I live in the area. Traverse is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable (if any) and never on the last. Just the opposite of the same word used as a noun. The name comes from french voyagers who called the twin bays "le grand traverse". When navigating along the shoreline they had to traverse a large stretch of open water at the mouth of the bays.
