That’s exactly what I was thinking. Most of the time it’s already assumed. I’m an actress and writer so I often have to pull together character analysis and it’s like a lot of people bring up a lot of the same things that are already universally assumed. Like of course you’re going to like your friends.. they’re your friends for god sakes.
Likes: Food, friends, affection, sleeping, exploring, nature Dislikes: Spiders, hate, rudeness, Homophobia, bullying, people, school I see this shit all the time.

If you're drawing on a phone in an app that limits you to just three layers and two paint brushes, I very much recommend you try ibisPaintX, its like a professional digital art program that costs nothing. A lot of brushes, unlimited layers, opacity layer, custom canvas size (you can even make a twitter header), blending, patterns etc. There's a lot of good stuff which is only for premium accounts, but if you watch a video you can unlock all premium features for 18 hours. However, if your device can't handle ibisPaintX (which I highly doubt it wouldn't, ibisPaintX doesn't weigh that much as an app) I also recommed Sony Sketch. Less paint brushes than ibisPaint, but still much more than just two, unlimited layers, recording option, an account to share your artworks, collaboration option, export option, trending, featured and popular page, etc. I have both of these but I mainly use ibisPaint for drawing, I usually use Sony Sketch to share my artworks with other users.

Some tips for making an OC personality: what does the character want to achieve? what does the character look for in a friend/partner? what does the character want everyone else to think of them? do they not care? what kind of people does this character get along well with? how do they act when losing a loved one? what is the character willing to do for someone else? how do they act around strangers? around friends? family members? i see many ocs that lack the qualities of real people. try using these to help write an oc!
Advice for writing characters: Describe them in paragraphs, its called writing for a reason. You have to go into detail about how they act and why. Think you're writing about someone you know, you wouldn't just describe them in a couple words. Keep it a bit short don’t drag it out too long. Give a list of words that are mentioned. Don’t use primary emotions like happy, joyous, and cherry use more in depth words that give more specification.
Also add more to the likes and dislikes, Likes: friends, happiness, cool things Dislikes: bullies, being sad, evil I’m sorry but, that doesn’t really say much- don’t we all have those traits?

We should remember that he is rating them more on the detail or background info on the character , as well as maybe some small details. It’s not mainly because of how the oc looks. Honestly I think I'm too old. Most of these designs feel very juvenile or edgy, and the general OC culture feels so showboaty. It's so far detached from anything that I've created as a concept artist and designer, that I feel much of this community is either just throwing in random features and abilities as flavour text or to gloat about how awesome they are after the fact. I get that deviantart holds very specific communities, some of which enjoy roleplaying. So I find a lot of OCs just act as self inserts for whatever scenario tickles the creator. Nothing really wrong with that, but as soon as you design for someone other than yourself, you'll find randomly throwing things around in a flurry of mental masturbation won't get you very far: You need to couple it with visual development. Letting the design speak for their personality is key to creating compelling and believable characters, not a slab of flavour text. Out of this bunch though, I felt the Forest Witch achieved this the best and I'm sure they'll carve a path.
Okay but for the Goddess of Life one, if she's like all about plants/life, why does she need the halfvhalf design and is named after like the duality or whatever. It doesn't fit. The design still looks fine/is cool if we interpret it as sun and water, which is two of the key elements of life and plants. But the artist doesn't say that, so they can't get that credit.

Personally I like bullet-point-style summaries and lists of "likes." They help a lot when you're trying to draw someone's OC, you need inspiration for a scenario, and you don't wanna reread a WHOLE story/bio over and over just to pick out a detail or two. *HOWEVER, if any of you want a tip...* *PLEASE save the bullet points for KEY DETAILS!* A trend I'm noticing in ref-sheets is that people list a bunch of likes/dislikes for the sake of listing... stuff. Just random generic stuff that literally applies to everyone. It's kinda pointless to list things like: "-mean people -annoying sounds -bad music -cruelty" This is stuff EVERYONE hates. It doesn't really teach us anything about the CHARACTER'S traits. Try thinking about it like this: Does your OC like candy in the casual "everyone likes candy!" way? Is their Arachnophobia just a common quirk? Then it probably isn't summary-worthy. Are those things ACTUALLY important to your OC's theme/story? Do you want artists to notice these details above all else, and use them in their drawings? Then yeah! go for it Just keep in mind the purpose of those bullet-points are to summarize/define your character! Random whatever-info can be cluttery, and confuse people over what is/isn't important.

Duality of ambivalence is two contrasting emotions mixing, as in the happiness and sadness displayed by yellow and blue, they mix in the middle where they meet, it does connect to the character design rather a lot.
I think ambivalence is more along the lines of a person going one way or the other on a thing. So the duality of ambivalence could be referring to the fact that you can go one way, or the total opposite. The chick in the artwork seemed to have two sides to her as well (yellow parts and light blue parts that almost split her in half) so this makes sense.

I've noticed that alot of this OCs descriptions are very superfluous and don't really add anything to the character itself. Like, a character should "show" bits of their personality just by you looking at their design not by a spreadsheet. (That 1st OC could clearly stand on it's own without the description for example) Ps: after writing this I realized I'm fucking overthinking deviant art oc`s LuL but still, some of those artists might want to be character designers and those long descriptions won't do them any good

When you crituqe other peoples work, and analyze it I use that criticism to reflect on my own work and point out any faults. Your vids help my art get better. Duality of Ambivalence, I’m guessing, means that there’s a duality (or, rather, attempted duality) of “contrasting” colors and aspects of her behavior (hence the ambivalence bit). Even in her abilities, parts are directly contradicting each other, but she’s still somehow one person. I think it’s a lot like what you said about different ideas in one body - I think the theme is supposed to be the fact that it’s two entirely different designs (including personality, abilities, etc.) of one or more people forced to be in one body.

Okay, so I see that a lot of people in the comment section are talking about the lower rating of Babaroga and how she apparently deserves more because of her design and the artists good art. We should remember that he is rating them more on the detail or background info on the character , as well as maybe some small details. It’s not mainly because of how the oc looks. The creator of Babaroga even made a comment saying that they added more info in their journal then what they added in the picture. People who are reading this might be confused and think that I keep jumping from different points. Sorry for the bad explanation but I hope you are able to get what I am trying to say. ✌🏼

God. they’ve improved so much, their art is so cool and interesting, I really love how they use uncanny/unsettling things in their art sometimes, it just has such an insanely cool feel to it and it’s just lovely. I really suggest looking at their account now because it’s just??? Stunning???
It's fascinating how great creative artists can absolutely suck at writing even a moderately interesting backstory for a character.
Honestly I think I'm too old.
Most of these designs feel very juvenile or edgy, and the general OC culture feels so showboaty. It's so far detached from anything that I've created as a concept artist and designer, that I feel much of this community is either just throwing in random features and abilities as flavour text or to gloat about how awesome they are after the fact. I get that deviantart holds very specific communities, some of which enjoy roleplaying. So I find a lot of OCs just act as self inserts for whatever scenario tickles the creator. Nothing really wrong with that, but as soon as you design for someone other than yourself, you'll find randomly throwing things around in a flurry of mental masturbation won't get you very far: You need to couple it with visual development. Letting the design speak for their personality is key to creating compelling and believable characters, not a slab of flavour text. Out of this bunch though, I felt the Forest Witch achieved this the best and I'm sure they'll carve a path.

Okay but for the Goddess of Life one, if she's like all about plants/life, why does she need the halfvhalf design and is named after like the duality or whatever. It doesn't fit. The design still looks fine/is cool if we interpret it as sun and water, which is two of the key elements of life and plants. But the artist doesn't say that, so they can't get that credit.
5:27 babaroga is essencially a kids story about how you shouldnt go out in the woods at night or a witch will eat you, i think the artist just wants to make a design that looks strikingly horrifying
Personally I like bullet-point-style summaries and lists of "likes."
They help a lot when you're trying to draw someone's OC, you need inspiration for a scenario, and you don't wanna reread a WHOLE story/bio over and over just to pick out a detail or two.

A trend I'm noticing in ref-sheets is that people list a bunch of likes/dislikes for the sake of listing... stuff. Just random generic stuff that literally applies to everyone.
It's kinda pointless to list things like: "-mean people -annoying sounds -bad music -cruelty" This is stuff EVERYONE hates. It doesn't really teach us anything about the CHARACTER'S traits.
Try thinking about it like this:
Does your OC like candy in the casual "everyone likes candy!" way? Is their Arachnophobia just a common quirk?
Then it probably isn't summary-worthy.
Are those things ACTUALLY important to your OC's theme/story? Do you want artists to notice these details above all else, and use them in their drawings?
Then yeah! go for it
Just keep in mind the purpose of those bullet-points are to summarize/define your character!
Random whatever-info can be cluttery, and confuse people over what is/isn't important.

Well considering majority of deviantart furries aren't that great at making oc's without having to make the oc's only "good" quality their sexuality or making the likes and dislikes generic

It's a repeating factor that many creators have in order to make their character seem unique and quirky

Duality of ambivalence is two contrasting emotions mixing, as in the happiness and sadness displayed by yellow and blue, they mix in the middle where they meet, it does connect to the character design rather a lot.

I think ambivalence is more along the lines of a person going one way or the other on a thing. So the duality of ambivalence could be referring to the fact that you can go one way, or the total opposite. The chick in the artwork seemed to have two sides to her as well (yellow parts and light blue parts that almost split her in half) so this makes sense.

I've noticed that alot of this OCs descriptions are very superfluous and don't really add anything to the character itself. Like, a character should "show" bits of their personality just by you looking at their design not by a spreadsheet. (That 1st OC could clearly stand on it's own without the description for example)
Ps: after writing this I realized I'm fucking overthinking deviant art oc`s LuL but still, some of those artists might want to be character designers and those long descriptions won't do them any good

Whenever I watch your vids it just makes me want to draw more, its because you give constructive criticism. When you crituqe other peoples work, and analyze it I use that criticism to reflect on my own work and point out any faults. Your vids help my art get better.
