I'm playing this for my colleague, Nick, who passed away two weeks ago and his funeral was today. This was played for him as he was a huge fan of Madness!! RIP Nick xx
Madness have always enjoyed themselves whatever. A great bunch of down to earth lads that never let fame go to their heads. Very underrated song writers & musicians.
tbh i'm a bit tired of reading that "underrated" thing under every video on yt. :) they got a lot of well-deserved fame, more than any other 2-tone act and ska bands before them who paved the way. they were in tv shows, they had huge chart success, everyone knows them even today. think they can't complain. i fully suscribe to the first two sentences. they're not only brilliant musicians, it has always been and still is so much fun to see them. will never stop listening to their records.

Was walking up the precinct the other day and an old bloke about 60-70 came around the corner with a pair of headphones on these kind 🎧 singing this classic reminded me to add it to the playlist 😂
Lived in America during the 80s when this was released. They just didn't get Madness and their humour. They could watch this video and there would be nothing, no smile, no foot tapping nothing. Pleased we didn't have to share them with the Americans tbh. Madness are and always will be England's finest. One of our own.

I saw them perform at The Palace in Hollywood California in 1984. Everybody (including me) loved them. I don't know what part of the US you were in but they were popular in Los Angeles.

I was born in the same hospital as Cathal and grew up in the same area as him too!! Growing up in and around Camden i drank in all the pubs of the area as a young person!…..some good times.
White ladder holds very special memories for me, it was the album my now wife and i used to listen to when we were dating, we'd fall asleep in each others arms listening to it. What a album and what a voice still listening all these years later
This has been my favourite band since I was 14 years old. I have seen them live a couple of times and I never get enough of their music. Now I have my grandkids into them as well. I got an original 45 of this.... and on the run-off at the end of the A side.. lightly scratched into it during the pressing of the record, its says. "Look up at the roof tops"... and then on the B side on the run-off is says " At the arse of a crow!" Not many people know its there and you have to hold it at the right angle to the light to read it :-D
That is comet G-BDIT, the registration is just visible at one point. It was filmed on the ground at Blackbushe Airport. I had just got back from a flight and put the club aircraft I was using (I think G-BHVN) in the Three Counties Aero Club park when I noticed the band and the crew. I am in fact standing a a few yards behind the camera crew watching the fun, and never appear in the video.
Got my 1st crew hair cut before I started Junior School because of these Cockney Scoundrels. I elevated to drain pipe jeans and Harrington Jacket by 12yrs old. Started with One Step Beyond, advanced to Baggy Trousers, Last Boat To Cairo was introduction to Pith helmet whilst daedecncing in a circle having a laugh...House Of Fun.... loved it. Every era is brilliant when you look at it through rose coloured glasses. The 80s wasn’t a bastion of taste or good music by any means. Personally for the sheer number and range of great music I think the 60s is hard to beat.
Everything bar the kitchen sink is thrown into the production of this single. Missed out by a whisker of being their 2nd number 1. Having performed the sun & the rain on their uk tour earlier that year (83) everybody was expecting that to be the next single. That came later. This song was a total & brilliant bolt out of the blue upon its release. Totally fantastic!

Parasmunt they were hugely influenced by Jamaican dance hall stuff , like all ska type stuff ,madness were more accessible to the masses than most ska bands hence their success, though funnily enough rumour has it that 'bed and breakfast man'was about ian from skrewdriver a right wing skins band
Remember going into Woolworths in Barnard Castle aged 11 when this came out to stare at the single sleeve. I thought this was the greatest song I had ever heard 👍
I used to listen to this song on Top of the Pops as a young toddler. Every time it came up, I used to dance to it. And only remembered the "Whoa - Whoa." After growing up, I occasionally, I used to search for it offhandedly, never found it. I just did. :) and I still love it.
Such a great tune. I wish they had even more agency to do more music. They show more class than those of the 'upper class,' which should make everyone think...a lesson for humanity.
