I had a 2009 Maxima S for my first car. I personally liked it, the CVT and FWD were definitely it’s biggest downfall, because it’s a car that deserves RWD and a real trans, however, it was fairly quick. After all, it had a VQ, which also means it sounded pretty good. I put a cold air intake in and that was enough to give it a primal induction scream. While it’s not a very performance-focused sedan, it was a pretty good first car for me, a young high schooler who liked cars. Overall I really loved the car, and I was sad when I totaled it.

That's 43,000 canadian dollars, which is $32,000. I doubt you can even find a 2.0l base model stinger for that. I aligned a new 2.0l honda accord yesterday with an awesome front splitter, wheels and tires, lowering springs, and a tune, and trust me, it's better. I've also driven stock accords, and i still think they're better. I like the new maximas, but the reputation of those cvts is not good. I don't have a problem with how they drive. Personally, i think the cvt is a great way to use power, but nissan's cvts haven't been very reliable. Honestly, this segment is full of great cars, though.

I had a 2018 Maxima S as a loaner for about 5 days and actually kinda fell in love with it. (Completely shocked me.) But it drove extremely well imo, very smooth and comfortable. The “zero gravity” seats are just as comfortable as my S class seats too. The base model stereo was ridiculous (seriously it bumped crazy hard for stock, let alone base model) and it was surprisingly fast.
I did a drag against my friend’s 06’ Charger RT and won in the Maxima by a good three car lengths. 0-70 the maxi struggled because of wheelspin and CVT sluggishness. But after 70 it caught up to and gapped the Charger hard. (The Charger was totally stock and I’m great condition with 70k miles. ) despite having a CVT I had so much fun driving the car and really enjoyed my time with it. It was pretty damn fast, quiet, and comfortable. Also the VQ cold start is actually really nice even in the Maxima. I got a whole new respect for them after that.

    • @BeesonsCars
      @BeesonsCars 5 років тому +1

Also the Q50 interior is definitely nowhere near as nice imo. I test drove a Q50 3.0T today and while it drove a lot better, the interior wasn’t really that nice. The dual screen infotainment was completely garbage and it’s unavailable with cooled seats, heated rear seats, Apple CarPlay, android auto, and more. If the Maxima was the complete same except RWD and with the Infiniti 7 speed auto I would go out and buy one instantly. It’s really actually a great car.

For anyone trying to use adaptive cruise control on the highway, here’s my tip for smooth responses to speed changes. I have a Sonata with a 6-speed auto that can shift over to manual gear select. Once you’re ready to set the cruise at 50+ mph, just slide D over to manual select and keep it in gear 6.
When that slowpoke you’ve been pacing gets off the road and opens up your radar to resume from 60 back up to 70, it just adds some throttle to speed back up rather than dropping a gear and adding throttle. It’s changed the way I road trip.

I have a 2017 and haven't felt the negative difference with the cvt expressed by about 99% of people. I live in phoenix area with a lot of freeways with varying windiness, and have found it to feel like driving some kind of watercraft. More of a gliding/flying like quality that I have't had with other cars. Which is why i bet they tried to simulate the F/A-18 hornet cockpit. Which, as a former tech on them, is pretty similar. I noticed the resemblance before finding out it was their actual intention. really cool! It hasn't been worse so much as just different. When I'm weaving in and out i get a quick response that's fun. and once you find the see spot the paddle shifters can be pretty effective. The negative, of course, is that you can't really hot rod it out with the cvt or turn it into a drag racer. If you want somethjing like that I'd get something like a charger or challenger. But I don't think that was their intention. Slapping on a cold air and exhaust still makes it pretty fun though IMHO.

I do a lot of highway miles, it’s comfortable, interior is dang nice, handles ok, good power, Bose stereo is half decent. The CVT isn’t great but doesn’t bother me like the old cvt’s did. Torque steer is a bit much but what do you expect from a 300hp fwd car. I’ve looked at other cars but nothing in a similar price range has had everything that I’ve wanted. Would buy it again and it’s still a good looking car imo.

I’ve owned a ‘17 SR for 3 years now, and driven 50,000 miles in that time. I’ve been nothing but happy with it. Definitely not perfect. But I’ve done everything from daily commuting to multiple cross-country road trips. It’s reasonably quick, supremely comfortable, has all the creature comforts and tech you could want, and is still prettt decent on gas for a 3.5L V6. I average around 27mpg combined, with that being around 35mpg highway, combined with an 18.5gal fuel tank and you can get pretty far. The ACC is great for road trips. The audio system is very good. I even had the chance to take it to the Tail of the Dragon last year, and while it’s not an 86 or a Miata, it’s definitely not a Charger/Challenger either. I thought it handled smaller than it actually is (maybe because when I took it there it only had about 2k miles on a brand new set of Michelin PSAS4’s). Overall, I can only have 1 car, that needs to do everything. Has to be quiet, comfy, loaded with tech and features, but also cheap to buy, own, maintain, and also be faster than normal traffic, and be relatively fun. The Maxima ticks all the boxes for me so I’m glad to own one.

Please make a yearly Throttle House video intro compilation. Please please please.
It’s a shame that Nissan still has a lot of long term ownership issues with dumb things like transmissions and premature rust; because the interior and exterior styling is phenomenal and mated to a pretty reliable/ubiquitous engine. Saw one on the road and was awestruck by the handsome front styling on their new sedans. The prices are relatively fair and they give financing to just about anyone but if it can’t reasonably hit 150,000k in 10 years without any issues at all then it’s just not for me. And as time moves on finding new cars like that is generally getting harder and harder.

Nice video guys! Sad to see Nissan does not offer a manual transmission and AWD in this car being their flagship sedan, knowing the Altima has the AWD option already, they could easily do it for the SR model. Maximas have always been a great value for the money, but I feel nissan is missing out on the sports sedan market and their SR models are not what they used to be. I owned a 2002 3.5SE Altima automatic and the engine was great! although Torque steer was significant at times. A friend had the Altima SR and it was a sharp looking car with great handling and very fast too... I upgraded later to a 2012 370Z manual and it was a world of difference, but loved both engines! Miss my 370Z sniff sniff! Cheers. Jorge

My dad has this car and as nice as the features are at this price point, and as nice as the engine sounds at start up, the bottom line is because of the CVT and FWD, I always exit the car feeling disappointed. Mind you, I get IN feeling excited but that feeling goes away too quickly. The car simply writes checks it cannot cash, and that’s a shame because if Nissan were actually serious about the whole “4 Door Sports Car” thing, all it would have to do to accomplish that goal is two things: Give it an automatic transmission and AWD. Done, that’s it. Gosh, you know how many people would be absolutely thrilled if that happened? So, so many, and that’s just based on UA-cam comments from Maxima videos! Heck, if they were REALLY serious, they could give it the V8 from the Armada plus, of course, AWD. But that aside, I would settle for the great sounding V6 with an automatic and AWD. Who’s with me?

And as an aside - I do miss my 2001 Maxima AE with stick.

  • @SpiderCollector000

I had a 92 Nissan Maxima for a while.. Parents bought it brand new and drove it for years and by 2010, I ended up taking it from them as a second car when they got a new car. It was pretty reliable.. though the car had some weird issue with the engine (which was very rare) with the head gasket leaking at only 35k miles, and it was never overheated at all, and always serviced at the dealer. After contacting Nissan, they agreed that even though it was a little out of the warranty range, they agreed to fix the engine on their dime. Its more than Honda did for my 99 model that had a defective auto trans which Honda kept brushing under the rug and claimed it was fine, but I ended up having to rebuilt it with an updated Honda kit at 30k miles, and the trans finally stopped slipping was not rolling backwards from a stop with my foot on the gas. Honda got sued over these trans and the recall did not cover mine since its a 4 cyl 2.3 VTEC model instead of the V6 - I still have that as a beater now with only 58k miles on it, and ever since the trans was handled, the car started driving normally for the first time ever since it was purchased at least. In the Maxima I had, I can tell you the torque-steer was pretty bad, but the car was really able to burn out and actually lay some rubber pretty good, with no cheating by using brakes or e-brake at all. I loved coming to a stop sign and turning the wheel to the right to get around the corner and flooring it, and it would burn the front tires pretty good without the steering wheel pulling hard, and it would straighten out after the turn even with the tires still spinning.. lol
It did not have a ton of power back then at 190hp, but it was enough even with the auto trans to really surprise many people.. I kept the car for a while, but when it hit 160k miles the fuel injectors went out which was apparently a known issue. Also, the issues with rubber bushings in the suspension, steering rack, and also engine mounts kept wearing prematurely and there were no leaks at all. My parents had all the worn parts changed out, and it was ready to be changed again after 2 years and maybe 15k miles, which was pretty ridiculous. Still a good car, but at that point I think aftermarket bushings (non-OEM) would have fixed the issue and been the way to go. I sometimes wish I did not get rid of the car.. I was truly impressed that the car had glass headlight fixtures, which was rare by the 90's!
I almost bought a 2003 Maxima, or maybe a 2004 if I remember properly which had the VQ35 (just as it was changed from the 3.0) and with the 6 speed manual.. What a fun car that would have been after getting used to the massive torque-steer that one must have had especially with the extra power and manual trans.
I would absolutely love to get a 90's 300ZX Turbo, if I could. It would be fun to play with, and it was WAY ahead of its time, and I also prefer it to the newer ones even though the newer ones are supposed to be better.
The new Maxima's seem overpriced to me, and should have better specs including the 3.7 engine and other trans options instead of CVT. I actually liked the look of the 2009 model the best. With all the other offerings out there, I think it should have used the 3.7 with some extra power to set it apart, and go to RWD or AWD.

I'd probably go for the Toyota Avalon Touring.

Never bought nothing else but the maxima.... Never had problems with the cvt. Don't sleep on the new maxima...The maxima is Nissan best kept secret...oh and by the way...it's fast as hell.
