I like the way you critique. I can watch your videos without feeling like the artist your critiquing is going to be really upset about getting hate, I believe its more likely that they will take your advice on how to improve than take it as hate.
Hi, I'm the one that drew that art of The Warden. I just wanted to thank you so much, it never crossed my mind that I made his neck TOO BIG! I just thought I drew it a bit crooked or something. Thank you so so much, I can finally fix that picture and make it look somewhat decent. (Also, I'm really not sure if I should be worried or proud that it made the thumbnail. ^^" )
Be proud. No matter what you work made it. Even if the neck is wrong shit you got on Solar sands video and it's the thumbnail. Critiques are amazing and necks are easy to fix. Just get a reference of a model in the you want to do it helps a lot when you can't quite figure out where and how you draw something. Other than the neck you did a great job. Be proud , You're an artist and if you keep working everyday you'll look back at that art and think "Damn i've come to a great part." You still won't feel satisfied, but you can acknowledge your growth and that is very motivational.
Snow Anaya Well in truth, Solarsands made a status on DA, asking for art that people wanted critiqued, so I posted the drawing in the comments since I did feel there was something off about it. Just.. Thank you all for the really kind comments. ;w; I don't normally comment on videos, so this was a very nice thing to come back to,... (And yes, I am a huge SuperJail fan. ;w; This was my first time trying to do some fanart for it,and I wanted to see how the Warden would look in my style. Might try and draw him in the show's style some day... )
my critique as an art noob whi still tries to help: neck looks weird, ear is in a wrong place, mayb use some shade/highlights, colors dont look good, mayb put some reflections on the glasses, eyes and nose placements are kinda weird too .
One of my old friends always critizised me drawings more cartoony and how the necks looked too small, but when she drew necks, damn were they *T H I C C*
philaDelphiaa Honestly, I hate when people comment about this exact comment because if you tried learning their first language and try to write or have a conversation with someone. It's especially bad for them because english is a complex language with random rules that only relate to latin and germanic based languages.
Plus some of the rules are borderline bullsh*t. I myself am a grammar-obsessed brat, but you can't fault someone for not being born with a translation device and Grammarly imbedded into their brain.

Well, he IS DeivantCringe. Though in my opinion, since I actually both like them, DC (just an abbreviation) pretty much also criticizes SOME artworks and at least tries to see what's wrong with the art. But yeah, Solar Sands is much better when it comes to criticism and his voice because he really sounds like he's analyzing it, though I don't think comparing them is good since both of them have their own styles of criticism and the way they make their videos.
I have a friend who makes a mistake I find common with other beginners, that wasn't mentioned. Arm positioning. He always draws either too many joints in the arm, or none at all, same goes for the legs. I always have to correct him on it, and I think the best solution is simply to get a reference for what you're drawing.
Stephen Brown Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be in the art style. For example, if you're doing something for an anime, your OC can still be good if you draw in a more cartoony style. But there are situations where you're right, such as making an Undertale OC and then using an anime base. Then it just seems _really_ out of place.

Thanks a bunch! This is very helpful as I'm an aspiring artist and I'm always looking to improve my style! But one question I would like to ask, what styles, in your opinion, lend themselves to the trend of large, exaggerated eyes?
Extra info no one cares about : Mostly anime has that kind of "BIG EYES" and it began with Osamu Tezuka (who is called the father of manga) who was inspired by Bambi's big eyes! Extra info no one cares about over. But in all seriousness, you should do whatever makes /you/ happy. Your style shouldn't try to please others, only.
Its mostly seen while drawing in anime and chibi style. Their limbs or some specific limbs are mostly drawn in an exaggerated way although that is mostly chibi style, in anime style, however, they are drawn mostly in a proportionate way while being given bigger eyes but in a way that seems proportionate WITH the style, though the eyes aren't drawn HALF as big as chibi eyes are drawn. You can search the terms up on Google for a better grasp of the style they resemble. Hope that helped ^w^
When I draw Warriors I usually draw only one or two notches on a bit older warriors, and maybe 3 on senior warriors. But holy shit that is too much notches. Either 3 notches, or bitten off ear, like Brightheart.
Tord He barely went into the hell of Eddsworld work there is. Yeah, there are great artists in the fandom but hoo boi, he has yet to see the bottom of the barrel. And bottom of the barrel, I mean mostly Tumblr tbh lol.
am I the only one who pressed the video because I enjoy watching Solar Sands Browsing dA vids and not because I'm a tard for some show or whatever bullshit people saw?
Watching this makes me feel nostalgic... As humorous as these old ‘’browsing Deviantart’’ videos were intended to be, they actually really helped me back then!
Nadia Andreeva I just use my own hands as a reference for thumb placement. But anything else with hands, like Galactic Beaver said, ends up an utter train wreck. :')
03:11 The only thing that concerns me about this art is the dark grey cat's ears. How are they not falling apart? (sry for bad english too lazy to type)
5:59 The way I learned when I was drawing realistically (which I actually carried into my style now), is that is if you line up your eyes and your neck, you'll notice that the middle of the eyes are where the lines of the neck should be, if that makes sense.
i subscribed just recently because the way you criticize art is very constructive , and ppl can use ur criticism very easily to improve :) Thx for making videos like these , and most of ur videos are reasons why i don't go on deviant art (3
I watch your vids everytime my drawings seem to look weird. Whenever I watch your vids it really helps me understand art more, and what I might have to improve on. I usually suck a lot when my character is leaning towards the side and I have been getting better with that. Well anyways this video was very helpful and pretty funny :-P xD
This helped a lot, letting me realize what key points I should focus on while drawing. I also love how you include good artists too. Even experienced artists have things they need to fix. One thing you could do though, make side videos or at least link a helpful video that actually is a tutorial on how to fix common mistakes as listed!
I feel so bad, he has no idea that's how it's supposed to look (or somewhat anyways) xd EDIT: I was considering the cartoon, not the actual artist btw :P
He probably hasn't seen the cartoon before, but I have, and although his hair is horn like, the artwork isn't too lined with the small horns, as compared to bigger horns that he has - even if it was more of Paul's style than Edd's.
+Streamline sorry I should edit my comment, I meant that that is SOMEWHAT how it is supposed to be drawn considering the cartoon, not the actual artist ://
Also with the lucario drawing. From what I can see they used a reference of mega lucario in which it has its hands glowing hence some light reflected on its head. So it's just bad use of reference
As an artist, who draws since the year 2005, your video is very good and helpful! Actually I didn't even thought about some things you have mentioned. And now I can say, that I should be more aware of those mistakes! Thanks for making this! You are a really smart person and should make more of those videos!
Meeposity ROBLOX, Animal Jam, And More! it isn't weird, I watch videos like this all the time when I am recording speedpaints (I am not a native English speaker, I apologise for any mistakes)
I think I found the reason for rlly tall bodies mistakes. Some artists probably want to draw more human proportions and end up trying to make the characters not seem so small. From personal experience it was because I barely drew anything below the waist of characters, and when I did it would be those anime chibi things. Since I found this to be a slight problem, I forced myself to make my characters taller to get a better understanding of how I should proportion the body. In the beginning my characters looked stretched but I eventually fixed this by making them slightly more wide to make them proportional. Idk if this applies to everyone tho
5:07 I think this person suffered the same problem I used to. Not knowing to use layers on a drawing. It really helps to separate coloring and line art on separate layers
Huh, these are great advices actually, great video. Most people would simply show plain criticism with no resolution, and even criticise by the artist's artstyle, but you have your points and arguments well structured.
this was pretty good actually, im glad that solar actually gives advice for artists other than just saying "oh look at this cringey art!!!" id love to see a part two for this. keep up the good content solar 👌
Tell Disney about 6:30 ! I hate it when they have this big realistic thing (let's say a shelf) and then they have a certain object all cartoony and you can obviously tell that it's the object a character is going to interact with. It's just really annoying to me.
That also bothered me. Like there's a room that is realistic, and then there's one little specific thing that is all cartoony and you can already tell that's the character is going to interact with, which seems really unnatural and sometimes annoying because the textures don't match.
LPS Nilla Wafer i don't watch a lot of disney's works so i never really noticed that but i did notice it in tom and jerry and thats an old cartoon they probably had to do that or it seemed good to them, anyway it is annoying
That's not an artistic choice; it's the medium. Back before computer animation, from the dawn of animation to around the early 2000s, animators used what they called "cels". A background painter would paint everything that would be staying still. Then the other animators would paint cels, sheets of clear plastic featuring characters, parts of characters, and all the other parts that would "move" in the scene. Say they wanted a character to move through some bushes. The background guy would paint a row of bushes with a gap in it and the cel guys would paint the branch that would cover that gap and get pushed away. They'd set the cels in the right order, take a picture of the finished frame, the background artist would paint a new version of the background, adding in the things that won't be moving from that point on, and the cycle begins again. Because the backgrounds didn't move and the audience would be staring at them for a while, they were usually drawn and painted in a more detailed style, while the moving objects on the cels were flatter and less detailed for time's sake, and because they'd only be on screen for a fraction of a second. In addition, every cell you stack on makes the ones underneath look slightly darker, so even on less detailed backgrounds, objects that were currently sitting still but would soon be moving would stick out from the background. Unfortunate, but mostly unavoidable until computer animation made things easier.
Well---some peeps do make exaggerated titles because one, it's in for shits and giggles and two, they can't come up of anything. I'm both lol...i do it all the time...
Part 2 would be nice. I really appreciate this video, it's hopefully going to help a lot of people out. When I was younger I did that neck thing, nowadays I have faith that my necks no longer look like tree trunks.
Most of these can be summed up in one word: inconsistency. These ideas about "looks good" or "looks bad" are not defined by absolutes. Rather, weather a piece of art is considered "good" or "bad" often comes down to the internal consistency of the piece. It seems like any art style can look good as long as it is consistent within the whole piece. That is, unless the inconsistency is intentional, such as drawing one character as different from the rest to suggest that they are different somehow. That applies to any form of art, really. Breaking a "rule" is sometimes ok IF it is used for a purpose (such as a song suddenly deciding not to rhyme one phrase and instead say something sincere at the end of a verse).
I'm a bit late but it's not just the hair, it is also her LEFT eye as well. Don't get me wrong, it is an EXCELLENT piece and it is quite obvious that the artist has a well understanding of coloring, and how drawing the manga works, it is kinda common to see great experienced artists make magnificent work but sometimes they can tend to overlook a mistake due to having to look and stay in a focus train of thought while drawing, especially if they turn in the work without having someone else look at it since everyone has a different perspective on art. That said, the art is glorious, I've never seen the anime but in most anime, from where I'm looking, the left eye from OUR perspective seems just a little to big, usually when a human head is turning in a 3/4 view, the bigger side whichever the eye is on will tend to be larger while the eye on the side with less space where the nose connects with the brow, will generally be, narrow, almost as if the eye is folded a little bit. If it helps flipping the picture on opposite sides helps catch this but if you're traditional, using a mirror helps too, you can also turn your drawing upside down to see if it seems a bit off.
The that annoys me when people use references is that a lot of the time they try to copy the picture line for line and honestly isn't what references are used for
holy shit i just wanna say watching your browsing deviantart videos actually gave me good tips like the leaning mistake and the tiny forehead and ofc shading
Solar: *Puts Matt eddsworld in the thumbnail and shows Edd* Me, and veteran eddheads: im here. Edit: Fun fact: The red guy with Hoodie and weird hair named tord, he's the main villain on the eddsworld legacy and he does have horns. look at my pfp.
Hi, I have a question, How do you tell someone they're making these sort of mistakes without coming off as a prick? Specially when said (quite young) person looks up to you? I can't tell them their art is cringey and barf-worthy but I can't tell them it's good either or else they might never want to improve, thinking they're actually good because I said so. Idk what to do man.
I think you should point out what's wrong with the drawing, or tell them to use another style since that style doesn't fit with the drawing. (if it doesn't fit)
Valeria Krumdieck Try this: Tell them what they did good on, give constructive criticism, then give one last compliment. That way you sound polite, but are telling them they need to improve.
though you didn't review my art at all, I just want to say this video has helped me a lot. I tend to draw very detailed hair on more animated characters, though I have been working on it. I also have a problem with drawing my characters too tall. It's hard to draw a tall person when they are standing next to a short one, but anyways this video was very informative and it probably has helped a lot of people. ❤

Watching this makes me feel nostalgic... As humorous as these old ‘’browsing Deviantart’’ videos were intended to be, they actually really helped me back then!
I'd like to point out another common mistake that I've seen, the placement of the thumbs I'm still trying to avoid this mistake
Nadia Andreeva its a real struggle. xD
Nadia Andreeva I just use my own hands as a reference for thumb placement.
But anything else with hands, like Galactic Beaver said, ends up an utter train wreck. :')
I only just stopped that. :P
Showing knuckles: the thumb is pointing towards the body
Showing palm: the thumb is pointing outwards, away from the body
To avoid this mistake is by, simply, using a reference.

One thing you could do though, make side videos or at least link a helpful video that actually is a tutorial on how to fix common mistakes as listed!
i fucking lost my shit at the tord drawing

Tordy Bordy his hair though!!! I was losing it

4:55 "..such as the odd shape of the hair." Bruh, ma boi Tord has the best hair :
I feel so bad, he has no idea that's how it's supposed to look (or somewhat anyways) xd
EDIT: I was considering the cartoon, not the actual artist btw :P
Dj Dj I've seen the shape of Tord's hair before and even that person hadn't drawn it in such a way that it translated well.
I messed up on the hair as well, it looks more like 2 locks of hair than 2 horns.
He probably hasn't seen the cartoon before, but I have, and although his hair is horn like, the artwork isn't too lined with the small horns, as compared to bigger horns that he has - even if it was more of Paul's style than Edd's.
+Streamline
sorry I should edit my comment,
I meant that that is SOMEWHAT how it is supposed to be drawn considering the cartoon, not the actual artist ://
I don't see anything wrong with the blue haired anime girl. I saw art of her before and that's how her bangs are on her head. Idk
It could be that it's angled too much to the left if that makes sense.
Also with the lucario drawing. From what I can see they used a reference of mega lucario in which it has its hands glowing hence some light reflected on its head. So it's just bad use of reference
Yep, you are right! She's a pretty popular anime character.
For me she looks like her hair is a wing that falling down..
OfelieArt but the thing is that it's really not off place at all, the hairstyle in the anime is asymmetrical like that.
5:29 - "Apply directly to the forehead"

Idk if this applies to everyone tho
actually the rem picture is exactly how the hair is in the anime
Tashas Farm in not anime
Tashas Farm yeah that’s what i thought too ! I saw it and started screaming re zero on the inside
Yes , her hair is weird as shit, even in the anime and in the manga
Though I think her eyes are a bit missplaced.

I think this person suffered the same problem I used to. Not knowing to use layers on a drawing. It really helps to separate coloring and line art on separate layers
4:55 the hair is oddly shaped on purpose. This is a character from a UA-cam channel called EddsWorld. That is what his normal hair looks like

Huh, these are great advices actually, great video.
Most people would simply show plain criticism with no resolution, and even criticise by the artist's artstyle, but you have your points and arguments well structured.
Really like the constructive criticism you suggest to these artists and the community :) keep up the good work!
My least favorite thing is when people have amazing coloring and shading and it looks great but the proportions and actual sketch lack
Omg the only comment that resonates me
It give me hope when he calls them *artists*
this was pretty good actually, im glad that solar actually gives advice for artists other than just saying "oh look at this cringey art!!!"
id love to see a part two for this. keep up the good content solar 👌
LPS Nilla Wafer i don't watch a lot of disney's works so i never really noticed that
but i did notice it in tom and jerry and thats an old cartoon they probably had to do that or it seemed good to them, anyway it is annoying
I’m sorta a new at digital art so I’ve been watching Solar Sands. Sensational video man!

I don't really get the complaint about Rem (6:34) I mean... isn't it obvious that's just how her hair is? :p
ShainCake to be fair, the hair is a bit off center and Solar Sands has likely not watched the anime so he does not know the character.
The eye is over lapping the hair
the hair's perspective doesn't really match the head's perspective
3:06 OMG THAT IS FLIPPING ADORABLE💖

Hi, I have a question,
How do you tell someone they're making these sort of mistakes without coming off as a prick? Specially when said (quite young) person looks up to you? I can't tell them their art is cringey and barf-worthy but I can't tell them it's good either or else they might never want to improve, thinking they're actually good because I said so. Idk what to do man.
step 1: tell them to kill themselves
I think you should point out what's wrong with the drawing, or tell them to use another style since that style doesn't fit with the drawing. (if it doesn't fit)
Valeria Krumdieck
Try this: Tell them what they did good on, give constructive criticism, then give one last compliment. That way you sound polite, but are telling them they need to improve.
Sima Cat he’s just giving the constructive criticism for them to improve.
Idk man 🤔

Ahhahahahah funy
though you didn't review my art at all, I just want to say this video has helped me a lot. I tend to draw very detailed hair on more animated characters, though I have been working on it. I also have a problem with drawing my characters too tall. It's hard to draw a tall person when they are standing next to a short one, but anyways this video was very informative and it probably has helped a lot of people. ❤
