I was fortunate in that a local baker allowed me to do janitorial work in exchange for baked goods ( I was 12 - 15) and with the government cheese provided at that time, made sandwiches for me and my siblings to take to school with an apple.
Yes, let’s fire a woman with a huge heart that doesn’t want to see children go hungry, and try to learn on an empty stomach. Tons of the food gets thrown away, and it’s beyond disgusting that this school would rather the food go in the garbage than feed their students. This story is sickening. That beautiful woman deserves a raise, NOT unemployment!!

She passed away in 2019 at the age of 59, may she Rest In Peace. I hope that school’s administration gets shut down and arrested for this heinous act of cruelty. It’s literal child abuse what they’re doing to these children. On top of that it’s classist. Her acts of kindness will not go quietly, she was a hero and she did not deserve this.

Like there are hundreds of children, a meal could cost like what, 15-20$ for a kid, then that would make the total be thousands, and that's just food alone. And since it's not a business which usually makes hundreds of thousands to even millions, of course they have to strictly prohibit such action more than a business.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I was homeless before and I owe the lunch lady at my school my life. She made sure I was more than well fed and never judged me for not being able to afford the school food.

@@lokithegodofmischief4090 Mine was one of the highest ranked for bullying. We had a pretty high suicide rate from bullying several years ago. I don't doubt there are schools out there that don't tolerate it, but I hear way too many that just straight up ignore it. It's enough to warrant looking into.
A lunch teacher back in elementary used to give me extra food and she would buy me cupcakes and other things. I’m forever grateful for her.

It’s not necessarily a snitch. When a school, or a shop does inventory, they can see how many food items they have left compared to the previous day, and how much money they earned, and if the numbers don’t add up, they would know that people got free stuff.

I once gave away food instead of throwing it away (it expires that day). Got scolded. I broke the rules so I fired myself that week and never come back to that insudtry since I cannot see food being treated like that😅
My very first job was at burger king. In the morning we would make allot of breakfast sandwiches and if they were coming past throw out time I would offer them to people for free. I got in trouble but I just told them it was expired. Luckily my boss was decent
I worked somewhere where we had to throw away food too, and if we ate it, we were expected to pay full price even if it was just about to go in the trash anyway. Such a shame.

Kids should get a free lunch if they can't afford it. This just goes to show how much districts don't care about kids and instead just profits.
I didn't come from a wealthy family, to put it lightly, but the schools I went to provided free meals for students who couldn't afford it including myself. It was very commonplace and it was hard to tell who got free meals or who paid for them since we had school accounts with money that either the parents put in or the school system funded.
Its terrible that the kids who attended this school had to experience this and that the lunch lady was fired for giving what was needed.
As someone else noted, "This school has an extensive food program. They provide a free breakfast to ALL students and have free lunch options for ALL students. That's hardly a money grab. Of course when an employees decides to hand out free food to their grand kids, that hurts the program.

My mother retired after 27 years due to heart problems from being a school cafeteria worker. You wouldn't believe the amount of kids who are now adults thst have come up to her thanking her for doing this same exact thing. Whomever is still like this keep it going. You haven't an idea on how many people appreciate that later in life.

Well my classmates and I bring our own food to school mosty all of us in school including some of the teachers & our mothers just give us 20 philippine pesos(0.99 USD) per day, becasue our snack r not that expensive, and we sometimes go out to buy snacks in nearby canteens because sometimes we kinda don't like the snacks anymore and just go back to the campus, phones aren't allowed in our school too when it's class time, our teacher confiscate our phones and we are not aloud to go out in the campus if r parents didn't arrive yet but u can go out if u have a reason not stupid reasons, and in our school noisy cars & motorcycles aren't aloud and when it 's friday we have to be early necause we have a chapel hour and we have to have one representative of each grade for the games, and each friday their will be a whole class singing, kinda like a g-4 - g-12 reapeting, g-3 down aren't included, and we also have nutrition month, buwan ng wika(Filipino language month), and the other one I forgot what is it but we wear costumes or P.E. uniforms, and if christmas is coming we celebrate ir early in our school, but in each class, we have to pick a paper and the paper will have a name on it and we must not tell anyone except for the teacher and ourselves(but oc course our family have to know it too, and the gift's price must be 200 pesos up(9.93 USD), well we have wish list where u can write the gift u wanted and we also sing chrismas carols but we have a group and also ine winner we also have a few games, *sorry for sharing so much*, lolz......

The goal of all human civilization has been to make things as efficient and comfortable as possible. That's why we went from hunter-gathering to agriculture, why we went from superstition to science. Kids have a right to be spoiled, as do adults, at least in this part of the world. We have plenty of food for everyone, so it's pretty dumb to deny a starving kid food at school in a society as successful as ours. Being spoiled is a sign of a healthy society. A society where everyone, generally, has everything they need. If anything, people should be MORE spoiled. Demand more things, because we have plenty of recourses for all, just locked behind a paywall from many.

This is the exact opposite from all the lunch shaming that so many other schools have committed in recent memory. She did the "wrong" things for the right reasons, and I hope that she gets better employment elsewhere. That lunch lady is a pure soul. People just don't care. At my old job a teen said they wanted to commit suicide and ran off during work, so a manager took them home and stayed with them until they were calm, even called the crisis unit. And when the manager returned to work their job threaten to fire them...
The manager got to keep their job but they ended up leaving the following month. They didn't want to work for a company who didn't care for their coworkers.
Sadly they fired the same teen the manager was trying to help and the teen later ended his life a month later... Fuck people...

As a man that received free/reduced lunch as a kid. This lady is an angel. She accepts fault and even payed out of her own pocket and she is rewarded with unemployment. What is the message this school is sending there students?

I suspect the message is that you are not free to give away inventory that does not belong to you... because this is theft. There are programs in place, and I suspect you were in one of these programs. That's great. These programs are awesome and most people (myself included) are happy to pay into them, but there are some people that will abuse them; they do need to be monitored. If she did indeed want to pay for these kids' meals she could have done that up front by putting her own money into the till. She did not, but instead offered to pay restitution once caught. What message does it send to kids if we say you can do whatever you want so long as you admit guilt once caught? This is a terrible message. I don't see how spending other people's money makes someone an angel, it makes you a thief. Also... *their. ;)

My mother worked full time 2nd shift, but she got up early every morning and made me a healthy and nutritious lunch all the way through high school, she didn't trust the food served at school. I was involved in a youth ministry with high schools in south LA. They kept the free lunch program going during the pandemic even though though there was no in person classes because the school districts knew that some kids would not eat without that program. This lunch lady is a true 🦸♀️ hero. Food insecurity is real

Well, you can't put someone in a prison cell and don't feed them. That'd be even more cruel.
As someone who was in a jail that did contracts with nearby counties for us to perform free labor, we only got three meals M-F. We had weekends off so they only fed us breakfast and dinner on off days. If you couldn't afford commissary to have your own snacks for lunch, then you had a nap for lunch. I tried to share what I was able to buy, but my family was only able to send $20-30 a week. Most toiletries were provided, but you had to buy your own shampoo and it was like $7 a bottle :/ They really jack prices up just because they can.

These children didn’t even choose to be born into this world so why should we force them to pay for stuff at school when we put them there and force them to be there in the first place

@@emmieprzybylski5182 That is not right LOL, my school has free lunch for EVERYONE AT THE SCHOOL, you don't have to apply or anything grades 7-12 get free lunches and that goes for other districts here as well. We have money for everything we need like renovations and such, and we arent even a wealthy city.

Schools get enough in grants each year through the standardized testing they make the kids endure year after year. Also, the school lunch costs $2. How expensive can it really be to feed each kid when half of them pack lunch anyway lol.

I think this is in Delaware. And to think that not far away, in Washington DC, there are people paying $1000.00 a plate for fancy dinners. They probably throw alot of food away after these dinners..... and it's not pizza and cheese sandwiches. It's just not right.

There was a lunch lady at my school when I was younger that did this same thing. I was one of those kids. I can’t thank her enough for what she did for us. I will forever be grateful for her.

Same here,my parents wouldn't let us get free or reduced lunches. You work for your food. She would charge me .5 cents for a meal. I remember "food insure kids" back in 60s. They had to work in(sweep floors, wipe tables,dump trays,etc)the cafeteria to get a free meal.
