Thank you Dave for updating us on the Celica. It's been a while, but what I love about this project, is that it's more realistic of what the average person goes through. So often we see these "one week builds" or whatever, and it's never like that in real life. Can't wait to see Connie back on the show.
I was at Tim Hortons the other day gettin my double double and I was right behind Dave in line. He was talking about how he only gives PT a hard time about BMW because he wishes he bought an e21 instead of Connie. 100% true story...
The fuel rail and harness do come apart, but dont reuse the same injectors. There is a 4 pintle upgrade out there which made my car run smoother. Also, the check valve and hoses are available on Angry Ass Solutions.

I know you guys have put endless hours of work to build your channel/brand. But so envious of what you two do for a living! Awesome channel and continued success!
If you’re having doubts on the gearbox, I’m sure you can find a getrag 260 for a decent price somewhere. They are plenty strong, and bolt right up to an s38. Ratios are almost the same as the g280 aswel, just a tad shorter in 1st 2nd and 3d, which actually suits the car.
WTF is that transmission doing in there? That's a Getrag 265! You're supposed to have a Getrag 280. No big deal, the 265s hold up well. You have a later one (85 and newer, 265) as the 84's had removable bell housings (260s). It looks like someone welded a 260/265 bell housing judging by the bottom bell housing slot that shouldn't be there.
Yeah, when PT was like, this may have been in an E28, I was like, uhhh... M cars and standard BMWs didn't share gearboxes in this era. So yeah, good on you for calling it out. I will say tho from having an E28 M5, the 280 gearbox is a lot less pleasurable to drive with than the 265.
That is 1000% a Getrag 280. Early ones had the provisions for the earlier Motronic. Later 280’s had a closed bearing on the input shaft and a few other internal differences. I rebuilt my 280 2 years ago, I would know. They’re prone to having problems and not exactly rebuildable, so when they go bad you just have to find another and make it work. I have an early open bearing one with the Motronic sensors in my ‘91. The mounting ears have been drilled more “forward” so that it could be used in a 260 application, since a 280 is a 260 front and rear case with a 1”-1.5” thick intermediate housing to help hold the gears together.
So refreshing hear DP with some kind words about god’s chosen engine manufacturer and configuration. Maybe you can come to the barbecue after all DP 😂 also just wanted to say how incredibly interesting that whole transmission situation is. I’ve seen the other comments about it being the wrong transmission for the car, but honestly kind of impressive how it was welded and made to work. Just another reminder how old these cars really are at this point. 30+ years of work to keep them on the road.
Red white and blue vacuum lines were in the late 70s BMWs. The E 34 M5 never had a blue vacuum line. I used to tear those apart when they were new to build stroker motors.
Orange tag Getrag 280’s are the correct model for the E34 M5. They would not have had the drilled sensor bosses for the earlier Motronic, you’re right there. The fluid level on the G280 is lower than the G260 which the 280 is based off, and the orange label ones ran ATF, which has probably contributed to the high failure rate. It’s not uncommon to see hacked together 280’s like this. I currently have a Green label 280 from a euro E24/E28 in my ‘91 right now. It has also had some odd repairs and modifications to help it fit into different applications. It’s just the thing people have had to do to keep these rare cars on the road.
If you havent decided on exhaust yet Ireland engineering makes killer exhaust systems and make sure you replace that shifter assembly with a chassis mounted shifter. It makes a huge difference. Replaced mine in my e28 and it's properly short and responsive but yet won't cause missed shifts
the drama over rubber hose is palatable. The cars 30 years old, this is all par for any car. I get tho it's entertainment. I would love to have that car to work on. I already have a E46 and E90. Love my fully sorted BMW's. Thanks for the video.
I wonder if that wrinkle finish is oil resistant? Perhaps it is since it's made by VHT. Depending on the durability and feel of that texture, I'd be tempted to topcoat it with a few coats of matte/satin clear, if only to make it easier to clean and wipe down.
I just watched M539 send his injectors to get cleaned for his Alpina, and that did not work out well for him as they started leaking. I'd buy new ones.
I've had my injectors professionally cleaned on every car I've owned including an E39 540i and and E60 M5; and I have never had a problem with damage after the fact. As long as it's done properly, they should be just fine.
Those check valves are the worst lol. I may or may not have super glued them back together before and they may or may not have lasted a lot longer after that lol
there's an oil drain pipe and a plate on the back of the head (that often leak) that will never be easier to reach than it is now (unless you remove the engine).
The Getrag 280 (E24 M635CSI / E28 M5) had provisions for the crank sensor because the M88/3 took it from the flywheel, the E34 M5 Getrag 280/5 didn't have that sensor mount as the S38 took it from the crank hub. Maybe they welded around the sensor mount as a precaution?
FI are one of the most overlooked parts in the whole fuel system (only second to filters) and actually can make a night & day difference whit the smoothness of engines, in terms of performance well, lets say you gain back what you should have had in the 1st place.
gasoline boils at 140 degrees Fahrenheit you need to get copper coil 12v immersion heater and start vaporizing your stored gas vapor low pressure system
At least on the s54, you can just pull up on that injector harness and the clips come off, you don't need to fiddle with a screwdriver to pry them out.
I'd think it'd be easier to just pull the engine and refresh that way. Then you have much better access to the bay. Maybe invest in a vapor hone or dry ice blaster like others mentioned.
More work than it's worth. Supposed to be a quick and easy refresh, not a rotisserie build. Unless the headgaskets have failed or the rear main seal is leaking, there's no point in pulling that motor. A top end refresh is likely all that's needed here.
