Arguably one of Madness's most uplifting songs and videos. Released as a stand-alone single in 1983 it spent 10 weeks in the UK chart and peaked at #2. The action in the video takes place on a plane, in a plane, under a plane and with Suggs and Chas as the nutty pilot and co-pilot. When the band aren't playing their instruments or engaging in food fights on board, they're forming a seven-man gospel choir on terra firma. Look out for one of the most rock & roll endings to any video, when a large white van takes a parachute jump.
Lyrics:
Take time for your pleasure and laugh with love
Take the hand of another and sing for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Look up at the rooftops (roofs) when you're walking round
Don't think for a moment (roofs) of looking down
Whoa, whoa, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Look up at the rooftops (the roofs) when you're walking round
Don't think for a moment of looking down
A room at the top (roofs) where we're not allowed
Cheer to the echo (roofs) can you hear the sound?
Whoa, whoa (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (for the wings of a dove), yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah (for the wings of a dove), yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah (for the wings of a dove), yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah (for the wings of a dove), yeah, yeah, yeah
Whoa, whoa for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa (blue train), for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove
Whoa, whoa, for the wings of a dove

I miss old London so much
Our Governments have a LOT to answer for!
So do all the English.
@@pauldonnelly8659 Piss off. Punishing the modern generations and robbing them of their mostly positive cultural history is not an appropriate response for something that those generations had no control over.
@@pauldonnelly8659 oh piss off you twat. don't bring that talk here.
london is still great, you just enjoy the fun, younger parts of it less as you age
This can’t be 40 years old!! I still love it to pieces. ❤️
It's just brilliant
Madness have always enjoyed themselves whatever. A great bunch of down to earth lads that never let fame go to their heads.
Very underrated song writers & musicians.
tbh i'm a bit tired of reading that "underrated" thing under every video on yt. :) they got a lot of well-deserved fame, more than any other 2-tone act and ska bands before them who paved the way. they were in tv shows, they had huge chart success, everyone knows them even today. think they can't complain.
i fully suscribe to the first two sentences. they're not only brilliant musicians, it has always been and still is so much fun to see them. will never stop listening to their records.
Very ✌❤👌🎼🎸🎶
The word "underrated" has become one of the most overused words / phrases online
@@fugazi_ Yea, I reckon Thorny Boy must live in a cave on the moon or summat. I wonder what his internet connection's like?
@@roylennie8117 Well, maybe he's got a point. They're so underrated they don't even get to get booked for club venues anymore. So in sheer despair, they have to play family concerts on the windy roof of Buckingham Palace. 😉
Lived in America during the 80s when this was released. They just didn't get Madness and their humour. They could watch this video and there would be nothing, no smile, no foot tapping nothing. Pleased we didn't have to share them with the Americans tbh. Madness are and always will be England's finest. One of our own.
I was in America loving Madness (including this song) back in the day. I could tell there was British stuff in the lyrics I couldn’t fully appreciate, but I loved their albums and knew they were something special!
I saw them perform at The Palace in Hollywood California in 1984. Everybody (including me) loved them. I don't know what part of the US you were in but they were popular in Los Angeles.
So you lived in America, but didn't want them to be popular there? Even though they might have toured the US with more popularity? Didn't that hurt you back then? I feel like you were trying to show up Americans for being parochial, but showed your own parochialism is far worse. Pettier. Smaller.
@@Treadere Think he was trying to say Americans don't appreciate the humour of British bands like Madness. The fact that you have taken offence shows he is probably right.
I’m American,, I love Madness AND the Toy Dolls !! 😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
Was walking up the precinct the other day and an old bloke about 60-70 came around the corner with a pair of headphones on these kind 🎧 singing this classic reminded me to add it to the playlist 😂
This band wrote really good clever songs
I think they are underappreciated
Actually Suggs and Cathal Smyth (Chas Smash) of the band wrote this.
@@dominicallen9511 oh, do tell, who did then ?
Same title. Different song.
They are much beloved by many, not underappreciated
There is no one like Madness
DITTO TO THAT AWESOME COMMENT
This song was one of my favs when I was a kid and still is 40 years on. No racism BS, just , music n love for each other. I wish the world could be like that again.
I'm playing this for my colleague, Nick, who passed away two weeks ago and his funeral was today. This was played for him as he was a huge fan of Madness!! RIP Nick xx
Suddenly, I'm really hooked on this band. Gonna check out their discography!
Welcome aboard… 👍🏻
Go see them live, like yesterday !!!
I have been in love with this group especially Suggs since 1979
Good for you
bet you’ve danced your socks off since 😀
Madness are Madness, I don’t think we will ever see another band like them. Their music will never die for me, Long live the Nutty Boys!
Spot on 💯👌👏
Saw them tonight they really paid homage to their foundations and Jamaican reggae and ska roots SUGGS you're a legend
Oh My Dear Lord, can u imagine being in a plane flown by Suggs and Chas Smash? It would be terrifying! LOVE 'EM!!!
The van might have had a softer landing than the plane.
would be like a ride in the house of fun
AND - wasn't it a HS-121 (aka) Trident Mk. III?
1983 I was 17 a painter and decorator thick. Fast forward 37 years and no change only the music now is depressing to match the times we live
This has been my favourite band since I was 14 years old. I have seen them live a couple of times and I never get enough of their music. Now I have my grandkids into them as well. Their favourite is One Step Beyond. Thanks Boys for bringing back so many memories of the 80's everytime I listen to you's
I love the part where Suggs sticks his white gloved hand out the window and waves it as if it is a dove wing! Classic song; classic Madness! I hope they come back to San Francisco!
Still loving it in 2023,madness forever 🏁
2024 still listening
Madness just rule, most unique sound of any band out there!
YES! They have funny serious and just amazing songs!!!!
This is what joy looks like if you are old, if you ain't, keep watching...
This may well be my favourite Madness song
The peak of Madness’s career right here
I bought this song for a life long school friend for his birthday way back when ...
Remembering Kev Pawlett ...
RIP MY LOVELY FRIEND ...
55 FOREVER ❤😢 XX
For sure my favourite Madness track as I love its steel pans and upbeat sound. I love Cathal on lead vocals with Suggs. I was born in the same hospital as Cathal and grew up in the same area as him too!! Growing up in and around Camden i drank in all the pubs of the area as a young person!…..some good times.
Madness make me feel good to be alive!! Wicked!
this was music back in the 80s...hear every word no cussing ..and not the same ole thing..brilliant band
There was loads of shit music in the 80s. There’s loads of great music now. I wish you people would fuck office with these stupid comparisons.
Hahaha, name some great music from now Jayfive 🤔
If you say Cardi B ima cry
@@TheDanno34 you ever heard of rainbow kitten surprise or Manchester orchestra (not an orchestra) I mean if your just on about pop then sure there’s some stuff that ain’t amazing. Maybe Scandinavian artists. They seem to be quite decent and all around good bands/ solo acts
Every era is brilliant when you look at it through rose coloured glasses.
The 80s wasn’t a bastion of taste or good music by any means.
Personally for the sheer number and range of great music I think the 60s is hard to beat.
I got an original 45 of this.... and on the run-off at the end of the A side.. lightly scratched into it during the pressing of the record, its says. "Look up at the roof tops"... and then on the B side on the run-off is says " At the arse of a crow!"
Not many people know its there and you have to hold it at the right angle to the light to read it :-D
that's the great thing about the original vinyls. the etched messages
:-D
....and for years I thought I was nuts, the only sod who knew!!
Easter eggs done right!
Love it............Thanks, Bless and Happy New Year............
Legendary band in my peepers. Comedy, ingenuity, musical talent and seemingly down to 🌍. Great they are all alive still and seemingly doing fino😊
Got my 1st crew hair cut before I started Junior School because of these Cockney Scoundrels. I elevated to drain pipe jeans and Harrington Jacket by 12yrs old. Started with One Step Beyond, advanced to Baggy Trousers, Last Boat To Cairo was introduction to Pith helmet whilst daedecncing in a circle having a laugh...House Of Fun.... loved it. Good Morning Miss started it and I wished it never ended! Tune! . My Madness moment came...Our House. I lived in the middle of a street and my Mum was always house-proud. Nobody can ever take that away. Btw....moved since but that's irrelevant. cough!
I saw this band perform on a tv show called Benidorm and I was like I need their songs. This is my favourite by far
30 years too late but better late than never I guess.
When your on a "downer" just stick this classic on by the greatest band ever and you will instantly be HAPPY
Loved this for years, but I've literally just found out that it was madness! Oh that just makes it all the more awesome.
Me too! Just now with Paul Gamboccini, pick of the pops.
I just said to my sister that I thought it was the Kinks!!
I told to her that Madness is getting higher and higher in my book of Great Groups
♥️🥰🇯🇲🏴🕊️🔥✝️
You just got to laugh every time u just listen to madness i absolutely love the harmonies on this track wings of a dove ...there will never be another group like madness the best ORIGINAL group for decades and decades
Their songs are brilliant and the videos just makes the song even more powerful thank you each member of madness without you there would be no laughing in this music industry thank you thank you
Their second highest chart hit, number 2 in the long hot summer of 1983. Kept off the top spot by the mind numbingly boring Red Red Wine.
No one robbed Red Red Wine it was giving to UB40 from Neil Diamond
@@odemu2074no one’s saying red red wine was robbed you tool
They were 2 in the top 10, a number on a list
I really miss uptempo, upbeat music.
....and that was a crime
White ladder holds very special memories for me, it was the album my now wife and i used to listen to when we were dating, we'd fall asleep in each others arms listening to it. What a album and what a voice still listening all these years later
Have met these guys a few times and they are lovely guys
brilliant remaster!! it looks very colourful and clear
I love the bit in the back of the van the stuffed Eagle bird attacks the Madness geezer , whatshisface! Goodness! 🐕 lol 🇬🇧 😆 🤣 😂 😹

Lovely @carol Evans!
Always having fun, good catchy choons and typically British! love them
Always one of my favourite Madness songs since I first heard it back in the eighties😎
I came here because of my dad bringing me up with frakking great music- will always love the nuttiest sound around! Long live Madness!
People back then were so cool
"10 Things I Hate About You" Keeps sending me here; It's a comfort movie
NICE VIDEO !!! Their music has always made me feel so HAPPY !!! ✈️
Very very strong Caribbean influence in this song.
Parasmunt they were hugely influenced by Jamaican dance hall stuff , like all ska type stuff ,madness were more accessible to the masses than most ska bands hence their success, though funnily enough rumour has it that 'bed and breakfast man'was about ian from skrewdriver a right wing skins band
Parasmunt I thought it was about a family who's daughter dated a black man "your not to see us no more"
Tfi Friday double album
@@traditionalskinhead1544 the song about the daughter date with a black man is "Embarrasment"... she was de Kix' sister if I'm not wrong.
chas has a really good voice
So awesome that he saw the choir on tv and decided to write a song about them!
Probably one of my favourite Madness songs.
Can never be beaten or replaced.....superb!!!!!

They always play this live and ITS SUCH A BANGER I ALWAYS HAVE IT STUCK IN MY HEAD
Old songs are so much better than modern
50 years ish still great )
Sounds of my child hood right there, classic use of calypso bringing together Afro Caribbean vocals, perfect 😎
Would've loved to be on that plane, with that on flight entertainment
Superb intro! They're utterly charming. And musically, they can do no wrong.
one of Madness best songs so catchy
They are amazing in concert. I can't begin to describe it. Just go if you have the chance.
Just discovered this song, heard it on the radio [Radio X Chris Moyles Platinum Hour] love it. What a glorious happy song on a Friday. Love love love it
The best Madness song ever - and that sets the bar (very, very high)! Thank you.
I just remembered this song today, after so many decades!
Love, love, love this song so much. Its my favourite Madness song ever xxx
Always cheers me up. Mental video, but perfect song and video to sum up madness, love em always 😉😁
Beautiful harmonic progressions, typical of Madness. Love them.
What a load of xxxx....
Just how surreal is that?!
Joyous brilliance.
Madness boys need a giggle after a very hard day. UK 🇬🇧
Omg! I went to a wedding. 25 years ago and this song was on the couples wedding favor CD and I loved it. I don’t know why (bc he had no taste in music) my ex ended up with the CD. I finally found this song again. Cheers to Chuck and his bride! I hope you’re still going strong!
Loved this song all those years ago... and here I am in 2021 with a huge grin on my face :-)) That's got to be some kind of ... Madness!!
awesome song! Take time for your pleasure and laugh with love.
I have been listening to madness all of my life
I put this song on my must-play list at my wedding last week, I was so pumped when it came on. Absolute banger
We never had it so good
haha forgot about this classic, love it!!
Great song one of my favourites from madness 👍
Saw them play this live last night, still brilliant
Good mood. ACTIVATED!
Could we please have this classic Remastered in 1080p
just was today!
Brilliant is all I can say - great in their time indeed - but their music will last forever
I can't stand modern music so I listen to Madness.
They rule!
edit: I've kinda changed my opinion on this lol, it's okay to dislike modern music but I've realised that there's some good stuff out there, it just takes a while to find it
I always did like them (and I was about twelve when America caught on to them), but had no idea how brilliant they really are. I've been listening to my husband's records and anything else I can find, and I like them best of all the 2 Tone bands.
...They sound super modern to me...
You should listen to new ska. I can recommend Francis Vace.

Absolutely 1st class...
absolutly brillant song and video.remember going on holiday in 80s on a dan air comet.same as the one in video
Everything bar the kitchen sink is thrown into the production of this single. Missed out by a whisker of being their 2nd number 1. Having performed the sun & the rain on their uk tour earlier that year (83) everybody was expecting that to be the next single. That came later. This song was a total & brilliant bolt out of the blue upon its release. Totally fantastic!
Yes,the Sun and the Rain was the next single after this, which got to number 2 at the tail end of the summer of 1983.
Ralph Jackson Number 5 I think you’ll find, it would also be there final top 10 hit.
@Nigel Day house Of fun was number 1, Driving in my car number 4.
