The song was about an x girl friend he passed in the subway with a new boyfriend. He went home and wrote the song. He said subway sounded better than the underground which they called it. He did jump in the icy ocean. Should watch the outtakes of the making of the video. Some great songs on back to Bedlam which is being rereleased this month for the 20th anniversary
It's amazing what a voice can do to a song that otherwise might have been just ok. Check out John Mayer's cover of Tom Petty's Free Fallin', live at Nokia. 140mil views. So good.
It’s often, only when people see the original music video, do they understand what the song is really about. Not only is James Blunt an excellent songwriter, his visuals always add that extra meaning to his poetic words. If you want a James Blunt song that won’t leave you a tearful emotional wreck, try ‘The Greatest’
James Blunt was told by the British General Jackson not to obey the orders of American General Clark who was the senior in charge during the war in Bosnia to "prevent Russian forces taking control of Pristina airport saying "I will not start WW3 for you. General Clark was later withdrawn and General Jackson assisted the Russians patrol of the airport as Russia was technically part of the peace keeping force. Perhaps a tenuous link but James Blunt could have started WW3 had he obeyed Clark's orders
Blunt stated in an interview that he saw his ex on the underground (tube) with a new boyfriend that he wasnt aware of and wrote this song straight after.

He’s fell for her he can’t have her so he’s ending his life metaphorically
He had to jump twice. But he was in the coastguard before he went in the army.

Mr Pumpkin
Beatiful voice, but some of the lyrics are iffy. Don't like the fact of implied sui.ide.
