Portal 1 is highly recommended as a "first video game" to play. It's one of the few video games out there that teach you how to play a video game in a fun and comprehensive way and is also fun in its own right from start to finish. It's also not a super long game, making it much more palatable as a first experience. Not sure if you'll see this comment, but regardless of what you end up playing first, I hope you have fun and can get into gaming! I love watching your reactions!

Portal 1 is really good as a "first video game" because it teaches a lot of the general gaming skills people usually pick up over years of playing games. Like recognizing patterns and prompts in the environment.
A lot of games use tropes that arent really explained but are kind of a "shorthand" that gets picked up through playing a lot of games. And Portal does a good job at pointing out when its introducing a new "trope" and what the "trope" is.

Yes, I recommend it too! Portal 1 is really quite short. Someone who has experience with first person games plays through it in about 3 or 4 hours. So add like 1 or 2 hours learning and it's still just 6 hours maximum. Portal 2 is about 8.5 hours. Still short compared with most games.
Oh and Portal 1 is quite old now I guess. Meaning you don't need a beefy PC to play it! Even Portal 2 is sorta old now. If you recently bought a PC with a somewhat good graphics card your machine should be way more powerful than it needs to be.

It is a puzzle game. In the first game and the single player part of the second you play as Chell, the human women. In the second game there is a 2 player mode that has you do another set of puzzles as the 2 robots, Atlas and P-Body. GLaDos is the creepy Robot voice, she runs the facility at the time you play in it. And Cave Johnson was the founder of Apature Science, the company that GLaDos now runs. Brief explanation about the game: You play as Chell, a test subject for a secret underground laboratory called Aperture Science. The laboratory was founded many years before the events of the games by an entrepreneur called Cave Johnson but the entire facility is now run by an Artificial Intelligence called Glados (she's the creepy robot woman that you can hear speaking in some of the trailers).
Glados puts you (Chell) through a bunch of puzzles and tests, at first they're very easy and safe and Glados even seems somewhat friendly but the test become more and more complicated and deadly until she's basically just trying to kill you. After completing increasingly lethal traps and puzzles you manage to reach the main chamber of the laboratory and you "kill" Glados by shutting her down.
At the very beginning of the second game Glados is woken up once again because of various reasons. It turns out she's not just a very smart computer, she's basically alive and it was very painful for her to be forcibly shut down at the end of the first game. So she's kinda mad (to put it mildly) with you. So yeah, here's some context as to why she calls you a monster in one of the trailers.
The second game's story becomes much, much more complicated after this but I'll stop here because I'm trying to keep this short lol

In Portal, you play as Chelle, the girl in the boots. You're forced to run a gauntlet of increasingly sadistic test rooms using the portal guns, and the sociopathic AI that you hear is the antagonist.
In Portal 2, there are two campaigns. The first is a follow up to the original, where you play Chelle again in a single-player mode. The other is the cooperative two player mode, where you play as one of the two robots.
Cave Johnson only exists in archive recordings, and is absolutely hilarious. The AI is called GlaDOS, and absolutely hates humanity beyond anything else.
There's a lot of gallows humor here, but the games are quite fun if you're into puzzles.

The reason the robot voice (glados) calls you a monster is because this is an advertisement for Portal 2, and you "kill" Glados at the end of the first game, so she calls you a monster for doing so.

Portal is one of the all-time greats as far as video games are concerned. To give a quick summary of the scenario without spoiling things:
Your task is moving through a number of scientific test chambers which are essentially just big old puzzle rooms. There are various switches, buttons, weighted cubes and other functions and items that will allow you to unlock and reach the exit door at the end of each testing chamber. Your goal is to reach and complete the final chamber because there will be cake.
Your main tool is the portal gun, a device that lets you place down two connected portals (one blue, one orange) which allow you to traverse the testing chambers by placing one portal at your own position and one where you want to go. As you progress through the game you find increasingly more applications for your portals which are neccessary to further progress. To give one example: By placing one portal on the ceiling and the other on the ground directly below, you can enter an infinite falling loop in order to build up momentum. If you then move the ceiling portal from the ceiling to an angled or horizontal surface whilst still falling, you can launch yourself across the room to get past obstacles.
Whilst you play through the game, your actions are commented on by GlaDOS, an artificial Intelligence who is the one behind the robot voice narrating the trailer. She's absolutely hilarious.
There is also Portal 2, which is by all definitions a worthy and beloved sequel. A lot of the gameplay stays the same with some new additions, though I cannot really comment on the writing or plot because that's all spoilers for the first game. It does however come with the addition of a 2 player co-op mode in which you and another player take control of two little robots rather than the human test subject (a woman named Chel) you play in the main story.

    To answer a few questions.
There's two portal games: Portal 1 and Portal 2. In the first game, you play as a lady called Chell, a human lady to be precise. it's the girl you see walking around as well as the one who used the high fall boots.
In the second game, there's two campaigns (I.E two different stories) to play. In one of them, you play by yourself and complete the game alone. Going through the story and the characters to see where the game takes you. Here you play as Chell once again.
Then there's a co-op story to play through, where you play with your friend (or a random stranger) as the two robots you saw.
So you are quite correct with the fact that you play as both the robots, as well as the girl.
As for Portal being a "First game to play". It's very beginner friendly. Some people might even say that Portal 1 is just a tutorial for Portal 2. Portal 1 is also quite short when it comes to how long it takes you to play it, as it can be completed in like 2 hours (totally depending on how well one plays of course).

Just searching "Portal Trailer" on UA-cam brought up the much more explanatory Teaser Trailer. On the other hand, you DID experience _why_ people love Portal: the writing. Hey Hannah! awesome videos, I've been binging on your videos for the last couple of hours. your fascination and energy towards video games are just downright contagious and fun to watch. Portal and Portal 2 are both first person puzzle games in which the protagonist (Chell) is a human who wakes up in an abandoned Apature science facility, Chell just wants to escape and her freedom but the antagonist (GlaDos) is a robot who has taken control over the facility and wants nothing more than to just run "tests" and give you more puzzles. The series is usually filled with clever dialogue and snarky remarks from antagonist which can be quite funny at times. the game is usually recommended to newer players because the learning curve for gaming controls and movements are quite simple but gradually get more challenging as the levels progress, this can be very helpful because there are plenty of video games in which the producers assumes that the player has plenty of experience in playing video games. I hope that shed more light on the subject, love the videos :)

In both games, you use the portal gun to navigate test chambers and complete puzzles. It can get pretty tricky at times, but I think Portal 1 is a great way to learn the conventions of FPS games, and if you complete it, it will probably explain the robot lady's attitude. Portal 1 only has Single-Player mode, but Portal 2 has Single-Player and Multiplayer Co-op. You're the robots in Co-op mode, but you're the woman with the boots in Single-Player mode. There is also a mode where you can build your own test chambers and play chambers made by other players.

Thinking with portals is the philosophy of this game. Use physics and portals together to escape the test chamber. Basically a bunch of escape rooms in one giant escape room, and you must solve the puzzles with portals and anything else at your disposal to reach the exit. Really fun game, I’ve been replaying portal 2 and it’s still as much fun as it was when it first came out.

I'm terrible at games, and Portal and Portal 2 are my "comfort food." You basically saw trailer for three different games there. You have a single player mode, where you play "Chell" a human. Then there is the cooperative mode where you play as one of the robots while another person plays the others. Then there is the design portion where you can create your own puzzles and upload them for other people to play.
Portal lasts about 2-3 hours for most people and literally half the game is a tutorial on how to play it, but it doesn't feel like it. You solve puzzles and it eases you in to each new concept. Once you know the basics, the game changes and you use everything you've just learned to get to the end.
Portal 2 picks up with the same character after "some" time has passed. It's a much longer game and it has a similar tutorial stage to it, but it also has a story-line and character development. And the voice talents of J.K. Simmons and Stephen Merchant. Some of the dialog in Portal 2 is hilarious. It's a master class in passive aggression.

It's basically a puzzle game and it's hilarious yet ominous at the same time, you basically play as female human, and she's being tested on by a robot called GLaDOS (the mean lady you referred to), and you need to pass many test chambers and they get more difficult as you progress through, and that companion cube that you use in your missions (the one with a heart symbol on it) has a dead human being inside of it, the one that failed the test before you. Portal COOP you play as two robots, with your friend and you try to solve harder puzzles because they're made for 2 players, unlike Portal 1 and 2 where it's just a single player game.

  • @HexJK
    @HexJK 2 роки тому

In co-op mode, you and a friend play as the robots. In single player mode, you play as Chell, a female test subject. The content of the game is essentially solving puzzles using portal logic, and it's accompanied by a narrative that takes place in the Half Life universe. GLaDOS is the psychotic AI that you hear in most of the trailers, and she runs the facility. Her motives and the purpose of your "tests" would be a spoiler.
Portal would actually be a very good game to start with, because it'll let you learn basic controls and movement in a pretty casual environment (which will translate to all first person perspective games). The puzzles also require you to figure out where you need to go, and how you're going to get there (which are also extremely important skills to have in any game).

Ok, so explanations of what you've witnessed.
    1. The first Portal had no advertisements. It was a small mod of the game Half-Life and included with that game in a package called "The Orange Box." Unprecedently, though, Portal gained a massive fanbase. A few years after release, it became free on Steam, hence the first trailer you watched.
    2. The first trailer you saw for Portal 2 was the only real look at the main story of the game. I know you're not gonna be able to piece together what it's about, and that's ok. It's actually a sequel to the first game and would be spoilers, anyway. That said, good on them for not spoiling anything in their trailer.
    3. The trailers for Turrets, Panels, and Boots were made to not only advertise the game, but also "explain" some of the game mechanics, such as turrets never running out of bullets and the fact that you will ALWAYS land on your feet when playing. Also, yes that is JK Simmons, he does play Cave Johnson in the game, and the writing in both games is hilarious; I've never laughed more at being insulted.
    4. The Robots you saw, Atlas and P-Body, are the two you get to play as in Portal 2's Coop Mode. New to sequel, Coop allowed two players to work together with their combined total of 4 portals to try and solve puzzles. Two people working together in the tests was going to result in failures, and they didn't want you both to have to restart the whole map every time when one of your characters died, so they made the characters robots that could be rebuilt on the spot instead of humans.
    5. The multiverse trailer came out after the game and was an advertisement for the PC version, showing the ability to create user-submitted test chambers (the puzzle-based rooms you're trying to make it through in the game), which is still a functioning feature to this day.
    6. The last trailer you watched was recent, showing that both Portal 1 and 2 were being brought to Switch, their first time on a Nintendo console.
So yeah, you play as a human woman in the first game and the single-player mode of the 2nd, you play as two robots in the 2nd game's two-player mode, and you can make your own test chambers in the PC version. I agree with what someone else said; the first game would be a great first game to play, as it does a very excellent job about teaching you as you go, and it's a shorter game, taking anywhere from 2-4 hours for a newcomer to get through.

Portal has so well written dialogues, no other game made me laugh out loud so often. Apart from that the game itself is actual fun and quite clever. You need to get to the exit of the test rooms with the help of the stuff in the room and your "Portal Gun" - with it you can "shoot" two openings onto walls, the ceiling and the floor and then walk or jump through them from one to the other. So, for example, you can shoot one onto a wall above a ledge you can't reach any way else and one onto the floor - and when you jump into the hole in the floor you'll exit out of the one high up on the wall.

Portal 1 is probably a lot more accessible than Portal 2, which is what most of these trailers were about. These games are actually pretty good games to learn how to play FPS games. The structure of the levels are built up in such a way that the entire game is one big tutorial. You learn a new skill per level and then eventually you get levels that require multiple of the skills you've just learned at the same time.
Also just to mention it. These games have no horror elements, so they aren't scary in any way. It's just puzzle games with an excellent story and some good humor.

Most of these trailers are for Portal 2, and make more sense if you've already played Portal. They introduce new features like the two-player co-op, which is the thing with the robots (it's a whole separate story from the one player mode, with different levels and everything, basically a whole extra game within the game), and the "perpetual testing initiative", which is the mode where people can make their own levels.
The main (single-player) game is where you're playing as the human test subject Chell, trying to get through (and perhaps out of) the Aperture Science facility, while being bullied by GlaDOS the passive-aggressive malfunctioning computer that runs the place. The game is very much its own tutorial. You learn how to play it piece by piece as you go through the tests, which gradually introduce new elements. It's not as daunting as it seems from these trailers, since these are for the second game and assume you're already familiar with the basics.

It's been explained already but you are a test subject and need to pass tests (or puzzles) designed for the portal device. So it's you, the portal device and a robotic voice guiding you through the tests (the lovely robot lady voice from the trailers)
It's a fantastic game, and teaches you how to play in an excellent way, there's no tutorial but they introduce one mechanic at a time and when you master it, they add another and at the end you will have to combine all you have learned to advance.

Yes that is the same Valve that made Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead, Dota 2, Half Life, Counterstrike, and Day of Defeat! Portal takes place in the same universe as Half Life. Aperture Science is a rival company to Black Mesa, who developed the gravity gun featured in Half Life. They come up with the portal gun as a competitor.
You play a human guinea pig meant to test the capabilities of the portal gun. Unfortunately, Aperture Science is overrun by a rogue AI named Glados, the creepy robot voice who taunts you. She goes full AM from "I Have No Mouth and I must Scream" on all the humans she encounters, which involves tormenting you through a series of puzzles and tests after she killed everyone else.

Portal is such an excellent game. It's actually been a subject of study as a piece of feminist literature; the relationship between GLaDOS and Chell in particular has a lot to say about the relationship between mothers and their daughters, and the hidden spaces that women have to live in within a patriarchal world. The contortions and pains and difficulties, and just so much. It's got endless depth. And the gameplay is smooth as butter, and really rewarding. It's a puzzle game, but it's so much more too. Really encourage you to give it a go!

GLaDOS is just an AI that went rouge and poor Chell was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Right??? hehe... not! They are both survivors, that's for sure! But, seriously, since their backstories are out, it's good to know that neither one of them realizes the relationship through all of Portal, and (if I'm not mistaken) 90ish percent of Portal 2. In fact, I don't think the relationship is ever spelled out to either GLaDOS or Chell throughout the entire series. Portal/Portal 2 are games that have a lot of messaging under the surface that people casually playing don't tend to notice.
Don't forget Ratman. Where does he fit into all of this? And Cave Johnson (yes, that is J.K. Simmons en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._K._Simmons). Cave has a very interesting relationship with... no spoiler!

Portal 1 is a short puzzler that introduces GLaDOS - the female voice you were hearing... Lots of lore to her and to Cave Johnson and his Aperture Science labs. You play as Chell, a human test subject who uses the portals and portal gun to get to the exits of the test chambers, and eventually take on GLaDOS. Portal 2 sees you back as Chell, but with a few other characters involved and a much deeper storyline and lore to how GLaDOS came to be, and the rise and fall of Cave Johnson and Aperture. Portal 2 is amazing. The two robots, P-Body and Atlas are the characters you play if you're doing the Co-op version to play with a friend in multiplayer. You should definitely play these games if you get a chance. As old as they are, they're still brilliant.

The best game to start gaming with is one you can play with friends. They can help explain and demonstrate how the game works so you don't spend your entire time playing trying to figure out the basic functions. I'd actually suggest starting with something simple from Nintendo, like MarioKart, or any number of Nintendo Wii Sports games like bowling or tennis. I've played on the Nintendo Wii with my technophobic grandmother without an issue, provided we played something she had played in real life, like tennis. Then all we had to do was explain what character she was controlling, the basic controls and let her play. We obviously had to set up the matches for her, but the gameplay itself is simple enough that only the most basic explanation is required to allow a new player to have a go. The entire family had a great time.

It’s actually pretty decent as an intro to first person shooters. It’s pretty much just puzzle problem solving without being forced to go at the games pace. A lot of fps games either expect a certain amount of skill from the player or have you going against real people so portal just being a go at your own pace puzzle game is really good. Also portal 1 and 2 follows Chell a human solving puzzles as you try and escape Glados a 2001 space oddysey-esque robot who was originally for testing that became more sinister. The two robots are from the co-op campaign exclusive to 2 where you and one other person work together to solve puzzles set after portal 2s main story. Honestly as a first game I’d seriously recommend it since there isn’t anything that’s too difficult to understand easily like in other games

There needs to be alot more context than what's given here. You've got the gameplay concept down, but the story is important too.
The basics of Portal 1 is that, the outside world has pretty much ended, you play as a mute woman(Chell) who woke up in this science institute run by an insane AI lady(GLaDOS). The people who ran the institute has all perished, so Glados just kept continuing the last human command(which was to test science, lots of science, in complete disregard of human life)
You, the player, had no choice but to cooperate with Glados as her test subject, progressing through all the insane test chambers shown in the trailer one by one, until you manage to outsmart Glados in the end and "kill" her, but you get knocked out in the chaos and was ultimately dragged back inside(Glados survived). That was the ending of Portal 1.
Portal 2 basically had more of the same, except you get more dialogue and backstory into who originally built the company(Cave Johnson, as you've heard in the trailers, voiced by J. K. Simmons.) and how Glados came to be. And you ultimately do manage to escape for real in the end. (Glados lets you go becuase you're more trouble to her than you're worth, but she also survives)
The 2 robots are for multiplayer. My understanding is basically that once Chell escaped(or let go) in the end, Glados continues to test, but this time using robots so they can't rebel like Chell did.

It's a puzzle game where you try to get through test chambers with various obstacles. The core game mechanic is the Portal Gun, a device that can place a blue and an orange portal on most surfaces within line of sight. The blue and the orange portal are connected. If you go through one or throw something into it, you or the thing come out of the other one. You can also see through them as if they were windows or holes in the wall, which is really trippy at first. It's a really cool experience because you face challenges that would be impossible to overcome in reality or even in most games, which makes solving the puzzles feel very rewarding.
At its core, the game is all about logic but contrary to some similar games, it has excellent storytelling (especially the second game) and appeals not just to puzzle nerds.
In the main story, you play as Chell, the woman in the "Boots" trailer. The two robots are the protagonists of the cooperative multiplayer mode. Because having two Portal Guns completely changes the game, it's an entirely separate story with different puzzles that can only be solved by working together.
Building your own test chambers and sharing them with others is a feature that was added later to keep the game interesting after completing the main story.
