Pro tip: Always switch to your melee weapon before you end a character's turn. Having a ranged weapon equipped does not impose the Threatened condition on the enemy, and enemies are free to move around you without provoking attacks of opportunity.

It can be tough to group them all super close and find a clear spot to throw it and get them all in it. What's easier is if you drop a potion on the ground, group everyone around it in a little square and then attack the potion. Then you don't have to worry about not getting everyone in it or struggling to find a clear little spot to throw it

If you have Scratch the dog in your camp. You then get a summon outside of camp to summon him and he will then be able to find buried loot without needing to pass a perception check. Note, Scratch can be used in combat and can pick up charecters and attack. As he is a summon if he dies he is not permanently gone.

Tip: broken pieces of weapons and gear can be combined to reform very nice gear. Example: The spear tip from the Owl bear cave can be added to a broken shaft to form "Vision of the Absolute" a spear that blinds the target on a hit.
Tip: loot and container inventory windows can be expanded to larger size.
Tip: after clearing an area go do something else, but come back a second or even third time with fresh eyes. You will find all manner of things you missed. Tracks that lead to a cave. Wanted posters. Loose rocks with treasure under them. Etc. Im poking around in the blighted village for the upteenth time and just found a few more things I missed.
Tip: stop, close your eyes and just listen in any area you are traveling. You can hear a number of things. Monsters, arguments, wild animals, and other audible clues of what is nearby.
Tip: can't jump down a ledge without taking damage or can't get back up a cliff? Bring some empty crates from camp, stack them up and use them to change the drop. Kind of cheese, but your only solution in some cases with out a spell, skill, or working ropes.
Tip: from the previous tip you can collect empty crates, barrels, and vases into your inventory and send them to camp. Use them to organize things or build silly sized towers of stacked crates to get to impossoble locations.
Tip: jump like a bunny in combat. Walking through mud, acid, water, and fire all has penalties in combat. Jump to high and dry places and avoid penalties and damage. Some boots give you a free bonus jump after a dash so you can cover some far distances.
Tip: you can pick up corpses and put them into inventory. Take someone back to camp for a rez or just make big piles as a warning. I don't think there is an alert mechanic in the game so hiding bodies this way doesn't seem to be part of the game.

    • @clem_10

It used quite a lot of dice roll mechanics but they were all auto rolled and didn't stop the game or anything. It had no turn based element. It's the first time I have played a DnD game, and I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about the gameplay. Literally NOTHING! I was gifted this game a little over a week ago (mothers day 2024), and I've restarted it 6 times. After each attempt, I searched for tips and explanations as to how to approach this game. All the many many MANY videos I've watched I have only found a handful of helpful tips, I think... I'll find out as I play. This video is a GEM among the dirt clods I've watched. Thank you! Although I'm am no closer to figuring out certain aspects of the game, (Let's start with character and combat set up and understanding the terminology - like "not enough resources" ) I at least feel some hope right now, that I might eventually get the answers I need to settle into a game and go. Thank you for your great video. Now, I'm going to see if you have any others regarding BG3 and how to play.

A tip I’d add specifically regarding combat against spellcasters: concentration spells are a huge part of magic combat, and letting enemies keep them going can lead to massive issues for your party. However, an enemy has to make a check to keep up the spell for every hit they take. If a cleric is running around with spirit guardians, it might be worth it to ignore other enemies until you break that concentration. Imo a great method for this is the magic missile spell. It hits anywhere from 3 to a whopping 8 times depending on how high of a level you cast it. While the idea of using your biggest spell on magic missile may seem wasteful, if your tank is going to be knocked out on their next turn due to a moonbeam or something, it might be wise to barrage the enemy mage to make them drop the spell and give your ally that one extra turn to potion up and go crazy.

    • @fakechemicals
      @fakechemicals Рік тому +10

To add to this magic missile is a level 1 spell that unerringly hits it's target, each missile dealing its damage discreetly. That means that if a spellcaster maintaining concentration is hit with 3 missiles, they will have to roll concentration 3 times.

    • @PenitusVox
      @PenitusVox Рік тому +10

On the topic of magic missile, it's also a great spell to use to finish off multiple enemies at once. I find that often times I'll have like 3 enemies at 2-5 HP and magic missile is great to knock them all off at once, particularly since it never misses.

The cantrip for guidance is really useful but i would also add that it is a concentration so the amulet has way more value than you would think. On Shadowheart if you use her guidance it will overwrite any other spell that is a concentration ending her previous spell if it has a full day duration. Pass Without Trace is a spell she gets at level 2 which gives a huge bonus to stealth which effects the full party, until you use a long camp. Its also a level 2 spell which you really dont want to be casting over and over. Putting this Guidance amulet on someone else more melee focused saves her using up all her spell slots.

Tip 1. Pick up Chest of the Mundane from Arcane tower in Underdark. It will compress your heavy items down to the weight of dishes and cups for later unpacking. It is arguably the best item in the game and you can get it relatively early. It can easily compress 600 weight down to 30, 20 being the chest.
Tip 2. You can throw the Iron Flask with the Spectator inside and it will spawn a hostile lvl 5 boss. You can throw it into the group of enemies and they will start fightting each other. Personally I trivialised the grove siege with this, Spectator basically soloed most of the enemies before going down, while my party and the allies used ranged attacks. And the allies were smart enough to not shoot the Spectator. 0 casualties among friendly npcs. And you get the exp.

Was planning to take down 3 NPC in a ruined village and was scouting the location for sneak attack turns out you can convince them to play for you so do check if the npc's have a dialouge option by moving mouse above them before attacking i guess

For the combat turn order, you can take turns out of order, so long as your characters are next to each other in the lineup. And you don't need to complete their turns before switching.
So imagine the turn order looks like this: Asterion > Enemy1 > Shadowheart > Wyll > Enemy2.
Asterion's turn plays out fully, then Enemy1 has it's turn, but now Shadowheart AND Wyll are active at the same time, so you can preform an action with one, switch to the other for an action, switch back again and do something else, etc. Enemy2 only gets its turn once End Turn has been pressed for both characters.

    My random tips:
    1) "Add to Wares" marks it for selling at the next shopkeep NPC with 1 button.
    2) If you have a lot of camping food, take the hint and long rest- The game is actually designed to have you camp more than you'll likely be inclined to, because that's when a lot of "interstitial plot events" and cutscenes happen, as well as connecting with your team NPC's. (I don't think this part was designed well, there should be a "fatigue" mechanic or something.)
    3) Many of the powerful spells require "concentration" and there's 2 drawbacks to that- A party member can only "concentrate" on 1 spell at a time, and the "concentration" can be broken by being attacked, which triggers a roll against your Constitution. So don't drop CON too low on your characters whose Concentration you depend on.
    4) An "of the land" Druid (Arctic background I think) gets the Haste spell (normally this is a Sorcerer/Wizard thing!). Moon druids (the ones with the better forms) do not. Haste spell is uber. The debuff after being Hasted (which basically incapacitates you) only lasts 1 round. But Haste lasts like 10 rounds, longer than the majority of fights. Druids get crappy cantrips, but are super versatile. Druids also have tons of life pool via forms- if your form goes to 0 life, you just pop back to your original form with whatever life it had, and you can then just pop another form.
    5) Eldritch Knight fighter gets auto-returning thrown weapons. And a bunch of wizard spells which depend on INT if you need them to hit enemies (or just stick with the buffing spells and don't worry about INT). The smart ogre in the goblin camp drops an INT 17 necklace if you kill him that makes your INT 17, though...
    6) Barbarians are more fun in this game than any other game I've played barbs in. "Enraged Throw" is great. And there are a LOT of conversation options and interactions which only show up if you're a Barb, which are hilarious.
    7) 1 level of monk in Shadowheart and she can fight naked. ;)

A funny tip: If you open a door and it starts combat with enemies inside, you can stay in the doorway and at the end of each of your turns, close the door. Once you close it, enemies have to go to the door and open it before attacking. Gives you some times to get a few hits in (Note: mostly for ranged)

So one thing about the cantrip Guidance, it is a concentration spell.
So if the character casting it is concentrating on something different, like a shield spell, you will lose the shield spell and need to cast it again.
Now the shield spell will use a spell slot to cast, so having to recast the spell after every Guidance, will eat up the spell slots pretty fast.

One thing I will say about the conversation dice checks is that failing one can really fuck you over, locking you out of really important side quests with no warning, which feels really really shitty as a player, doesn't help that for most games failing a check means you get nothing which has been ingrained deeply into the genre at this point, giving no incentive beyond RP to not reroll a failed check until it passes for most casual players.

A couple more pro tips, if you are turning undead you might want to put attacks of opportunity to 'ask' in your reactions tab. Same with everything that ends whatever condition you were trying to impose by attacking etc. Secondly, if you have some or all of your characters back to back in the initiative order, you get to pick who goes first. Very important if you want to move someone without provoking attacks who might be ahead visually in the initiative order. If at least two of your guys are back to back, you get to choose.

Another tip I would definitely mention is the fact that if you have multiple characters in the same chunk of initiative (like you have Gale and Shadowheart in this example) you can actually choose to have Shadowheart go first, then Gale. This really comes in handy if you want Shadowheart to do a big AOE like Spirit Guardians, then have Gale clean up with Magic Missile. You can also have both perform their actions first, then move them independently. Can really come in handy when you want the enemy to use their reaction on an attack of opportunity on your tank instead of your squishy Thief. Also, moving a character in to threaten an enemy in melee first to give your Thief advantage for their sneak attack.

Maybe commented on already in here somewhere, but in the attack lineup is if you have a couple or group of your characters connected, you can choose who attacks first (or mix and match). I.E. you have a heavy hitter coming up, but maybe you want to see if a weaker char can take out this enemy to save that big hit for a new/the next enemy, you can select between them, in addition to mixing actions between them - meaning, main action on one char, swap to a linked char to do a bonus action, then swap back, etc.

There is another method to...ahem... "open" a locked chest. You pick it up in your bag, and in the first combat you toss it on an enemy. If you toss it from a high ground it may even break and it will do heavy damage to a small enemy. Then you can pick up the items from the ground later. This way you can use a locked chest as a "weapon" and open it too.

Its likely already been said somewhere in these comments, but in the spirit of take a penny leave a penny. When in combat you will see the order of the players who will act next. Sometimes, your players will be groupwd by a small link icon between their images. This icon means that you can act with these two characters in any order you may wish. So, if the second character in yhe link has a spell you want cast on the first prior to the first acting, then just click on the second character's image first and cast yhe spell. Very helpful when one character is in yhe way of a large AOE attack and they simply need to get out of the way. 👍 Thanks for this video and to everyone for their great tips in the comments. 😀

    - After picking up a chest you can't lockpick, you can often send it to camp, and deal with it there.
    - In outnumbered situations, you can usually force the enemy to move through a chokepoint to get to you. That chokepoint is a great place for persistent AoE spells (e.g. fire wall) that damage them for being in or moving through that area.

You can find Pouches or Backpacks that you can put into your Inventory. For example, I have a Backpack where i have Asterion put all of poisons that I might use on his (or other Companion's) weapons. I have a Pouch for him where I store all of the Jewels. In the arcane tower in the underdark is a chest of mundane. items put into the chest turn into mundane items till taken out. Aka heavy barrels turn into light weight spoons! only downside is it's hard to see what is what so put barrels top side of the chest and other items with a row between. now pick up every explosive barrel that you find!
1 more is the same tower. top level is a stool of giant strength. break it and take the item to give low strength players higher strength for that jump distance!
Ungroup your party when scouting around. if your scout gets into combat the rest will still be hidden and able to move around. use this time to position everyone.
Look at all your spells and look for the text untill long rest. use these spells before combat seeing it will be up 100% of the time. aka mage armor must be cast before combat. don't waste your turns!
Shove is a great move! but don't use it to much if you want your loot! tho sometimes a large fall is enough chasme are 90% chance to lose all loot. ( little mis hag gave me 1500gold while i was tempted to just shove and move on )
Multiclass can be done from level 2. theres a button on the top section row you can click. ( i thought it was from level 6... )
Respeccing is possible! first area after the ship crashes is a temple / dungeon. there is a hidden room! GL finding it:D you can reset all your picks from class to chosen subspecs ect.
You can throw healing items to hit multiple party members. or attack one on the ground for greater aoe range.
you can range attack levers! :D
speak with undead / speak with animals! use it allot and if it's from an item check if it's a cantrip aka unlimited use without resting!
And lastly. without spoilers. check out the hole druid grove place before going on with the main questline. the spell will be cast and do what it's suppose to do! ( something for my second run )

I’m still waiting on the PS5 version but I’m going to completely trust the dice the entire game. No save scumming. I’m sure that’s going to lead to some things I don’t want to happen but I want the most authentic experience.

Already off to a good start with that first tip about holding left click down, I will have to try that out tonight and see how it feels! By now I'd gotten used to clicking where I wanted to go and moving the camera around to survey the area but that may make it feel much smoother when traversing.

For looting, if you hover over a box or whatever, the little treasure chest icon will appear closed if you haven’t checked it and open if you have

To add on to the chest tip, you can send it to your camp instead of lugging it around

On the waypoint fast travel, you can also click on any waypoint shown in the list and teleport to it, even if it's in another region! For so long I thought you could only teleport to waypoints within your current region, so I hauled myself around to get to the other region. Turns out, even though it doesn't change the map you can still click on the waypoint in another region and you'll teleport there. The names are self explanatory if you're paying attention.

Spamming Guidance is something every cleric is familiar with.
I actually compared how the game lets you use Guidance is almost like how one of our DMs let's it be used.
