All though most drum instruction videos are tedious. I was able to watch and learn from this one. Trying any thing new and breaking old set patterns is good. Even with all the technique this drummer still has some groove and feel. Very Good.

Just purchased two Duallist D4 pedals. I placed one on each bass drum... Insane rhythms. Feels good to have a new toy in 28 years of basically the same equipment to drum. This pedal is surely a game changer. AND, don't judge until you tried it... Thx.

Omg thank you so much for posting this!!! I've been reading all of my back issues of MD and Mr Franco contributed quite a lot to the magazine. 🥁I'd like to bookmark chapterZ that I find the most interesting and useful...

Joe Franco is one of my favorite drummers. I love his style. He does not always overplay but when he turns it up, he knocks you on your ass. I wish the sound from the last Widowmaker concert clip didn't suck so bad...

Funny he played in Dee's Widowmaker when back in the day, The Good Rats were a fellow NYC area band that competed with Twisted Sister.

Others I've seen focused more on the constant 16ths at alternative tempos. Tomas Lang has his own really developed double bass ideas exhibited in his videos but are based on advanced rudiment applications. He doesn't outline a mode of bass drum dexterity like this. The only one closest was a dated ginger baker video illustrating the right foot lead with left foot fill ins but this video shows exact exercises and patterns which encourages the dexterity while also being grooves on their own. Lang dvd is a great next step, the baker video a great introduction. This video a proper exhibit of the method towards double bass mastery,. Any disagree?

      I’m in complete agreement
There’s been an explosion of super technical and fast double kick players…and I’m always keen to learn new techs
However, relentless machine gun 16ths can leave me cold-it’s become more of an athletic feat (feet?) than musical
Joey’s patterns can be used at ANY tempo, so you can create complementary or counter-rhythmic ideas

I like how explains his logic behind the exercises.

Back in the days when a bass drum actually sounded like a bass drum and not like a click drum.

shit i remember seeing this video on vhs on school tour in Paris in 1989...i wanted to buy but it was like equiv €70 at the time. How old is this? i notice he has some interesting pedals and the Hhat is legless and an unusual rack. This is useful stuff.

Any thoughts on throne height? Alex Van Halen is like 18" off the ground.

I'm only 5' 8" but I sit up as high as Quest Love who is 6' 3". Do whatever is comfortable for your body. The Tool guy is also tall, but sits low so I think it's really a case-by-case basis.
