Hi Dr. Cody. I'm a fourth year PsyD. student trained primarily in CBT. At one of my externship sites I was trained in the use of psychophysiological technology which I have begun integrating into my sessions with patients at a private practice I work at. Your video was instrumental in helping me make an informed decision on the EEG device I will use (FocusCalm). I'll use the FocusCalm headset in conjunction with HRV training as adjunctive treatment with CBT. Glad I found your channel!

I fully agree with the comments regarding the Muse electrodes. In the Muse 2, the front electrodes lose their bath, since this month of May (2021). In the Muse S, the side electrodes crack and lose contact. I'm testing one-sided self-adhesive copper tape, the repair works fine so far. I just ordered my Focus Calm, it seems more robust to me, sorry for my English, I use Google translate.
Greetings and thanks for the videos

I just ordered a Muse S gen 2 device. I already have a Muse S. But if I am going to wear it for its sleep enhancing capabilities, it is going to push the 10 hour battery charge. Also, if you already have a Muse S, there is a code that gets you 30% off the gen 2.

How do you like the Muse S compared to the Muse 2? I have the Muse 2 & I like it with mind monitor for studying my states & getting into focused hemisync with gateway process techniques & qigong. Muse 2 is pretty cool I've been reading on how you can customize it with extra electrode sensors from the USB port. I want to make a custom device.

Hi Dr Cody. Very helpful video, thanks! Does FocusCalm give you audio feedback similar to the Muse, or do you have to have your eyes open and looking at the screen to know how calm your mind is? The active feedback of the Muse seems to be a real plus. I'm also interested in Brain Tap and MeloMind - have you had a chance to look into either?

Thanks for this great video, Cody. Three sensors are enough for this device to work, if I understood it right. According to my own little experience, one (heart) sensor is enough for practicing meditation. Most EEG devices are biofeedback devices which help you to turn your mind inwardly, so they don t differ much in principle. But if you want a little bit more, hard scientific data are required. Regards, Peter.

I like the heart rate sensor meditation, and on my Muse S I'm using a few minutes of heart rate meditation to bring me down before switching to the EEG meditation and finding it very effective. however I find the focus created by the EEG biofeedback to be quite valuable, so I am liking the EEG meditation very much as the "main dish" of the Muse experience.. the Muse documentation states that it's good to leave a minute or so of time after you put the headband on before starting the EEG meditation so the electrodes can stabilize, and since the heart rate sensor needs no such stabilization time, I can do that right away while I'm waiting for the EEG electrode stabilization.

More confirmation that Muse 2 was a good choice. FocusCalm does look better designed, but I don't like the limited 3rd party support. Thanks for the tip of using some elastic cords to secure the headband. I just made a purchase for a set of them. They seem designed for sewing your own mask, but will probably work well regardless.

As Sadhguru says «if you become a bit concious, breath naturally becomes an awareness… breath is a beautiful device, which is on, as long as whe are alive.» This is the most affordable device on the market:

I just got started with Focus Calm, but it seems to me that these devices are made for different targets. I like to meditate using Muse 2 or Muse S. In other words, I am using it for personal growth in general. I am building concentration and other 'work related' skills with Focus Calm. Occasionally, I might use the go to sleep routines of Muse S. However, most of the time, a long hard day will send me to sleep. Just my personal use cases.

I have the Muse S and am very happy with it, and from what Cody says the experience featurewise is the same for Muse 2 which you mentioned. However the Muse S should be more comfortable due to its headband design as opposed to the more rigid framework of the Muse 2. since you have to buy the FocusCalm software for an extra hundred dollars, you're looking at $300 so in my opinion you're better off paying the extra $50 for Muse S at $350, if your interest area is on meditation like mine is. I haven't experienced the games for the FocusCalm so i have no idea about the value of that.

@@utubengh1 I agree that the Muse is better for meditation. I had a terrible time with Muse S and had to return it. It was nearly impossible to sync and did not fit me well.. Customer service was fantastic, and suggested I use safety pins to make it fit. No matter what I did, it would move on my head and also unsync overnight. Maybe I had a faulty unit. I have a Muse 2 and have no trouble syncing it and it's great for meditation neurofeedback. FocusCalm is great for different reasons. It super easy to use and I like the daily 3 part workout. 6 minutes of meditation, then a biofeedback game, then a game to help you develop focus while in a calm state. It is simple to use and understand. I also have a neorhythm that I am experimenting with, and an Apollo Neuro which I think is one of the best devices out there. It works!
