    This movie is a master class in how to direct children. Most directors treat kids with kid-gloves which results in muted performances, but not Richard Donner. He didn't abuse or cursed out the kid, but Donner would often yell out directions or use reverse-phychology to get an emotional reaction.
    Fun Fact: Richard Donner and Harvey Bernhard asked Alan Ladd Jr., then the head of Twentieth Century Fox, for extra money during the film's post-production period to hire composer Jerry Goldsmith. They strongly felt that his music was right for the movie, after seeing him perform a live concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles earlier that year. Ladd was finally talked into giving Donner and Bernhard around $25,000 to hire Goldsmith, who would deliver his first and only Academy Award win for his score in 1977. Donner credits the success of the film to Goldsmith's score, which increased the tension and fear of the movie.

    Ironically, Harvey Stephens (Damien Thorn) was never told he was involved in making a horror movie. The climactic smile at the camera was 'achieved' by the director being off camera and 'warning' Harvey not to laugh.
    My favorite portion of the film involves the photographer and the discovery and discussion of each mysterious 'mark' in the photographs.

    You mentioned that the movie takes place with well to do and influential people (U.S Ambassador) People in these positions usually move up in politics, thus gaining more influence. Where else would Satan desire his child to be? Not much influence in the slums. That is why so many religious people get nervous when there is talk of a Global standard or a Global court or a huge concentration of power (Like the E.U that not only is an economic conglomeration but because of free movement without immigration needs, standardized laws that member countries MUST adopt stripping them of a lot of autonomy.). The Antichrist is supposed to gain global influence or leadership.

    As an older gentleman, I can say that this was quite the scare to movie goers in the seventies. As with the Exorcist, this film quite unnerved the viewers. In the seventies, there was a big resurgence of apocalyptic feelings and the rise of cults. This fed into that and may have exasperated those fears. Also, there are some fascinating stories about "The Curse" on the film. There were a number of accidents during the production and there were even some deaths. Creepy stuff. Some people believe this film and Poltergeist may have been cursed films.
    Great reaction. You are doing a great job. Keep up the work.

  • @Filimaua13
    @Filimaua13 3 роки тому +11

    All these religious horror films were the trend back in the 60's-70's with the hippy movements, actual real secret satanist cults and the conspiracies back then. These kinds of films (Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Omen) scared the shit out of people and actually got them flocking back to church and reading the bible lol. Fear really is an interesting tool isn't it?
    But yeeah what made these films great was how real they were. They actually took their time getting you into the characters. Watching their everyday lives, reminding you that these are actual people. I mean when was the last time you actually cared about the cute romantic relationship between a horror movie couple? Heck they even got you feeling kinda bad for Damien and he's the devil lol. They really made you believe this boy was their son they've loved and raised for 5 years which makes Robert trying to kill him all the more dark and tragic.
    The Omen is probably one of the few in the bunch where the supernatural aspect is vague or subtle enough for everything in the film to possibly just be pure coincidence. Leaving you with a story about the descent of a man losing everything, going crazy and through his grief blames and kills his young adopted son. The other two films (RBaby and TExorcist) are more heavy with its supernatural, but they still remain grounded with its world and character building.
    Compare that to most (not all) hollywood supernatural horror films nowadays where stories follow the same formulas over and over, the horror has been simplified to just cheap jumpscares so they don't leave lasting impacts anymore, and the characters are nothing more than usual cliche archetypes and plot devices to the point they don't even feel like real people anymore so you don't care as much and are only interested in seeing their deaths. Sad sight really.

    Nothing new I can add to this that others haven't commented on as well... Also, 2006 remake, released 2006, June 6th (666, of course), is basically the same script, repurposed, with only a few changes made to original movie, like the decapition scene, which is now made according to the script, while in the original, they had changed the scene a little from how it was originally written. Damien was borne of a jackal, which is a feral dog, hence the animal skeleton in the grave with the Thorns' actual child. Not sure why they cut off the priest so abruptly when he revealed this, as this has been a confusing element in the film for years, and the editor should have caught that when he/she was cutting the film, unless it was on purpose to have the big reveal in the cemetery. As for the wealth thing, the prophecy called for him to be born into a powerful family so that he can rise to be some sort of world leader, which would require a wealthy family to boost the odds of him making it big in politics.

After the decapitation, I ran out into the lobby. By today’s standards it’s not that scary but it sure as hell was back then, especially as a kid.

    I saw this movie when it debuted in theaters. I was taken in by the suspenseful moments. Some of the biblical references were interesting. The baboons attacked the car, because the movie's animal handlers tranquilized a baboon and placed the animal on the hood of the car. The other apes felt threatened (and then pissed) and then they began jumping all over the car. Lee Remick's reaction was genuine. She was terrified. I'd be as well!
