He looks like that, as you put it, because this was the era that artistry was more important than image. Music has not changed for the better. Phil Collins is a legend. ❤️
Agree agree..... Amazing performer Phil... He is not JUST a singer.... And if you pay attention to the lyrics, its not a smiling song...... I find this reaction very rude against an amazing performer......
Was over 80,000 in attendance at this concert including me. I traveled from the U.S. to France to be at this concert! He was a drummer, songwriter, with a voice. Phil is a legend! 1981.
Well because back in the days was not about appearence but about music, quality, and excellence, Phil Collins before being an accomplished songs' composer and a very good singer, was one of the best drummer in the world.
Why does he look like that?? Why do you look like you do?? Do you recognize Real Talent or someone's looks?? This guy is a Legend!! Yes and his pants are at his waist! No four letter words no auto tune, Just Pure 100% Talent!! Can you stand it??
Saw Collins in 2019...he was already stuck in a chair for most of the concert at that time...unfortunately has been unable to drum for several years now due to a back surgery gone wrong and apparently other physical problems. Still was great to see him live
The reason why he is serious specially in this song because he wrote this song when he was taking a break from Genesis and he was dealing with his divorce so yeah I would be serious too ...
Interesting interpretation of the song. This was a huge hit in 1981 and started his solo career. Eventually you realised just how successful an artist he was. An amazing songwriter and one of the best drummers of all time (google his solos with Chester Thompson..mindblowing). There's a serious relationship history to this song and why he was so serious in singing it. It had deep meaning. Listen to the lyrics. It's full of hate, emotion and retribution. His first wife left him in the late 70's while he was on tour with Genesis in the U.S. The lies, the lover. It's powerful stuff and why it resonated with a lot of people. It wasn't commercial but neither was most of Genesis's earlier material but this song was the start that eventually made him a star through the 80's,90's and noughties. He wore his heart on his sleeve and was 1 of the major reasons of his success. This concert was in 2004 in Europe. He was 53 at the time. It was his 1st single from his 1st release album Face Value and most of the material were about his life at the time after his separation including his 2 young children at the time. Ironically he left his next wife for his Swiss translater Orienne Cevey who was 22 at the time (Phil was 48). They since divorced and Phil is only a fraction of his old self after failed back surgery left him partially paralysed and unable to walk without a cane. He looks far older than his 71 years now. Quite frail and sad to see a great performer in decline so badly. Recently finished a tour with Genesis where he spent the show seated, his voice far from it's best. Genesis was one of the most progressive bands of all time. Listen to Supper's Ready for some amazing songwriting and creativity. but watch his drum solos to really see how brilliant this man was..worth the price of admission itself. His oldest son with Orienne Cevey Nicolas is 21 now and a very good drummer, touring with Genesis and on Phil's previous world tour in 2019. Drummer Chester Thompson and guitarist Daryl Struemer are both Americans. 2 of the best in the industry.
Phil was 57 when he did this concert & just as good if not better then when he was young...... He can still pack a house full.....He is an EPIC,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME !!!
This concert is true evidence of Phil's superpower. Think of it, playing drums while singing. That's 5 different rhythms you have to keep up with (2 hands, 2 feet, and the melody) all at the same time.
Phil's huge success over decades led to a jealous hate campaign from others in the industry, along with snobby comments of his being merely an 'easy listening' artist. It was like when an author who sells millions of books is criticized for only writing 'popular' fiction for the masses, rather than artistic literature which hardly anyone reads! Phil was just too popular for some people (much like what happened to the BeeGees in the 1980s...)
In The Air Tonight was a highlight in each of Phil’s solo gigs, it never started the show. Phil, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson are the only musicians to have sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and member of a group. There was a time in the 1980s when Phil was everywhere. He recorded with Genesis and solo, was on tour all the time, produced other artists’ records, even did some acting (for example guest starring in Miami Vice and starring in the movie Buster). That was the time when certain media started to mock him. He was referring to this time. You definitely should listen to Genesis, the best band ever.
This actually was in the middle of the concert. The set list is online. It was the 16th song out of 25 songs he performed (3 of those were in the encore).
he wrote this song in the middle of his divorce from his 1st wife who he caught cheating on him with their home decorator, whom had become a friend in a sense he thought !
i saw an interview with the three members of genesis and phil was asked why this wasent a genesis song. he responded i am sure i showed it to these guys...tony banks and mike rutherford both said in unison....no you didnt and of course the all laughed
The faster one walks, the more their arms naturally swing. Anyone who walks around extremely slowly keeps their arms at their side. This is an epic performance. It's always nice when the live performance meets or exceeds the studio cut.
Phil has sold over 100 million albums as a soloist and over 100 million albums sold as a member of a band ( Genesis). Michael Jackson has achieved this as a soloist and as a member of the Jackson 5 as well as Sir Paul McCartney as a soloist and a member of the Beatles. The fact that he sings and drums at the same time is truly amazing! I always worry he won’t make it to the drums in time. Btw this wasn’t the first song he performed at this concert.
This song was featured in a great scene from Miami Vice in 1984, check out 'Miami Vice - In The Air Tonight Scene'. The drummer (Chester Thompson) and Phil do a great drum battle, I believe it's from this concert.'Dual Cam - Phil Collins and Chester Thompson' Per wiki he sold 150 million records worldwide as of 2008
If you want him not being serious, watch Easy Lover (Live Video) with Phil Collins playing in tandem with Philip Bailey from Earth Wind and Fire. An insanely good done and shows his lighter side.
Ok guys... phil is one of only 3 people to sell 100 million albums as a solo artist,, and 100 million albums as in a group.... record still stands today 2023,,, tye other 2 people is Micheal Jackson snd Sir Paul McCarthy
Great react. You should DEFINITELY react to the early Peter Gabriel era Genesis (1971-1974). Special emphasis on the 1973 album "Selling England by the Pound."
Phil Collins has sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and 100 millions as part of the band Genesis! Only Michael Jackson and Sir Paul McCartney have that distinction as well!
Since we were on the subject. Today would be a good day to check out the living years by Mike and the Mechanics, mike being Mike Rutherford of genesis very timely a beautiful song
Phil Collins, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are the only 3 musicians that are in this 1 VIP class. no other musician has entered. can you guess what they did achieved?
Never have concerts like this today unless it’s the old bands still out their! FOREIGNER is STILL FIRE if you ever get the opportunity! Right now they’re touring with Tommy Shaw & STYX!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This was one of my favorite songs way back when and yes there was vinyl and Phil was a great drummer you should check out genesis God bless yes zz top and I love Elvis and if not for what he had to go through there would be no rock and roll so he deserves respect cause it was hell and I was there seeing it all
What a precious little hot house orchid you are. If you can’t take the constructive criticism, maybe react to some standup comedy. No auto tune in his music! Putin my A$$!
Had no idea you did a reaction to this tune/video! Super cool. Great to see Chester Thompson, Daryl Stuermer (a trmemendously-underappreciated guitarist - check out his solo recordings) and, of course, my friend Lee. What a band this was! A real shame that Mr. Collins had to retire. Thanks for this one!
I just watched another reactor hit PAUSE half way through the first measure of THE drum break. It damn near gave me a stroke. It was physically fucking painful!
There's a great 80s tune entitled "I Know There's Something Going On" by ex-Abba vocalist Frida Lyngstad - very similar groove, feel, and mood. Phil Collins on drums and in the producer's chair. Always loved that one.
I will agree to disagree on MJ vs Elvis but as a drummer always loved Phil Collins work and extraordinary ability to compose and arrange music, I mean come on, who let's a drummer do that? I know I have, but I was classically trained on other instruments and drumming was the thing I loved most. Still, Phil Collins, epic Gentlemen and Rocker!!!
In your mention, I’ve never heard a Drake song. I never will. Phil Collins is a god compared to any new artist, even ones I like. FEIW, CDs came into being in 1986. I bought this on vinyl in 1981. Re: First Song: No, this is most likely a finale to end the show. From the seventies on, I’ve been to over 1,000 live shows, with Phil Collins in my lived expertise twice in the 80s. I like his solo stuff much better than Genesis.
Drake did NOT pass him up on record sales! LOL The only ones to come close is John Lennon and Michael Jackson who have sold more records. Check out Genesis also. He and Peter Gabriel (also a wonderful singer) lead the band for the 30+ years they were active. Pretty incredible to be that good.
God has put his seal of approval on this song only because Jesus is getting ready to meet us in the air at any moment and that is called the rapture!!! Are you rapture ready??? 🌈🕊️🆙🕊️🌈

Love Phil! He is so awesome! I have his greatest hits CD and I still play in my car. Unfortunately, he's not doing well today! I will always love his music! 💖💖💖💖
this was in paris france - his first farewell tour and it wasn't the opening song, it was about half way through - the encore of 'take me home' is really worth reactiong too as well, though saying that, this whole concert was super worth watching

Ah love and a divorce would give birth to his solo career and this smash hit especially live performances of In The Air Tonight. Hit after hit after hit he dished them out. Same here, I seen him in Newcastle (UK) he was still fantastic and his son on the drums was really good, best concert ever went to.
Yep! He was very tense and serious. This song was written about his divorce and he definitely was not over it during this performance!
The reason why he is serious specially in this song because he wrote this song when he was taking a break from Genesis and he was dealing with his divorce so yeah I would be serious too ...

The song came out in 1981 and this live performance is from 2004 First Farewell Tour in Paris.
