around 160mm. I switched to sony and now only shoot with GM lenses. Wonder however if this lense focus breath and what is it price. 70-200 GM 2.8 is way to expensive and heavy for me and might give a try to Tamron again. Thanks for a review :D
Michal Sas Tymowski really?? I’m really sorry to hear about that. I have tested the canon versions extensively but I’ve of course not used it over as long of a time and in as challenging of situations as that. Hope you were generally just incredibly unlucky. I did mean to test focus breathing and honestly it just slipped my mind. I’ll see what I can do to take a look at it. Price wise, I’m not sure if it was officially announced yet but I believe it will be about half the price of the Sony 70-200 f2.8
@@ScottDumas Hello Scott :D so nice to read about your exp. & Happy you had good one with Tamron. I checked the price its 1300.00 in UK. :/ :| :\ . Bit expensive for me id say. Will definitely buy Tamron 28-75mm for video work. as only have 24m and 85mm. If second hand hand lens will fall in my hand for around 800.00 GBP i can buy it. This is what i paid for my Tamron G2 70-200 EF. All the best :DD
One thing that people don't usually mention is that the filter size is 67mm! Yes, same across the entire lineup! No more owning different size filters!
great! review video, big Tamron fan since my Pentax K1000 film camera days ( late 70's early 80's ), this will be my next lens!, I was able to purchase a brand new Sony a7III camera and a brand new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for about the same price as the Sony G Master 70-200 f/2,8 lens or the Nikon D780 body. Thanks Tamron for making quality photography affordable for me
At minimum focus distance (1:2 macro) at 70mm, can you change the aperture normally to, say, F8-F11? Does the DOF increase or is it just a gimmick at F2.8? Thanks
You can still change aperture and it does increase sharpness and contrast a bit, but you never get rid of that gradation to softness on the edges. It would increase the depth of field in that in-focus "zone," but you'd have to stop down pretty significantly to really notice it.
I really do hope so.. and I'm sure they will because Canon and Nikon are definitely moving forward at full speed with those new mounts. Canon RF lenses are way too expensive so it will be nice to have more options (besides the manual focus ones that are already out). Thanks and stay safe yourself as well :)
Unfortunately I haven't been able to shoot with the 70-200 on Sony, so it's hard to say. I've had a lot of experience with them on Canon, but at that point color is more influenced by the camera so it's not a fair comparison.
Great review, I have many Sony lenses but I have recently bought The Tamron 17-28mm and the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 on both, they both at least equal the Sony lenses I have and also my Nikon Pro lenses, in some cases definitely sharper, Both lenses are light and well made. I look forward to purchasing the 70-180mm f2.8 now as well. (I shoot on the A9 and the A7iii and will say the two previously mentioned lenses may miss the odd shot in a burst over the Sony lenses, but not significant enough to list it as a negative). That was nice of Tamron to allow you to use this set up. Just one lens missing now Tamron, but I am sure this will ever happen.....an f4 400mm and a matching teleconverter. (We wish).
Really appreciate the input and glad to hear you've been enjoying the lenses. I'm guessing this one will keep you really happy as well. Let's just say, regardless of camera settings, I don't think I've ever hit 100% of a series of shots like I did in this test before haha. Part of that is definitely the camera, but very impressive nonetheless. And yeah, Tamron has been very kind to me, especially loaning me the camera as well for the test. I'll try and put some pressure on them for a solid telephoto prime lens or two haha.
@@ScottDumas Haha, yes please, if they can get one out in the next 6 months too. I have a 300mm f2.8 and converters and 800mm for the Nikon D500 and D810, so I am sort of covered (Plus a multi use 200-600mm Sony GM), but it's loads of camera bodies and lens combinations, so it just depends which set up suits the days shoot. I have shot Nikon since I was 20 and now 58, would never leave them entirely but Sony does seem to slip in the hand and be quicker these days! No way am I in the budget line for the Sony Primes, I may as well but another new car!! LOL ;-)
Antistio Labeo as an f4 zoom user myself, I totally get that. Internal zooming can definitely be important, and while this is well made, I can imagine the Sony being rock solid (same as Canon). I do also prefer physical controls but it didn’t take too long to get used to this. :) a fun option to have anyway :)
Oof, I have been meaning to get the 90mm macro as I do a lot of that, yet at the same time the minimum focus distance here and quality is amazing! Decisions decisions! 🤔
I had the 90mm macro and used it as a great alrounder. 1:1 macro is out of fashion now, need 5:1 for the insects. the 90mm however has best image stabiliser so consider that for your body decision, but realistically macro must be done on tripod with good lighting.
@@Andy1076 large spiders and impromptu hiking finds are great, along with landscape tele and portraits. the lens has razor sharp plane of focus! the great macro examples are focus stacked or in highly controlled environments (metabolism slowed). hard to reproduce for fast moving random insects with single exposure F16 (to keep head and legs in focus). walking with flash and pringle can is ungainly. see many good results with just raynox dcr250 clip on to standard zoom
Andy Yoon f2.8 at 210mm is much more challenging, physically speaking - size wise, than at 70mm... plus technically speaking the difference between 70-80mm would be just as, or more noticeable than the difference between 180-200mm, visually speaking. Also, you can always crop in a little bit, but you can’t always back up when you need something even just a little bit wider than what you have.
To be honest I'm not sure why those are only 24mp ...perhaps an effect of the Hi+ burst mode? For the boy running I used a single point AF directed right at his chest just to try and keep things as consistent as possible for reliable results. The pictures of the girl was in face detect AF mode.
@@ScottDumas I already have the 14-24 + 24-70 DG DN and they're absolutely amazing. Weight is also great but definitely heavier than Tamron. Just waiting to complete my holy trinity. :)
For full frame, however I'm pretty sure you can use it on crop sensor bodies as well. I'd recommend you double check that before making any decisions though, I'm not overly familiar with Sony bodies.
@@ScottDumas Thanks. I thought this was full frame. Great review though. I love my Sony cameras. I'm shooting on a Sony A6400 and need to find a good zoom lens for it.
I don't think so. I didn't get one with it and there's no place for one to go on... at this weight and size though I wouldn't imagine you really need one.
The maximum aperture possible remains f2.8 from 70mm all the way to 180mm ...some lenses will have a possible f2.8 on the wide end, but as you zoom in the maximum possible will become smaller, like f4 or f5.6. That's not the case here, it stays the same from 70mm through 180 :)
Why did tamron send you the 70-180mm? Nothing against you, but you mentioned over and over again, how you have no experience with sony. I can think of a handful of youtube/ photographers that would have actual experience and could give better input.
I've worked with them quite a lot to review other lenses in EF mount and since CP+ and other events were canceled, I think they were looking to other sources for announcing and testing new releases. Also, I'm in Japan and probably one of the few English speaking reviewers located somewhere convenient for them. Hope I could do it justice
@@weareyesyesyes Haha none taken :) It did surprise me as well. I had originally talked with them about a few EF lenses and they asked if they could throw this in as well. Even the body! It was a fun opportunity for sure though... made me like Sony a little more ;)
So I've contacted a few people about it and can't seem to find anyone who's tried it with the teleconverters unfortunately. I will keep looking and see if I can get my hands on them myself to test out as well. Sorry for the wait!

Thanks for watching! I did actually ask my contact within Tamron and he wasn't sure (I guess he's only on the marketing side of things?) I will definitely continue to try and find information though.
@@ScottDumas Thank You 🙂
Lens correction will be set to auto thats why there is no abberation and distortion
Even in the RAW photos? As far as I understood that's always only affected JPEGs?
@@ScottDumas jpegs only.. should check thats on or off to review the lens correctly else its like corrected in post.
Wow! Just hope Tamron can bring out a Canon R mount version also!
I'm definitely hoping for that myself! :)
Are you sure Hi+ is supposed to focus between shots? I don't think so..
katehuen it does focus up to f8. After that it’s locked in from the first shot.
Definitely a very convenient detail! I wasn't aware about the others myself but that's good to hear they're all the same :)
great! review video, big Tamron fan since my Pentax K1000 film camera days ( late 70's early 80's ), this will be my next lens!, I was able to purchase a brand new Sony a7III camera and a brand new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for about the same price as the Sony G Master 70-200 f/2,8 lens or the Nikon D780 body. Thanks Tamron for making quality photography affordable for me
Awesome to hear your experience! Glad you're loving their lenses as well, this will make a fantastic addition! :)
Very nice review and lovely kids!
Thanks so much! :)
Scott Dumas thanks a lot 👏
Thats a cool review. how about video ? are you able to handheld and shoot steady video at 180mm?
I'm planning to put out a second video to talk about that and a few other small things. Haven't had a chance to test it on the video side yet, sorry.
@@ScottDumas thanks, awaiting the same
Nice bro. I have the 28 - 75
Awesome, looks like they have a pretty nice "holy trinity" going now for the E mount :) Thanks for watching!
Scott do you think other companies will take a hard look on RF and Z mount? Keep safe back there man.
I really do hope so.. and I'm sure they will because Canon and Nikon are definitely moving forward at full speed with those new mounts. Canon RF lenses are way too expensive so it will be nice to have more options (besides the manual focus ones that are already out).
Thanks and stay safe yourself as well :)
hey scott, do you feel like the 70-200 is more rich in color than the 70-180?
LOL ;-)
I have the 2 other tamron lenses, really looking forward to adding to the collection!
How do you like the other 2? Seems like it will definitely be a great and much more affordable lineup
Sound Good
Do you think this lense a good replacement for a broken 24 105 g master f/4?
If you often felt like you wanted more reach on the 24-105 and didn't use the wide end much, sure :)
Good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
wow 70-180
Very good review especially for a non sony shooter.
Rare Amour Captures thanks so much!!
Nevertheless, using 70 200 that white black in hands is something more beautiful! :')
Still prefer the Sony 70-200 f4 G. Better built, better controls and internal zooming. That means a lot for me and I don't mind losing some light.
Curious to see if it consistently has the same sharpness traits of the 28-75mm (soft corners, tack sharp center).
I'd love to test that one as well to compare it, but from what I saw this was fairly impressive from corner to corner.
Christo Thank you for the reply 😃 Very true about the lighting and tripod, would you consider using this for insects? ☺️
I can understand Tamron wanted to make lens light but why not 80-210mm? I can give up wider angle but can't give up 200.
Why 24mp? I opened some of the raw files and saw that focus is mostly on the shirt instead of eyes in photos of kids.
To be honest I'm not sure why those are only 24mp ...perhaps an effect of the Hi+ burst mode? For the boy running I used a single point AF directed right at his chest just to try and keep things as consistent as possible for reliable results. The pictures of the girl was in face detect AF mode.
Ill wait for the Sigma 70-200mm DGDN :)
I'm sure that will be a solid lens as well ...with a solid weight to it too haha. I do like Sigma lenses though :)
@@ScottDumas I already have the 14-24 + 24-70 DG DN and they're absolutely amazing. Weight is also great but definitely heavier than Tamron. Just waiting to complete my holy trinity. :)
Is this for full frame cameras or will it work with APS-C?
For full frame, however I'm pretty sure you can use it on crop sensor bodies as well. I'd recommend you double check that before making any decisions though, I'm not overly familiar with Sony bodies.
@@ScottDumas Thanks. I thought this was full frame. Great review though. I love my Sony cameras. I'm shooting on a Sony A6400 and need to find a good zoom lens for it.
Nice vid
Thanks so much! :)
which camera do you use ?
This is tested with the A7III, sorry for not mentioning that.
What is the autofocus noise like for videos?
Almost non-existent :)
@@ScottDumas thanks. Just asking as i bought the sigma art 18-35 for my canon and it was soooo noisy. Even after the update.
I wonder if this will balance on a gimbal
Depends what gimbal! Although I'm sure it would do well on a good number of the newer gimbals on the market.
Great video man, liked and subbed
Eoghan Bell awesome, really appreciate it!!
Did they make a collar for the lens??
I don't think so. I didn't get one with it and there's no place for one to go on... at this weight and size though I wouldn't imagine you really need one.
RF version with VC and Control Ring please. :D
how do you compare its colors, contrast with 28-75 f2.8?
Unfortunately I haven't tried that one myself, so can't really compare in much detail. Sorry!
no problem brother, any way great review. Doing good, best of luck 🤞🏻
How much for Tamron 70-180mm?
It's listed for $1,199 on B&H
@@ScottDumas Oh better than G Master
This lens along with the 28-75mm f/2.8 and 17-28mm f/2.8 trinity is enough to choose the Sony E mount over Nikon Z or Canon RF systems.
I have that 28-75 f/2.8 lens with a A7ii and the pictures are fantastic! As well as video!
Love you sir 😘❣️ your video really liked 🇮🇳🙏
Thank you so much 😀
What does it mean Constant f2.8?
The maximum aperture possible remains f2.8 from 70mm all the way to 180mm ...some lenses will have a possible f2.8 on the wide end, but as you zoom in the maximum possible will become smaller, like f4 or f5.6. That's not the case here, it stays the same from 70mm through 180 :)
I swear Tamron is taking the piss with these focal lengths. 28-75, 70-180... What's next, 280?
That a Wotancraft bag?
It is! It's the Trooper, great bag.
"today i m bringing you my first ever sony lens review" --> brings up a tamron lens
A lens made for Sony, you get the idea ;)
Why did tamron send you the 70-180mm? Nothing against you, but you mentioned over and over again, how you have no experience with sony. I can think of a handful of youtube/ photographers that would have actual experience and could give better input.
I've worked with them quite a lot to review other lenses in EF mount and since CP+ and other events were canceled, I think they were looking to other sources for announcing and testing new releases. Also, I'm in Japan and probably one of the few English speaking reviewers located somewhere convenient for them. Hope I could do it justice
@@ScottDumas I meant no harm with my comment and I appreciate the honest response. That all does make sense. This has been a highly anticipated lens.
@@weareyesyesyes Haha none taken :) It did surprise me as well. I had originally talked with them about a few EF lenses and they asked if they could throw this in as well. Even the body! It was a fun opportunity for sure though... made me like Sony a little more ;)
Could I work it on my α6600 ???
I believe it should! :) It will be cropped though, so keep that in mind.
I hate seeing ‘the guts’ in the mount end of lenses. It means dust will eventually get into the lens.
Unfortunately yes- I see it pretty often but I always prefer to have a design that doesn't open up like that.
Is it sony 1.4x teleconverter compatible with Tamrono 70-180?
good question :)
So I've contacted a few people about it and can't seem to find anyone who's tried it with the teleconverters unfortunately. I will keep looking and see if I can get my hands on them myself to test out as well. Sorry for the wait!
Scott Dumas i think it might work great with sony tc 2x. Af might still be fast. Tnx
@@ScottDumas i heard that it is not compatible with sony's TCs.
@@zenza7120 Appreciate it! Somehow that's been hard to come by information haha
Does it works with teleconverter?
That's a good questions, I'll have to look into it and get back to you

Scott Dumas Aww don't worry about it, Thanks anw. Keep up your good work.
so...is this your first time shooting sony?
It is! Seriously, at least. Did it show? haha
@@ScottDumas lol nah i just thought it was funny how you mentioned so many times! no judgment thanks for the video. mostly interested on how this would preform for video usage. lack of oss on such a long lense could be a deal breaker.
Haha yeah, I know people can be harsh at times so figured I’d cover myself in case my lack of Sony experience showed through lol. I’m thinking about making a second video related to video use and another one or two small points I missed. Hopefully soon!
Nice review. But priced out of my budget. So sadddd.
A good f2.8 lens in this range is definitely hard to find on a small budget unfortunately. definitely worth it though if you can save up a bit :)
