I love the more detailed topo layers available on Spartan Forge, 10ft contour lines is a huge advantage. Hopefully they will expand the leaf off imagery throughout PA. I have been using both, but ultimately onx is still more user friendly with the offline maps in particular. If you could combine the best features of both I think we would have a near perfect application.

I do like the 10’ contour lines. It helps see the micro terrain features much better. Better leaf off across PA would be awesome.

Spartan Forge has passed ONX by far, last two updates have been amazing.

Spartan Forge is better. It’s getting easier to navigate as I use it more. Switching from OnX to Spartan forge was a great decision. Spartan Forge has only been out for a couple years and they are improving rapidly. The price is way better on Spartan Forge also.

Did you try the other satellite layers on SF? Should have a couple other options

Hi William, thanks for watching. I have two satellite layers in my area. One is better than the other. Where I hunted in Ohio, the imagery for SF was substantially better than OnX.

Good video! Nice info on Spartan Forge. For me I absolutely love onX. Does all that I need it to do and is very user friendly. There could be a better mapping app out there but I haven’t had any issues with onX to look elsewhere. I did have huntstand before I had onX and I didn’t like it at all. Very glitchy, not super user friendly and not as many features as onX.

It’s hard to switch when you have an app you are used to. OnX and Google Earth combo for me is hard to beat.

@@SufferingOutdoors yes; I’ve got into Google earth some the past few years; you can see contour on there that you can’t see on onX

I would love to see a desktop app comparison. SF, onX, & Basemap

I have both and think the same about Spartan Forge. Another issue you didn't bring up is the map legends or roads etc are harder to find and see on Spartan also making it less user friendly. I find it difficult to find areas of roads I would like to hunt from or know there is access. Also doesn't show any logging trails or not all of them. Then what you have selected is what is downloaded and so that is all the info you get is what map options you had downloaded. With no cell signal, need more flexibility.
Also find the deer data as about as useful as moon data like full range??? Ok that still means I need to get boots on the ground and figure the deer out myself and it doesn't help. I am a new hunter though so what do I know.

There were a couple other minor things I didn’t dive into due to the interest of time. I had noticed a couple areas the stream names weren’t there. I use names of streams a lot for navigating. Not sure if that is an SP issue or settings issue. Boots on the ground is still the best tool. If I have a day off or it’s a Saturday during the season, I’m hunting regardless of the prediction software.

I work for Spartan Forge, I am wondering what you mean by this comment. Are you saying its difficult to see roads? I am not sure I understand the problem.

Tried free version of spartan forge today. I like ONX feature to set the wind on my waypoint. I did not see that on SF. I wish ONX captured the weather params when I set my waypoint or let me tell it to do that. While it does show me the weather I think it does not keep it but changes it over time. I also could not search and find my target scouting destination even though they were common wildlife mgmt areas in my area using SF. ONX finds them easily.

That is something I didn’t test actually. A lot of the areas I hunt I’ve learned to find more quickly scrolling to vs searching. Interesting.

OnX in Maine is horrible. I paid for elite and literally every area I hunt or wanted to hunt had no boundaries. They admitted it was horrible. At first there was wildlife management districts and soon after downloading they did away with them. OnX to me seems to be going backwards for the price.

I’ve only used Onx with property boarders in PA. Have you used Spartan Forge there and found the boarders are better? I wonder if it is more of a tax record issue for boarders and not necessarily an OnX issue?

@@SufferingOutdoors there were boarders last year. One of my buddies had it that's why I got it and it's just been down grading since. Even their field pros that live up here their property isn't listed.
