I've got the feeling that some artists love the word "steal" a bit too much.
Oh definitely, "omg does your oc breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide?! My oc does it too! How dare you steal my art you CoWaRd aRt STeALer!1!1!1!1!" Lol sorry I dunno what happened to me hehe-
some artists are soooooooo weird around the word "unique"
idk they get all depressed when they have similar artstyle w/ someone else. they get all angry when someone steals theirs
no one is going to be soooooo special and unique this time around when we all get inspired and and shit
idk just a pet peeve. i hate that we have to be all special lil snowflakes to be known as an artist

Accusing someone of stealing an art style is like accusing someone of stealing a genre of music.
@Marta Wroblewska A design is different from an art style. A style is the WAY you design things, not the actual design. Plagiarism is different from using similar techniques, your example makes it seem like you're talking about stealing pre-made artwork or said artwork was just traced. If someone were to draw a dog doing some dance and someone draws with a similar artstyle and made a dog eating biscuits, it doesn't mean they copied the artwork it means they used similar techniques to create a similar vibe found in the artstyle
Idk what these people at the top are saying but ikr
SomeGeek_UwU they are writing paragraphs ;w;
Even if someone claims they made a completely original style that's just an inspiration of all the other styles, they didn't steal it. They just come off as arrogant.

When I was younger I got mercilessly bullied online for ”stealing an artstyle” from one of my online idols and I was devastated. It really hurt my motivation to make art and I stopped sharing my art and almost stopped drawing altogether. This stuff shouldn't happen to anyone and some artists on the internet really need to get over themselves
Really dude? Cmon dont let people on the Internet control u.
Dont listen to them bud, i got called out back then as well for using a milk carton as a reference
This is why as inspired artist, we all need to stick together, help each other, support each other, and defend each other from stuff like that. I 100% agree with you.

@@cressychess2622 Honestly, nobody *owns* an art style or pose. You aren't entitled to being the only person to draw something. I can admit, I get ticked off when one of my friends uses a drawing idea I originally came up with, and passes it off as their own. Kinda hurts. Nobody has a right to say "it's MY art style! No stealing!" As long as you don't trace or try to pass the art as your own, then it's all good.

Art styles are way overrated. Yes, you develop your own way of drawing, and yes it's a nice feeling when people recognize your art, but that isn't what is most important. Only focusing on having a style is way too limiting. If you just focus on the skills, your are more likely to enjoy doing art. Isn't that the most important part?
Let me clarify something. I don't mean that you can't develop a style, but it shouldn't be the only thing you do.
🙏 P R E A C H 🙏
no if you don't have a art style then you basically have no point in drawing.

Every artist is a thief. Every single one. Me and you. And that jerk who's mercilessly blasting people for "stealing an art style." Why? Because we see things we like in other art/styles think "ooh a shiny" and incorporate it into our style. Even if we somehow never look at another style we still just copy what we see (like birds, and the shape of trees etc.) So to that jerk who's shaming people for "stealing a style" he can go shut up.
I can confirm. I'm an artist and a thief.
I just stole an entire bank
There’s a difference between copying and stealing, and being inspired those aren’t the same thing
Fuck I need to call the police
@@polocatfan how are they the same thing?
After thousands and thousands of years of different art forms, no one can create anything that is 100% original, everything has inspiration behind it and, so nothing is original, but that’s just how it is. You drew inspiration from someone’s art just like how someone will eventually be inspired by your art, and that’s the cool part about it lol. That’s what I think
So, people actually think you can "steal" a style? That's weird. I mean, the masters from the renaissance all drew, painted, and sculpted in almost the exact same way. If you look through history the majority of art looks exactly the same within their respective eras and regions. Why are people so stupid?
The real question is
*Why did “Artstyle theft” even surface in the **_fIrsT pLacE_*
WELCOME TO HUMANITY
I don’t see how people think that stealing art styles is actually something they should be reporting about it or bitching about it
Captain Girly Gamer ppl thinks they are stealing money by doing so (for real)
They are bored, so this is what they get off on.
There is an artist named phobia circus who was bullied into going private because people were harassing her because her art is similar to Vivzie Pop’s.
Ironically, the majority of people (that I've encountered) who think stealing an art style is possible are mostly beginners themselves and don't know shit about styles, anatomy or realism (which is, the basis of literally everything)
And, if going by this logic then no person would improve in art ever. Copying actually helps you improve your art a lot.
I quite agree with this. I got better with my art by taking bits and pieces from other peoples art
Tbh we cant learn without copying others , even the realest art piece are copied from real life
I've been trying to replicate the JoJo artstyle, and it's helped me improve so much very fast.
Again, I’ve said this before.
Art style theft doesn’t exist
Tracing is completely different
And every style is different in its own way.
Spirit preach
Spirit This is rather off topic, but tracing is okay, sometimes. I had my 7-8 year old students trace body parts out of a book to learn anatomy. At least 70% of them got better at drawing bodies. I find it a useful learning tool, but nothing more than that.
everybody has their own style but, its no just what you wan't at the time.
Wine Without, Yeah tracing when it comes to learning is pretty great! I used to trace as a kid too.
Sam L Same here. Espically for really young kids. It helps them develope motor skills in their hands since the point of tracing is to make it as precise as possible.

If you can steal art styles then people who do realism are stealing God’s art style
An artist that I know of is called SaltyMilk. She gets upset whenever someone says "Oh your art style reminds me of [insert other artist]".She feels as like she has worked on her art style for so long that she gets mad whenever someone doesn't call it original. But the truth is, there's gonna be people out there who has a simliar art style as theirs, there's really no use in denying it.
Dude you have no idea how similar my problems are with this. I could TRY to make my art unique but in the end, someone may already done it without me or that person ever KNOWING it.
True that, I’ll admit my art style used to look a bit like Ghost and Pals’ style (But like watered down because it wasn’t as similar) thanks to that small phase of my style, my proportions and anatomy got better.

I started using it too because my teacher said shading is a good idea for art styles.
When i did start shading,
She said i was copying.

Tell her off. She needs to get over herself before she gets hurt, no one can own an art technique.
Tell her that by her own logic she’s copying nearly every artist born before her because they shade as well
Then if she stops shading say that she’s copying you
Tell her to go frick herself it’s like saying I HAD HAIR IN MY DRAWING NOBODY ELSE CAN HAVE SOMEONE WITH HAIR IN THEIR ART EVER
shading exists in real life, light (and thus shadow) are what enables us to see the world around us. understanding how light falls upon certain subjects (for example: the shine of hair, the "glow" of skin, the glare of glass, etc) and subsequently, the shadow cast by that light, is how we understand shape and learn to draw things. shading isn't part of a style, it's a fundamental part of creating art with depth and form, which therefore makes it more believable.
Tell her to mind her own beeswax

My point is that it sounded so ridiculous to me that people think that if you have a similarity to another artstyle you’re stealing it. So seeing the thumbnail made me giggle a bit because i had the scene where a thief breaks through someone’s door and steals artstyles. Can I add how good you are in telling people they are stupid? Good grief, guy, girl, whoever you are.
Keoh 8 Good that we agree with something
No i mean we both agree with the fact that stealing art styles is ridiculous, so that’s why the situation is so unrealistic because obviously no one will ever break in your house and tell you to hand them your artstyles. Tho I understand your point, so let’s not discuss over this anymore, because it won’t ever end lol
Someone on deviantart asked for an tutorial of my art style and I was OPEN to teach them! I didn’t care if they were replicating my art style because I knew I can’t own it. Plus it was inspired off the Powerpuff girls and Randy Cunningham. And I was so proud that someone was inspired by my art, and I wanted to help them! So I made a tutorial and a few weeks later they posted their first deviation AND IT WAS (almost) A PERFECT REPLICA OF MY ART STYLE. Like! Terrifying… well… They even showed the sketch which meant they drew it from scratch. And I don’t know if this person knew how to draw before. But I don’t give a crap, because I’m proud of them, and in the end I don’t own my art style.

It got so out of hand that i found people whiteknighting for SlugBox and ripping into this girl because she drew a couple isolated limbs in several of her drawings that looked similar to Slug's. I believe she admitted to tracing some things of his years ago but the kicker? Ppl were calling her out for "Frankensteining". Just let that sink in, ppl were going out of their mind to line up arms and legs and clothing and folds and hair and stuff with different pictures from Slug to witchhunt this girl. I couldn't laugh harder at the hundreds of comments not only using the term "Frankensteining" but also being dead serious about the artist's supposed crime of it.

There are so many videos about how to develop an art style yet it's very rare that anyone actually talks about what art style really is: shortcuts. Artists usually don't perfectly depict reality and instead use certain 'shortcuts' to make the viewer see something, without actually drawing it. And a certain style is simply a combination of these shortcuts. Not really worth becoming obsessed with to the point of accusing others of stealing it. At least in my opinion.

I really agree with the points you’ve said. What I agree with the most is that you can’t replicate a style exactly unless you take well dedicated time to study their techniques and ways with how they draw it. I would also add that no one can draw exactly the same. I would compare this to handwriting. No one’s handwriting is the same no matter how close it is. If you try to replicate someone’s writing or art style, even if you study their techniques for the longest time, it still won’t be the exact same.
(Side comment: I really enjoy your video overall, and I’m really interested into seeing more videos like these from you. :))
Personally for me, I’m actually really upset that according to everyone in these comments, it isn’t possible to completely replicate an artist’s style. I’m currently following an artist and the second I saw their stuff I basically decided I didn’t want my own artstyle anymore - screw originality. I just want my stuff to look like they did it. Whenever anything I do looks remotely like I did it I get upset. I never used to care about art styles but their stuff just looks like how I want my stuff to look like. And I’m not doing it for profit - heck, I’m not even showing my stuff to anyone, so is it still unethical??? I really hope it isn’t…
I’m also just getting really sad that my skills aren’t good enough to replicate their stuff anyway…

Just explain for some of the others who want it, or argue and say "stealing art styles" is a thing
You can't steal a style because every style was inspired in some way by a different style.
Once you've taken different pieces of other styles and put them together you've created another style.
Kermit The Toad This!!! Despite many style similarities, there is an artists who claims they have never referenced off of anyone alses art style in their life, and gets butthurt every time someone says "you can't steal an art style" she used to preach it daily and just block people if they had a different opinion, it was nuts
what about the first person to ever draw?
I want to learn how to "steal" an artstyle so I can then have a base to add on and change and thus mixing it up to make my own.
For all of you content creators out there in general:
"Originality."
Should this word still even be used? Every piece of artwork, story, style, invention, whatever, everything is derivative now. Everything is inspired by everything, or bits and pieces of things are stitched together to create something that is new yet not. But good works have one thing in common: they're good, of course. It doesn't matter how heavily influenced by something else it is, it's still being created by someone that can put a spin on an unoriginal idea and make it more interesting. Of course you can borrow an art style. It doesn't matter. Just take bits and pieces from things you like, use tropes or concepts that have already been developed, and put them together. This is not copying or stealing. You can still let your preferences and quirks shine through. This mindset can be applied to everything.
Don't be original. Don't even try. Just learn from experiences, grow, and have fun. That's all that's important.

To put my two cents in. It takes a FAT minute to figure out your style. If you're a new artist just take the time to develop your skills first. You won't find a style the second you start drawing. It doesn't work that way.
I agree with you man, I'm artist in training my art skills is like a toddler since haven't been drawing for a while, but how can one stole a person style if they practice so hard to replicate one style. No one art style is 100 percent completely original, also we all look to one another style to get better own art style or skills.
I don't think so. I think everyone have their style based on what they see and like, There's no original original style.
EDIT: i think someone said in the comments too, even if you copy every details, there will always, always

(Btw ik some would still use these styles today but back then, lots of ppl would use the sonic style, including me .-.).
"NO"
10/10 MOST DETAILED RANT EVER
I'm not stealing, I'm just borrowing without permission
Hanika-Miya ‘referencing’
I don't remember commenting here
Or inspired for that matter.
Stealing: taking something that doesn’t belong to you without permission
Borrowing: taking something from something else with permission from the owner, and returning it after an amount of time.
You didn't pronounce "Manga" wrong. It's the right pronounciation.
"An Art Style Rant: Can You Steal An Art Style?"
"NO"

short video I approve life is too fast
Oh, and you pronounced "manga" correctly (at least, as closely as a North American English speaker is to be expected to).

4of92000 That's a type of blanket. I think. I'm pretty sure it's for babies. 🤔 They also make wooby sweaters. Fun fact.
you cant steal an art styles but you can mimic an artstyle
when someone says something about this me: 0:00
I agree fully with this video.
I do not care about that my art is in a specific style. Instead I care that it looks good.
And when i Do need a consistent art style, it's for a single project instead of All My Art,
with every project having a different artstyle that's tailored to just that one project.
H-hey.... that’s a.... that’s a nice art style ya got there...
Would be a shame if someone....
_STOLE IT_
I totally agree
I asked my friend if I could draw with her art style because mine was really bad and she didn't care because she was going to change it anyway
Now, my art style is that one that I got from her, and she has her one
My other friend asked me if she could use my art style and I said she could because she was starting making animations and this art is really easy to draw
My only problem was if she literally copied mine so I changed the eyes and legs and she has my old one
My art-style has a lot of anime elements. Despite that, it's pretty unique. Some anime elements include how I draw the face and how I draw the hair. Other elements of my art-style are more cartoon than anime. Some examples of cartoon elements in my style include the blocky feet and the mitten hands.
Finally, someone gets it.

*"No"*
Birbi O I have seen a total of 1 comment that says "no"
I see 'dont get heavily inspired by my art style' a lot for younger artists. some of these artists are great artists, but their style in the first place looks similar to so many other artists. And I think people forget that styles are based off of what people see irl, in other people's art, and more.
2:27 ah yes, the art style of god
IS THE FANART OF THE WEEK A MOTHERFUCKIN JOJOS REFERENCE
I completely agree with this because my friend showed me her style, I used it for a while, and eventually, bit by bit, I developed my own original art style
*2:43** OHHHHH STEEL BALL RUN!!!!!*
oh my god no
I'm not even 2 seconds in and I agree
A good artist copies, but a great artist steal
No thief's steal
@@cupidoscandles. it's a quote by picasso it basically means you take (steal) aspects of other works and make them your own but not directly copying
3:16 me before knowing anything about art styles and stuff....all those long hours of shower thoughts and suferment...
(Luckily now im ok with my art lol)
I never even thought about developing an art style while getting into drawing. I just drew stuff that I liked and it kinda just developed on its own into an anime scribble cartoon amalgamation that I love dearly.
The best art style is the one you feel most comfortable drawing.
*you stole my breathing patterns!*
