Personally I like drawing anime with my own little touch. I hate it when people say that anime is unoriginal and you should avoid drawing it! I can do whatever I want bish.

      @@VOKZEL "No form of art is concrete" This is true, with a massive caveat. I think what people have a problem with is how art fundamentals are more or less concrete, and an artists ignorance on the topic, whether intentional or not, is what annoys people. I'm not going to look at someone's shit drawing of an anime character and say, "I'll let that pass, because it's obvious they are trying", spoiler alert, drawing anime usually means that A. you lack fundamentals, B. you aren't even trying, C. you might be an indulgent degenerate.
      It's fine to be indulgent, like with my anime example, but when someone calls you out on it, the last thing you should say is, "it's my art style!", because it most likely isn't. I should know, I used to be one of those kids who drew anime, and that time spent drawing anime proved to be detrimental to my development as an artist in the long run.

    As someone who's art style has gone from (very anime), to realistic, to (heavily inspired by another artist), to cartoonish and back again I think putting too much pressure on one's art style and trying to make it stay consistant and recognizable can stagnate growth as an artist. Never feel afraid to challenge yourself and try new things.

      Yes the basics are important. I had an art teacher who once we finished learning the basics of anatomy and completed our assignments would let us work in any different style or art medium. She even let me submit work digitally or traditionally. I even learned a bit about animation in her class. Other students didn't bother trying anything at all and either failed or had horrible grades despite her being one of the few teachers I had who marked assignments based on how much effort the student put forth instead of what style or medium they used as an artist.

      @KUYAMIN 6 років тому +5

      yeah, i agree! i've always had an anime art style but lately i've been doing more (western) cartoonish and also a bit of realism. i also think it's important not to confine yourself or any artist to just one style! you can do things with one style that you couldn't do with the other, and part of being an artist in my opinion is expressing yourself and/or your ideas in whatever way you want!

    • @grimrose999
      @grimrose999 6 років тому +4

      It's also okay to use a different style when using different mediums. I always use a different style when animating compared to digital art or traditional art. Sometimes you may have to alter your style to fit the situation. (or your client's vision, if you are doing art commissions)

    An art style is an abstraction of realism. The saying "You have to know the rules before you can break them" applies here. Your style is defined by the details you focus on, and the details you choose to leave out, all in order to get your desired effect. Every cartoon creator and popular artist has learned realism at one point, because that's how you learn the fundamentals of art.

      @@HYPERxSONICxFANx2012 That isn't exactly to say you haven't picked up on realism. Body proportions are learnt through proper referencing even if not noticed at first. You brain realizes how the body is shaped and structured through repeated practice and efforts. Even if you claim that you can't achieve realism, you are slowly but surely incorporating it in your art, though simply modifying to fit your style. Most anime artists start off with wonky proportions and lackluster body shape, but as they reference the appearance of the body, they learn to modify the actual appearance of the body to fit the style without looking distorted. It's one of the simple ways to tell a good artist from a lackluster one.

One time I said this to a person "Hey this is really well made but in one part of the drawing I can't really see the line-art. I recomend having a darker colour so it fits the rest of the line-art since that's darker." their reply was "It's just my style" then later they decided to delete my comment and their own comment. This was a person I looked up to and who started my style, to get that comment from that person made me looose respect for them. Trust me, if you spend enough time drawing, it’ll begin to look unique on its own.

      Kibitzer ah sorry for not making things clear^^ of course i meant not to steal other people's artwork and claim it as your own, but also - copying art and/or styles may be beneficial to the artist, but only to a certain extent. every single artist is still improving, no matter how good they are, and if you choose someone who's still in the learning process then you'll most probably make the same mistakes they do. i think learning from real life things is better ^^ of course, i can't say it's easier, but it certainly helps you notice the mistakes faster.

      I used to trace coloring books pages when I was in first grade cause I liked the art, but I did that twice. I then started to *really* get into art when I was in third grade. I practiced nearly everyday, and looked up UA-cam tutorials, and I started getting better. I would look up cute pictures on Google. My current art style is a mixture of semi-realism and anime. I'm proud that I can say that I'm self taught, and even prouder that I stuck to something so complicated. Even with all of that I'm still learning and practicing. Of course I don't like my art style much, but I'm working to improve it! 🤓

    Two ways to get an artstyle:
    1. Blood sacrifice your mom and open up the key inside your soul for your own artstyle to come out
    2. Steal someone else's and soon it will morph into your own

    For everyone who draws in the Powerpuff Girl art style, that’s perfectly fine, but the big eyes and fingerless hands are not actually stylistic choice. The Powerpuff Girls actually look like that compared to normal humans because of how they were made in the guy’s basement.

    I loved your points on art styles.
    I do think that a lot of entitled artists think that mistakes in their art is just their art style which is just an excuse unless it was intentionally done that way.
    I think artists nowadays are more entitled and stuck up when it comes to art styles and their art in general because a lot of them deem actual constructive criticism as a personal attack (I've had this happen to me once with a popular artist on Instagram not too long ago and two of her fans and boyfriend were awfully rude to me over it. She lost a fan that day). And I'm not saying all artists are like this but a lot of them are and I think artists need more thick skin and be more professional over their work than be overly sensitive about it.

    what i don't like is this one artstyle hovering around, mostly teenagers between 12-15 years old who all mysteriously question their sexuality adapted it, who are part of some fandom (most of the time musicals). You know the one I'm talking about. "Thiccness", sometimes big lips, roundness of the entire body, big eyes and weirdly overpresentated eroticness or depression.

    • @mayaa7256
      @mayaa7256 6 років тому +30

      evesning I mean im not an amazing artist, and I still have a long ways to go with anatomy, but take it from somebody who fits within that age spectrum. More rounded characters are easier to draw, skinnier characters require better knowledge of the bone structure. Of course there needs to be decent knowledge on both end, but "thiccer" characters have a lot of, well "thiccness" around the bones. It can be more curvy, less defined. : )

    • @Koioi

      Pretty sure that particular style came from Steven Universe, since it's the 'progressive' in-thing right now for teenagers and the cartoony style's very easy to copy. American children's cartoons are also popular to watch now in some circles and most of them feature very exaggerated eye sizes.
      Teenagers are teenagers, so they'll of course draw some really lewd stuff. It's also somehow become popular to project one's emotions onto characters and draw them with self-harm scars or crying and the like, or to joke about not caring about anything in life.

    pretty much my thoughts
    -artstyles can't be "copywritten" and as long as the art is not TRACED, who cares if they look similar
    -it's okay to draw anime-chibi-etc, as long as you actually TRY to learn anatomy, otherwise it's going to look like shit. cute maybe, but still have that shitty, childish laziness to the body
    -don't use "art style" as an excuse to not listen to critique/learn/improve
    -people are allowed to experiment and use other styles they may enjoy

    Some of the biggest leaps I took in my personal style were usually born out of re-investigating the elements of design. I would look at art from artists long-dead and would churn out stuff completely different from their's but sometimes I would utilize a color theory or shape consistency from pieces I enjoyed. I got pieces that got me A's and that I was proud of. My worst work is usually work rushed within a day or two after browsing a couple Google image searches. Maybe this doesn't work for everyone, but I found tremendous benefit in studying from a group of artists from different time periods and regions.

  • @MelindaGreen13
    @MelindaGreen13 6 років тому

    I have to agree. And I want to add some advice: As @ange. in the comments said: art styles come naturally. If you're a beginner, the first thing you should do is sit down, draw something. Anything will do: a human, an animal, etc. Just make sure it has eyes, and it's something you're comfortable staring at for a while. Which brings me to the second step: look at it and wonder what you think is nice about it, and what's not. Keep the nice parts, and improve the not so nice parts by finding tutorials and just trying stuff out. That's how I sort of found my style. I know I sound like some stuffy art teacher pulling artsy-sounding words out of their ass, but please hear me out.
    I found my style by looking at my biggest influences in life. just took some stuff from anime, took some stuff from western cartoons, and just tossed 'em together. The anime because I just drew eyes too big over and over, and it got me through some dark times as a teen. So naturally, I was inclined to copy it. Cartoon elements because I was regularly plopped in front of a tv with cartoons on it at some point in my childhood. My grandma was terminally ill at that point, and my parents needed at least some time to come up with a child-friendly answer to my questions, but one that didn't dance around the issue. I was a tiny little question canon back then, okay? xD Anyhow, both of these had a big influence in my life, and that's partially why they still influence my art style today. My point with this is: don't underestimate life experiences as having a part in your art style.
    So, to keep this thing from turning into an essay, let's skip to the conclusion. Just take your art journey, and see where that roller coaster takes you. And for the love of all that is holy, DON'T TRACE AND/OR STEAL ART.
