Beginning Intarsia? What wood should you use?

- I was asked by a viewer if I would do a video talking about the best wood to use for intarsia. That question could be answered a million different ways because I am sure there are a million different opinions on what wood types are best. So, in this video, I talk about different kinds of wood that I have personally used, my experiences with them, and my likes and dislikes about them.
I do summarize what wood I believe is best to start with when doing intarsia at 19.32. And those are cedar, poplar, and pine.
Check out the Janka Scale, it is at the end of this page: cyscorner.wordpress.com/2018/...

Thanks for taking the time to tell us about the woods. The more information I can get...THE BETTER!
You're welcome! I have learned a lot since the making of this video! Sounds like you are on the hunt for information!
Just came across this video as I FINALLY bought my first scroll saw! I’ll be checking out more of your videos to learn whatever I can and also for inspiration.😀
Hello! You will love intarsia!!! Enjoy!!!
Hi Cy, I sent you the message about what woods to use so thanks for making this video ! I have gotten 15 pieces of exotic woods just to try and see what I think of them. Some woods I had never heard of... But I will try them all and see what works and what doesn't. Thanks again !
You're welcome and thanks for asking me to make this video :)
Yes it is hard to get wood here in Louisiana. And yes I remember the place you and husband went to here, about 20 mins away. I found a new place, well not new,but new to me,riverside lumber around the New Orleans area, lot of choices....thanks for the info on this...have a great early weekend...
Oh cool you found a place in LA, nice!!!
Wow Cy! I learned so much from this video! Thank you for taking the time to give your reviews of all the woods you’ve used and then some. I thought if I ever find that amazing pneumatic sander you have, at least I think that’s what you use besides sandpaper, I would just stain pieces of pine to get the variations in color. I see now that the density, texture and grain matter too. I did pick up some little pieces of zebra, Purple Heart, Paduk and black walnut at Rockler here in FL, when I first started following you. So many pretty woods! I have always loved trees and felt closer to God everytime I climbed up in my big mango tree as a child. There’s so much they provide us with and I’m grateful you are someone who shows ways to celebrate the beauty of their wood!
Hey Andi!!! You would absolutely love the pneumatic sander. Here is a link because it is hard to find for some reason.

Glad you found some of those nice pieces of fun colored wood! I love your story of climbing the mango tree, I always feel closer to God when I am outside. :)
Cy's Corner Thank you Cy! I’ll be saving up for awhile, but this is definitely a tool I need to add to my shop.
Always enjoy your videos and all things you make
Thank you so much :)
Lol you always make my day. Great educational video 🙏😉
Oh good, I am so glad Lydia :)
Thanks for the great info about wood.I have started my first intarsia project. It's a rose and I am using oak for the flower and black walnut for the well i am not sure what is called so I am going to call it the bud.
Sweet!!! I hope all goes well with the oak, I am sure it will. :)
Cyprus is one of the rare conifers that sheds it's needles in the winter like a broad leaf tree does. It's very soft and very stable so it doesn't twist and warp.
Thanks for the info. :)!!!
Hi Cy, Only you could spend 20 minutes explaining about loads of wood and then come up with (I don't know if that helps) of course it helped, I don't do intarsia but if I was to take it up then this video would be the holy grail of knowledge.
:) hee heee, thanks John :)
You can find popular in browns and purples as well. It is the softest of the hard woods.
Awesome!!!
Hi Cy, has it ever been suggested to you to try spiral bales for your hard wood I love them, spiral #7 works great for hard wood.
Yes I have used spiral blades before! I need to try them again though!
purple heart, paduch, / now I go look for the equipment you use for your art.
I have an Amazon store that has all the stuff(or nearly all the stuff) I use, or things similar.

Best when starting out, is whatever you can afford, and pallet wood is a good choice.. :-)
So true Kurt! I have had some nice pallet wood, it is just so hard to take apart. I end up cutting it apart!!!
@@CysCorner a sawsall works great, but I have done what you do on the outside supports and knock the middle out with a hammer.
I'm just starting out and I'm glad to hear using pallet wood is normal haha. I feel bad buying wood when I can just get it for free as well.
Have you ever tried Amaranth-Wood? It's also very hard to cut. And strange: it has normal dark brown color, when it is fresh cut. And it get purple after a while at the air.
Wow, that sounds really interesting! I haven't tried it but I would like to!
purpleheart is name amaranth in french,is amaranth-wood the same thing ???
Hi cy can you tell where you get blue pine?

Is there a place in Texas where to purchase those types of wood???
Hello, I don't know of any place in Texas. There may be one though. I do have a list of places I do get wood, most are in Oregon, one is in Georgia and one in Florida. A lot of them ship, but then it adds to the cost but it may be worth checking in to!

I have thought about making stain using watercolors. Have used stains?
M
I have made stain with water colors before, it is difficult to make a smooth consistency. It balls up, or did for me anyway. But it still worked, I just had to crush it/blend it up as I used it.
Hi Cy,
Do people send you some of the exotic woods you can’t find in Oregon?
I have never had anyone send me some exotics. Oregon has a pretty good selection!
Cy's Corner love your work.
We’re did you get your blue pine from?
I have a page on my website that lists where I get my wood.
I'll leave a link! cyscorner.wordpress.com/where-i-get-my-wood/
