I have the 2020 Sentra SR and love it (it's my first car). I've driven tons of cars around and different cars of the same class (Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, etc) and I like this car the most. It's very smooth driving and it accelerates and handles extremely well. Like in the video, it's acceleration isn't the most punchy and it definitely gets beat out by the Civic, but it's super smooth and the sport mode will carry you when you need more performance. For reference, I live in NYC so I'm not zooming anyway; however, when I go out into the country, I'll usually flip on sport mode to keep up with traffic/driving on mountains. I've also driven it in all weather conditions (snow, hurricane, ice, heat wave) and it drives very well The infotainment system is the best one I've seen of this car class, but I wish the Spotify integration were better. The safety features are also fantastic - automatic braking, reverse camera sensors, and LDW all work extremely well. Plus, i really like the styling of the car - it's very sharp, especially in the SR variant. It's no lamborghini, but I get lots of compliments on it all the time. Overall, I'm super happy with this purchase and I'd recommend it to anyone who's not going to be zipping down highways at 90 MPH (even tho I have done that)!
Again, my Altima CVT is fine almost 200k miles later. Never serviced (never planned to keep it this long either). Yes, its disposable to me at this point, but the CVT is NOT the reason. Its been very reliable and Nissan earned my respect. MPG is amazing, city or highway...much higher than EPA estimate.
I just bought a new '21 last week. Prior to my two test drives, I was really worried about the acceleration. After driving it, my worries were gone. It is absolutely fine. It's not a sports car, but it is more than enough. This car is more comfortable than my mom's Corolla and looks good. I got the SV with premium package and it's terrific. SG is spot on about the tranny and not knowing it's a CVT under normal driving. I've had no problems merging onto highway. Controls and interior are every bit as good as Toyota. You simply cannot beat the value here.

We have a 2008 Nissan Sentra that was daily driven by my mom for a long time. We kept it around as a beater car after she bought a new car and 13 years later it's still kicking just fine. It's, and this is a shocker, on it's original CVT transmission but we changed the fluid 3 times so far. It's not a special car but it's done it's job without failure since we owned it and the only numbers that matter with a car like this are low maintenance costs and MPGs. Great review as always.
I had tested this car for a week and actually had no issues with the CVT. It's pretty responsive. The rear legroom is impressive; you should check it out yourself if you are shopping for a compact car.

Sure, they're establishing a brand identity, just like luxury cars do. They've hit upon a pretty nice look that scales well, and good for them recognizing that.
People cry about Sentra CVT thinking its still the B17 era. Its a car meant for you to put high milage/kms on and have the best fuel economy available to you. Its not a Z, Type R, or even a GR, and people try to think it is one. Then they complain and cry after it blows a transmission by constantly running it at 5-6k rpm. Plus, this line is one of the 8-9 cars of its size and class to offer a manual variant.
My friend Frank (yeah bro I’m calling you out) with his dodgy credit score could only get financed for a Nissan or a Dodge, that says a lot. Between the two obviously Nissan is generally a better brand for a grocery getter...between the Sentra and a Dart I think it’s a no brainer. It’s good to see Nissan is attempting to fix a lot of their shortcomings, and I agree with Mark, moving away from Jatco CVT’s would effectively fixed the major mechanical issues the brand deals with and win back that niche enthusiast following they once had. Long gone are the days of the Sentra SE-R and economy RWD compacts like the 180SX (which I suppose the BRZ/86 spiritually replaced.
True for a long time, sadly. Nissan deserves a better fate than this. I'm cautiously optimistic, as the most recent cars are pretty good, transmissions possibly excepted, and even those may have improved. We'll see.

With the manual shift (which we get here in Canada), the Sentra is incredible value for money, fun to drive, entry level car- independent rear suspension too. What a shame. Reminds me why I don't want to get the first 2-3 years of production for the Nissan/Infiniti g37. Had something to do with needing to do a gasket repair I believe that'd randomly need to be fixed at only 70k-120k miles which would cost a couple of bags o money to fix. I believe the issue was fixed for the 2011+ model years. Then all the issues putting in a simple automatic into their sentras was, how'd they screw that one up? lol it's like they didn't learn from Honda's mistake in the mid 2000s from their accords. Just makes me never want to get a car made after 2010 except a handful amount of actual models let alone the brands. Unless ofc they come with a manual trans such as a Z. Here's hoping...
They're a solid, affordable car. A little small for my needs, but far more comfortable than a Corolla. And starting in May, the Sentra Cup race league is on in Canada. It's gonna be fun.

The old adage of fast, cheap, reliable pick two still applies to these. It's just now it looks and feels miles better quality than the economy cars of the past.
I absolutely love this car. I love the looks quality of material and fit finish-beutiful. I drove one and it was absolutely enjoyable to drive. 149 hp, and 147 Lb Ft of torque...more power than anyone will ever need. Strait line: 0-60 mph:8.8 seconds. That works just fine for me. I drove one and you're right, you don't even notice that it's not a hot rod. It's got plenty of power for everyday use. And, the styling is high end-sexy, beautiful. I LOVE this car. I want one, and in terms of value, bests everything else in its class. Trust me, I love my Honda's, but every years they're getting more and more expensive, prices out of reach of the average consumer in the market for a compact car. The Civic Touring-$30,000-NOPE, won't pay it. If you get the $24,000 civic LX-2022, it's doesn't have shit in it, and the door panels are ALL hard plastic except for the armrests-Shame on you Honda.
That interior actually looks really good for that price point. As you said, if you can get over the marginal powertrain, it seems like a nice choice. Of course, as of the 2021 model year, even Hyundai has moved to a CVT for the cheaper stuff, unfortunately. So how many cars in that segment even offer a decent transmission anymore?
Cvts are good depending how you drive. I used to drive a regular automatic and I used to have the same notion about cvts before I finally own one and by the way its a toyota cvt im referring to. With cvts unlike automatic you do not have to hit pedal to the metal unlike regular automatic and I find the driving with cvt smooth and the best part is the gas mileage, its night and day compared to regular automatic. I find cvts perform better on small engines as you don't necessarily need the power to get it going. Also different companies make cvts whereas nissan cvts are made by jatco which people know whereas other manufacturers like honda, Toyota use different companies in creating cvts. One big thing that people should worry about which majority of people are overlooking are turbo engines and personally that's going to be an expensive fix down the road compared to non turbo. Only time will tell, however my point is not all cvts are bad but because of nissans reputation almost 90% of comments going to other reviewers who do similar things to what savagegeese does feel like saying to everybody cvts are horrible blah blah, the fact is once you get to experience it, you might find something surprising. There are also people who prefer manual transmissions but that number is very small which explains why car manufacturers are ditching them as no one is buying and also hard to sell as well.
@@OrdinaryG33K-SF right with mazdas speaking from experience, sure they are great cars and my father owns a mazda 3 himself while I own a toyota. One thing with mazdas that I will admit is sure their material build up is high quality but on a long term upkeep they become expensive to maintain and the new ones use torsion beam for suspension which is a fail whereas previous models used multi link rear suspension. Now with turbo engines im not sure about that and for those couple reasons alone won't make get the mazda even though I considered one before I ended up with a toyota.
I really miss the 91 and 95 Sentra, which were super plain but had powerful engines for the class, good handling for the class and top notch quality for the class. An honest, good car much like the old Protege.

It was actually better than the Corolla during the early 90s. They had the Sentra SE-R. It was one of the most critically acclaimed performance compact sedans ever. It was the Civic Type R before there was a Type R. Those where the days.

I have a 2020 and it has been the best car I have had yet. Personally, it is Nissan number 5 and I could not be more happy with Nissan overall. The CVT has never been an issue for me, in fact I like it better than a normal automatic.
I am glad you're enjoying your Sentra love these new models. Fell in loved with styling last year (2020) see more on the road now. Nissan is a comeback their new lineup is amazing. I hope you continue get many trouble free miles out of your Sentra. Think the new model is better less problems with these cars think CVT has got better as well.
I've only owned an 06 Altima SE-R and then upgraded (or downgraded really) to a 17 Altima 3.5 SL, but I don't think I'm going to invest any farther into Nissan seeing where their new cars are going. They've basically condensed the altima and the sentra into the same vehicle, the interior looks so bland and uncomfortable compared to older models, the cvt on my current makes me sick if I'm being honest, and their cars really do seem to fall apart randomly. I thought they'd be moving towards something better in the future and trying to learn to swim but it seems like they're still barely keeping their head above water, and at this point the company just needs to let go.
I can assure you the interior is very comfortable and much roomier than older Sentras. It's one of the nicest interiors in this segment, with only the Mazda3 significantly better, but at a higher price. The Elantra interior is also competitive, but the Nissan is much nicer than the Corolla, Civic, Impreza, or Forte.
My wife got a Honda Civic Sport back in 2019. Due to a job change I am now driving it. Some days I have a two hour commute and I’m getting 37+ mpg and yet it’s still very tight and sporty. For $21k it has lane keep assist and brake assisted cruise control. I’m super impressed. In my opinion it’s the best combination of mpg and sportiness, with 180 hp. And the Sonic Grey color is amazing.
I really like it. With a manual, I´d take it as my first car if I had the choice. It looks great, I love the interior and it really is timeless, as you said. Really good little car.
@@alpharonin_ It's sad that they're stopping selling them in the US. They're such honest little cars and are only lacking a better engine to be great. I kept hoping they'd solve that problem, because I might have considered one then, but with the current drivetrain they were just a little too strained for traveling long distances.
Not sure about the US but up here in Canada the sentra is still offered with a manual across most trims. Which is good because it's the biggest flaw of the car for most and maybe the fact it doesn't have a more powerful engine like past models.
Personally, I would spec out a Sentra SV with the premium pkg so you get the luxury style interior, but keep the eco friendly 16 inch wheels to retain the 40mpg rating. This would be a great daily driver in my opinion.
While I’m definitely not a fan of CVT or any type of engineering that robs the car of character, dreading the eventual mass acceptance of EVs, the problems with the Nissan CVT is incredibly overblown especially in the last decade or so. I had a Murano with zero problems and have known many people with CVT Nissans and they had zero problems. And the newest Nissan CVTs actually are quite good. The CVTs need to have thier fluid changed at the proper intervals which most people don’t do.
I think unfortantely, Nissan settled a class action on CVTs on their highest volume products with another one spun up. Its not a matter of if they work anymore its the reputation is trashed.

Nissan is a brand I historically love. The skyline, 300z, 90’s maxima, etc and a few other cars are so iconic it’s hard not to love the brand. But their mainstream cars are turrible now. On the plus side their new trucks are sweet.
I recently borrowed a 2020 Altima SR, with a CVT, and was utterly BLOWN AWAY at how smooth the CVT was, and how AMAZING the gas mileage was, especially highway (44MPG)! I frequently drive the Cleveland to NYC route (and back), and often have to stop for gas at least once with most cars i've taken this trip with. It usually takes a tank and a half to make the trip on most cars, but with the Altima, it took only 3/4 of a tank of gas to drive the 490 miles in about 7 1/2 hours (with the trunk loaded, 2 people and a 60 pound dog)! I currently drive a manual GTI, but would consider a car with a CVT if they lasted as long as a manual or traditional old school auto transmission. Long term reliability and durability is a MUST. I've heard that Aisin CVT's are better than Jatco. Comments?
it’s interesting because all my white friends that are used to driving crappy Chevorlets and Fords fall in love with Nissans and Hyundais. the hard part is getting them to appreciate the reliability and price jump to a Toyota, Honda, and Mazda.
I own this car and it's been three years, he is right about the CVT, it does fake shifts and feels just a little better than old CVTs but I really think it's engine need a little more power taking in consideration some competition in the same category have more horsepower.
I own a 2015 Xterra Pro-4X and would put it up against any Toyota product on "bulletproofness" any day! I also own a 2017 370Z 6MT which has been faultless and it has been tastefully modded, and I drive it like a nutcase.
At my age I'm looking less for performance and more for safety bells and whistles... rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian alert. Have to keep my sanity somehow on those days of three hours commuting. The 21 Sentra seems to have everything I'm looking for.
Yup agreed. As catchy as the Sentra looks, just know that it can be deceiving. Can't trust a Nissan especially with a CVT. And if they have improved the quality, only time will tell.
The Corolla is likely to be more reliable, but the new Sentra interior is much nicer than the very drab Toyota. If the prices were even I'd have to pick the Corolla, but I suspect that with discounts and bargaining you can probably get the Sentra for a lot less.

Yes, its disposable to me at this point, but the CVT is NOT the reason. Its been very reliable and Nissan earned my respect. MPG is amazing, city or highway...much higher than EPA estimate.

mustve been made on the right day of the week
I just bought a new '21 last week. Prior to my two test drives, I was really worried about the acceleration. After driving it, my worries were gone. It is absolutely fine. It's not a sports car, but it is more than enough. This car is more comfortable than my mom's Corolla and looks good. I got the SV with premium package and it's terrific. SG is spot on about the tranny and not knowing it's a CVT under normal driving. I've had no problems merging onto highway. Controls and interior are every bit as good as Toyota. You simply cannot beat the value here.

HA! So true.
We'll see.

Pretty much just the Mazda3.

Haha! Good one.
Love these honest, to-the-point reviews. Glad I found your channel!
The Sentra reached its peak in the early 90s. It was on par with the Corolla
It was actually better than the Corolla during the early 90s. They had the Sentra SE-R. It was one of the most critically acclaimed performance compact sedans ever. It was the Civic Type R before there was a Type R. Those where the days.
As an owner of several Sentras in the past, I would say they peaked in 2006. THEN it went down hill.
The new one is way better than the Corolla
Those Corollas were not very good. The Civic trounced both of them.
The 91-94 SE-R really is an amazing car, I own one it’s the most fun car I own out of my mr2 turbo, 1j swapped is300, k24 swapped rsx type S and my 350z
Now that Ghosn is gone they can start building better cars.

The problem is that rental cars get plenty of abuse.
Since wearing my SG gentleman goose t-shirt, I feel more virile.
Does the tv retract for when you want to drive?
I subscribed and the videos on this channel started showing up in my feed.
Still driving my ‘98 Sentra I hot 20 years ago. It’s a pos but doesn’t want to die
That car is too stupid to die (in a good way)
LMAOOOOO 🤣gotta love those ending clips , great review as always. Now I don’t know between a Sentra manual or a Corolla sedan manual 🤔. Help please 🧐
Corolla, nissan has been a big led down for last 10+ years. I wouldn't risk your $ in it.
Yup agreed. As catchy as the Sentra looks, just know that it can be deceiving. Can't trust a Nissan especially with a CVT. And if they have improved the quality, only time will tell.
Corolla. You're welcome.
It’s not even a fair fight between those two cars.
The Corolla is likely to be more reliable, but the new Sentra interior is much nicer than the very drab Toyota. If the prices were even I'd have to pick the Corolla, but I suspect that with discounts and bargaining you can probably get the Sentra for a lot less.
I remember the old Centra R the little econo rocket . Inexpensive fast boxy , loved by early boy racers...
