If you could pick any lens, which one would you get??? Sony 70-200 F2.8...ultimate quality Tamron 70-180 F2.8...compact and light Sony 70-200 F4...smaller than the 2.8 and still built like a tank
For wedding work, Tamron, hands down. I haven't switched to mirrorless yet. But the existence of a light 70-180 f2.8 is making me lean towards Sony. Game changer.
I love both, but I’ve been biking lately with the Tamron and the fact that it is so light and small, it makes it very convenient to use it with peak design clip without having to put the camera in the bag.
Excellent comparison of the lenses. What I especially like about this review is that you talk in way that is easy to understand, and somewhat calming. Many of the people on UA-cam produce videos with too many jump cuts, and videography tricks that detract from the video. When I click on a topic like the one you covered, I want to be educated, and you made that happen. Thanks again!
Tamron will do well, the pros and cons highlighted by you don’t seem to justify the price difference although more robust usage environments may dictate the need for the stronger build.
Wait a minute. First test shot, Tamron was clearly darker, in the image stabilization test, Tamron shows +0.3 while Sony jumps between +0.7 and +1.0. Tamrons light transmission being half stop worse compared to sony might worth mentioning.
great comparison and really useful points covered. I'm looking to move out of the Sony apsc line up and into full frame and the Tamron 70-180 will be on my list of lenses to pick up.
A great review of all of these lenses ! Thank you so much and keep doing great videos and comparisons like that, you’re helping a lot of people in their choices. It really helps me 🇫🇷
Excellent video... I have been trying to decide if it would be worth it to sell my Sony 70-200mm f/4G OSS lens and replace it with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8. I still haven't decided if I will replace the f/4 G lens but, this video has nudged me a bit closer to making that move. I "think" that if Tamron had included the capability to add a 1.5x or 2x teleconverter capability to the Tamron, the switch would be a no brainer... Right now, the switch would cost me sevaral hundred dollars - depending on how much I could get for the f/4 G OSS lens. I presently, own the Sony 85mm f/1.8 lens and wonder if the Tamron, shot at 105 to 135mm and f/2.8, might be enough of a portrait lens to cover what I presently shoot outdoors with the Sony 85mm wide open. I suspect that it would since I have a 135mm f/2.8 Meyer Gorlitz which is great for portraits but, since it is manual focus - I prefer to use a lens on my Sony which will provide Eye-AF capability,,, I am not a professional anymore (retired many years ago) but I still like shooting portraits, Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic has pretty much curtailed my portrait work; so I won't make any decisions until the COVID-19 is no longer a threat to me and the models that I shoot!
When I was a nikon shooter my favorite lens I owned was 70-200 2.8. Just loved the images I would get with it. But it eventually became my least used lens overtime because it was like dragging a horses leg around with me it was so big and heavy, I would almost always leave it at home (unless i was shooting a wedding). I shoot Sony now and have the f4 but I'm sooooo looking forward to getting the Tamron.
I'm a GM 2.8 owner (no Tamron alternative at the time of my purchase) who shoots news and events. Of the substantial price difference between the two, I'd have to account many hundreds of dollars (at least) to the higher build quality and the stabilization. The price gap then becomes much less, especially spread out over years of ownership, too. Still a lot of difference, true, and if photographers don't need those extra features, then the easy choice is made.
What are your thoughts on Tamron? in the long run with the wear and tear? With the extend barrel on the Tamron? Tossing up between the f4 70-200 Sony or this. I will be using it to film Sports like MMA, Rugby League and Basketball. Thanks in advanced for your feedback!
As a Sony shooter and one who has owned the 70-200 GM since it was released, I can say that the Sony and other 1st party brand’s 70-200 2.8 are straight up overpriced! The Tamron keeps up and in most cases exceeds the Sony and costs less than half the price. If all the camera companies are hurting, they can start by pricing these lenses for less, obviously it can be done as shown by Tamron time and time again.
Defenitely the Tamron. The loss of 20 mm (10%) is not a big issue. I am more sceptical to the Tamron 28-75. If your lens is not wide enough there is nothing you can do about it.
Everyone has different needs thus different choices. Seems like we agree though. I loved the 28-75 but eventually switch to the Sigma 24-70 because that 4mm is huge and worth it even w/ the massive weight difference. Also loving the 70-180mm and makes the GM seem niche for build and 200mm.
Depends on what market you live in. I own the other two Tamron zoom lenses but have decided to pass on the 70-180. The UK price is too high. I already own the Sony 70-200 f4. My next lens is likely to be Sony 200-600 which is only about £200 more than this Tamron in UK and has OSS, lens switches and opens up more subjects like airshows and wildlife. Kind of disappointed by the pricing of Tamron this time and they've probably lost me as a customer.
Nice video. Hope they make this lens for the Canon RF soon. Still using DSLR, but switching to Sony is not in the card. Size and lightweight is the biggest thing for me ( I am an event photographer) , though looks like Tamron did not skimp on optics, AF, etc. This lens maybe the one that gives the final reason to switch to mirrorless.
Very nice review! That being said, I don't get when people call GM the ultimate, when it is not the best in AF... Think that you are taking photos of dancing people, toddlers, children...From what I see, the AF difference between the two matters. If you need a telephoto and you are taking photos of fast moving subjects, then 70-180 can be considered as the ULTIMATE...
I think the other thing you missed out as an advantage on Sony 2.8 is the ability to use the Teleconverters. This allows you to get double usage out of the lens for things like wildlife as you can get a 300mm F4 or 400mm F5.6. That may be a reason to buy the Sony....
Hey Dan! Great video - I saw you had the EVO 2 Pro 6K in some of your test shots. I have one on order from Drone-Works and was wondering if you were going to be doing a review or posting any of related videos? Would like to see your take on it! I do a lot of commercial work by Midway airport in Chicago so I use the EVO I over my P4P to avoid the geo-fencing nuisance and upgraded to the EVO 2 Pro for better images. I may still get the Mavic Air 2 for a smaller get-away drone depending on reviews. Thanks!
Busy bokeh of Tamron lens is a deal breaking fact for me, at 180mm f/2.8 the bokeh almost looks like a 200mm f/4 lens , nowhere near as smooth as typical 70-200 f/2.8 lens
Nah... I don’t see the problem. Difference is minor. Never gonna pay that much more for such a little difference. But I understand if it is important to you.
I got the Tamron and I am absolutely happy with it. It’s fast, accurate, lightweight and it’s sharper than the Sony. And btw: it doesn’t feels cheap in your hand. Well built. I use it on a Sony A7RIII. First I really wanted to go with the GM, but I waited for the Tamron to compare both at my local AD. And I am happy I was patient and waited 😄 I mainly shoot portraits.
Hi, I'm more interested in this lens on a tripod for sunset and sunrise landscape photography. Using it stopped down and probably between 135 and 180mm mostly and longer exposures. Can anyone with experience with this lens give views on if it is a good choice? Thanks
Sony 70-200 f4 would work well in most scenarios with external lights. At 120mm or more you won’t feel much of a difference for background blur between f 2.8 and f4. IBIS is a great deal on the sony lenses, I have been shooting outdoor portraits with the sony f4 and it has been the best for me. I got a used one from B&H, saved some bucks. I wouldn’t prefer tamron lenses, Sigma is more trustworthy I believe.
Great review thanks!!! ...For I'm tossing up between the two lenses but also thinking about the extra reach down the track for sport with either 1.4x or 2x teleconverter....I don't think the Tamron accepts the teleconverter whilst maintaining full functionality ....is this right???
Best review! I was following the Sony sel70200 F4 weeks and lost it to another buyer i ended buying the tamron a bit cheaper and was worried if that was a mistake after your review and comments on UA-cam i think it was the right choice! Skater photos from the tamron just blow my mind 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Dan Whats that super long pole you're using for the 360 cam sticking out of your sun roof please? Also what 3650 cam you using these days Best, Rick
I have the F4 version from Sony. I mainly use that lens out doors and I find many times I am at the 200 mm range. Otherwise I would have sold it and bought the Tamron lens.
I can’t help but wonder if he had taken off his sunglasses and you had used the Sony Eye AF - It would’ve locked on alot sooner. Interesting comparisons though being that sony kills the wallet with her lens prices. Cheers
Shooting trough the evf or back screen makes no difference for the camera performance, but do you point that out because it could be a human variant insted of the camera capabilities?
Honestly, I'm interested in the new Canon RF. The fact that it is an external vs internal zoom helps a lot wit backpack space. If it's a great lens and the R5 is a hit, I'll be moving from Sony to Canon.
What ND filters were used in this video? Really liked the look when the guy was on the skateboard! Looked really well balanced with the sunlight and and highlights.
Did the BMW come as the extra bonus for the shoot? If so, who footed the bill, cause that would determine for me which is the better Zoooom lens, yes let us also sign up for such a shoot. 😎😎
Nice video and comparison! One of the other options on the Sony 2.8 that may appeal to folks is the fact it will accept the Sony teleconverters for some additional reach as well. I know the Sony f4 will not accept a TC and recall the Tamron doesn’t either (however I could be wrong on the latter).
I got the sony f4 and was thinking of the tamron and I shoot mostly cyclists and motorcyclists. Would the tamron be a better choice if I'm going for the bokeh?
I am selling mine. Close up performance is the worst of any telephoto I have used and it could be sharper wide open. The Tamron is much more versataille being better for everything from sports to portraits, cloae ups and low light events.
I don't think I would be in any rush to upgrade but unless you really need the metal build, the Tamron is sharper, has a wider aperture, smaller, lighter, and has macro which is a better fit for me
May I ask a question- I just upgraded from a Canon 6D Mk I to Sony A7iii. What focus settings did you use for taking skateboarding videos? The 6D had basic video 1080P with literally zero focus and now I’m trying to figure out how to get myself into at least this decade of technology. Thank you-
Hey! So wide with AF-C is extremely powerful and I highly recommend it. Adding eye AF makes it even better. The only reason to switch to a zone or single point is if wide is picking up other people instead of the subject you want. Unlike the 6D, the A7III AF system is intelligent so wide is better than it would be on a dslr
@@learningcameras Thanks for the clairification, kind of what I thought. Just imagine if Sony had sent you A1 cameras, what u could have done with those lenses & a brand new BMW zipping up & down the beach sands! Could have been, "Sand in your Lens! the Ultimate Beach Movie!" 😎😎
Personally I way prefer having the faster aperture. Usually I shoot moving subjects and need to keep my shutter speed fast anyway negating most of the need of image stabilization. The issue for you is that without IBIS in the body, it might be harder to hand hold your frame and things can be a little shaky when looking in the viewfinder. So if you have stable hands, go for the Tamron but if you are shaky like me, maybe think about the Sony
I own an A7RIV and have a Sigma 100-400mm, but am wanting longer for wildlife and bird photography, so thinking about the Sony 200-600mm, which if I get that, sort of makes the Sigma 100-400 a bit redundant. So was thinking of selling that and replacing with the Tamron 70-180, so it follows on nicely from my Sony 24-105 which is a really useful focal range. The other question I have is, I also have the Big Beast 135 f1.8 GM lens which is awesome. But with the Tamron, (also have a Sony 90mm f2.8 macro which is awesome for portraiture as well), would this make the 135mm an expensive and possibly redundant bit of kit? I'd love your thoughts on this.
So I would definitely get the 70-180 with what you said as it offers something different than the 100-400 and 200-600 especially. But that 135 F1.8 is an absolutely awesome lens so I would be hesitant to get rid of it lol. The biggest benefit to the 135 is that the AF is insanely fast for a lens with that much heavy glass
@@learningcameras Thanks very much for your advice Dan. I've ordered the Tamron, and am looking to replace the 100-400 Sigma with the 200-600mm Sony, however I hear there are some possible conflicts between this lens and the A7RIV which is concerning me slightly. I will also hang on to the 135 at least initially and then make a decision on that later as I continue to use it. Cheers, Sean
Hello, what model was GM tested on? At 5.56 minutes you will see that you do not have identical carcasses. and the image quality of R3 and R4 is very different even with the same lens. I am silent about the earlier models you wear GM on. Because such a comparison doesn't make sense at all
All the side by side tests are both using the A7RIII. The guy that helped me at the shoot brought his R3 so we had two identical cameras. But I only own 1 personally which is why the broll shot at 5:56 shows different cameras
Hey! So the Tamron has a slight quality advantage but the main win is an extra stop of light / shallower depth of field. However a negative is the loss of image stabilization so don't do it if you have a camera that lacks IBIS. That said, the Sony 70-200F4 is still awesome so I wouldn't be in any rush to make the change especially because it will cost you some $$$
Hi I just got a new Tamron 70-180 when I take it out of the box, I felt something shaking inside it also Made in Vietnam, I’ve 28-75 lens without any problem it is Made in Japan! Any idea if this a problem and what is this weird sound? Does anyone have a Tamron lens made in Japan? Thanks
Unless you want something small/light, I'd consider the Sony at that price. If nothing else you could probably sell it after a year or two for the same price you paid
Tamron knocked it out of the park with their "trinity" for sony. Only reason I stuck with sony because you're out of your mind if I'm paying for sonys price gouging GM lenses.
I’ve recently got my first mirrorless! Got an A7iii, with a Tamron 17-28 & a 28-75. I’ve been absolutely loving it, but I definitely do need a longer telephoto also. I was looking into a second hand Sony 70-200, but I think this Tamron may be the best option. Can you confirm the filter thread size of the Tamron? Both my other 2 lenses are 67mm, which is so helpful as I bought a Nisi circular long exposure kit. If the 70-180 is also 67mm that will be so good, and deffo be the deciding factor. Love you content and was a really helpful video as this is literally the choice I am pondering at the moment. Cheers man!
If you could pick any lens, which one would you get???
Sony 70-200 F2.8...ultimate quality
Tamron 70-180 F2.8...compact and light
Sony 70-200 F4...smaller than the 2.8 and still built like a tank
Tough call Dan. Probably take the Sony 2.8 but if I was traveling (which I do a lot) I’d grab the Tamron 📸
My trusty GM all the way😉
Keeping the GM, although we usually prefer our 85 and 135 primes in that range and zoom with our feet. The OSS is great though.
Tamron

Thanks for including the 70-200 f4. Most vids I've seen have only been comparing the 2.8s only.
The f4 sucks

I love my F4, i never brought it for close ups, its great landscape and portrait lens. But i will wait and see what Sigma will do.
Dang, I was just about ready to pull the trigger on that 70-200 f4 lens! Gonna have to give the Tamron a closer look now
Yeah, getting the F2.8 is a huge win especially if having a lighter weight compact lens is a bonus
f/4 for 200mm, internal zoom, native AF.
The Sony lens seemed to bring the white of the car out a lot brighter
Yep, although I only noticed it outside in good light so most likely the difference is how the light is reflecting on the inside of the lenses
I agree. It was a more pleasant image. Still going for the Tamron though.
The Tamron got a slightly warmer tone (like Sigma) but this is really no problem to fix in LR or PS if necessary.
Looks like there is a filter on the tameron kinda yeah?
Wait a minute. First test shot, Tamron was clearly darker, in the image stabilization test, Tamron shows +0.3 while Sony jumps between +0.7 and +1.0. Tamrons light transmission being half stop worse compared to sony might worth mentioning.
But they're shilling for Tamron. Look at the purchase link in the 'more info'. It's only for the Tammy. So, you're right, and that's why.

I got the sony f4 and was thinking of the tamron and I shoot mostly cyclists and motorcyclists. Would the tamron be a better choice if I'm going for the bokeh?
Yep, the Tamron would be better if you want more bokeh since it can shoot at F2.8 and it was actually sharper than the Sony F4 in my tests
I love my F4, specially the colors compared to the Tamron, second hand its half the price of the Tamron.
I am selling mine. Close up performance is the worst of any telephoto I have used and it could be sharper wide open. The Tamron is much more versataille being better for everything from sports to portraits, cloae ups and low light events.
Sony F4 has no close up abilities nor is it as sharp as the Tamron 2.8 (not close) so sell your F4
The F4 is not even close to the Tamron. Not very sharp, slower with so so bokeh. And the sad MFD makes it a no go
I noticed the Tamron has less micro-contrast on both the car shoot, and the video shoot. Anyone else?
i have Sony F4, should i upgrade to Tamron?
I don't think I would be in any rush to upgrade but unless you really need the metal build, the Tamron is sharper, has a wider aperture, smaller, lighter, and has macro which is a better fit for me
Idk why, but the random background pic made me laugh... although he WAS pretty sharp.
😂😂
May I ask a question- I just upgraded from a Canon 6D Mk I to Sony A7iii. What focus settings did you use for taking skateboarding videos? The 6D had basic video 1080P with literally zero focus and now I’m trying to figure out how to get myself into at least this decade of technology. Thank you-
Hey! So wide with AF-C is extremely powerful and I highly recommend it. Adding eye AF makes it even better. The only reason to switch to a zone or single point is if wide is picking up other people instead of the subject you want. Unlike the 6D, the A7III AF system is intelligent so wide is better than it would be on a dslr
excellent work!
can we get RAW pics from each to download and play with them plz?
thank you
What camera did you use to record this video?
The Sony A7III for everything except me talking in the studio which was the Nikon Z6
@@learningcameras Thank you Dan! Great work!
Absolutely! Thanks so much
So were all of these test shots & video footage done with Sony a7iii bodies? Or other Sony bodies? If so, which ones? 😎😎
Both were A7III bodies which was my primary camera at the time
@@learningcameras Thanks for the clairification, kind of what I thought. Just imagine if Sony had sent you A1 cameras, what u could have done with those lenses & a brand new BMW zipping up & down the beach sands! Could have been, "Sand in your Lens! the Ultimate Beach Movie!" 😎😎
I am considering the tamron lens. Mainly because it is the most affordable
I have the original A7r. Should I get the Sony F4 for tge image stabilization or Tamron f2.8 for the faster aputure?
Personally I way prefer having the faster aperture. Usually I shoot moving subjects and need to keep my shutter speed fast anyway negating most of the need of image stabilization. The issue for you is that without IBIS in the body, it might be harder to hand hold your frame and things can be a little shaky when looking in the viewfinder. So if you have stable hands, go for the Tamron but if you are shaky like me, maybe think about the Sony
Great Video bro, appreciate the effort put in the video! :0 Greetings from Serbia! :)
Thanks so much!!! Means a lot
I am completely sold on the Tamron, I already use the 28-75 which is really nice. However, in Europe the Tamron costs 1500€!!
Well done, thank you !
Why can't I find a video that utilizes zooming?
Dan I have the Sony 70-200 f4 is worth me buy tamron I do have 17-24 and 28-75 both are 2.8
Depressed what you expect? And why would you like to have it?
Thanks
That does seem normal. Mine does that as well.
I hope I can have this lens
A good comparison 📸
Many thanks!
I really like Tamron !
Does the Tamron not have and AF/MF switch on the lens??
Nope
Couldn't see anything, any picture from the f4...!?
Can’t wait to collab one day fella
Found a used GM for $1900 , at that price point, is it worth it to pick the Sony over the Tamron?
Unless you want something small/light, I'd consider the Sony at that price. If nothing else you could probably sell it after a year or two for the same price you paid
Dan Watson that’s so true! Thanks for the content you make bro! Take care and stay safe everyone! 🙏🏻📸
I wonder how this lens works in low light situations (night street photography)
Not bad at all but typically I shoot wider lenses in those situations like a 24-70, maybe Tamron's 28-75mm, or ideally a 35mm or 50mm prime lens
Tamron knocked it out of the park with their "trinity" for sony. Only reason I stuck with sony because you're out of your mind if I'm paying for sonys price gouging GM lenses.
They're very similar except the sony is built a lot tougher and can zoom a little farther.
Is the Sony 70-200 f2 about due for an update?
Probably, but I don't think Sony has updated an E mount GM lens yet.
2:43 Sony miss!
Awesome 👏 good job 👍 of course Sony 70-200 mm gm is better sharp 😁tamron only sp lens image quality is excellent.
Dont forget to mention the terrible back focus problem with the 2.8 gm :(
I’ve recently got my first mirrorless!
Cheers man!
Is this Daytona Beach?
Right next door at new Smyrna
Go Tamron and use the money you save to buy more glass. Sony lenses are over priced and too damn expensive.
Im insulted in the name of the 70-200 f4 :) quite a sick lens :)
Something you forgot to bring up is that the sony's are both 20mm longer.
Thank you for the nice review! Have been waiting for it for a long time. “However...” Have you ever noticed how often you say “However”? 😂
Is sigma going to come out with a competitor?
