- In this video, I aim to give a comprehensive breakdown on how to play MODOK in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. The content of this video follows my completed written tutorial on SRK as well as my original video tutorial, along with updated information. Sorry for the switch to annotations for the text halfway through! There was an issue with the editing software and this was the best way to deal with it.

i love fighters, but don't play umvc3 (bought it a month or so ago but it just seems so much to tackle on!) yet i've kept coming back to this video for years. every rewatch i just stare at it in awe

For the combos: fly = command flight, jump = low flight.
Amazing work! I've had an itch to explore Modok (despite me hating his face lol, not counting the dark purple look)...and you may have just cemented me into doing it. I haven't played with him in a while now, but I know Worstplayer and he was the first real 'Dok player I've fought that knew what he was doing.
I wish there was a video for every charater like this. It's beautiful...

Top video, thanks! I think the reason most people don't play MODOK is because he's so didfficult to use. Even his basic launcher-m-m-h-s combo requires unusually specific timing, and "basics" aren't very basic! If you're experianced with Combos, you have to put ALOT of work in just to half decent with MODOK's combos & fighting style. It's a shame because it's beautiful to watch when MODOK is beasting players.

Great guide, makes me wanna try a Modok team, I always wanted to try using jaming bomb shenanigans ^^I already play strange a bit and have a mediocre doom waiting to level up. Let's give it a try. What do you think of Modok, Dorm, Doom as a team ?

Ragenin507 It's not a bad team, but personally, I find MODOK/Strider to be lacking in the damage department. You'd probably want to go for something like this on most clean hits once you only have Dok/Strider: (IAD j.L, cr.L, st.M, cr.H, IAD j.M, cr.H, IAD j.M, S, j.MMHS, dash in, cr.M, fly, j.S, adjust position so that you are about a character distance away from the corner, f.H, L bomb, f.H, jump, addf, S+call Vajra, j.L, Strider hits, addf, j.S, cr.M, L blaster, hyper). That corner carries and will let you get your assist extension. Usually doing to the double air series BnB is the way to go, but you can't really do that to get an assist extension with Strider, which will do more damage. It does require that you don't use j.S in your starter though.
When you say "fly" in your combos, does that mean low flight, or command flight?

The main trick for that followup is doing an air dash up forward while still on the ground (usually referred to as a grounded air dash). When MODOK air dashes off the ground, it doesn't actually get counted as an air dash and you can still air dash one more time. This is useful in neutral and for combos like this because it lets you move quickly around the screen with 2 air dashes near the ground.
Usually, you have 1 frame I believe to do an air dash while on the ground, making this easiest to perform on a Hitbox controller. However, you can also buffer this input after certain actions, making it much easier to perform. Those actions include: near the end of recovery of any move (such as cubes or blasters), during the XFactor freeze, during super jump startup
Here is an example of using a grounded air dash for pressure and being buffered after a cube: ua-cam.com/video/jBSFs7ID9R4/v-deo.html
For that followup in particular, there are actually multiple ways to get to the opponent for the pickup. It is possible to wavedash or plink dash multiple times to get the cr.M in range. Performing 2 grounded air dash trijumps (9L+M, j3L+M)x2 will also put cr.M in range.
In the video and what I personally found easiest, was doing 1 grounded air dash into 1 wavedash then the flight pickup with cr.M (Inputs - I'll use numpad notation: XF, 9L+M, j3L+M, 5L+M, 2M, 214S, 5L+M, jM).
If I remember correctly, I think it's also possible to do 1 grounded air dash then 2 wavedashes or 1 grounded air dash then a basic trijump (9, j3L+M) to get in range.
Beyond that, as you mentioned, you will want to XF immediately when the last hit of HPB hits. Doing so will maximize the time you have to reach the opponent and connect with a cr.M.

Haha I suppose that doesn't hold true for a good number of teams, though it's still a bit impractical to do the combo in the video (cr.H starter in the corner). You'd only really get that starter on a jammed incoming opponent or one jammed and behind a big barrier. By then, they'd have less than 800k health, so just a normal BnB would kill. It'd be useful if you get a grab in the corner. BnB's with optimal MODOK teams can break 1 mil off of a cr.H full screen too (and build more meter).

It's still possible to play a decent MODOK on a high level those. I mean Royal Flush and Frusti both have pretty basic MODOKs too...but they get far in tournaments.
I demand you produce one of these videos for every character of every fighting game I play and i will pay in the form of ad revenue.
