Nah but for real, I definitely appreciate your shiny reactions. They feel way more real for someone who's been mind-numbingly grinding such a painstaking and rewarding task.
The evolution stones can actually be found rarely in sparkly mineral outcrops. Not super common drops, but if you go for them whenever you can you'll end up with a decent stockpile without too much time needed
Here's a tip: for Pokemon who have to use status condition moves that don't do damage, go fight Magikarp. They can't hurt you and you can spam the move until you run out of PP.
7:05 You can take advantage of the Pokédex being split into 6 sections, the full dex and one for each area. You can set it so your Fieldlands dex is set to Infernape, and you Mirelands camp is set to Tangela. That way you just have to hit zr and zl to check them both.
Silcoon and Cascoon time of day catching count if you evolve Wurmple at the correct time and get the right evo! That makes it way easier! Deafeating them is still an issue but catching is doable
What I do is catch a lot of Wurmple, get them to evolution level, save my game and THEN evolve them to see what they'll turn into. After nicknaming them so I don't lose track of which ones evolve into Silcoon/Cascoon, I quit out of the game, reload the save and just go to the right time of day so I can get them to evolve and therefore qualify for the Dex entries.
It's INSANE to see how much can be done with this game. It was a total blast watching you take on this journey every day, and great job finishing it all off! Lots of wisdom in this video (like the Sinjoh Shiny Arceus reward) I swear they must have made a mistake creating the entry for Magnemite, creating it as if it were a normal spawn and not a distortion exclusive, especially since Magnezone appears in the wild! Also, nice vlog intro. Liked and suscirbed!

What I find interesting is Arceus’s Research Task. This research task actually makes a lot of sense. It’s single research task states “Received a part of Arceus.” This is interesting because it implies that the Arceus you get in this game isn’t actually the Arceus you meet, but just a fraction of it. This also implies that the Arceus we see isn’t what it actually looks like.
Which is an implication that I love. I imagine some of the bigger, ridiculously strong Pokemon are simply fragments of the original. So instead of literally catching a god, they gift a part of themselves to you for being worthy.
When you started doing this, I was like, "oh great, guess I'm not going to watch John for a few weeks, this sounds boring" but actually I did end up watching quite a bit, it was shockingly fun to watch and gamble on shinies showing up and see the progress being made!
Congrats dude! One hell of an achievement! I no-lifed this too and did it at just over 300 hours/4 weeks. I didnt use mmos when they dropped since I didn't want to cheese the last part after I'd already done the majority of it as a grind, but I plan on doing it again at some point using MMOs and all the knowledge I gained the first time with a target of 150 hours... congrats again on this and GL to anyone else working on it! It's a super fun goal. Also, love the way you styled this video. Thumbs up from me!
Glad to see this actually completed. I remember using moves against Magikarp for days while listening to podcasts trying this my first playthrough. I eventually gave up, so it's nice to see it finished. Great work :D
I used Ingo's battles for some of the more annoying move and style requirements and just to finish grinding them out after I finished all the defeat x pokemon with a specific type of move tasks Your pokemon are all healed and all pp restored after each battle, and you can train up weaker pokemon to be able survive a move or two so they can also finish tasks in Ingo battles
This is what I did! Specifically for 'mons like Golem, Machamp, and Alakazam. Much easier to just battle Ingo and Kamado a couple times than hunt the alphas that spawn in a variety of different areas.
I have around half your game time, and maybe 20 Pokémon perfected. I have the highest respect for you doing this, and congrats on finishing this massive challenge!
old video so idk if you'll see this, but just wanted to say that i appreciate your work so much! youtube has been only recommending me either stuff from people i don't sub to or really heavy video essays lately and i just need something to fill the quiet with interesting topics and fun vibes. rewatching your content has been that for me for the last few weeks. i've been a sub for awhile, but have been rewatching your stuff at night for a few weeks now just because i can't handle the quiet and listening to a deep dive on a horrible person or situation would put me in a worse place mentally. thank you for making such fun and interesting videos!
The evolution task has to count evolving from and into otherwise you couldn't get some tasks from 3rd stage pokemon. It just so happens that 3 stage evolutions have a middle stage that you evolve into and then out of. Hope that explanation makes any sense to anyone but me.
I hope it stays in the game as is. Because even when you say it out loud it fits a check mark for both. Saying I evolved my Pidgey is the same as saying this is the Pigeotto I just evolved. Technically in a way both Pokémon were involved and part of the evolution process, so therefore both should count for the Research Task Number you've evolved.
Tip for Silcoon and Cascoon I've found out: Just evolve them. Catch plenty of Wurmple. And evolve them until you have all of the catching related ones.
I had so much fun playing this game. If I had 300 hours to lose, I would definitely do this challenge. But I’m gonna stick with your video. Thnx a lot for your great content. Really hyped to know that you have other videos coming for this game !

6:51 I made a spreadsheet with two columns: type of attacking move and type of defending move. EG Infernape had "fire" in the attack category and Tangela had "fire" in the defend category. Then I just matched them up accordingly. There's wayyy more attacking tasks than defeating tasks though, so you have to do a bunch extra anyway
I remember doing this one myself, took just over 300 hours and was by far the most satisfied I've felt after any Pokemon challenge. Shocked people mention Magikarp as hard, he's easily one of the easiest to perfect, it's Aipom and the Pokemon in shaking trees in general that are truly the hardest and most frustrating to perfect in my experience. All you have to do is watch him splash, which I did while using my Pokemon that needed to use status effects or stat changes like all the Eeveelutions Baby Doll Eyes. The cap is extremely frustrating for sure, for awhile I just used a notepad
After perfecting the dex entry for Pachirisu to get a big shiny squirrel I can say with confidence I'd NEVER Attempt this. I spent like 18 HOURS Knocking out Pokemon outta trees in the mirelands. HUGE Props to you for this
Fun fact: from my experience, unkown outbreaks are broken, but can show up in massive mass outbreaks. It sucks, too, because that was my berry outbreak that cycle. Edit: I got my shiny pink pachirisu from a shaky tree! She's a semi-permanent on my team because she's the first non-event/story shiny I ever caught!
With Magnemite its interesting as I believe it was planned to spawn in the wild. Mostly gained this assumption due to Magnezone, who has a 100% encounter while flying in an area
So a couple of things about this video. 1. I can't believe you did this you absolute God Gamer. 2. This is probably one of your funniest videos that I have ever watched. 3. I am already rethinking my plan to do this exact thing so thank you for showing me how much I have to hate myself to attempt this.
22:30 That's actually not true! I had a Carnivine randomly drop a Sun Stone after I defeated it - I remember it specifically because of how surprised and happy I was, since I really wanted to use a Lilligant on my team Of course, I have no idea how rare that is, so probably not that great of a method for getting a bunch lol
I'm currently doing a Perfect Pokédex Quest myself! I'm around 180. And I'm not a streamer, so I have to do it around a 40-hour work week! Also, I'm doing it all, including the Path of Solitude marks, *before* I go to meet Arceus. And yes, trees are my NEMESIS! Aipom was the WORST! I'm mostly done with shaking spots, though. Only bronzor, nosepass, and bergmite left.
I would never go for perfection, but when I heard you lamenting at 18:20 about some pokemon being much harder to find when shaking trees, it reminded me of the pains I went thru to find a cherrim
I’ve been doing this challenge and had the same exact questions of WHY GOD WHY? The magikarp thing and the evolution thing I’m so glad you found as well, made using mimic with the mime and bonsly family so easy! Major disappointment was the points total not going over 99,999 I’m seriously hoping they add dlc and push any earned points over that total! Awesome video absolutely awesome!
You can get shinies so easily in this game and I'm here for it, and even easier if you perfect an entry instead of having it "complete." So now since I'm aiming for a whole shiny pokedex, this is a "perfect" tutorial. ( no pun intended ) Thanks John !
I’ve been working on perfecting mine too, up to about 180 and starting to burnout. But once I saw that reward at the end, I knew that I need to finish this. Thanks Johnstone!
It was great watching this entire challenge on Twitch. I know you said you weren't sure how you would turn it into a video, but you did a great job, John!
Commenting before watching just to say: I'm in the process of taking on this challenge myself, and seeing the occasional clip of you doing this on your clips channel has been both very entertaining and has given me motivation to keep going (even though I'm aware there's no reward)
Hi John, I have almost completed this challenge as well, with only about 8 pokemon left to perfect. One piece of advice I'd like to give viewers is if going for a certain amount of strong/agile style moves for a pokemon while also going a certain amount of uses for a move like hyperbeam that has only 5pp, it is quite often more efficent to not attempt to use hyperbeam as agile or strong to complete 2 entries at once. Instead, use hyperbeam (or the 5pp move you are targetting) normally. Once you have that done, find a weak pokemon in the cobalt coastlands or obsidian fieldlands to use a higher pp, non damage dealing move over and over. Something like calm mind or swords dance works great. This way you dont waste time and resources refilling pp for hyperbeam, and you can knock out the entire agile/strong type moves entry in one singular battle if your pokemon is a high enough level. Your pokemon will often be a high enough level if you have farmed massive mass outbreaks because most of the pokemon requiring these entries are around level 50-60 when captured in a massive mass outbreak. Also, using a maxed out Lucario on your team as a staple is very helpful because you can farm Alpha Blissey with fighting type to secure large exp crystals, as well as having agile style mach punch to chain attacks infinitely. My last piece of advice is obvious, but wing balls are a must for catching pokemon in large quantities and sticky globs combined with ultra balls make farming alpha pokemon catches very easy.
The moment I reached the Mirelands, I went and perfected Petilil’s dex to maximize shiny odds. 2 months later and with the shiny charm in my belt as well, I still have no shiny Petilil. I’m so sad.
@R - G - C Yep, finally found one right next to some of the Goomy and have since gotten trained up. Now I’m just hoping I will be able to transfer it to something like Scarlet and Violet to pair with my shiny Unovan Lilligant from USUM
I've been completing the challenge too and found out one of the best ways to farm agile or strong style moves is using non-damaging status moves vs Magikarp. It really saved me a lot of time as I could spam use 10+ strong/agile moves vs only 1 Pokémon per Pokémon on my team
i got this game last month and compared to other games, this has to be my fav pokemon game. maybe its bc of how freely you can catch the pokemon and the quests for the pokedex which were all a super nice surprise
I was very upset to realize Johnstone was NOT live when watching this video Seriously though, incredible video my man. The amount of dedication you have is insane. Keep it up, king!
Wow this video was AMAZING for me. I’ve been working on this for a while now (but I’m not doing them in any particular order) This is so relatable, and the Magikarp grinding is a great idea. Looking forward to hunting again after this.
Been doing this challenge myself, though limited playtime means im nowhere near done. Completed all location-based tasks and am only missing the use move and use style tasks for all Pokemon. Planning on doing so while also doing the Path of Perfection with each Perfected Entry. (Aipom Tree Leap Hell…)
To be honest the normal grind to get Lvl 10 on all of the entries is actually surprisingly fun and rewarding. Idk about perfecting the dex though, doesn't seem like shiny Arceus is gonna be a thing time soon.
Thanks for the overview and pitfalls of this completionist dream! You've given me some great ideas to structure how I work on it. I'm going to mark on the maps where the rare/alphas I need to essentially reload the map to complete the catching portion of and just go to regions for outbreaks, making sure to hit those spots afterwards before I leave the map. And of course with a team full of mons that need to use more moves. That way I can semi-passively complete a lot of entries while mainly shiny hunting
I remember I saw Garchomps entry to use a strong style move 100 times or smth like that, I'm pretty sure by the time I was had almost caught every pokemon I was only at 50 (my garchomp was overlevled so i always used him)
Almost 150 hours in, my completionist brain doesn't want me to progress the story past defeating avalugg because I've been captivated by completing the Pokédex to perfection... Needless to say, I knew about pretty much all tips and tricks in this video, besides some of the mechanics of the rifts (thank you!). And I'm probably too stubborn to complete the story and gain access to massive mass outbreaks before perfecting everything else.
That was lazy of the developers to not even have some dialogue ready for perfecting the dex. At the very least if they were waiting for dlc, they could have given a tease towards the dlc.
Just a heads up for those wanting to do this. Trading the same pokemon from one game to another, then back again will increase the number caught. So you don't have to evolve silly amounts of certain pokemon. This is also works for larger/smaller specimens. :D
OMG can't believe at how the game acknowledges this amazing achievement! Glad I watched all the way to the end!

And yes, trees are my NEMESIS! Aipom was the WORST! I'm mostly done with shaking spots, though. Only bronzor, nosepass, and bergmite left.
this video is incredible, i always come back to watch it every now and again
The spawning issue is heavily helped with Massive Mass Outbreaks. That’s how I perfected Zoroark
currently also 100%ing the pokedex, as soon as you mentioned silcoon i felt shivers down my spine
Did you finish?
These streams were so entertaining and fun to be a part of. Love how the video turned out and looking forward to more :)
Well Gamefrea probably nobody would be insane enough to go past 99,999 points. But Gamefreak clearly doesn't know who plays their games.
My comment making the cut for asking "what you get when you complete the dex" has made tuning in to the later half of the dex completion all worth it
I can 100% say that at August 27th, 2023, evolving Pokemon from stage 1 to stage 3 counts as 2 evolves for the stage 2 Pokemon.
You can get shinies so easily in this game and I'm here for it, and even easier if you perfect an entry instead of having it "complete." So now since I'm aiming for a whole shiny pokedex, this is a "perfect" tutorial. ( no pun intended )
Thanks John !
I’ve been working on perfecting mine too, up to about 180 and starting to burnout. But once I saw that reward at the end, I knew that I need to finish this. Thanks Johnstone!
Idk why but this video was relaxing to listen to, I’m just playing arceus while listening someone who knows about it. And ur voice is nice
Hey John, love the vids and streams, I’m perfecting the dex to and is suprisingly fun! Keep up the great work
Woo! Perfect Dex Squad! I'm at about 180! Doing it all before Arceus. Keep up the good work!
It was great watching this entire challenge on Twitch. I know you said you weren't sure how you would turn it into a video, but you did a great job, John!
I knew I was in for a wild ride when I saw that this man had defeated 592 starly
this was so good to watch live, well done bro
Hanging out during all of these streams was so fun, the video turned out great too!! Can't wait for the next challenge you plan to do
As soon as I learned about "perfect" entries, I was waiting for this video from you. Wow.
Tip: Keep evolution items in your boxes. It comes in handy for completing and filling in the dex!
Wow, the foreshadowing of catching every shiny Pokémon was nuts, glad you finished the Let’s Go challenge haha
The moment I reached the Mirelands, I went and perfected Petilil’s dex to maximize shiny odds. 2 months later and with the shiny charm in my belt as well, I still have no shiny Petilil. I’m so sad.
Rip. Do you have it now?
@R - G - C Yep, finally found one right next to some of the Goomy and have since gotten trained up. Now I’m just hoping I will be able to transfer it to something like Scarlet and Violet to pair with my shiny Unovan Lilligant from USUM
@@the_godbodor7026 Man congrats!
I finally did it. Took me coming back to the game several times. I'm glad
I've been completing the challenge too and found out one of the best ways to farm agile or strong style moves is using non-damaging status moves vs Magikarp. It really saved me a lot of time as I could spam use 10+ strong/agile moves vs only 1 Pokémon per Pokémon on my team
you deserve so much more. This is incredible
Wow, the amount of content this game has is insane!! Perfecting every Pokemon in the game is an amazing feat great job
i got this game last month and compared to other games, this has to be my fav pokemon game. maybe its bc of how freely you can catch the pokemon and the quests for the pokedex which were all a super nice surprise
Aipom from trees and nosepass from deposits are currently annoying me but I’m slowly doing this
Guess we are on the exact same boat.
I remember how fun this video was once it came out. I can say its still a lot of fun to just rewatch
I was very upset to realize Johnstone was NOT live when watching this video
Seriously though, incredible video my man.
Omg I can’t believe someone actually did this! This would take forever! Congrats though!
To be honest the normal grind to get Lvl 10 on all of the entries is actually surprisingly fun and rewarding. Idk about perfecting the dex though, doesn't seem like shiny Arceus is gonna be a thing time soon.
Thank goodness I checked what the reward for perfecting the Pokedex was before going to replay the game.
Can't believe he finally got the shiny Arceus for perfecting the dex.
But I thought it was the perfect bidoof as the final reward 🤔
All your videos take SO much effort. Kudos to you sir. A legend. 🙏
But what does eevee evolve into when you give it a Johnstone? 🤔
A Johneon, obviously
A Completeon!
...too corny?
Loved watching it live, congrats on finishing it!
Man i cannot belive the reward was a shiny arceus a good reward for a crazy achievement! keep up the good work!
I remember I saw Garchomps entry to use a strong style move 100 times or smth like that, I'm pretty sure by the time I was had almost caught every pokemon I was only at 50 (my garchomp was overlevled so i always used him)
Do the trainer battlegrounds in jubilife village. Make strong uses of Earth Power and Dragon Claw. It's what I did.
Subscribed instantly haha. You’re content is great, even the samples haha
Got the game for 1 week or so, going to complete it, what a treat!
That was lazy of the developers to not even have some dialogue ready for perfecting the dex. At the very least if they were waiting for dlc, they could have given a tease towards the dlc.
Was there for a lot of the streams. Great stuff man. Keep up the great work.
Just a heads up for those wanting to do this. Trading the same pokemon from one game to another, then back again will increase the number caught. So you don't have to evolve silly amounts of certain pokemon. This is also works for larger/smaller specimens. :D
I've been on a Johnstone binge these last few days. Crazy to see how far he's gotten
This video was uploaded the day shiny Arceus became available to hunt in BDSP. Maybe it actually was the reward
