      Gotta have the Trilene/double clinch knot...super easy and dependable and double loop on the eye/snap/ring/arm of the lure, and provides more front tightened coils that protects the knot against abrasion, akin to the SDJK.

    I had to stop using the double-uni knot because it kept breaking, I believe because of line burn when cinching it down (even when slobbered on)... any advice on how to avoid this? (FWIW, I went through a lot of braid-to-leader knots before I finally started using the Alberto knot w/10 turns - the leader doesn't get cinched so there's little chance of burning)
    Thanks for another great, informative video, Tim!

    • @colbyscott9822
      @colbyscott9822 4 роки тому

      This happened to me, too. I started using the FG knot. It took a while to learn well but once you do, it's not as difficult as you might think. It does take a couple extra minutes but I think it's worth it. One thing to note is that on smaller diameter leaders (less than 12 lbs) it might slip on you. Easy way to prevent this is by tying an over hand knot on the tag end of the leader and cinch that overhand knot all the way to the wraps. Then add a couple more overhand knots with the tag end of the brain around both the braid and tag end of the leader.
      .
      I know it sounds complicated but like I said, once you learn it it's no big deal. As far as tying it on the boat, as long as it's not terribly windy it's pretty easy.

    • @mikemcd8408
      @mikemcd8408 4 роки тому

      @@colbyscott9822 I tried the FG for a while, but I'm typically tying 40# braid to 10 or 12 lb fluoro or mono (sometimes smaller), and the FG is really intended for the leader to be heavier than the braid. Even when I used a ridiculous number of turns, it would slip on me (though I never tried a stopper knot on it). The Alberto with the 'standard' 7 turns slips, as well, but I've yet to have the knot fail with 10 turns, even going 40# braid to 6# fluoro.
      I actually think the FG is easier to tie than the Alberto, especially in the wind.

    Thanks Tim! I use dbl uni for braid to flouro as well. Usually works great, but had a couple leader knot breaks yesterday. Here's what I did: 40 lb braid to 15 lb fluoro. Double uni knot with SIX loops on each side. Throwing jigs on an SLX MH in 15' of water. Had to set hooks pretty hard to convert. As I said, had 2 breaks at leader knot. Should I: Increase the number of loops to 8 or 9, or go to a blood knot? Thanks.

  • @lovexhate82
    @lovexhate82 4 роки тому

    Would give this 2 thumbs up if I could. Been using palomar for over a year now since I had a common cinch knot that I had used as a kid fail on me last year. Never had a problem with the palomar EXCEPT the fact that on bigger baits you use a lot of line to make it big enough to feed the bait through and I have never had it slip on straight braid but will definitely start using the double for my frog setup. Now I have some knots I can practice for those. For the leader knot I started with trying the FG knot but 8/10 times i tied it it would not hold it would slip and if you can't trust the knot you are tying whether it is because you can't tie it properly or it just isn't working for you you can't use it. You have to be able to trust it is going to hold. Since then I have started using the Aussie Quickie for my 20Ib braid to 10Ib fluoro finesse setup but it usually takes me 2-3 attempts to get it right and I gave up on using heavy braid with leader and started just running straight 17-20Ib fluoro. Now I can practice the double blood and double uni and hopefully come to trust those leader knots. Thanks for all the knowledge you and Matt share!

    • @blahblahmilbury
      @blahblahmilbury 4 роки тому

      the FG knot is easy to mess up. If you make one single mistake, the knot wont hold. If you do it right, its the best and slimmest knot hands down.

      @lovexhate82 4 роки тому

      @@blahblahmilbury I will agree with that. The few times I got it right it was great. Passed through eyes easily, no hang ups, held beautifully ... but it gets frustrating having to tie it 10 times before I get the perfect cinch.

Do these make baits act differently or less natural? Really interested in your thoughts. Thanks for the great videos they are more informative than many I’ve watched.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 роки тому

      We don't use snaps at all anymore. Over the years we've had top many failures. Different brands, styles, materials, they all fail eventually. You're much, much better off with a hyperwire split ring or in the case of striper and other large predators, an ultra split ring.
      Yes, some convenience is lost, but so much strength and reliability is gained.

      @@tacticalbassin Hey Tim. Hoping you can help me out. I switched over to a baitcaster this year, Dobyn's fury paired with Shimano SLX thanks to your recommendation videos. I've loved the transition, but have recently had some issues. I use the double blood knot you showed for my leader connection knot. I had been using powerpro 40lb with spiderwire 17lb mono leader. Had one failure which I realized was due to improper knot tying, I finished with both tag ends coming through the same direction and it ultimately untied. in the last week I have had my braid break off 3 times. The first time I got snagged in rocks in moving water while shore fishing. I was unable to get it out and had to break off the line. The braid snapped, not the mono... when I got home I cut back a bit of the braid in case there was a weak spot and retied a new leader, this time 14lb trilene mono. Nicely dressed blood knot, 9 wraps in each direction and always make sure to wet it before cinching down. The next day the second break off happened. I had pulled in a few before this happened, including 3lb smallie (not huge but was a decent little fighter) and the line had no issues. I checked my blood knot and all looked good. a short while later I got a backlash and watched my leader and rat L trap sail away. I was in my kayak this time and was able to retrieve it. the blood knot was fully intact and the braid had snapped just before the blood knot. By then I was convinced it was an issue with the braid. I went home and respooled with new powerpro super 8 slick 40 lb and tied a trilene 14lb mono leader. The next day out fishing all was going well(aside from the fish not biting likely due to the 30 degree night we had) a half hour in I cast, backlash (cast too hard on this one) and watched my leader and bait sail away. Shore fishing this time so the leader and bait were gone. I got out the backlash, real back in the line and the braid is broken off. No twirly end, just a nice clean break off in the new braid. I've gone over my guides to be sure they smooth and free of damage, all looks good, as it should on a 3 month old rod that's been well taken care of. I'm at a loss as to what is causing the issue. Both of my boys are using the same line set ups, I have tied on their leaders and they haven't had a single failure. I've lost all confidence now and don't want to keep pitching away baits, or lose nice fish. Any ideas? I want to be able to enjoy fishing again... please help!

    I wonder if you guys have ever considered using the modified Albright (Alberto) knot as a connection knot. It's very strong and thin, and you don't need weird acrobatics to get it tied like, say, the FG knot. I think it's fairly easy to tie. I have tried to transition to the FG but I just can't get the knot to tie correctly with consistency, even with some of the simplified methods some UA-camrs have shown. But I've been happy with the modified Albright.

It’s super strong, super small and thing, and never catches a lot like all other knots. I love that knot, it takes a bit of time to learn, but I learned it in like a 20 minute session. It’s strong dude, I use it for bass fishing, and when I have break offs, it never breaks at the braid to flouro knot, it breaks at the knot on the lure, that’s how strong the fg knot is. Tight lines man !

    I know theres a video somewhere that you guys made. But real quick can you answer a question.. when do you run split rings on a crank bait (all types) and when do you not? And if not then would you run a rapala knot or tie your typical knot to the bait?

    Thanks Tim. I use the double Uni for all of my braid to leader connections. Is it OK for 20lb braid to 15lb mono? That’s what I do for top water lures.
    For tying a Uni knot to a hook or lure, can you go through the eye of the hook twice (like you would for a Trilene knot) and then tie your Uni? Seems like that would be even stronger, but I’m concerned it may put stress on the line that I’m missing. What do you think?

      If your fishing top water you should definitely use a stronger braid. I’d say no less than 50lb braid but the knot itself is great for that. I’ve never had a problem at least, not the best but good enough in my experience

    Sometimes I just use Elmer's glue. Gotta be clear though, don't want the fish seeing it. Great video though, definitely needed easy to tie knots.

    I use the blood knot for leader connection. Some times I’m tieing a floro leader on and it burns even when I wet it. I’m tieing 12lb up to 20lb floro. What connection knot would ya recommend?

      I tie an fg on my leaders. Supposedly the strongest ever and thinnest. Not super easy to tie but there’s vids where U can get it down. Now it’s easy but took a bit.

      Yes I’ve played with the FG some. I just wanted something that was little faster easier to tie that was effective

      Shawn Titsworth it’s definitely effective and can be done fairly quick once u get it down. It’s not rocket science just a little tedious. Get it down and u will be happy with it. I bet I could do it in a minute or less if I had to.

      @@shawntitsworth4878 Agree with Jimmy..hard to tie at first but after some experience it's not more complicated than other leader/connection knots

    I used the double uni for years then I switched to the Alberto knot because its smaller and goes through the guides easier.
