How to Grow ALPINE Strawberries from SEED to FRUIT
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2019
- A step by step guide to growing alpine strawberries from seed. Watch the entire process from January to July; from seed to fruit. Alpine strawberries are delicious little aromatic berries. They do not have the same flavor as normal strawberries. They are absolutely delicious and would make a great addition to your garden. I enjoy having them in my garden for little treats as I take a walk through my garden.

At last a video that shows the whole process from planting to harvest. Watched so many seeds go into soil with no updates. TY
Yes! I always want to have the end result shown as well. I make sure to do that in my videos. :)
@@NickandJulie so how long was it from seed to harvest? tnx
@@mavismoi1 You can see the months in text in the video. About 6/7 months from seed to fruit.
Yes, I've been searching for a while. Thankful I found this one
Love the alpine strawberry. They are strong and highly productive, the flavor is so special.
I love their flavor! Wish the fruit was bigger 😋
I agree with Potter Witch. FINALLY, a video that covers the entire process. Very clear narrative. Great videos. Many thanks.
Thank you so much Marjorie! Appreciate the feedback. :)
I ordered 9 different varieties of alpine strawberry seeds, so I appreciate this video.
Nice! That’s a lot of varieties! Happy growing and eating these delicious berries 😋
Wow I've never seen growing strawberries out of buckets like that. Looks really efficient! I have sprouted alpine strawberry seedlings in jiffy pots right now and now I want to try this method when I transplant them!
Yes, give it a try! the only thing I would have done differently is put a pipe down the middle with holes in it to water all the plants since the ones on the bottom did not get enough water.
@@NickandJulie Interesting, thanks for the tip!
This is the best video I have found for starting Alpine strawberries. Thank you for posting this.
You are so welcome!
I grow both Attila and Yellow wonder. I love both, but Attila really does live up to its name!!! It is a real garden conqueror!😉
😂 good one!
this video is really well done. kept my attention the whole time. i can't wait to grow alpine strawberries
Thank you so much! 😊 wish you success in growing your own alpine strawberries 🍓
Ooh such a great instructive video! I'm planting some seeds today.
Thank you! Hope your seedlings are doing great!

I love these kinds of strawberries! They're way sweeter and tastier than ones you get at the grocery stores
I totally agree!
They do?
@@kaalamankusinaatkantahan3487 Yep, they grow just like any strawberry. I think they're easier to grow too. They are teeny tiny, but they are so sweet and so good. I think they taste better than the big ones at the grocery store.

I like that you put holes all over the pots for more growing space, good idea. They taste really good and I also like that little bit of crunchiness from the seeds.
Thank you! I had to get creative to save garden bed space! It looks like it is working out well so far. I love their flavor. Looking forward to this summer for full production from these new plants now that they are more established. Have a great weekend!

I am just about to film my alpine strawberry sowing video, I will be very happy if it turns out half as good as yours... wish me luck
Thank you so much for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it :) I'm sure yout video will turn out great! I did not find them difficult to germinate.

Wild ones are taking over my flower bed!
I have some type of wild one either but they don't taste good. Must be some kind of different species. They spread so fast!
Beautiful
Thank you!
In the UA-cam i never saw best job with strawberry like yours, thanks for this
What a great video. I am on a month right now and my seedlings have been out for about three weeks after germinating and are still very small but looking at yours after two months makes me less worried. I think I will try you bucket method at least for a few, with the pipe down the middle you mentioned below. Thanks for the guidance.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! They kinda seem to stand still in growth for a bit don’t they? I’m curious if it the bucket and pipe method will work for you. Mine grew okay but the pipe would have been better to get water to the roots. Especially to the ones all the way at the bottom. Keep me posted how it goes!
Very nice ! I picked up some white pine berries last year they were calling them pineapple strawberries but definitely pine berry of some sort very sweet and taste like cotton candy ! This year I got some mignonette seeds and put them in dirt then into the fridge at the beginning of February and pulled them out on my birthday beginning of March and they all sprouted today !if they are half as good as the white ones I will be more than happy 😊.
Oh yes they will be delicious!
Detail us on the whole process and duration on growth, thank you!
Wow! Nice! I’ve tried growing diff strawberry varieties inside my home. BC i live in Maine, we really don’t get much of a summer. Winter seems to last us 9 months a year!!
But I love to garden ! So i grow a lot inside, IE potatoes, tomatoes in several varieties, sweet peppers and green peppers, Many Varieties hot peppers I grow lettuce, an array of different leaves…. That and a few others i grow on a reg basis.
However… I have always wanted to grow strawberries inside. I’ve retired bare roots in soil and hydrophobic. And I’ve tried seeds as well with soil and hydroponic. WITH NO LUCK!
I’m def going to give this a go! Wish me luck!
That’s awesome, we just left Maine yesterday. Spent 2 weeks exploring it. It’s a really beautiful state but I couldn’t do the cold for that long. Which part of Maine do you live in? definitely give these a try, they are small fruit but the taste is amazing. Love them!
Lovely video ty for sharing. I have ordered red ones and white ones, but what I like is the clever use of doughnut container as a seed sprouter, and your large pot with all those places to grow even more. Do you have a video on how you made that pot? Such a good idea
thanks David! no, I don't have a video made of that, I did get some footage but never edited it together into a video. Its just basically a bucket with those holes drilled in with a large drill bit spaced evenly. It worked fine, the only thing I would recommend is adding some kind of water reservoir in the middle maybe a soda/pop bottle with little holes in it or a pipe with holes in it and put it in the middle and water it through there bc some of the plants on the bottom would dry out. That is what I will do next time I make these. Thanks for watching!
@@NickandJulie Sounds like a good idea to me. TY
You did one bad ass job even better than the professors I know!
Thank you! :)
Dear friend nice way to grow Alpine strawberries and fresh harvest. I too harvest fresh home strawberries last week. 🌺🌹🍓🍓🍓🍓 big 1 like
thank you!
You are as pretty as the strawberries 🥰 I am attempting growing Alpine strawberries (Mignonnette). They are still tiny and delicate little seedlings. But I'll keep my faith in them.
Thank you! They are tough little things- should grow just fine. If I can grow them- anyone can!
Thank you for this useful video! You make it look so easy! I am running into difficulties. Did you place the seedlings under grow lights? Thank you!
Sorry to hear that! I didn't use grow lights, just put them up close to a window that is actually west facing and they did just fine.
Here I have a variety from the nearby Pierian mountains. Typical in shape, not too pointy. Very tasty. Never done by seeds. They spread as usual in summer.
Amazing! Do you go picking them every summer? And do you make anything with them like jams or just eat them right away?
@@NickandJulie I went once at the pine forest where they are aboundant, at around 1650m a.s.l., with a friend on a car. Took 8 plants and they spread. Never went back to unroot other plants. Eat right away. Still not many...some I sold in small pots.
@@anastasiospattakos6650 very cool! Would be neat to share that variety to gardeners all over the world. One of the ones I grew in this video spread by runners.
Hi Flourish Ever After. Would you be kind enough to give us an update on your Alpine strawberry crops? Did you continue to plant seeds or is it something you just left on the side this year? Do you make homemade strawberry jam, with time did you finally get a big harvest from all the envelops you bought?
Hello! This video is a few years old now and quite a lot has changed since it was published. Actually, our lives have completely changed 😂 We ended up leaving that property and traveling full time in a truck camper. The alpine strawberries were moved to my parent's yard. They are nice little bushes producing delicious alpine strawberries. We just eat them as treats, never collected enough for jam. Probably need to plant a lot more to collect enough to make jam since they are small. Let me know if there are any more questions! Thank you for watching and have and great week!
Hello thanks for the video! They look delicious ! Are they supposed to be that small ? Also the plants looks very small, is that also supposed to be?
Thnx again for uploading and have a great day!
Hey! Yes they are tiny fruits and plants!
Hi, could you tell us which varieties (from the ones you bought) you found out tasted the best? Thank you for your great video.
They all taste delicious to me! I would probably stick to the red ones. The ones that are white/yellow seem to have a little less flavor. But still good! Have a great day!
Hey loved the vid! Is it possible to do the entire growth inside on a windowsill?
I think it is! Definitley worth a try.
I have the yellow wonder, they're prolific producers. They're fragile and slow down in the summer heat, but they're really good.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the yellow wonder variety 🍓
When they sprouted with leaves on the 9th day did you left the lead open since then? I also just started growing strawberry alpine on a container on a paper towel moist and it germinated within 4 days and some of the green leaves started to open and some is just root out started coming out so I put them on the soil today
Thanks for making this great vid. How many would you advise planting in a 2' x 6' bed? How far apart would you spacing the plants (and rows if applicable)?
You could do one per square foot in that 2'x6' bed. That will fill it in nicely. They do grow into a decent sized little bush.
@@NickandJulie Very helpful! Thanks for your prompt reply :-)
@@racebiketuner no problem! hope you get a lot of berries.
I bought seeds from the strawberry store! I’m so excited to get them planted. But I guess I had thought they wouldn’t produce berries until the 2nd year!
If you start them early enough, they will produce a few first year! Isn't that awesome?!
Love the bucket idea, I'll totally be stealing that this year. Any tips of fertilizer for them? Or should I skip it entirely?
Thanks! The only thing I would change is adding a pipe or bottle with holes in it in the center of the bucket to water all the way through. I didn’t fertilize at all and they were fine.
Very detailed video. Did you make holes beneath the containers before putting in the soil?
I believe so- its been a few years, I have a hard time remembering that one. I would have either bottom watered, or sprayed them with a spray bottle for watering. I checked on them daily to make sure they don't dry out so they got consistent water. Thank you for watching!
I’m not sure which variety of alpine strawberry I grew this last year but they tasted like pez candy. Best strawberries I’ve ever tasted. We have wild strawberries that grow here too that taste pretty close but they only fruit once during the summer.
I think there are wild woodland strawberries and wild alpine strawberries. Apparently the woodland are a little different flavour and also have a shorter fruit season.
Have you heard if Alpines will produce in hydroponics? Great video btw, thanks for the tips.
No, I haven't seen or read about anyone growing them that way, but its worth a try! Thank you 😄
I loved your video! I planted some alpine strawberry seeds about 6 weeks ago and I had a ton of little sprouts, but most of them have died off. I’ve also noticed some gnats around them, so I think I have some sort of fungus. Do you have any recommendations for how I can save the few I have left? Thank you!
Hmmm seems like they are staying a bit too wet. I would bottom water them if you can and let the top of the soil dry out between waterings.
It may help also to pour boiling water on your potting mix, cover with tin foil for an hour and let it cool/drain before planting if your struggle with fungal gnats. Potting soils often carry in gnat eggs from outdoors.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm currently growing tons of Quinault strawberries and I really wanna try growing Alpine strawberries. I've got limited space where I live; do you think they'll do okay in a container indoors with a grow light?
You are very welcome! I think they should do fine! The only issue I can think of if you are planning on growing them indoors all their lives is when they start blooming they might need assistance with pollination since there is no wind or insects indoors that can do that for them.
Flourish Ever After Hey there! I’m a complete beginner with no clue what I’m doing. I just have a simple five inch pot with a hole at the bottom and after they bloomed I was just planning to pick the two healthiest seeds and transfer them to the pot. Do you think the plant would be able to survive off my LED light and the light from my window or would it need to be in direct sunlight?
@@bugayden2287 sunlight
j Carlos Direct sunlight?
Thanks for this video. Sorry if you’ve already answered this question. I have a shaded balcony that doesn’t receive direct sunlight. Balcony is not dark and I already have some plants that grow here. Would these strawberries be okay in that environment or would I need to invest in a grow light?
They will still grow. However, they may not have enough energy to produce fruit. I would still give it a try since they produce fruit in their first year you will know after this year if you need to get a grow light for next year. Hope this helps!
Thank you for the elaborate explanation.
All the best wishes from India 🇮🇳
Btw, what background music was it (from when the seeds germinated)? It's so soothing to listen to !

Flourish Ever After it’s inspiring. I never thought of doing that before your video. I just got my alpine’s into the soil via red solo cups today.
@@dougf1249 thank you! I hope they do very well for you. I just picked some this morning and they are so worth the effort!
Flourish Ever After i’m actually a little worried. Been a week and no activity from mine. Can there he a too hot for germination?
Great video! I couldn’t catch which type of soil was used?
I believe it was just coconut coir.
Nice video, i purchased an alpine strawberry almost 2 weeks ago and now they are starting to sprout, the label said that it was runner less, I am wondering how can you propagate the alpine variety aside from sowing them from seeds. Thanks..
Just from seed if its a runnerless variety. I noticed if I miss a strawberry and it drops it self sows quite easily.
Lovely video. Two questions: how did you make those containers for them? And, did the baby plants get injured when you transplanted them? Thank you!
Thank you! The containers are buckets that we drilled those holes in with a 2 inch drill bit I believe. The only thing that I would do different is put a watering pipe with holes in it down the middle as the strawberries at the bottom don't get enough water. The baby plants looked sad for a day then perked up in a few days, started growing, and did great!
@@NickandJulie Thank you for answering. They are amazing! Glad your babies did so well!
Which variety is best for yield
How often do you water 💦 them whilst and after you have sown them
,🍓🍓🍓
So how long did it take from the seeds to harvest ? Thanks for your video
I have the months up in screen so you can see how long it took.
There is a couple variety I want to get, Yellow wander, Purple Wander, Pineberry, Strasberry, Bubble berry aka musk strawberry. There is also one variety that only grows in the Himalayas and it has a unique pink color to the berries. Its called fragaria Daltoniana. I guess isnt a strawberry with much taste but my interest is breeding it with the alpine strawberry.
wow I've never heard of most of those. Hope you can find some seed; best of luck on your breeding alpine strawberries project.
i live in new jersey. Can you leave strawberries planted in large pots outside in the winter or should i store it in garage?
They should be fine. Strawberries are pretty hardy. Good rule of thumb if planted in pots, subtract one gardening zone from yours since they’re not as protected as they are in the ground.
So let me start by saying wonderful video. I do have a question.i have about a cup of wild strawberries I picked at my moms house and want to grow them from the fruit, should I just bury the berries(ha) or deseed the fruit? Any help will be very appreciated and I will be very grateful. If you don't have time I get it and understand if you're to busy. Thanks again and good video
Thank you! Either way works. If it’s these tiny strawberries I would mash them gently and pour it on the soil and put a little bit of soil over it. & water. Don’t let the soil dry out while they germinate.
Did you keep them covered in the container up to the time you planted them in the larger container?
You can keep them covered until they germinate (sprout). Then they were uncovered.
just planted the seeds! I may have missed this in the video but how often do you water the seeds for germination?
When they are first germinating you just need to keep it moist at all times. When they are small plants, I bottom water when the top of the soil looks dry and the container feels lighter.
Also have you shown an update since you planted these in years following. I'm curious as to how they naturalize once they have been planted out, and what zone you live in...
I have not posted any updates about my alpine strawberries since this video. They are still in their containers that I made from those buckets. I have not planted them out yet. But even in the top of the container, they have begun to make more plants. When I miss a strawberry and it falls to the ground, it usually sprouts and makes new plants. So I would imagine that is how they would spread when in the ground. Since most of these do not send out runners, except that one specific variety that is mentioned in the video. I garden in zone 6. :)
Here is a video a fellow gardener did of her alpine strawberry patch. It gives you an idea of what they will look like if planted out into the land. She gardens in zone 6 as well. ua-cam.com/video/kzvO3CfrbKM/v-deo.html
It would be nice if we could get an update. Could you tell us how many strawberries you were able to get that summer from all of the bags you bought? Approximately 20, 60, 100, maybe more?
We are traveling full time now so I don’t have these anymore. They are planted in my moms garden now. But from memory, the first year isn’t abundant but you do get some. It’s still amazing that a perennial fruit plant will provide berries the first year!
How deep does the container need to be for alpine strawberries? And how close can I space them apart in the container?
I would say at least 8 inches deep. and I would give them 6-8 inch spacing between plants if planting in containers. 12 inches if planting in the ground. I tend to put things closer together in containers. Hope that helps!
I just bought seeds and it is end of June 2020. they are stamped " packaged for 2020. I live in New Jersey it is probably too late to start . Do you know if those seeds will be good for sowing in 2021 if I store them till then?
As long as they're kept in a cool dark place they should keep for years!
Do they grow back every year or you have to sow new ones all iver again?
They grow back every year 😊
@@NickandJulie thanks. I got some seeds eeady to sow
Wow! Did you water them every day?
Not every day, just when they needed it. When the container felt light, they need water.
I'm going to try this. Can i just buy the transplants instead of starting from seed? Also, do they always take that long to ripen? As in, plant in May, eat in July? Thanks.
If you can find a seller for transplants, sure! That’s how long it took to ripen in my climate. Could vary a bit.
@@NickandJulie Thanks!
How big do these berries get? Do they get the size of store bought ones or do they stay small and you eat them like that?
They stay that small. They are probably penny sized and taste different/better than normal strawberries. A delicacy :)
Did you use any fertilizer?
No fertilizer 🙂
Hi! Thanks for a great video on growing alpine strawberries. :) I was wondering how long does it take from once the seeds germinate to when you can harvest your first fruits? Mine just germinated!
The months are in text in the video, but I believe it was about 6/7 months for fruit. They are pretty quick to fruit!
Mine is fruiting since late December, i sow them in early May last year
I have been thinking why my strawberry fruit is so small, no I realized this species is small 😂
Is it ok to plant on the ground? Attracting to animals?
Yes, you can plant in the ground they should come back every year if you’re in the right zones for them. Some varieties do send out runners and multiply quickly on their own if planted in the ground. Just something to keep in mind.
Do they run fruit in winter?
No, not in Ohio they didn’t.
so do these come back each year on their own by chance? (being wild strawberries im assuming they do??)
Yes, they will come back every year! 😃
@@NickandJulie Then how do you prepare strawberry plants for winter? If you cut off the stems close to the surface will the roots in the soil produce new strawberry plants by themselves (of their own) or do you have to restart all over from seeds ?
@@05w strawberries will come back from roots on their own every year - they are perennial :) no need to restart from seed unless you want even more plants!
Which are your favourite variety? The red or yellow wonder. Were you able to keep them growing in the bucket for multiple seasons? Do you take them inside in the winter?
I liked the red ones better. They overwintered one season. Then I moved my entire garden to my parents house before we left to travel. They were planted into the ground at my parents and have been growing ever since.
How often did you water and was it with a spray bottle?
I watered when the top of the soil was dry or when I lifted the containers and they felt light. I bottomed water. Filled a container with water, put the pots in and let them soak up however much they needed.
Flourish Ever After thank you!
Do alpine strawberry plants grow better with garden lime?
Strawberries do like a bit more acidic soil so it should help them.
I planted mine about 1/4 to 3/4 of an inch deep is that too much?
Yes, they do need light to germinate.
Nice videoo!!! So it takes roughly 4 months for them to start fruiting.....
yes approximately. Pretty quick for a berry. even if they are tiny. :)

Oh no! Hopefully he’s still selling them. I know Renee’s garden has seeds for Mignonette and the Pineapple alpine strawberries if that helps. I wonder if there are any sellers on eBay.
Do they hate direct sunlight?
now they are in my garden outside in full direct sun for about 4 hours.
My alpine flowering alot, but why it cant develop fruit, lint it wont getting bigger... im so desperate. Do you have any solution?
Are pollinators getting to the flowers? If not, try hand pollinating.
Did you ever managed to buy Pineapple Crush?
No I haven’t grown that one yet. And won’t anytime soon as we are traveling full time in a truck camper at the moment. Maybe someday!
Can alpine strawberries be grown in the caribbean. What is the best conditions for them to be grown.
They can grow in zones 3-10. Alpine strawberry plants are best grown in rich, well drained soil that doesn’t dry out easily. These are woodland plants so they’ll tolerate a bit of shade but aren’t a fan of dry soil.
Can it grow in hot climates?
They can grow from zones 3-10. Zone 10: 30 to 40°F
Is it okay to have alpine strawberry plants so close together? I mean, they look really close together at least, which I haven't seen with normal strawberry plants
I transplanted them out of the container I started them in.
@@NickandJulie I know, I meant in the container
@@shahidislam3791 oh okay, that is close. It is recommended to plant them 12" apart when planting in the ground. I wanted the plants to be close together to hide the container completely and be lush. It was an experiment- I love experimenting in the garden. And I definitely don't follow all the rules.
@@NickandJulie I mean, it looks great. I was just wondering cuz all the recommendations say to space them further apart haha
Is this a plant that only lives one year or how long can they last?
This is a perennial, it comes back every year after winter on its own.
I started my seeds in March and they just started to get bigger. Ugh. I'm tones produced from seed but they are just not progressing as fast as I see yours has.
That’s okay as long as they are growing you’ll get fruit eventually. Plus they will come back for you every year so it’s a win!
Do they grow in Texas?
They grow in zones 3-9. You can find your growing zone by zip code- search on google.
@@NickandJulie ok thank you
@@isaacg4511 no problem! 👍
do you have to use the mixture of soil you used or can it just be a bag of composte from the shop
It doesn't have to be the same mixture. Potting soil, seed starting mix, something that is a bit on the airy side would do. A bag of compost might be too dense but it might work.
What kind of plastic is that you put in container?
The plastic containers are just things I had that I reused. There are a lot of things that can be used as growing containers.
theyre so little. but good video
