The song that provides the opening salvo to Madness' 1979 debut album of the same name. Who can forget the first time they heard the immortal, booming words of Chas Smash commanding "Don't watch that, watch this!"? The song is still the opener for nearly every live show they play; a veritable, instantly unifying call to arms for casual and die-hard fans alike. The video finds the boys at North London's Hope & Anchor pub, where they played many of their early gigs.
Lyrics
Hey you, don't watch that, watch this
This is the heavy heavy monster sound
The nuttiest sound around
So if you've come in off the street And you're beginning to feel the heat
Well, listen buster You better start to move your feet to the rockinest,
Rock steady beat of Madness.

At least in the top ten.

You know that a song is such a massive national classic when the sound of thousands of people singing along to the saxophone theme is more iconic than the saxophone theme itself.
I showed this video to my 17 year old son and he was blown away. Long live Madness!

Someone really should make a lyric video for this song.
its a copy of a tune by Prince Buster & The All Stars ..which is also excellent
I remember at the time, being in college in 1979, a gang of girls got on the college steps and called out "Hey you! Don't watch that, watch this" and did the intro all the way through, then the rest of us joined in singing "Na na naaaaa, na na na nana" Great days lol

This song has to have the most iconic spoken intro of all time regardless of genre.

@@brendanagy6205 May I respectfully suggest that your view is not held universally? I understand that you have trouble moving due to your personal medical issue and empathise from experience of my own personal medical problems, but I will also say from personal experience that I am able to occasioanally transcend my limitations to fully enjoy dance movement like that. I am limited due to a potentially deadly cancer that I survived due to exceptional medical treatment. I developed fibromyalgia due to the stress of either the treatment that saved my life, or the trauma of the original illness, or posssibly a combination of both those events. Following that I suffered an accidental spinal injury that without emergency medical intervention would have seen me paralysed from the waist down. I've been extremely fortunate that timely medical intervention has saved me from paralysis or very much worse. I thank my lucky stars daily that this happened for me, and try to enjoy as normal a life as I can manage. Sometimes it is a difficult effort as it causes pain that I never experienced before my illness or injuries, but I never regret the effort it costs me as the payoff is briefly experiencing life as it was before I fell ill. I will keep putting in the effort as long as I live, and as long as I have strength to push back against my limitations. I would never suggest that someone should fight so hard that they worsen their health to push themselves toward recovery as that would just be selfish and stupid, but I can suggest that someone could exceed their own expectations if they have competent medical support. I listened to such support and found myself in a better place becuase of it. It is up to the individual to determine if their support is competent. Good luck to you Brenda, I hope your medical support can help you to improve your own personal situaton.

That was the 1950's with McCarthyism. Unfortunately McCarthy was on the right track, but didn't appreciate the true s ale of what was actually going on. Despite what KGB Defecters were saying was happening, the true scale of the problem was only revealed after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the release of the KGB Papers. Turns out Posterity owes Mr McCarthy a very humble , and long overdue apology. My ex KGB friend reckons it might take up to another 50 years before the infection is completely eradicated in the West, as the Sleepers Die Off.
