Alright man, I am flat obsessed with the Hyundai Veloster in general and after thorough research and your extremely enjoyable and helpful review, I purchased the rally edition. Worth every penny in my opinion. I don't need the best thing available and this car is everything I could want. The handling is incredible and the power just makes me smile. I will consider down the road some minor upgrades but for now just going outside every morning before work and throughout the day, looking at how beautiful this car looks and how fun it is to drive excites me for any opportunity to hop in and speed through metro Atlanta. Thanks again for the awesome review my friend!

I watched every review I could find of this car and yours was the best. I bought one. You make it really clear about what you're getting and your review is spot on. Your idea of an open source infotainment is genius. Of course that would never fly! I love how you looked at every aspect of the car, including putting it on the lift, showing how the turbo works, etc.
The dealership I dealt with has no idea how to deal with the matte paint. Something you think that Hyundai would make clear, but they are in Korea and selling cars in the US is such a messed up situation anyway. Any problems I had, I took care of myself. In fact, they didn't know how to wash it correctly.
Your driving review is spot on. I bought this car because I wanted a good street car. I am not going to track it. I will modify it some, but nothing crazy. Maybe 250 hp and some computer tuning to smooth out the things you mentioned. Also, I have heard that running premium fuel adds 10hp. I don't doubt that and only run premium. Why wouldn't you in a car like this? Exclusivity is one of the main reasons I bought this model. Where I live the only thing exclusive is a Lamborghini. Well, I can't afford that and I've always thought it was fun to see a weird car model around such as a BMW Alpina, which you almost never see anymore. Same category for me.
For the blue I honestly thought I would never buy a blue car. Especially after your comments on the interior. That said, when I saw it, I knew. I knew it was something special and I loved it.
For me, it's perfect. If I wanted to buy a regular turbo Veloster and add what this car has would cost a few thousand. In fact the Rays J spec wheels would be two grand and they're basically free with the purchase price. Having people ride in the back? That's their problem!

A few years back I had a fun second job detailing cars for Hyundai. Best part about it was getting gas a mile away and romping on all the new Hyundai. There was this BMW driver tech who hated me because I told them the Genesis and Veloster had a great everyday clutch feel and nice engagement. Too bad some people can't get over the fact that a 25,000 car can have anything remotely close to their Euro car.

Test drove the Veloster turbo yesterday, it was fantastic $24,000 without the tech pack, $28,000 with tech pack, without the tech pack it's pretty much the same without blue link, navi, and moon roof, and i can deal with that, so my impression of this car its just blown away very responsive, and just beautiful

The fairest review I've seen on this car. Thank you for noting, "If you want to race it, it's not the one for you. If you want a fun, fast, good cornering, sporty car to drive, it's one of the best." Perfect. Not all of us are going to buy a car to race it, but to have something that puts a smile on your face, when you punch it, take it on a curvy road, without wanting to push the limits, or, just passing speed on a Los Angeles Freeway. Great review!

I never make UA-cam comments, but I hope you read this one Mr. Goose. I subscribed to your channel after seeing this video, and it's by far my favorite car-related channel. Just about every review shits on the Veloster because a GTI is faster, or an ST handles better, or whatever. Not every car is perfect. You seem to take a step back and make an honest assessment of the vehicle.
I never planned on buying a Veloster, but I happened to see a great deal on a Rally edition and I snagged it up. For someone like me (I'd call myself a part-time car guy) it's a fantastic car. It has roots in a sensible, economic car, but adds some fun power into the mix and makes a "fashion" statement if you will. I don't give a toss if I could have gotten a car for the same money that goes 0-60 two seconds faster, I'm not street racing on the highway, and nobody should put too much stock in the performance of a non-race/track car.
Rant aside, keep up the good work. Be a force against all the dubstep wubwubwubwub intro videos.

+DirtyScab I don't understand why people s*** on the Veloster all the time. It has a lot of character in the rally version is a damn good daily driver and really fun and best of all it actually has some character. Is it the most high tech best put together highest performance car ever no it doesn't have to be. It's a hatchback car and it does everything that a good hatchback car does and it's still efficient and lightweight but a lot of these guys get hung up on brand identity and they can appreciate it for what it is. Glad you're enjoying the car and pop and some dubstep bro

The Veloster Turbo can't be compared to either really. It's not fair to. The Turbo is still considered an economy car. It's supposed to be a fun economical car with good gas milage. You and Geese understand this well. Thank you good sirs. I do modify my 2016 VT however so I kind of went against what Hyundai wanted it to be.

This is the most accurate video of the rally edition. I had mine since 2017 and a deer totalled it last week. This was honestly one of my favorite, most unique cars. So fun in corners. The transmission is great. I honestly cried watching this missing my old rally edition. If anyone finds one and is debating I absolutely loved mine and knew others who had one and loved it.

Great review. It totally filled in all the gaps I had wondered about on a Veloster Turbo model. Other Hyundais are like that as well - push them to a certain limit and that's it, so I definitely know what I would be buying. For an every day driver + the warranty, it's about all the car I would ever need. It's still a consideration on my shopping list. Thanks for the honesty and good points. I have to agree about Hyundai feedback, they listen to their customers and that's why I'll still buy their cars. All of the changes customers and fans requested that happened, also applied to the Accent, Elantra, etc and fast. About a year after people made recommendations, those showed up in the cars at a dealership. It blew my mind and it's very detailed things too, like reversing an LCD or adding blindspot mirrors, etc. All around this brand makes me happier about no nonsense.

I’ve been driving my Veloster for 1 year now and I know that everything you stated about the Veloster in this review is very accurate and well said . I also feel that is a great enjoyable sporty feeling hatch but no track car . You feel a little risky around 100mph and feels loose in the rear over bumps even at 50mph

Honestly best review to date. I own a new gen coupe and the gf has the vested turbo. I atually adore her turbo for all the points you made and just it's utter utility. Hyundai service up here in WI is terrible and exactly as described. I laughed because you guys couldn't have stated it better. They give you a warranty but good luck enforcing it. Honestly though fantastic review. Really great camera work in both this and the Lexus 200 review.

I just purchased a 2014 turbo with 20k miles and I'm very happy with the little car. Shifting from 6th to 4th to pass slowpokes brings a big smile to my face. There are lots of aftermarket items so I have set up a separate savings account. The warranty on these cars, at least on paper, is better than any others. This car meets all my needs so far.

Ok, 5800 mile update/some things Ive observed about the VT Rally: The short throw shifter is truly great, excellent feel and engagement/just the right amount of mechanical feel. The car did well in all the snow we have had in the North East so far this year with the stock tires. I never got stuck or crashed :) and I use my car m-f for work as I am on the road all day. The car stutters a little bit when started on cold mornings but smooths out after a few mins. The mpg was avg was 31ish in mixed driving but since the weather turned colder it has dropped to about 26mpg avg....kind of disappointing. The car hides dirt well due to the matte paint. Seats are comfy. Suspension is sporty without beating you up. Could be a little sharper but for a Hyundai not bad at all. 3rd door is very handy for grabbing things out of the back. Much better than 2 door coupes. The car has an overall quality feel to it, I will liken it to Hondas of the 90's-2000 era. Everything feels like it will hold up and continue to work for a very long time. My other car is a Mini Cooper, and as much as I hate to admit it, the quality longterm feel doesnt seem to be there as much as in this Hyundai. Cant really explain better than, it is just a feeling. All the interior pieces seem to work well together and feel as though they will last and continue to work, except for the leather seats, they seem to be creasing and wearing fast. Otherwise this Rally edition VT has met or exceeded my expectations. Almost forgot to mention, the clutch is very touchy, Im used to it now...but it is easily stalled if not careful.

The clutch work great man. You just have to get accustom to the fact it engages at the top of the travel. Most clutches are in the middle to lower portion. Going from my Si with almost no travel before being engaged and my wife's R-Spec is tricky. Takes me a couple mins to adjust. But once I do get adjust it works great.

    Yes a car review!😁
The Hyundai dealer crap and dealer scams are 100% right on! My local Chevy dealer JUST did this... The Hyundai Elantra GT suffers from the suspension hop as well and its really bad! Many Veloster parts have been added to Elantra GT's to help this. Tons of people have recommended KYB shocks on the Elantra's to fix the suspension issues, some say now it's non existent. Great review!

This was my first car with a manual transmissions, and I absolutely loved it. I was able to learn in 2 hours, and every friend I had who was an enthusiast loved the fun that came with driving it! Sadly it was flooded/totaled a few months ago, and had to replace it with a 2013 turbo model. The hardest part aside from letting go is knowing that this will definitely be the car that enthusiasts seek after in 10 years from now. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a cheap daily car, reliable, and wants a genuinely unique looking car that doesn't fit in with civic and sti owners. In my opinion, this will be the 1990s version of the Honda Civics for the tuner scene. Both cars had base models that were ass, tune-able, and reasonably easy to maintain on your own.

Great review savagegeese! I actually remember those early days from the Veloster forums when you owned one. As a car enthusiast that have watched literally hundreds if not thousands of car reviews online anywhere on the web, yours definitely is the most informative, humorous, and entertaining I've watched yet. You deserve your own show!!!
I love those rally panels under the car, may have to add those onto my '13 if it allows. As for the rear hopping issue, if you're on stock suspension the aftermarket rear torsion bar you spoke of definitely helps. If you're on coilovers, then that already resolves the rear hopping around. If you decide to combo coilovers and the rear torsion bar, it's not noticable on the street, but track driven can knock off a bit of time.
Definitely waiting for a large power bump with a factory lsd for the next generation. Until that happens though, I'll be keeping my '13. Again, the best review hands down on any car I've ever watched!

I've got a 2014 turbo. I love it. 18,000 miles on it so far. no real complaints. of course I'd love another 100 horseys, but...definitely gets loose in the rear when you're pushing it. I did Chicago to New Orleans in just over 11 hours. The entire state of Mississippi I never dropped below 100 mph on the interstate(no lie). The car wants to go. Upgrade in tires is definitely a must. I've got 245 Michelin super sports. All in all, for a fun daily driver, its definitely everything I was looking for.

I have a loaded out 2016 Turbo 7 speed auto Dual clutch. I LOVE it for the $$$ - Looking forward to the new version - Where can you get this much car for the $$$? answer: nowhere! I get folks EVERYDAY that say " What is this Car?!!! I LOVE it... " Especially getting gas at the gas station... I did some extras exterior and interior. Its just a great fun car... I had an Audi TT ( actually 2- I bought the very 1rst one that came into Louisiana the first year- a year later bought the Turbo AWD-problems out the ass!) double the price of this car. Was it worth the extra? NO!!!!! The last one ( Turbo AWD)I had Audi USA had to buy it back!!! I was an Audi for life guy- had 6 in a row - 2 LEMONS... You were right on in this video perspective! Is it the best car? NOPE- But it didn't cost 50K either... so much fun - :-)

Great review. I've been looking for a few weeks now and after test driving the Subaru BRZ / Scion FRS, Subaru WRX Wagon, Honda S2000, Honda CRZ, the Veloster was always the one that I was most excited to get back into. Its interior is really nice with a mix of textured, hard, and soft plastics as well as leather on the door and seats. It still gets ~33 on the highway and is much roomier that it appears with actual usable rear seating and good trunk space. Also to note is that it doesn't need to run on premium gasoline. Visibility out of the front is good with the rear view being rather restricted. December 1st I picked up an Turbo R Spec and am really happy with it.

Good review. I have a 2014 Veloster turbo but its automatic. I was hesitant at first to purchase it because I really wanted a manual transmission but I've learned to live with it and even at times, like it. The sports mode makes it a lot more aggressive in the shift patterns. I've added a K&N Cold Air Intake and noticed a definite sound and throttle response increase. Overall, I cant complain. No matter how I drive the car I still get close to 30MPG on regular gas. Hyundai sent me a survey for some feedback on the car. To me, I would love to see two upgrades on this model. A louder exhaust tune and a 2.0 liter turbo option. I would gladly sacrifice MPG's for some more horsepower. Something in the 270 range =)

I would encourage all of you to go and try to test drive one if you are able to and are considering it. Great fun car that gets like 25mpg driving like an ass half the time. Less features than a normal turbo with some added options, but blue link seems to make up for all of that stuff for my taste at least.

Unfortunately I like in the Midwest and the climate prevents me from getting this or the Gray Matte finish version of the Turbo. I picked up the non turbo version, because money... and the shifter is really good. The throws are nice and short, the gearing is nice, the clutch has a ways to go, and the floor mounted gas pedal takes some getting used to, when you've never experienced one before but overall it's a really nice car for what it is. Eventually I'll get to modding it, but that's for another day.

Something interesting, Sir Goose... what you describe in the beginning with flexible and update-friendly infotainment is actually not far from what I was working on at NVIDIA back from 2013-2016. Bear in mind, though, that NVIDIA was trying to sell a whole turnkey solution that included both hardware and software, that not only eliminated the need for a lot of the ASICs that are all over the cars these days, but also required the OEMs to do less work on the software development side (they could focus a great deal more on UI/UX and visual layout). In turn, by working with the prior 3rd-party device manufacturers and integrating their existing firmware into our software stack, we were able to skirt some of that regulatory pressure that would come about with such a drastic change. All of that combined, while expensive, had the potential to save millions elsewhere.
However, the expense at the time meant that many clients were only willing to move it into the 6-figure and/or 7-figure cars first and later trickle it downstream.
I think the biggest reason why that approach even had a chance was because it meant total customizability right down to the individual vehicle if need be without much of any software engineering required. If there is anything I learned in those years, and I'm sure you must have realized it as well... software engineering is not much of a core competency for most automotive manufacturers. VW Group and Tesla may be exceptions, but they are exceptions nonetheless.
Still, with all the focus on self-driving and AI, I think anything related to UX pretty much became whispers on the wind.

If the Veloster is anything like the Genesis coupe, then cold weather performance may be due to the ECU pulling timing for reliability. Although after the engine reaches operating temp (150 ish degrees on the oil), the full power is on hand.

  • @xjoseywales
    @xjoseywales 9 років тому

Another great review. In regards to the Octane/Timing thing. It seems like they should sell them stock with an aftermarket style higher octane map. One where you have to hit a few switches to activate it. That way they can still market it as a low octane car, and anyone that cares enough can figure out how to make them run better with better fuel.

16:57 I've heard a lot of people say the surge went away when they remove the magnet from the little door below the air filter. I guess it's supposed to open and close with different throttle positions, but apparently it flaps open and shut and causes a weird air flow. Never felt it, I've had a K&N CAI since the day i bought mine.

I got my turbo in boston red pearl great looking car. They had this edition car there also. I will say this once. Do not get this car in that paint job. If you dont wash your own car then you cant wash it at all. The first auto car wash in that paint its ruined forever. The rally edition car comes with its own wash kit. You have to use a special towel to clean it and dry it with. Alot of work for a supposedly rally car. I trully enjoy mine. Great color, great 6 speed, its not fast but it is sort of quick. I do have the ultimate edition which does come with all the techy stuff which i like. The sound system is really good for this price segment. Good review savagegeese.

Yes, with turbocharged engines, higher octane fuel is recommended, if not required. Alongside providing some additional performance value (a couple horses), it will remove knock in many engines supplied with forced induction.
Regular unleaded can cause knock on many turbocharged cars. I have a 1999 SAAB 9-3 with an upgraded turbocharger and stage tune, and it would knock if it were not for me running 93 octane.
Now, as savagegeese says, in certain areas you can only purchase 91 octane (such as California), but it's possible even that increase may stop the knocking in your engine.
I recommend you try to purchase from TopTier stations (BP, Shell, Exxon to name a few examples), as they use a higher standard for refining petrol gasoline than just any regular station. You can use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest premium fuel in your area, and whether or not it's a TopTier formula. Alongside that, I recommend running two bottles of Seafoam through your gas tank every 3000 miles to keep the innards clean of carbon buildup.
      Hope that helps, Steve!

    • @freezor80
      @freezor80 7 років тому

Hey guys, if the engine says 87 required, putting in higher octane is a pure waste of money. This engine is not programmed to run any better with high octane fuel. The roughness upon start up is a product of a direct injected engine with a turbo and all the innards not being up to operating temperature.

Hi SG. Quick question: Is it okay to drive my 2016 Veloster Turbo, once warmed up, with high rev gear changes (say up to 5k) all the time? Is it designed for that? If it's gonna wear the engine out in twice the time then I won't do it, however if I'll still get ten years of fun outta the car before trashing it then I'm good with that. I put Pennzoil Platinum in every six months religiously. Thanx.

Nice review. I own a 2016 R-spec. Got it for $20,000. I love it. It’s a fun commuter car. Suspension is great (I did add the rear torsion bar from Pierce Motorsports), definitely worth it and easy to install. Upgraded the fuel line and fuel pump. Getting it ready for a tune from 845 Motorsports. That 87 octane tuning from factory does ruin the performance aspect of the car. That B&M short shifter from factory compliments great with the transmission. I did 2 road trips already (2000+ miles each). It was a comfortable ride.
