Great video! I referenced your older videos, among others, when first learning about sub setup then use of dual subs and REW. Effective use of REW and Dual subs has been a game-changer.
Thanks for this quick tutorial. If you could I’d love to see a review of the bowers and Wilkins 607’s
Should us how to add subwoofer to a powered speakers that don’t have a subwoofer out? 😎👍🏻
@@HPMIKE55 You would add it via a splitter Y cable from the source that has RCA outs connecting to the powered speakers.
Andrew, I have a suggestion for a video. I had a new open concept house built and the center speaker had to be boosted 4db, as I could not hear the voices and listening to music beat my eardrums to death.
Come to find out these more modern houses with wood floors and open concept suffer from echo effects that can make even great speakers sound hash and horrid.
I have been working through simple solutions with my Facebook audio groups and my wife and myself made some drastic improvements today without compromising our esthetics!
A video covering open concepts, noise damping etc, would be helpful to many.
You have a way of making your videos deliver complex problems and complex solutions seem easy. I sure if you had one covering this that I would not have taken so long explaining why and what we needed to do to my better half.
Thanks for what you bring to the community!

So,i placed my subwoofer on the couch in the listening position and it demanded that i fetch it a beer while it watched the football. 😂
They do that sometimes.
please do a how to explain to your wife why the subwoofer is on the couch and you're kneeling in the corner.
This is hands down the most comprehensive subwoofer set up instructions on youtube. Anyone getting into hifi or ht should follow this guide. Amazing!!
I’ve watched a lot of subwoofer set up videos and this is without doubt the easiest to follow by a country mile period ,well done ✅
Good advice. I have an old REL Q400e that still packs a punch. My neighbours love it too. They even bricked my window so they could hear it aswell as the vibrations.. Evidence they have a good taste in subwoofers.
Brilliant, informing and educational video. Excellent clarity delivered in an encouraging tone.
This video couldn’t have come at a better time because I just bought my first home theater sub. Been running the Jamo HCs 803 5.0. Added the atmos and finally bought the sub. This is my first try at home theater and so far I’ve learned a ton from your channel and others who are knowledgeable in the industry. It’s not the best or most expensive by any means but it’s got me interested in the hobby and for that I thank you!
I followed these steps to get more out of my 5.1 system, and boy did it work. I especially enjoyed phase tining my sub, moving the sound back and forth. Ah, knowledge feels good, thanks for making me smarter Andrew 😍
The only video so far that made it easy to understand and how to setup crossover properly.
Thank you so much, bmw325ia! We appreciate you watching.
OMG, it's like I've just seen the Matrix !!! Thank you so much for producing such a clean, straight forward video to follow. One of the best youtube channels. Peace from Sydney Australia
This was very helpful! I watched few different videos and all of them were so "techy". A few were just lectures with zero hands on demos. I love how you gave some clear action plans us novices could try. Thanks so much.
Awesome 👌 Can't believe the difference in sound quality after a few adjustments and repositioning the sub.
Awesome video bro very clear and to the point. Best sub and speaker video out there by far...
Older video, but it was awesome! I have my system coming in a couple of days, and I am excited to start setting up! Love the channel!
I purchased a pair of Kanto TUK with the S8......this video helps big time! The “crawl”
is key
Thanks. I just got my first subwoofer ever (budget but mighty Jamo 210) and l really needed this. THANKS
Phenomenal video. This was so well done and helpful I subscribed.
Gonna be using this vid this weekend, just got a Rythmik G22
wicked informative! thank you. And keep the out takes in - they're fabulous.
I'm so glad I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your passion! Being an audio enthusiast for quite a while, I've picked up many cool tips from you. Thank you
This is very educational. Thank you :)
Glad it was helpful!
Just got a 15" Monolith subwoofer. It doesn't just shake the room, it shakes the building.
I bought the same sub and got it delivered yesterday. Unfortunately, the amp is bad and the LED light kept flashing green and red. Didn't hear any output. Nothing. Pretty disappointing but I'm glad your enjoy yours!
I believe that, i have dual, and shakes the foundation.
Actually my sub turned out to be fine! I just had to turn up the volume on the avr for the sub to turn on.
The Utah monolith was just a big Subwoofer
HAHAHA best comment so far!!
This was the best explanation for phase that I've heard. I was always a little vague on what it meant. Thanks!
Andrew - I’ve watched some of your videos for 1-2 months now, and I have to say, I enjoy your video format and dialog. Kudos to you and Kristi for the excellent work you two put in. You’ve earned my subscription to this channel and follow on Instagram.
Thank you for sharing your insight in such a palatable manner.
Thanks so much!
This was really useful!
Great video!
I get my system to operate at full range. I just changed subwoofer position and some settings from amplifier.
My wife’s reaction to new sound: “Did you buy something new again?!!!!”
“No… I just changed some things.”
We all know that we are placing the subwoofer in a place where the GF agrees with.
Your show is great
Bold of you to assume that we all have girlfriends 😔
God My girlfriend won’t even allow move sofa few inch away from the wall.
So much truth in a so short sentence.
Just happened to me... Yep I don't care. It's fine for me
Thank you, I follow your UA-cam. I just got a Klipsch 10" subwoofer with my KEF tower Q950 speakers I just bought an Onkyo TX 8220, from your video, it's wonderful! Been following you for some time now, thank you so much, God Bless
This Video makes my preparation easier. Thanks Man!
Husky people, are the best people!
I think a small tweaks for improved sound would be useful for a lot of people. Stuff like proper speaker placement, removing as many reflections as possible like moving center to front edge of cabinet, thick rug if you have hardwood floors, proper toe in and how to check it with pink noise, filling speaker stands with sand are the few ideas that come to mind. I just bought a Umik-1 and a 35ft subwoofer cable to help with setting up my duals better. Also you shouldn't set the distance of the sub exactly to the physical distance as there is going to be some signal delay especially if you have a wireless module.
Andrew, thank you for doing this video, it was a bit eye opening or ear in this case. I've watched other videos about sub placement etc but yours was more helpful. I thought that my YU6 and Sub8 was sounding really good until I placed my head directly between the YU and Sub, it sounded off/out of phase so I switched it to 180 on the sub and voila, much better. I had to readjust the crossover and volume a pinch because the phase is now correct. Now it is sounding really good ! Thank you.
Simplest guide for setting a sub. Thank You.
Glad it helped!
A cheap laser distance measure is awesome in getting accurate speaker distances. Sit in the PLP and point it from your forehead directly to the speaker cone.
Yes! Highly recommend this as well. I use this one amzn.to/3HBwnl6.
Question about orientation after you find the best location... with a rear-ported sub, should the main driver face outwards from the wall (port facing the wall) or parallel to the wall (driver and port aligned parallel to the wall)? Does it make any huge difference?
Really enjoyed this one. Set up multiple systems and this was very straightforward and clear
Andrew you’re a true savior! This video is everything I’ve been trying to find that’s simple to understand and do yourself, rather then waste a lot of money on a company to do it. And the best part, I own this specific AVR as well! Thank you so much! I was just about to get a subwoofer, but didn’t know anything about crossover and all that weird stuff. Now I understand and can set it up without issues. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Can you touch on the sub inputs? LFE, hi pass, etc
What about setting for bass like -> Subwoofer mode = LFE or LFE+Main and LPF for LFE??
Your videos are so easy to understand Andrew.
Real great, now I understand why I have for so long I have been unhappy with my sub. Will try steps you have shown
Can you please make a tutorial on how we can start with designing and making an acoustic home theatre at home
Hi Andrew, great video. Simple and effective. I did not understand one aspect though. What is the reference point of decibel level that we shoud use when caliberating the speakers and sub-woofer using decible meter
I use 75dB. Some folks prefer a higher volume. I don't listen in excess of 100dB THAT often, so I find 75dB works well for me.
You now are my go to guy when it comes to online tutorial regarding home improvement
Great Video Andrew. Very well paced and explained well. It's been valuable even though I've already had it setup for a while, I'll be re-doing it using your instruction. Cheers!
Would be awesome if you can do a video on dual sub setup with calibration
Do the crawl, place your subs on the two best positions.
Hey. I have Denon AVC-X3700H. When I run test tone listening, there's coming almost no sound from a subwoofer. Subwoofer gain is about 12 o'clock. I know that subwoofer is working. If I want to raise subwoofer level in test tone, I have to raise it about +10 dB to match other speakers levels. ?
Finally broke down and added a sub to my vintage 2 channel system, a Klipsch R-10SWi. I mostly stream via a Bluesound Node 2i. So my CD as well as Tidal runs through the 2i. The sub connected to the Node's sub out. On initial install, I was ready to pack the sub up for a return. Sounded like a bad boom box regardless of the gain/roll off setting. Luckily, for the sub, found this video. Used this technique to properly set and position. Thanks to the sub being wireless, the setup was just a matter of sitting it in my listening position. Much better. Found that the Sub-out on a Node is active regardless of the setting in BluOS. In either setting the volume control in BluOS will match the signal going to the sub. Can't say that Scott LaFaro's bass now makes angels cry, but it does widen the sound-stage for most of the music I listen to.
Thanks a lot, well explained. I have been looking for a video like this for weeks. You got a new subscriber!
When doing the "crawl", I also hold a balloon between my hands and you can really feel where the bass is at its peak in addition to using your ears.
never thought of that; great idea 👍🏻
Yeah, wicked.
Crawling the room with a baloon in hand. 😂😂 Just imaging what would someone make of it if they just enter the room. 😂
Hahaha I love how the dog is like..."what the hell is this guy doing?" Hahah
I now know how to manually set up speaker calibration. Thanks for the awesome video.
I watched several subwoofer placement videos this was the best explanation of the process that I’ve seen thank you.
Wow, thanks!
"The only one that has to like the sound from your speekers is you" I'm not so sure my neighbours agree with that 😅
Reality about walking the room to place the sub woofer.
Sit the wife in the chair , walk the perimeter of the room...
."how , about here dear?"
"No "
"what about here?"......
"defiantly not , it ruins the symmetry of the room"...
"how about over here , you can put your potted plan on it?.....
"Oh , if you must , but your doing the washing up tonight"
Lmao facts
#true #reallife That was the only convo I could think of during the sub crawl.
as always - clear and imformative as how the SW boom! Thanks Sir A 👍
Thanks so much for this video. Clear and concise. Just what I was looking for.
With subwoofers, can you present a video on adding and setting up a subwoofer in a two channel system without a subwoofer out. This is particularly common with vintage receivers and amps.
You can typically take a full range phono output from an amp and sent that to the sub, but you will need to manually set the crossover in line with your speakers response. Some subwoofers, Rel are particularly well know for this, will allow you to connect the speaker level cables to them.
use the pre out signal if you have that
Small speaker setting is very important, otherwise the LFE will go to your surrounds and front and push the drivers to far.
Really great information Andrew, thanks for sharing!
This is fantastic! Thank you for not bogging us down with technical terms and making it easy to understand
My pleasure, glad you're finding it helpful!
This is what youtube is for people who know their shit explaining shit to us.
Super helpful video!! Most videos stop at the subwoofer crawl. This explained all the other bits that I found super confusing. Also the random bits at the end are the best 😂👌👌
Great video. Funny, I had downloaded an SPL meter app just a few weeks ago to measure my band's rehearsal volume levels...but it hadn't occurred to me to use it for the test tone on my AVR. Lo and behold, all channels measured evenly--after years of naked-ear balancing, it's fun to see the results in a visual graph. Thanks!
you did not go over/explain LFE + main...
This was how to setup a subwoofer.. Not connect one..
@@Ade5 LFE + main / LFE only are part of some subwoofer sound set ups especially when using Marantz or Denon receivers. I use Marantz and would like to know this also?
Placement - lol. I have two SVS PB13 Ultras - they weigh 155 lbs each - they will be staying where they fit, please and thank you.
Learned something new about subwoofer placement. Thank you for this video!
That “Weeknd” tune is perfect for testing a subwoofer. Thanks for the recommendation!
I just got klipsch spl 120sw it shakes whole neighbour
same lmao
Yes, this manual method is all new to me. Seems very cool!
Cheers
Eric
Great to hear!
So after watching this video I decided to try this setup as suggested in this video.... IT'S AS IF I HAD SWAP OUT MY 10 INCH SUB FOR A 16 IN man what a difference such a simple setup can make iv always see other suggest the subwoofer crawl test but didn't think anything of it but it really works man. And by sub is a budget sub and I think I may hold off on an upgrade now because I thought my sub was the weakest link in my home theater system.
Great video man keep them coming
Excellent explanation with easy demo
This video is perfect, thanks!
Glad I watched this, because I was having problems where I tried a few different placements and found the base sounded amazing standing in certain spots, but when ever I sat in my chair I could hardly hear it 😢 thanks for the thorough video.
I like the style, how down on earth and speaking the way amateurs can understand, I'm a basshead so maybe hear from you about loudest subwoofers. Now I have over 30 year old 8 inch and SVS Sb4000 Those 2 work together really well actually..
Excellent straight forward video. Thank you.
Very helpful. Easy to follow. Many thanks!
Very very useful info. I will set up my subwoofer with confidence now thanks to you!
Best explanation, I have ever heard. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video and presentation, thank you! 👍👍👍
Fantastic is the word.
Another great video thank you, I like the trick of placing the subwoofer in your listening position.
I've been binging your educational stuff and learning so much. Thanks for making these friggin' excellent vids!
*also tag yourself, I'm the guy with the van.
Great stuff! Direct to the point and your voice is so cool!
Thanks for sharing this guide. Much appreciated 👍
Hey man I just watched your video and it helped me set up my Klipsch 12in subwoofer to my Onkyo receiver
I got the Musical Fidelity M5si after your review. Using the pre out but some ppl might get confused. Keep up the good work
This is everything I needed. Thanks a ton man!
Thanks. Didn't know any of that. Can't wait to try this!
Going to be doing some sub crawling this morning! Thank you for this
What a well done tutorial! Glad I found it. Subscribed!
This is my go-to video when helping people set up their subwoofers.
Thank you for this video! Was a massive help as I’m completely new to the home theatre scene so thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful video!
Thank you so much for this, I have always just placed the sub, next to the tv :D this helped me out alot!
Thank you for making this simple! Love the outro!
Thank you! This was very helpful.
Well explained..You did it so much better than many that I watched. Now my Sub-woofers are different in a good way. Good Job and Thanks
Glad it helped.
This was great, thanks dude! X
So informative and thank you! 👍
