great content for s38 fans. i've had similar troubles with the digi-sync and use an old carb-tune tool as well. You're balancing the idle air bypass screws here, so if you open the throttle (to raise the idle speed) they're going to have very little effect. As these cars age, and the throttle shafts wear (and you get some air leaks) the idle bypass adjustment is going to do very little. I watched a friend / s38 guru adjust these by ear, close them all, open 1.5 turns and adjust 1 by 1 for best idle and initial throttle response to a throttle blip. Car never ran better after that.
Not a BMW guy myself but I can really appreciate all the time and effort that goes into taking care of this one. Good stuff as always Pete and DP. Keep up the work guys!
You guys should consider just ASMR during the installation segments. It’s been a nice change on tommy’s channel over the music. Just an idea. Great video as always!
Might be one of my fav episodes as of late. This engine is one of the greats and I had no idea how advanced it was working on one. Really does showcase the type of ownership experience one would be.
Never want to do a valve adjustment on one of these! Haha. Great to see all the nitty gritty of getting it running right. Angry Ass doing the lord's word keeping these cars on the road.
Nice video. For synchronising carbs I use a wideband lambda with an Ecumaster DET3. (€340 together) In log mode, if you zoom in (time scale), you can see every single combustion stroke per cylinder and adjust the itb's accordenly. On de dyno the tuner was amazed when he hooked op the carbs synchroniser how accurate it was.
BMW oil leak? No way! lol. I enjoy watching you diagnose and chase these gremlins, even while it dissuades me from buying old German cars. I'm at best 10% of the wrench as you guys are.
I've found the Morgan Carbtune Pro to be a pretty good fluid/mechanical syncing tool. I also have the Techmate Carbmate, which is electronic but measures the difference between two TBs and to pretty high resolution. The Heal-Tech eSync tool has always looked interesting but I've never tried it.
Loved the fact that the “shim-guy” spent a lot of fiddly work on that engine and Pete saying “that was kinda easy” afterwards🤣 Really enjoyed this episode, I’m more of a “JDM guy” but I do appreciate the episodes where you’re working on the German cars
Great work as always! Your down-to-earth approach makes it all seem doable for the average DIY wrencher. And knowing when to call help in! FYI, that little white/black vacuum piece should be a check valve, not a filter. If installed backwards they can cause all sorts of issues!
Best episode in recent memory! Couple of thoughts…great insights into the S38 a hand built superstar…kudos to SA’s roving team of gurus, no other channel does it better…great insight into why these engines require such rigorous maintenance (and why it’s expensive). Finally “Angry Ass Solutions “? These seemed tailor made for DP to take the piss on his favourite subject: over complicated BMW’s 😂
Man im so glad I bought a C5Z corvette over the 135i... It was really close I even went to drive one and really liked it. But the more research I did, the more horror stories I found about just the general maintenance and working on it. So far 3 years in the vette has been rock solid!
Replacing the lower TB gaskets would of been advised if you were going that deep. But what a great kit. Definitely saves hours looking for the right parts
As far as syncing the TB's- I'd put some small orifices in those vacuum lines to dampen the signal . They're usually called "pills". I remember years ago places selling them but all I can find right now is OEM Subaru ones. They are also pretty simple to make with a tiny lathe.
Not many cars have chain tensioners outside the timing cover. If anything that makes this car easier to work on than most. And the fact thay he had so much access to that bolt means it was built with replacement in mind. Unlike some cases which would require removing the front end to remove it.
Thanks again for providing many examples of why I moved away from German cars. I enjoy living vicariously through this channel, but what a cluster fuck (from a former Subaru owner at that).
Hey man, I don't think you'll get it running 100% with the digi sync. I used one on my 95 m5 it only made things worse. You want the mantis manometer look it up
I saw the "Angry Ass Air Pump Delete Kit" that you said will be installed. But later I saw the original air pump is still there in Video Part 2 of 2. Did you run into problem installing it?
Ok, Maybe is my mistake, as it is hard to see the installed "Angry Ass (Air Pump Delete) Idle Pully". The lowest thing which I thought was "Air Pump" in the PT2 (maybe) is the A/C Compressor?
is this common in the m54 engine? i hear a ticking noise too and oil leaks somewhere around the belt area just can’t get underneath it right now to confirm
Well that's more than 30 years old vehicle with not so good previous owners and you sarcastically said"Surprise surprise".There is no surprise there. Please, you and other UA-camrs if you constantly pooping on beaters Bimmers than stop putting them on your channel.Sure you going to lose half of the views but hey Bimmers are bad and you would have no headache. You know better than I that people love BMW content and love Bimmers. That is why you and countless others do this.Just put videos of your work on it and stop pooping on BMW.True passionate people just trying to fix them not poop on them. That is why dude from M539 is a pleasure to watch. No crying just passionate work on neglected cars.I don't mean no harm just reminder some of your viewers are passionate about those Bavarian Money Wasters that we cannot help our selfs than get mad when someone else poops on our weakness.Cheers.
Wait, did you just say Sreten doesnt poop on BMWs?! Are we watching the same channel because he constantly complains about the design and issues that come with them. I also 💩 on BMWs because that is the truth. They are hard and annoying to work on but when done right they are amazing to drive.
@@speedacademy Now if you want please tell me what is easiest car brand to work on it.I am not comparing you and Sreten I just saying he fixes cars with passion.Sure he is complaining but not just to be like others who do that for a views. In my opinion he does because he is truly frustrated with some of design flaws.Anyway you do you and I will always say my peace.Cheers.
Hondas and Toyotas are much easier to work on, heck even a Subaru is. What I am saying is there is good reason why most people who work on BMWs complain about them. My complaints are really not just for views. Id much rather be driving it then fixing it!
@@speedacademy I wouldn't be caught dead driving Toyota or newer Honda or changing spark plugs on Subaru.I just hope that BMW figure it out how to put good engine oil seals so that they don't mess up my driveway 😆. Jokes aside if people enjoy driving Sienna, btw is really functional and they don't break often, than more power to them.As for me I'm gonna continue to scrub my driveway 😭😊. Cheers
I was about to prove you wrong stating that I own several (old) Opels/Vauxhalls which NEVER fail or leak but realised just in time that there are GM-engines in them, so american instead of German🤣
I've really like the looks of some BMWs over the years and loved driving, other folks, M cars. However, I've never been brave enough to make the jump into BMW ownership. Over the last 25 ish years they seem so finicky and impossible to work on.
Pete: these cars are pretty reliable as long as you change every single hose, seal, gasket, grummet, o-ring and washer, actuator, and every other thing that might wear ever in a car, yeah, they're very reliable. So for the price of two Corollas (to which you will not have to do any of this) in "maintenance" parts you have a pretty reliable car. Lol
@@BMWVX I guess you read Corolla in a old M5 video and felt offended, I'm sorry about that... ...bmw owners are as delicate as their cars. But I actually did compare the price of two Corolla to the price of the replacement parts of BMWs. And mentioned the reliability of Toyota's best selling car, and the best selling nameplate in the world. Pretty sure that's why you felt offended, BMW and reliability should go anywhere close to each other.
Pete's love for BMWs will keep this channel alive with BMW maintenance content
Basically endless “opportunities” ;)
It's the only reason I watch the channel, tbh. The Japanese stuff doesn't do anything for me.
@@DannysGarage you'll have plenty of bmw content to look forward too then
😂😂😂
An old M5 this clean and well preserved is a rare sight even here in Germany. This car 100% deserves your care.
Speed Academy and G&G! Better than Saturday morning cartoons as a kid!
No doubt. Love a coffee and Speed Academy video.
I was just thinking this

Every time I'm tempted to buy an old beamer, I watch your videos, and snap out of it. Thank you SA.

Paul makes it look easy, that's experience. Nicely done.
I got nervous seeing that pick poking around that camshaft though. I'm no expert but I know how those picks can score metal easily.
Paul is my friend IRL he and I did the valve adjustment on my E28 M5.
Wow I normally don't comment on vendors but these angry ass people are insane. Thank you Greg!
“Because that’s what every UA-cam video is about” jimmy oakes knows that all too well lol live for it
You see one of James Oakes' cars you've seen 'em all ...
I live vicariously through you, after watching you work on this car I am not sure I'd ever want to own one. Fun to watch though!
I love old M5’s and I do not lie,

The small black/white vacuum unit is a one way valve 👍

such a satisfying video watching all those vacuum lines replaced, dunno why haha
If you like that than you will love watching M539 Restorations replace every single broken part and then clean everything, it's like medicine for OCD!

Angry Ass Solutions sounds like something I'd need after downing a sixer of Molson and $20 of Taco Bell.
Also these BMW's use an idle valve and when the car idles the throttle bodies are close shut. Something to know.
