Honestly, some authors deserve more credit than we actually give them. The way Suzanne tied everything together, and all the songs, and the way she wrote the characters. Idk if I’ve ever been so fascinated by characters like this before. I think she did a brilliant job!
I just spent my entire week reading the trilogy again after finishing The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and I cannot agree more. As I'm reading and making even more connections than I already did with the prequel, I couldn't help but feel this happened in real life lol It felt like she had the prequel already planned out prior to THG. The books are so well written.
Could you make a video theorizing what would have happened if Haymitch went into the quarter quell with Katniss? I thought I would be a interesting video, since it almost happened and would have created a whole different story. Thank you love your videos!
I personally believe that Maude Ivory was Katniss' grandmother and that Coin could've been Lucy Gray's child after she made it to district 13. I especially see it in Coin's final speech before Katniss is suppose to finish off Snow. We've never seen Coin be so theatrical so maybe she was reveling in her mother's memory and spirit before avenging her. I believe that maybe they did have music when Coin was growing up. But after her daughter and husband died (and probably Lucy Gray too) from the small pox epidemic in 13 she could've grown cold, not seeing a reason to continue having music or celebrations. Although I do believe that the gray suits in 13 is a textile conservation situation it could also be a constant reminder of what Coin's fighting for, for Lucy GRAY.
Coin could be Lucy Grey's grand daughter . Coin was fiftyish. not in her fiftys she could have been late forties. If Lucy Grey's child had coin at 16.That child (Coin ) would be 48 At the time of the 75th Hunger games
First two theories required a lot of suspension of disbelief imo but this one is air tight. Never would have considered it but it makes sense and adds to the lore of the story without making it feel corny. Maude Ivory fits way better than Lucy Gray as a Katniss ancestor.
I have a feeling the Hunger Games What Ifs are around the corner. Here are my favorite ideas: - What if Gale was chosen instead of Peeta? - What if the 75th Hunger Games weren't shut down and ended normally? - What if Katniss killed Snow instead of Coin? - What if Peeta was rescued from the Quell instead of Katniss? Prim actually competing in the 74th Games would almost be a good one, but I don't see her making it past the bloodbath.
She might not but what if she befriended Rue and they taught each other their skills, together they wouldn't have ever done something as risky as to sabotage the supplies so they may have survived further, I don't think she would have won but still!
If Prim was in the Games instead of Katniss, I think she would tell Peeta about her older sister, which would have triggered that flashback of him tossing some bread Katniss's way, and he would vow to protect Prim or keep her alive for as long as possible. I also think the two of them forming a temporary alliance with Rue and Thresh would help them survive against the Careers (they know they will have to kill each other eventually, but in order to get there you first have to deal with the heavy favourites). In the original, Katniss killed Glimmer, Marvel killed Rue, Katniss killed Marvel, Clove failed at killing Katniss (just stab her instead of monologuing about Rue) which led to Thresh killing Clove, Cato killed Thresh, and finally Peeta pushed Cato into the pack of mutts below the Cornucopia. I would keep this format relatively the same if Prim was there instead of Katniss, except Thresh and Peeta would be doing most of the fighting unless they team up with members from other districts (Foxface would be a good ally for swiping supplies from other tributes, but they would need someone else to be the archer unless Prim does a lot of bow-and-arrow training in the days leading up to the Games, but I feel she would be better at striking from the shadows and with her knowledge of edible vs poisonous plants).
I always thought it would have been interesting to see Katniss and Peeta as mentors in the 3rd Quarter Quell, and what the twist would have been istead of having former victors competing.
I do find it interesting that we get a mention of Katniss’s maternal grandparents as the owners of the apothecary in 12, but nothing about her father’s side 🤔
I think that Maud(e) Ivory is Katniss’ grandmother, as she has the ability to memorise a song after hearing it once, and the Hanging Tree is one that Katniss was taught by her father, even though it was no longer permitted in District 12.
Let’s not forget about the house by the lake that Katniss’ dad takes her to sometimes. Could that be where Lucy Gray made a home? Close enough to 12 that she could go back if she ever needed to. Maybe meets a fella at the Hob? Has a baby boy at the house by the lake in the woods. That would explain why Katniss’ dad was so comfortable in the woods. He grew up there. That would be why he knew it was easy to enter and exit 12. That would be why he made it a priority to teach Katniss how to survive in the woods so young. Maybe Katniss’ dad lost his mother (Lucy Gray) at a young age and was forced to return to district 12 himself. Or while trading herbs and such, he fell in love with the daughter of the apothecary shop owners and decided to stay. Making Lucy Gray was her paternal grandmother.
I do think the existence of The Hanging Tree in both stories is conclusive proof that the Covey is related to Katniss in some way. I suspected Maude Ivory while I was reading. I'd love like, a snippet or novella from Snow's POV in the moments when Katniss specifically reminds him of Lucy Gray. Reading TBOS&S really does make you think the Rebellion was in the works for years and Katniss was the perfect Snow Distraction target.
I love the hunger games theories. I had wondered if Maude Ivory was Katniss’ grandmother and this totally makes sense. I love the idea of her dad’s last name used to be Evergreen.
Well, technically if he's Covey, the theory is that Baird is his last name. Evergreen would have been his "middle" name. But he might have dropped the Baird to the point that people forgot he had a last name. Ordinary citizens of District 12 didn't seem to have so many names. This also makes sense if somehow a "d" slipped into the name, and it got passed down to Katness like that.
@@keelanduffy6024if he was Maude Ivory's son he would be a Baird. If she had to raise him alone it would probably be his real last name too (I have my mother's surname, not my father's since they were never married). But even if it wasn't the last name he went by, it would still be in his blood.
I love how The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is so interconnected with The Hungers Games. Snow remember all of the songs that Lucy Gray sang as well. Some he never liked. And you know that the moment he heard of the District 12 girl's name is Katniss. He is thinking of Lucy Gray's explanation of the word. Therefore; thinking of Lucy Gray. And throughout The Hunger Game trilogy, he is being constantly reminded of her somehow, someway. Moreover, as we may have noticed in the prequel, Lucy Gray has a way of not letting Snow think clearly. So with Katniss unknowingly reminding him of his ghosts, with her name, with her songs, with her actions; Snow makes decisions and acts out accordingly based on his love and hatred for Lucy Gray. Why would Snow even bother to visit Katniss in her home after all? He made it very clear in the first book that he did not care for "underdogs." They are beneath him in his mind. I believe it was the Mockingjay pin that threw Snow over the edge. He had to know. Had to know if Katniss was related somehow. And thus began his downward spiral of decisions.
Also the mayor was after Lucy under the belief she killed her daughter. Which is one of the reasons she also left. Because if she stayed in district 12 he would have killed her. So not only would she have snow on her back but mayfairs dad (the mayor) as well.
My Theory: Lucy found District 13. There she got Asylum. District 13 saw her potential because they knew she won the games and all what she done because they watched it. So they made a plan to start a rebellion. Lucy Grays Son (Katniss Father) got prepared to go to the Reaping while the 50th hungergames got picked and shall start a rebellion while he was at the games. But maybe the capitol got to know the reaping should be manipulated and then they changed the system for the reaping and also picked the double of the people. While the games Lucys Son was in District 12 and met Katniss mother who is the daughter of maude ivory and a pharmacist. She was so sad that her best friend died that they came closer and fell in love. He decided to stay in district 12 with her. But he kept contact to district 13 via jabber jays and made a new plan. They wanted to keep on going with this. So Katniss father teached her everything he knew. To prepare her for the games (without that she knows about it) he also teached her songs president snow would recognize when she would sing it. One day one of the jabber jays got catched and they found out Katniss father has contact to district 13. they made the mine accident to k*ll him and leave his family for their own as a penalty they knew Katniss mother is emotionally unstable without him and the kids still too young but they didn't know that Katniss know how to hunt so they survived. District 13 still didn't gave up they still had others spys from the hub who watched Katniss grow. Her father never had the time to tell her the plan to send her to the arena. They knew when she was strong enough to go to the games and just get picked she would give up herself but they knew if they would pick prim that then Katniss fightmode will get actived. And also it will not be this obvious if a manipulated picking will pick a young weak girl. So they manipulated the reaping that prim get picked and the rest is well known. 😁
This is why I would love to read a book from haymitch games but not from his perspective From Katniss parents perspective whonare watching the games and everything what's happening before and after this.
I think that Lucy Gray Hung herself in the hanging tree and exoected Snow to join her. When Corolianus arrives at the tree he can, at first, not see her and then he suddenly does. Everything that happens after that reads like a fever dream. At the end of it he's suposedly made the trek to the lake back and forth, but when he gets back to the base his bunkmates hasn't even woken up yet.
The timing is a good point. The trek to the lake was meant to take hours, I specifically remember Katniss saying that Gale will be annoyed about wasting a whole day's hunting. But I disagree Lucy Gray would hang herself. It really doesn't seem like the kind of thing she'd do.
@@emilykeepsmiling9465 I agree that it seems very out of character for Lucy Gray to take her own life, and "going ahead" in a lovers suicide just doesn't make sense. But I also keep coming back to how "fine" Lucy Gray seems to be after the Hunger Games. I don't mind at all how the end is left open, but I do wish for a book from Lucy Gray's perspective
While I agree that a lovers suicide wouldn't be on character I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that she killed herself to protect the Covey. If she was worried that the mayor was coming after her she could've been worried that the Covey would be caught in the crossfire and she killed herself in order to protect them. Then she sang the hanging tree to either a: offer Corolianus a way out of his troubles too since she understood his pain/anxiety or b: to make sure he was the one who found her@@Taupod
@@Taupod we NEED a book from lucy's POV, not knowing anything of what happened to her, if she escaped, if she came back to district 12, if she ever even figured out that Snow killed Sejanus, or if Snow actually killed her ??? thats just such a disservise to such a great and incredibly interesting character, which quite frankly, was the best character of the prequel book
I'm so excited for the Hunger Games renaissance, especially because of all the awesome content coming from this channel. Ben and J are my favourite online fiction theorist and it's so cool to finally see them talk about a series I love so much.
I'm LOVING the Hunger Games content, and I've heard this theory before, though it was based solely on the (as I call it, because I have it, too) audiographic memory thing. That is the "you hear it once, it's in there forever" thing. Might take me a few repetitions depending on the complexity of the song, but it's a useful gift. I say "gift", not "talent", because I didn't teach myself to do this. I just can.
oh my god i have been waiting for someone to say this i have scrolled so far on so many comment sections and thought out the whole prequel i was thinking to myself “where’s the part where snow betrayed tigris and makes her hate him enough to be part of his murder” so thank you for that piece of mind 😭😭
My theory for that is just that overtime she sees that hes beyond hope. At the end of the movie she even says that he looks just like his father. I believe that after that moment she becomes scared of him.
Im convinced this theory is actually canon. There was enough evidence in the books and also i love that the covey continued to torment snow through katniss 😂
I love the current Hunger Games content! Keep it up guys!! BTW I think a what if series for hunger games could be really good... What if peeta died in the first hunger games, what if gale was chosen on reaping day etc...
I love how it all ties together. And considering the Author's clever writing style, it does seem like it is actually what she intended. Love it. Can't wait for more
Loving the Hunger Games stuff, I was into them a few months back and I was thinking about a lot of this stuff too. I think Coin could be Lucy's daughter, and could have been passed on lots of info from her mother. This would explain her completely diferent temperament, she'd have grown up hearing how Snow betrayed her mother and could naturally be more cold and contemptful. Definitely think you nailed this theory, even if it wasn't intended directly by the author clearly her muse was at work lol, the way all these details line up.
While I don't love the idea of Lucy going on to become the nefarious Alma Coin for various reasons, I think Katniss being a descendant of the Covey- Maude Ivory in particular- is quite probable. Also- I looked into the etymology of the name "Baird", a bit- originating in Scotland, & making its way to the general vicinity of the US where district12 is located within the context of the narrative. [occupational name from Gaelic bàrd 'bard, poet, minstrel', or of Gaelic Mac an Baird 'son of the bard'. History: This is the name of a PA (Pittsburgh) family which came to North America from Scotland via northern Ireland.] Interesting stuff, & I really like the idea of Katniss descending from Maude Ivory.
Weird thing I have noticed: the characters of the hunger games (Katniss,Peeta,Gale,Haymitch) have almost identical counterparts in the maze runner series (Thomas,Newt,Teresa,Minho) probably just a trope overlap but the comparisons are creepy to the point you could switch those characters to the other story and have almost the same outcome
I think that Maude Ivory was Katniss’s grandmother because she loved to sing like Katniss’s father and Katniss knew nothing about this because her father died. And because we never know what happens to the band it could definitely be possible that they never left and eventually all spent the rest of their lives there.
I love that there are so many comparisons between katniss and lucy grey like how katniss was a fighter forced to preform but lucy grey was a preformer forced to fight
I am really enjoying these videos with theories connecting the hunger games trilogy with the prequel. The prequel was fantastic and I love getting to see someone expand on it.
I’m very been a fan of the books and movies for several years, I am loving these videos, as I have considered some of these theories myself upon revisiting the story! Keep on the good work 😊
I think it would be really interesting when looking at all 3 super carlin theories together. If maude is karniss's grandmother and coin is Lucy grey (or Lucy's child, as some people speculated in the comments of that theory), then it would add weight to the theory that coin was watching katniss and wanted to use her in the coin's big plan theory. Coin wasn't just watching some random stranger, she was watching her family.
Theory with absolutely no support: Katniss' mom was Coriolanus' daughter... APRIL! Her name is never given, but she did grow up in the Merchant region of District 12, which is where Snow would have gone when visiting the district in the years after Songbird. He could have fathered a child there who became Katniss' mother. Then she grows up to take down both her grandfather and her grandmother's cousin, finally ending the fight between them.
@@emilykeepsmiling9465 Let me know if there is any. Haven't read it in a couple of years. I read it when my daughters got into the books. But that was my first time reading them ever. I was a teenage boy when they came out and I wasn't reading a lot of YA.
@@hannahdoesacting5820 I had forgotten. Had to look it up. She's barely in the books at all and only a slightly larger role in the films. Chapters 26 and 27 of Mockingjay where they talk about putting her in the 76th Hunger Games. May be something interesting there for the theory. But if not, she'd just be Katniss' cousin. They's at most a few years apart, a typical age difference for cousins.
Finally!!! I love this theory. I did think that Lucy Gray and Katniss were related in some form and my second guess would he through the couvy. Thanks for your HG theories they are soo fun
It could be but it doesn’t have to be that Mauve Ivory is Katniss‘ Grandma. I just think these songs could just spread like that easily in a small district like 12. even the „forbidden“ song Hanging tree. It is known. Because as far as I remember it, Katniss‘ mother just forbids Katniss to sing it. It is not that underdog that you say it is
This I fully believe could be what connects the two mains of the series, where as the Coin theory makes more sense for Lucy Gray to be Coin's mother than Coin herself
My husband and I theorized that maybe Billy had knocked up Lucy. Maybe she was pregnant in the games just as Katniss had pretended to be. Those games were so short that maybe she never knew. When she fled maybe she stayed and raised the child in the cabin by the lake. That child eventually went on to have Katnisses father. It’s all a stretch but really fun to try to make since of. This was a fun video!
The author confirmed that she's her paternal grandmother. Makes sense when you think about how she looks like her dad who looks like his mom and also the singing, the meadow, and the foraging for food. Plus makes more sense as to why Snow doesnt like her.
People keep saying that the author confirmed that Lucy is katniss's grandmother, but not one person can say where this happened. Not one person can mention the article or interview. It didn't happen. It wouldn't make any sense for her to do that and it doesn't make any sense for the story because then we would know what happened to Lucy.
@@meghannerger5591 I can't find the article anymore because I swear I found something on it but if you also look at how Katniss is described in the book it a very close resemblance to her being her paternal grandmother. She learned the song from her dad and there's a very good chance she lived and stayed in district 12. I was trying to find it, I think it was Vanity Fair or however you spell it
@@solsticebaby even if maude ivory was katniss' grandmother (which is most likely true) that would still not tell us anything on if Lucy survived or if she came back at all, unfortunately
I thought Lucy Grey made it to District 13 and married into the Coin family. Originally I thought she was Coin's mother, but Coin was too old for that if I remember correctly. But that was how Alma knew so much about Snow and how to play him. At least that was my thoughts on the matter
If Lucy Gray is Coin, this can perfectly lead into the theory that Lucy Gray is Katniss’ grandmother, I’ve heard a theory that Lucy Gray may have been pregnant with Snow’s child due to their affair, and she may have been too weak at the time to escape, so she would hide in 12 until the child was born, this child being Katniss’ father, and she would then just leave this child with the Covey before escaping to 13 and being presumed dead, because this child would be a burden to her and would drain her supplies, this would create Coin’s “survival of the fittest” attitude that she would keep for the rest of her life, after being forced into possibly sacrificing her own child to the mercy of the Capitol, rather than run off to the woods and have both of them starve, and could explain both the similarities between Katniss, and Katniss knowing about the hanging tree song, because Maud would be raising her father. This is a massive stretch, but hey, it’s just a theory, A BOOK/ FILM THEORY! Aaaand Cut/ Thanks for reading
I'm a 68 year old man, and I love The Hunger Games! And you're right on all counts. Maude Ivory is Katniss' paternal grandmother. No, Lucy Gray did not make it to District 13. It was hardly within walking distance. If Snow didn't kill her, she no doubt perished somewhere north of District 12. I also had the same idea about Katniss' paternal grandfather being named Evergreen. I believe he joined The Covey, and when the Capitol forbade music in 12, along with the use of color in one's name, he changed it to Everdeen. And one more thought. I believe the Goat Man, from whom Katniss bought Prim's goat, Lady, was the last surviving member of The Covey: Tam Amber! Great video!
I like to think that Lucy Gray is Greasy Sae. The names rhyme. The age fits. IF you go by the movie, it could be why she gave katniss the pin, because she knew that Snow hated mockingjays. However, if you go by the book, it doesn't fit. If you do go by the book, which i think that ship has sailed... Greasy Sae could have given the pin to Maysilee Donner due to the mockingjay, and it was passed to Madge, Madge could know the story and that is exactly why she was so adamant for katniss to wear the pin in the arena. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
If Katniss is related to Lucy Gray is not dependent on whether or not Lucy Gray survives that last encounter with Snow. Lucy Gray has two (from my understanding) biological sisters, and two adopted brothers. Any of whom are likely to have had children.
So I Googled if there were going to be any more Hunger Games related novels, and when I scrolled down a bit, I saw this: "Is Lucy Gray related to Katniss? I interviewed Suzanne Collins and asked about the relation between Lucy and Katniss. She revealed Lucy Gray is in fact Katniss's paternal grandma." I'd LOVE to read the novel that shows this family line. Plus, learn more about Katniss's father.
I saw that too, but the user's account was deleted, and there were no official sources saying as much. I think that this was a fan theory or something Collins thought of but changed her mind.
@@MacMiraa That's fair. I still love the implications that could be in play if it was true, though. If Ballad was going to be the start of a new trilogy, I'd love to know what happens to Lucy Gray. If she did become a mother to Katniss's father, and what his life was like. Though I know the point of the end of Ballad was that we're not supposed to know what happens to her.
Yeah, there is not a single source of Suzanne Collins saying that. Because Suzanne Collins wouldn't say that. Because even if it were true, which doesn't make sense, it would destroy the ending to her book which she's so carefully crafted
I like this one a lot more than your previous one. It doesn't need nearly as much suspension of disbelief, and it works much better from a narrative sense.
I love your hunger games theories! I’m glad you’re getting sponsors, but better help is not a great program, so it might be worth looking into how much you agree with their practices opposed to their concept.
What I love about this theory is that there’s so much evidence for it that there’s almost no way that it can’t be true. In my eyes, it wouldn’t really make sense for katniss to know the hanging tree unless Maude ivory is in fact her grandmother. Since the prequel was released, I’ve seen a lot of people talk about the idea of katniss and lucy gray being related, but this is the first time I’ve heard the evergreen theory-let me tell you, my jaw DROPPED when you read those lyrics. Although I will say that as perfectly as they fit, there are a couple of things that make me doubt that katniss’ last name used to be evergreen. First, when it comes to the covey naming conventions, remember that a covey member’s second name isn’t really their last name in the same way that “Everdeen” is a last name. The last names that we see the covey have are pretty normal (i.e. Clade, Baird) and don’t seem to have much to do with the way they choose their first and second names, so I don’t think the ballad/color combination would really apply there. The other aspect of the evergreen theory that makes me doubt it is that as amazing as it is that the “evergreen” ballad’s lyrics relate to the story so well, I don’t think the timing of it works. The covey pretty much only seem to deal with ballads that could be considered part of the Appalachian folk genre, and I don’t think the Barbra Streisand song is really considered to be part of that genre.
Many of just assume Lucy Grey died in the woods when Snow shot the rifle. That Kaniss is Maude Ivory's grandaughter. That Coin and Snow were distant cousins. Someday the author may reveal the truth.
I always love your theory's! Usually you tip me over and I must say it's almost airtight. I saw the movie this week and after I wanted to read the last few pages again since it has been awhile. My theory is that Lucy Gray could be Katniss's grandmother, because Lucy Gray only sings the line of "Where a necklace of rope, side by side with me" in the woods to Snow. He thinks she's taunting him with this new line. So that would mean Maude Ivory never heard that line, but Katniss knows it.
Thank you for doing a video on Katniss' relationship with Lucy Gray. After I finished the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I wondered whether Lucy and Katniss were somehow related. I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only one who saw parallels between the two.
I do like the theories on the covey being related, but then we need an explanation for why Katniss didn't have family after her father died. The Covey were family oriented. Her father should have been friends with the other Covey's children. Where were they? Where are Katniss' actual cousins?
it is a very unstable time. It so easy to be separated or lose a loved one in minute. So, we can imagine that Maude Ivory could have been the last of the covey's and she had to raise Katniss's father with or without Katniss's grandfather.
Is it possible that Maude Ivory, the youngest member of the Covey, successfully integrated into District 12 society but the rest of the Covey did not? The Covey clearly has a rocky relationship with the rest of the District, and would almost certain be more volatile without Lucy Gray. I can imagine some time after Ballad the Covey attempting to leave the district or being involved in a conflict with the district, leading to Covey members being killed, relocated and separated from the rest of the Covey, or escaping the District, but Maude Ivory either being spared because of her youth or, if it happened later, choosing to stand by her relationship with a District boy, and being ousted from the Covey because of it.
The life expectancy wasn’t long in District 12. It plausible that the remaining Covey Baird girls died in childbirth or disease. My grandfather was the only surviving child of an only surviving child. So that could’ve happened to the Covey Baird cousins. Katniss doesn’t mention any paternal family or paternal grandparents. They didn’t have doctors, but went to healers for health care.
I just finished reading ABoSaS a few days ago and I legitimately got goosebumps when Lucy Gray started singing the Meadow song. Can you imagine Snow’s reaction upon hearing Katniss singing the same song to Rue? I feel like that’s the moment he felt like he was being haunted by Lucy Gray, 64 years had gone by he still hadn’t gotten away with what he did. The Evergreen/Everdean theory feels a bit reaching to me, especially given that Panem seems to follow the patronymic naming convention of the modern Western world, but I do like the Maude Ivory theory. But I’d like to point out “rose” is the name of a soft pink color, so “Primrose” could very easily be a Covey name on the sly.
Thank you SCB!!! I absolutely love your HG content ❤ I have a couple of theory suggestions if I may: - Sejanus: what eventually pushed him over the edge and made him go into the arena? I think there would be a lot of interesting psychology to talk about here because, although he wasn't happy with the games from the start, he never tried to stop them. Until he did. What was the final straw? - Tigris: what did she do to help the Snow family survive the first war? It may not be suitable for your chanel, but there was one brief mention of women selling themselves and how Snow never thought she'd do that, but he had a small doubt. - Also Tigris: what happened to her between TBOS&S and Mockingjay? How did she feel about the Games and her role in them? Was she brainwashed to support them like everyone else in the Capitol, or was she scared to oppose? And what happened to make her so willing to assist in the attempted assassination of her own brother? God I hope one of these is picked up and made into a video 😁 May the odds be ever in my favour.
I honestly think at first she was sceptical but would help her "lovely" Corio. But I think after she was a Hunger Games stylist for a few years she began to see that Coriolanus is mad with power and isn't the same boy she knew. She'd probably confront him about it and that's why later she was shut out of Hunger Games. Because Snow being Snow still wouldn't kill his own family, so that's the most he could do. And after that it would just spiral into Tigris hating Coriolanus more and more, seeing him become this tyrant, and eventually would help rebellion to take him down. But that's just my theory
I would like to contest the statement that "If [Lucy Grey] doesn't survive the ending, she's not related to Katniss." Prior to this video, I thought the most likely situation was that Katniss is descended from Maude Ivory, who is a cousin of Lucy Gray, and thus Katniss would still be related.
I think this misunderstanding (people forgetting that related is not the same as being the direct grandmother) also may explain the "Suzanne Collins said Lucy is Katniss' grandmother in an interview" claim - Suzanne Collins could have said they are 'related' and the interviewer misinterpreted.
Curious that it's never touched on further, but the book spends an entire page explaining how Prim and her mother look different compared to literally everyone else in District 12. They have blonde hair and blue eyes, which Katniss admitted was abnormal for their people's features. What if the relation is through Lucy, from her and Snow? Who else in the district had blonde hair and gray eyes that could connect them to Lucy's legacy?
I love the theory that Maude Ivory is Katniss's grandmother. It just makes so much sense. I hope Suzanne Collins writes a novela or something about the Covey. I'd love that, especially if it confirmed this theory.

Love this theory sm! Definitely makes sense and lines up super well!
Agreed!
Oh yes, you nailed it with "without making it feel corny"! I couldn't find words for why I liked this theory so much but this is exactly it
I have a feeling the Hunger Games What Ifs are around the corner. Here are my favorite ideas:
- What if Gale was chosen instead of Peeta?
Another good one, what if Peeta was chosen for the quarter quell and haymitch volunteered instead
There has been a theory where katniss killed snow, it was actually quite sad
I always thought it would have been interesting to see Katniss and Peeta as mentors in the 3rd Quarter Quell, and what the twist would have been istead of having former victors competing.
I do find it interesting that we get a mention of Katniss’s maternal grandparents as the owners of the apothecary in 12, but nothing about her father’s side 🤔
I think that Maud(e) Ivory is Katniss’ grandmother, as she has the ability to memorise a song after hearing it once, and the Hanging Tree is one that Katniss was taught by her father, even though it was no longer permitted in District 12.
Yeah I don’t understand why this isn’t the most obvious answer. It makes sense way more than any other I’ve heard.
That was also my assumption.
my first time reading it, that was the assumption I made. just made total sense given everything we know about Katniss' father, and even her name.
@@violetembers330It's not obvious bc maude ivory's such an irrelevant character in hunger games
You forget maude ivory knew all of this too and knew the song. It's more than likely she is related to katniss
@@raedaily9854the covey weren’t all Bairds, just the girls. The boys aren’t related to them
Katniss said her favorite color is green.....
I just finished a video yesterday about this topic 🤦🏻♂️ was going to upload it on Monday
Yours will be better anyway so please still upload it
Also the mayor was after Lucy under the belief she killed her daughter. Which is one of the reasons she also left. Because if she stayed in district 12 he would have killed her.
So not only would she have snow on her back but mayfairs dad (the mayor) as well.
My Theory:
Lucy found District 13.
This is why I would love to read a book from haymitch games but not from his perspective
From Katniss parents perspective whonare watching the games and everything what's happening before and after this.
No. Just no.
@@MelissaW1103 your opinion, my opinion
@@samuelhealy7672 Ooh, that is a great point! Exciting! :D
These Hunger Games theories are so fun!!! 💕
I absolutely love this new fandom that was added to the channel's content! Any hunger games content you make is content I will watch
i just finished the ballad of songbirds and snakes and really wanted to see some content about so i’m very happy you guys are posting this stuff!
these videos make me want to read it again!
When Katniss spins on that dress I feel a decade younger and I cry.’
I just can.
I wish to have a theory about what happened to have Tigris hate Snow so much that she would join the rebellion to kill her cousin
oh my god i have been waiting for someone to say this i have scrolled so far on so many comment sections and thought out the whole prequel i was thinking to myself “where’s the part where snow betrayed tigris and makes her hate him enough to be part of his murder” so thank you for that piece of mind 😭😭
My theory for that is just that overtime she sees that hes beyond hope. At the end of the movie she even says that he looks just like his father. I believe that after that moment she becomes scared of him.
I love that you guys are acknowledging the strikes happening and following their requests!
Im convinced this theory is actually canon. There was enough evidence in the books and also i love that the covey continued to torment snow through katniss 😂
I hope the series can come back full force like before. I really love the movies
Love it. Can't wait for more
evergreens resist snow
wow these are details that i didnt pick up when i read the prequel and main books!!!
great vid
Everdeen
I love this franchise when is hunger game trivia quizzes?
YES!! 🎉
Love your HG theories! So much work and dedication! You guys rock😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely love seeing Hunger Games content, can't wait to see more in the future.
Literally had this theory on my mind since my first pass of Ballad! So happy to see this theory
History: This is the name of a PA (Pittsburgh) family which came to North America from Scotland via northern Ireland.]
Interesting stuff, & I really like the idea of Katniss descending from Maude Ivory.
Lucy Gray can't be Coin as she would have recognized Katniss' "Hanging Tree" song.
See, Coin would release these things of she was Lucy Gray, whom she is not or related to!!!
I love your Hunger Games videos!!! They inspired me to read them all over again♥️
Honestly don't know how you guys pluck these ideas straight out of where my mind went before the videos came out!
More, and I cannot stress this enough, MORE Hunger Games content PLEASE.
I’m loving the new Hunger Games content! I’ve always enjoyed the Harry Potter and Disney/Pixar stuff, but it’s refreshing to get content on HG.
I am loving watching your hunger games content. You guys are so awesome and I love your content. ❤
Oh my god I love this!!! It would be another reason Snow hated Katniss so very much. Off to frantically re-read the books for evidence of this now!!
@@emilykeepsmiling9465 Let me know if there is any. Haven't read it in a couple of years. I read it when my daughters got into the books. But that was my first time reading them ever. I was a teenage boy when they came out and I wasn't reading a lot of YA.
@@Sam_on_UA-cam I don't know if this affects the theory at all but in the original trilogy and the movies, Snow has a granddaughter
I love how you just took the discussion that fans had when the book came out and act like you "discovered" it
I am LOVING that you guys started doing the Hunger Games!!!!!
Really liking the HG’s content! Thank you!!
Love the hunger games vid I’ve been watching for a while and now you officially have made vids on pretty much all the fandoms I’m part of ❤❤
The author confirmed that she's her paternal grandmother.
Where did she confirm it? I can’t find any article about it
@@meghannerger5591 I can't find the article anymore because I swear I found something on it but if you also look at how Katniss is described in the book it a very close resemblance to her being her paternal grandmother. @@nicolewhite6030 That's because it was Maude Ivory. All of that still fits and it fits actually even better with it not being lucy gray.

I thought Lucy Grey made it to District 13 and married into the Coin family. Originally I thought she was Coin's mother, but Coin was too old for that if I remember correctly. But that was how Alma knew so much about Snow and how to play him. At least that was my thoughts on the matter
I love this theory so much, it makes so much sense, the clues pieces all togheter, I love it
If Lucy Gray is Coin, this can perfectly lead into the theory that Lucy Gray is Katniss’ grandmother, I’ve heard a theory that Lucy Gray may have been pregnant with Snow’s child due to their affair, and she may have been too weak at the time to escape, so she would hide in 12 until the child was born, this child being Katniss’ father, and she would then just leave this child with the Covey before escaping to 13 and being presumed dead, because this child would be a burden to her and would drain her supplies, this would create Coin’s “survival of the fittest” attitude that she would keep for the rest of her life, after being forced into possibly sacrificing her own child to the mercy of the Capitol, rather than run off to the woods and have both of them starve, and could explain both the similarities between Katniss, and Katniss knowing about the hanging tree song, because Maud would be raising her father. This is a massive stretch, but hey, it’s just a theory, A BOOK/ FILM THEORY! Aaaand Cut/ Thanks for reading
I think this is the best possibility it pays respect to both theories and I can actually see it
Oh my I love this theory too. I love all of your Hunger Games theories. Great work!
I am loving the Hunger Game's theories you are doing. Whether they are correct or not, they are still quality interpretations
Cousins* but yes, exactly.
SUCH good dialogue on these theories! Literally my thoughts coming to life
So I Googled if there were going to be any more Hunger Games related novels, and when I scrolled down a bit, I saw this:
"Is Lucy Gray related to Katniss?
I interviewed Suzanne Collins and asked about the relation between Lucy and Katniss. She revealed Lucy Gray is in fact Katniss's paternal grandma."
I'd LOVE to read the novel that shows this family line. Plus, learn more about Katniss's father.
I saw that too, but the user's account was deleted, and there were no official sources saying as much. I think that this was a fan theory or something Collins thought of but changed her mind.
Yeah don't automatically trust google
@@MacMiraa That's fair. I still love the implications that could be in play if it was true, though. If Ballad was going to be the start of a new trilogy, I'd love to know what happens to Lucy Gray. If she did become a mother to Katniss's father, and what his life was like.
Though I know the point of the end of Ballad was that we're not supposed to know what happens to her.
@@madethistocomment727 Ah, dangit. I was hoping to find it, cuz I'd love an interview that talks more about that.

I really like this theory, but don't forget that in the final fight, Lucy Gray sings The Hanging Tree and a bunch of Mockingjays carry it on
What I love about this theory is that there’s so much evidence for it that there’s almost no way that it can’t be true.
Love it that you guys do The Hunger Games videos! ❤
Many of just assume Lucy Grey died in the woods when Snow shot the rifle.
That Kaniss is Maude Ivory's grandaughter.
That Coin and Snow were distant cousins.
Someday the author may reveal the truth.
She said Lucy Grey is Katniss' Grandmother.
Keep them coming…… I’m loving these videos so much !!!!
Watching your videos on hunger games has me reading the books for the first time!
Thank you for doing a video on Katniss' relationship with Lucy Gray. After I finished the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I wondered whether Lucy and Katniss were somehow related. I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only one who saw parallels between the two.
Love this exploration of the HG Fandom. Can't wait to see what the next series is!
I love that you added the hungergames to the fandom. ❤😊
love the hunger games content! just putting in my two cents that i hope you continue!
love this so much, Katniss is then theoretically related to Coin if she is either Lucy or her daughter.
It’s possible the covey moved away and she stayed behind with her new family
The life expectancy wasn’t long in District 12. It plausible that the remaining Covey Baird girls died in childbirth or disease. My grandfather was the only surviving child of an only surviving child. So that could’ve happened to the Covey Baird cousins. Katniss doesn’t mention any paternal family or paternal grandparents. They didn’t have doctors, but went to healers for health care.
the old woman in the merchant that gave Kat the pin may possibly be a covey
I didn’t know how much I needed hunger content until we got it!
Thank you SCB!!! I absolutely love your HG content ❤ I have a couple of theory suggestions if I may:
- Sejanus: what eventually pushed him over the edge and made him go into the arena?
Story Diver already did a theory about what if Haymitch went in the games with Katniss in the 75th games or the 3rd quarter quell
Loving the content. Just finished book 1! Should've started with the prequal, since I already know the main story so well. Cant stop now tho.
I agree, it’s canon now. She’s Maude Ivory’s granddaughter!
Loving all the hunger games content!!
OKAY BUT YOUR MINI THEORY IS WAY TOO GOOD IM GONNA START TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT IT
Curious that it's never touched on further, but the book spends an entire page explaining how Prim and her mother look different compared to literally everyone else in District 12. They have blonde hair and blue eyes, which Katniss admitted was abnormal for their people's features. What if the relation is through Lucy, from her and Snow? Who else in the district had blonde hair and gray eyes that could connect them to Lucy's legacy?
love another content... about time we have some hunger game quizzes
I love the theory that Maude Ivory is Katniss's grandmother. It just makes so much sense. I hope Suzanne Collins writes a novela or something about the Covey. I'd love that, especially if it confirmed this theory.
Maude Ivory being Katniss’ paternal grand mother makes so much sense.
Suzanne confirmed it's Lucy who is related to Katniss.
i am in love with the hunger games renaissance!!!
