    I had two times to change the tensioner on my 2002 Rav4. 1st time was 10 years ago, jacked up the engine and took out the upper bolt. 2nd time was 1 year ago, similar to this video but no need to take out the crank pulley. Take out the pulley bolt and pulley first. Now the body of the tensioner becomes thinner. Then loosed the upper bolt and take out the lower bolt's nut. Take out the tensioner finally.

    The belt tensioner on my 2006 Camry was rock hard, and barely moved down to loosen belt. I mean, that thing was so dang hard, that a cheater bar, and breaker bar couldn’t get it to move. I ended up snapping off the 19mm tensioner lever. I had to saw off the original belt to loosen the screws, and replace the dang thing. For me, it was easier to remove the top and passenger side motor mounts and jack up the engine a little, to make way for that extra long screw holding the tensioner to the block.

    Don't know what model you're working on in the video, but I just tried this method on a 2008 RAV4 2.4L and it doesn't work. The upper tensioner bolt hits the frame rail before it is fully loosened. The only way to remove it is to raise the engine until the bolt clears the frame rail (like it says to do in the factory manual).

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  4 роки тому

      The entire reason I made this video is because this short cut method seems impossible - but it isn't. It can be done on a RAV4 or a Highlander or a Camry or anything else with a 2az-fe. Use the force - I don't mean brute force. LOL.

    If you do this method, consider replacing the rubber crankshaft pulley seal . It will prevent a big oil leak and costs around 13 bucks U.S.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  2 роки тому

      In theory, yes, you should be able to run the belt around the water pump pulley, bypassing the ac. But you'll have to determine the length of the belt yourself, by trial and error. Do a google search for "2az-fe serpentine belt routing" and you will see the routing.

      I am doing this now on a 2006 scion tc and the are 2 bolts and one nut. One nut and one bolt is on the actual shock, nut on bottom, bolt on top. THEN there is a 14 mm bracket bolt up top as in you are working from the bottom. It is impossible to get it from the top on a scion tc because it is way to far back. I mean if you have a 2 ft long 14mm wrench have at it. The problem is that 14mm bracket bolt is made from the same soft alloy as the tensioner nut and get rounded off easy. I am still working on that upper 14mm bracket bolt mine is rounded off. Been to all the hardwares trying to find a wrench made like the bolt extractor sockets to bite the rounded head. Forget trying to get a socket in there. Now if you have help, you can remove the passenger motor mounts and bottom trans mount then raise that side up with a jack on wood at bottom of oil pan. Sorry to report that top 14mm bolt WILL NOT come out this way. I had a 20 year tech tell me this is the only way to get it out on the 1st generation scions. He says it's how they do it at the dealerships.

      @Merryfrankster_ The easiest way is with two people, one on top,one on the bottom with passenger side wheel off,plastic guards, a side.now the belt is going on all grooved pullies first.the person on top holds the belt on to the alternator pully and holds tensioner wide open. The person on the bottom with a spray bottle (soap and water)spray a small amount of soap and water on the tensioner pully the belt slips on easy.
      It will slip on without soap and water but way harder. All of this will take about 10 minutes. By yourself, God only knows.
