@@EnriqueSalgadoinSpain I got the box set "Message in a Box" in 1993, which had at the time, all of their "recordings". It changed a ton of my taste in music. Afterwards, I regretted i didnt get to see them tour since they broke up in 1984. Until 2007 when they reunited. I finally got to see them, but the band they had been was long gone. It was still them, but it couldnt be what they had been in the height of the bands success in the early 1980s.
This song is about obsession. One person being obsessed with someone else, in not necessarily a healthy way. So, he's watching her...he's suspicious but at the same time he loves her. There's darkness here but also strong passion and desire. It's a brilliant song!
Some call love obsession and some call obsession love. One man's junk is another man's treasure. Isn't that how it goes? Or maybe love has nothing to do with feelings. Perhaps it is all about actions, that you've committed to and follow through to do. And in retrospect you see it was there, love, in the actions spread out over time.
@@TheRootedWord it's how that love is expressed, obsession is the unhealthy extreme "unable to let go and move on" type of love for another to the point of stalking

The lead singer is Gordon Sumner who is called Sting because he used to wear a black and yellow striped sweater. This song is definitely a stalker’s song. Listen to it with that knowledge and the meaning suddenly becomes clear.
When he left the Police, Sting was so annoyed that this was what he was most known for. Later on he came to appreciate it, but he has always enjoyed, it seems, pointing out to those who misinterpreted this as a love song, that it’s actually a very dark song about obsession and stalking.
Not to mention that "Don't Stand So Close To Me" was about an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student. He sometimes wrote completely fucked up lyrics on purpose, and people wouldn't even notice.
@@elbruces the funny part is his arrogance. Most artists have the humility, or insecurity, to let fans interpret songs how they like. Not Sting. Love that guy.

So true. I saw an interview where Sting once said something about the song having nothing to do with love, and if people understood how dark it really was, they'd know that it doesn't come anywhere close to love.
Hey without stalking, date rape and shotgun weddings at least 1/3 of all children would not have been born and mathematically the human race would cease to exist.
A few years later Sting wrote the song "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" as an antidote to the obsessive possessiveness of this one. Worth a listen, if you want to dive into is solo career.
I love the stalker's national anthem. In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity.
The oppositional natures of the melody and the lyrics is what makes a sophisticated ironic tension in the song. It is 'sweet and sour', attractive and repulsive at the same time. This is pretty typical of Sting.
Actually it's about when Sting was eleven and he staked out a boys house for weeks til he got one, just one, opportunity to get into his unlocked garage and retrieve his stolen bike.

But first listen to Roxanne which is the song that broke them in the US - amazing band!
Shape Of My Heart ends the movie, The Professional. Perfect end to a great movie that they should also checkout. I think it was the first movie role for a young Natalie Portman, and she kills it. Also first movie I’d seen Jean Reno and he’s great too as a naive, almost childlike, professional hitman. Gary Oldman is an out of control cop. One of my favorite actors in one of my least favorite of his roles.
So many Police songs worth listening, “Walking on the Moon”, “Roxanne”, “So Lonely”, “Message in a Bottle”, “Don’t Stand so Close to Me”, “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “Synchronicity”
He's sold millions of records for his skills. Millions of dollars for playing bass while singing. Being a top level musician and getting paid hefty sums means you are properly rated amongst your peers.
When he was asked where they got the name The Police, Stewart Copeland said “I saw it on the side of a car.” He may have been joking, I’m not sure. Either way I think they just thought the name sounded good. Every Breath You Take is about a guy whose girlfriend or wife has left him and now he’s stalking her. Pretty dark, but The Police were known for exploring pretty dark themes.
@SvenTviking. Yep. Copeland was the only American in the band. I read somewhere that he met the other two while he was staying with his dad when the CIA posted him in England.
For some reason I thought it was related to Sting’s divorce? But that may have been “Wrapped Around your Finger”? Which I always thought had a similar vibe to this, but more haunting.
Music Appreciation 101 should be a required class in every high school, it seems each new generation is locked into their own "coming of age" musical time period with very few exceptions.
While not revealing who this song was about the lead singer Sting during an interview said this was a very dark song had very ominous undertones and it came from a dark place.... then he said this is not a love song
I love the way Jordan pays such close attention to the band names and the name of the song. He's paying attention to detail which is VERY important when reacting to a song. I appreciate the attention he gives.
Try "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by the Police... I like that one a little more. Sting is the main singer and he sings about falling in love a lot. You'll see a lot of repeating phrases in a lot of his Police and solo songs.
The song was recently used as the last track on the Stranger Things season 2 soundtrack album. Given it's playing as the world flips from the winter dance to show the upside down and the 'Mindflayer' watching them it's pretty damn effective.
Their best song imo: Every Little Thing She Does is Magic. "Fields of Gold" is another good one. You should check it out, then the beautiful cover by Eva Cassidy.
Was courted by my husband of 38 years started with this album and Synchronicity, we fell in love listening to this band! Love love love the Police! Genious music!
Saw them do this live at Shea Stadium in August 1983 for the Synchronicity tour, was an amazing show. This is just one of the many great songs on this album, they also did "King Of Pain" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" that were also hits from this album.
Most people know what the lyrics are, seems silly to question that, and to be honest, It really doesn’t matter. Like all music, which is an art form. You can interpret it any way you like. Just because it’s a dark and sinister song about obsession and stalking, doesn’t mean that it HAS to be that everytime you listen to it. There’s a beauty there in the music. People play the song because of the beautiful melodies that are very romantic in a way. The music doesn’t match the lyrics here. For example, Torture by The Jacksons is a very sinister song lyrically and musically, it matches. The song is not uplifting at all. This song has the opposite effect here, the lyrics are about something unhealthy but the music is beautiful. People play the song because it’s simply a beautiful piece of music. And at a wedding, people will play beautiful music regardless of the message of the lyrics.
One of the best rock bands from the late 70’s and 80’s. Stewart Copeland, the drummer is one of the best rock drunmers with very particular style. You must react to Roxane, Every little thing she does is magic, Message in a bottle, Synchronicity, Dont stand so close to me (the original version). Thks for the great videos!!
Supposedly The Police were so acrimonious while recording this album, they couldn't even be in the same room without fighting. And yet they cranked out this masterpiece.

This song was in The Replacements…. My daddy and I watched that movie almost daily for 3 months before he passed away we watched a lot of movies in those last months . He loved this song and I would never tell him daddy this song is about a man stalking a woman . I didn’t want to ruin his love of the movie and that song .
Police is the group, Sting is the lead singer. The song is about stalking. Then he wrote “If You Love Someone Set Them Free”. Also, P. Diddy sampled it for a tribute song to Biggie which is still played on the radio today.
No it’s not. Sting said this in an interview..“I didn’t realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, of surveillance and control.” It’s about the government watching everything you do…
The Police beat MJ for best song of the year in 1983 with this song; that is how popular this song was! It's been in multiple movies and been covered by so many artists, I couldn't even give you a count. Even huge singers like Phil Collins and Annie Lennox have covers of this song. That's how overwhelming popular it was in the 80's. It's been featured in Stranger Things twice already, too. Lol :) The lyrics to this song came to Sting in a dream. He later wrote If You Love Somebody as a response to this song, its antithesis, and it was also a huge hit. You should hear that song if you haven't reacted to it yet. :)
This song was so popular back in the 80s that I heard that for a year or two it was literally playing on the radio somewhere in the world 24 hours a day.
The second side of the Synchronicity album is awesome, as it starts with "Every Breath You Take," goes into "King of Pain," then "Wrapped Around Your Finger" and it ends with "Tea in the Sahara." The CD is even better when it adds the bonus track "Murder by Numbers" (which definitely should have been on the album to begin with).
J&A, You'll love their "Roxanne", "So Lonely", "Spirits In The Material World" and all the other songs mentioned here!!! edit - The Police = primary songwriter Sting (lead vocals, bass guitar), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion)
I really love watching you. I love your openness to listen to music that is outside your culture. Not many people are. I'm 67 old white lady. Music got me through every good & not so good times in my life since I was 11.
It's a song about a stalker. Sting, the lead singer of the Police said it came to him in a dream, if I recall correctly. My uncle and I were watching MTV the day this song debuted...and we both knew instantly that it was about a stalker, but it was incredible how many people played it at their wedding thinking it was a love song.
LOL...I was just gonna bring that up. I remember so many people dedicating this "beautiful" song to their SO, then later on realizing what it actually meant.
Yes, the '80s. The Police or the lead singer, Sting, as a solo act......either way you go, you have something amazing! This is a fabulous song about stalking , as strange as that sounds. LOL ! I've always had a major crush on Sting. Yes! *The Police* (a rock band) "Roxanne" "Don't Stand So Close to Me" "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" "Wrapped Around Your Finger" *Sting* (mixture of rock, jazz, blues, soul and R&B) "Be Still My Beating Heart". It's pretty deep, especially when you find out what the song is about and why he wrote it. "Shadows In the Rain" "We'll Be Together" "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" "Shape Of My Heart" " Seven Days" "Still Know Nothin' 'Bout Me" Sooo much more by The Police and by Sting!
Just discovered your Channel and literally binge watched for the past 3 hours! Recommendation for you - Ultravox - dancing with tears in my eyes …. Great song!
“I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership,” Sting said in 1983. The Police frontman was speaking during a sold-out arena tour of the US. Thanks to the “nasty little song”, which had just spent two months at the top of the Billboard singles chart, the trio were acclaimed as the world’s biggest band. They were also on the verge of breaking up. Taken from the Financial Times in 2018.
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" was popular for a good reason. "Don't Stand So Close To Me", "Roxanne", "King of Pain", "Synchronicity" and so many more. Sting has a string of hits from his solo career too.
The lead singer Sting also had many hits as a solo artist including We'll be Together, If you love somebody set them free, and If I ever lose my faith in you.
The Police was a 3-man-band: Brits Sting (lead vocals & bass) & Andy Summers (guitar), and American Stuart Copeland (drummer & younger brother of a manager to them & others). Sting had a successful solo career and was in a few movies (like 1984's "Dune"). Copeland went on to compose soundtrack music for movies (like Francis Ford Coppola's "Rumblefish") and games (like "Spyro the Dragon").
This song is from the 1983 lp "Synchronicity", which was The Police's 5th and final studio album. It was voted "Album of the Year" by Rolling Stone readers and was voted the fifth best album of 1983 in The Village Voice's year-end Pazz & Jop critics' poll. At the 1984 Grammy Awards ceremony, "Synchronicity" won the award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was nominated for Album of the Year. "Every Breath You Take" won the awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and received a nomination for Record of the Year. In essence, had it not been for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album (not to take anything away from "Thriller" because that was a terrific album in itself and deserved every accolade it got), "Synchronicity" most likely would've walked off with most of the Grammy Awards that year! It was that good!!
Fields of Gold is beautiful. Roxanne is a good one too. This song, Every Breath you Take was recently used in the Netflix feature of Stranger Things, the first season, which was set in the 80s. It was a fantastic nostalgia series..and featured many awesome 80s songs
Sting wrote the song when the band were down on the Island of Montserrat recording the album Synchronicity, he was going thru a divorce from his 1st wife & in pain. He was surprised by how people saw it as a love song, years later he said he can hear the sadness in it & understands how some could see it as that. The Police were named by the drummer/founder Stewart Copeland who said he used to get that nervous feeling whenever he was driving & saw a police car in his rearview mirror & thought it would be a good name for a band
Awesome choice guys! I love this song. I saw Sting ( the lead singer ) 23 years ago perform at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I hope you react to more of him and The Police.
This one came out when I was in high school. I remember you couldn't turn on your radio without hearing that song! Still have the CD though ... and a recording of his live concert in Tokyo they did a few years later.
Sting has so many really good songs, my favorite of them all has to be Fragile. It is stunningly beautiful. Same as Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. Just gorgeous songs by both at the top of their careers.
Their best track IMO has the longest title: ‘When the World is Running Down You Make The Best of What’s Still Around’ - not seen anyone react to that yet!
This is most played song to date on the radio with 15+ million and counting. The song won an award by BMI- which owns the biggest catalog of songs. This song became the most successful song of the 1980s. The police were the biggest band of the 1980s. The Police “Synchronicity” kicked MJ’s “Thriller” from the top spot. In 1983, the Police tour became the largest and most successful tour of that time.
When No.11 walked into the Hawkins Middle School dance hall, with that beautiful hair and dress, and the familiar music at the bakcground... Everyone who grew up in the 80s started to tear up in their eyes... 😭

One reason it may sound so familiar is that Puff Daddy sampled it for "I'll Be Missing You." I think The Police went with their name mainly because it was slightly disturbing. And in fact most of their earlier songs were intentionally disturbing. "Roxanne" is about a lonely guy trying to reform a prostitute mainly so he can have her all to himself. "Don't Stand So Close to Me" is about a teacher struggling with his sexual attraction to an underage female student. "Synchronicity II" compares a frustrated father and office worker as something dangerous like the Loch Ness Monster. "Every Step You Take" is also intentionally creepy, as it's basically a stalker song. As The Police became more famous, the lead singer Sting was actually bothered by how many couples kept telling him that this was "their" song, as he felt they were seriously misunderstanding the meaning by thinking it was romantic. So he released another song called "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" as way of saying "Noooooo! 'Every Breath' is not relationship advice!"
It makes me sad sometimes that the songs that defined my generation have been reduced to "I think this was in a movie". Oh well, at least they're remembered at all.
You could not escape this song when it came out. I was about 9 when it came out, travelling with my family, and everyone had at least one record by the Police and this song seemed be permanently on the radio and on TV. Such a dark track for such a beautiful song (Sting was thinking about his ex-wife when he wrote it and it shows). 8 weeks at number one, too...
It sounds familiar because the song was remade on "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy. Also check out another great 80s artist, the album "The Boatman's Call" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. And maybe other bands like Deacon Blue, Texas or Del Amitri.
With 60's and 70's music we didn't give much thought to "genres". If we liked it we liked whether the 3-chord rock and roll of Grand Funk Railroad or the orchestral. stylings of Procol Harum.
This is my favourite police song.. And easily the best song ever written about obsessive love.. Such thought provoking and chilling lyrics.. sung with panache by Sting.
This song is about his ex-wife, he was at a very dark period in his life, his marriage was deteriorating, the massive success of the band was taking a toll on him and his marriage.. He wrote this because he didn't want to lose her and this song just poured out of him one night Amazing band and song :)
That actually makes sense. It is or can be considered an obsession song. I think it has stalkerish vibes personally but I could see it being just about obsession. And he wrote it while he was in a dark place, I could see where that could come out.
Sting said himself it was a “Stalker” song! He said when he heard people using at their weddings it upset him because they did not understand it was about “stalking” not a love song.
Really interesting back story! Is this really true? Where did you hear about this? Probably the most perfect song I ever heard in the 80's and I remember it remained #1 in the charts for so many weeks in a row! "Stalker" song or not, I don't care! Awesome song, LOVE it!
When Sting first got into movies - "Brimstone & Treacle" - he and The Police contributed quite a lot of songs to that soundtrack; another leading UK group of the late 70s/early 80s, Squeeze, contributed one of their most popular songs "Up the Junction" to the soundtrack. The two songwriters of Squeeze - Difford/Tillbrook - were considered the Lennon/McCartney of their time. Any song by Squeeze is worth looking into, "Black Coffee in Bed" had heavy rotation on MTV.
The Police is one of the best bands ever..They had a 7 year reign. At the height of their enormous popularity, they toured for Synchronicity. They played Shea Stadium and announced it was their last show. They literally walked out on top. Surely you've heard of the lead guy Sting? They were a three man band, excellent musicians, Sting on bass, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stuart Copeland, one of the greatest drummers of all time. The song is simple, though often mistaken for a love song. It is about obsession, stalking.
Long before "Stalker" was a part of our Lexicon, The Police wrote this little ditty. We all thought it was a love song (#1 hit song at that). But, it is actually a Stalkers's theme song. The Police were surprised by our (the public's) reaction. Once, I found out the intent and Stalkers became REAL, I find I enjoy it less ...doesn't mean I don't sing along, just that the intent is all I can think of now!
Interestingly, people would mistakenly use this song at weddings thinking that it's talking about the couple's devotion to each other, not realizing that it's about stalking Something that Sting had found, still does find rather amusing
This is, believe it or not, off their final studio album in 1983. It was #1 for 8 weeks. The video is haunting - I love the use of black and white and the stand up bass cello is tremendous.
They originally had more of a Punk-ish sound, but with style. Try a few classics from their first album: Next to You So Lonely Roxanne Canary in a Coal Mine Can't Stand Losing You These are from 1978... no MTV, and only small radio stations, like college radio, played them and the other "New Wave" groundbreakers. This was pretty much underground stuff at that time.

To be fair a know of a few marriages that only happened because the guy ground down the woman of years 😂
I love the stalker's national anthem.
Death Cab for Cutie with, "I will Possess Your Heart" one upped them on the stalker theme.
I understand they got a kick out of the fact that many people play it at their wedding.
@@peterbroad6885 My understanding is that they were horrified when they heard that.
Actually it's about when Sting was eleven and he staked out a boys house for weeks til he got one, just one, opportunity to get into his unlocked garage and retrieve his stolen bike.
Other great tunes from them *Roxanne, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Message In A Bottle, Don't Stand So Close To Me, De Do Do, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Walking On The Moon, King Of Pain, Hole In My Life, Murder By Numbers, Synchronicity I&II, The Bed's Too Big Without You, Bring On The Night, Invisible Sun, Spirits In The Material World, So Lonely and Can't Stand Losing You.* Lotta good stuff here and by the way *P-Diddy* sampled this song on his tribute to *Biggie Smalls* the song *I'll Be Missing You.* Love ❤️ Peace ✌️ and Happiness 😃 Y'all !!
TL;DR other great songs from them: all
Of their songs
@@macinfloydvolk agreed
I like the 86 version of don’t stand so close to me, more than the original
Yeah then put out a their best LP, then quit! Out of the blue.
wow I forgot how many good songs they have
The Police: Sting, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland. "King of Pain", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Spirits In the Material World", "Invisible Sun", "Don't Stand So Close To Me", "Can't Stand Losing You", "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", "Message In a Bottle", "Walking on the Moon", "Roxanne"... All great tunes!
Let's not forget "Demolition Man" or "Synchronicity"
Yeah...the were pretty frickin' good, tbf! 🙂
English rock bands are legendary no other country comes close
Sting - great bass player who sings, Stewart Copland on drums - amazing hard-hitting drummer, and Andy Summers a jazz guitarist and another terrific musician. In addition to what's listed below, check out So Lonely, Tea in the Sahara, Synchronicity, Hole in my life, Murder by Numbers, so many hits!! But first listen to Roxanne which is the song that broke them in the US - amazing band!
Lead singer is Sting. Try “Every little thing she does is magic,” , “ Don’t stand so close to me”, “Roxanne” . Great reaction guys!👍🏴
Fields of gold is a good 1 too
Moon over Bourbon St, love it.
And fields of gold
...or any other song....
So many Police songs worth listening, “Walking on the Moon”, “Roxanne”, “So Lonely”, “Message in a Bottle”, “Don’t Stand so Close to Me”, “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “Synchronicity”
Five years, five albums, we're outta here. So much in so little time. Same as CCR.
So many hits in such a short time. My third favorite band of all time behind the Beatles and the Eagles
Anything from the Ghost in the Machine album or Synchronicity.
I simply JAM to "Synchronicity" on my drums. That has got to be one of my all time fave Police songs ever!!!
There's a couple synchronicity. All good though
Stalker song Sting is the singer and P Diddy did a song for Biggie called I'll be missing you using this song.
and P Diddy didn’t ask permission To use this song so he’s paying them 5,000 a day
A great storytelling song by The Police is “Synchronicity II.” The whole album “Synchronicity” is awesome. Top 5 of my fav albums.
Invisible Sun is one of their best if not the best song.... Love also Voices inside my head. And Sting is so underated as a bass player.
Invisible Sun is amazing.
He's sold millions of records for his skills. Millions of dollars for playing bass while singing.
Being a top level musician and getting paid hefty sums means you are properly rated amongst your peers.
The Police ruled MTV in the early 80's, especially with this song.
Yes. Police and Duran Duran. They were MTV bands.
I remember waiting for the world premiere for all their videos
@@Pharmerlynda-- Police were so great. All OVER MTV and 1980s radio.
I saw them in concert and REM was their opening act!
Puff Daddy and Faith Evans used this for ‘I’ll Be Missing You’ - that tribute to Biggie. ❤️
Another way of saying that is Puff Daddy desecrated this song.
Sting trying to perform with them, seemed to toss a curve at him.. he just looked so out of synch with that performance
Heard he really didn't want to do it and decided at the last min to go ahead and perform with them
Sting has said that Puffy pays him 2k PER DAY for the royalties. Puff used it without permission.
Such an awful song. I mean just completely ruined the original.
Emerging during the anarchic Punk Music era I think they just named the band with an element of being controversial and ironic.
It’s partly down to Copeland’s father, Miles Copeland senior, being head of the CIA middle east department.
For pushing the envelope, check out Be My Girl
Literally one of the greatest songs ever made.
and the most misunderstood.
Yeah it was actually more about stalking and being obsessed
The stalker's anthem.
Yet ironically a song played as the first dance at many weddings. 😂😂😂
Amber's dreamy facial expressions are priceless.
Their best song imo: Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.
"Fields of Gold" is another good one. You should check it out, then the beautiful cover by Eva Cassidy.
Thank goodness someone threw in "Field's Of Gold ".. love that song so much.
Erm... Fields of Gold is a Sting song, not a The Police song.
Can you hear his voice singing "I want my, I want my MTV" singing with Dire Straights, 'Money for Nothin'???
You guys NEED to check out Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic!!! I think you’ll like this one
amazing song... I personally love "So lonely"
Yes! They'd definitely enjoy the energy of this one.
Absolutely my favorite song, following close 2nd Invisible Sun, which few people mentioned this song
The fact this song is so popular at weddings is so funny to me. It is anything but a sweet love song if you pay attention to the lyrics.
Dominic Miller also deserves a footnote. Although he was not a member of The Police, he has been brilliant on guitar throughout Sting’s solo career.
Supposedly The Police were so acrimonious while recording this album, they couldn't even be in the same room without fighting. And yet they cranked out this masterpiece.
This song was used in the 1999 Julia Roberts movie The Runaway Bride. It was also used in the movies Risky Business (1983), Speed 2: Cruise Control (1987), The Replacements (2000), 50 First Dates (2004), Young at Heart (2007), What Just Happened (2008), and Heartbeats (2010).
My favorite 80's band. So many great songs. This song is in A LOT of movies.
Police - Message in a Bottle - Roxanne - Don't stand so close to me - Every little thing she does is Magic - Wrapped around your finger - King of Pain - Synchronicity
Demolition Man
To me the 70s The Police were out standing , ROXANNE , MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE and WALKING ON THE MOOD , ENJOY THE 70s JAY AND AMBER ,, I like your videos a lot ENJOY your ones from the 70s THE MOST , Take care
And one of the best drummers in existence - check out some of their reggae style songs, like 'Walking on the Moon
I think I was thinking of Big Brother, of surveillance and control.” It’s about the government watching everything you do…
Synchronicity 1 & 2, don’t stand so close to me, every little thing she does is magic, Roxanne, message in a bottle, spirits in the material world
The Police beat MJ for best song of the year in 1983 with this song; that is how popular this song was! It's been in multiple movies and been covered by so many artists, I couldn't even give you a count. Even huge singers like Phil Collins and Annie Lennox have covers of this song. That's how overwhelming popular it was in the 80's. It's been featured in Stranger Things twice already, too. Lol :)
The lyrics to this song came to Sting in a dream.
My personal fav of theirs is "Wrapped around your finger". That is an ABSOLUTE vibe.
Most excellent suggestion. The song is brilliant 🙌🏼🖖🏻
YES !!! 😍😄🥰 A true masterpiece ! 😀

Not many people are.

The lead singer's name is Sting. He went on to a solo career.
His name is Gordon Sumner and known as Sting.
Sting is also an actor.

This was a popular wedding song back in the 80's, so many people mistook it's meaning! Haha, gotta wonder how they felt when they found out! 😂😂😂
Yeah, I could never understand why people did that either when it's basically a song about him stalking his ex-wife 🤨😆
Yes!

"Don't Stand So Close to Me"
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"
"Wrapped Around Your Finger"

“I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership,” Sting said in 1983. The Police frontman was speaking during a sold-out arena tour of the US. Thanks to the “nasty little song”, which had just spent two months at the top of the Billboard singles chart, the trio were acclaimed as the world’s biggest band. They were also on the verge of breaking up. Taken from the Financial Times in 2018.
In 1983 , I saw them live in France. Unforgettable , my friends ! Do you know who is Mylène Farmer ?
The EVIL is the Vows, she breaks!
Sting later wrote the song If You Love Somebody Set Them Free hoping to counterbalance the darkness of this one.
And that makes it hilarious that it's consistently been one of the most popular wedding songs ever since it was released.
@@pascalmarfaing1690 I saw them in Toronto in 1983. It was at a show called the Police Picnic at the CNE grounds. It was a great time.
Fields of Gold was always my favorite
The Police was a 3-man-band: Brits Sting (lead vocals & bass) & Andy Summers (guitar), and American Stuart Copeland (drummer & younger brother of a manager to them & others). Sting had a successful solo career and was in a few movies (like 1984's "Dune"). Copeland went on to compose soundtrack music for movies (like Francis Ford Coppola's "Rumblefish") and games (like "Spyro the Dragon").
Sting's given name is Gordon Mathew Sumner.
@@kennyadkins6605 Yep. :-) ...and he was once a teacher.
You cannot imagine how big The Police were in the '80s.
Fields of Gold is beautiful. Roxanne is a good one too. This song, Every Breath you Take was recently used in the Netflix feature of Stranger Things, the first season, which was set in the 80s. It was a fantastic nostalgia series..and featured many awesome 80s songs
I love Fields of Gold. (With the Police, I'm fond of Da Do Do, Do)
Sting admitted this song was about stalking.
You guy are just so stinkin' cute!!!! Love seeing you listen to music that is "outside the box". Again...you guys are so genuine!
Yes! Yes! Yes! I love The Police! Sting is from this band and you HAVE to listen to his song "Desert Rose"!
100%🤠👍✌
Hall and Oats has a song called “Private Eyes” is kind of catchy like this song.
And Hall n Oats song Shes Gone from 1973 Their 1st smash hit from them 70s
Yes, very catchy (but they all were). Same theme done dark - The Who - 'I can see for miles'.
Keeping up the stalker theme 😀
Awesome choice guys! I love this song.
I saw Sting ( the lead singer ) 23 years ago perform at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I hope you react to more of him and The Police.
This one came out when I was in high school. I remember you couldn't turn on your radio without hearing that song! Still have the CD though ... and a recording of his live concert in Tokyo they did a few years later.
Yep- he was obsessed! But the crazy lyrics are set to such pretty music! The Police have a lot of great songs!
Sting has so many really good songs, my favorite of them all has to be Fragile. It is stunningly beautiful. Same as Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. Just gorgeous songs by both at the top of their careers.
If you do the police you gotta do Roxanne!!
Absolutely

she DID HER RESEARCH !!!! thank you... 😊
One reason it may sound so familiar is that Puff Daddy sampled it for "I'll Be Missing You."
I think The Police went with their name mainly because it was slightly disturbing.
Makes me think of how Eddie Vedder had to tell people to stop thinking Better Man was a love song.
Brilliant recap! Thanks!
It makes me sad sometimes that the songs that defined my generation have been reduced to "I think this was in a movie". Oh well, at least they're remembered at all.
Yeah, this was like the #1 song of 1983, I think. Everyone knew it.
First concert I ever went to. Opening act was the GoGo's!! Awesome!!
This is one of my favorite songs of all-time. I love the fact that he only sings the title of the song once, the very first line.
"By, By Puff Daddy" ? NO. song is written by Gordon Sumner aka Sting.
Yes and later on remixed by Puff Daddy as I mentioned. ua-cam.com/video/NKMtZm2YuBE/v-deo.html
He wrote this because he didn't want to lose her and this song just poured out of him one night
Amazing band and song :)
That actually makes sense. It is or can be considered an obsession song. I think it has stalkerish vibes personally but I could see it being just about obsession. And he wrote it while he was in a dark place, I could see where that could come out.
Yep... He defined this stage of his life as the most successful as a musician but emotionally the most miserable...
All others who just think their own way go in to the direction of stalking or controlling other...
Good taste Edwina.
This song appears on at least 8 different movie soundtracks, including Runaway Bride, Risky Business, 50 First Dates, and others.
STALKING! How can You miss that!!
Sting...An Englishman in New York.
Such a complex song with great orchestration.
the lead singer Gordon Sumner AKA sting, Was married and soon divorced and his ex wife was the one stalking him
Very interesting!

Interestingly, people would mistakenly use this song at weddings thinking that it's talking about the couple's devotion to each other, not realizing that it's about stalking
Something that Sting had found, still does find rather amusing
I can't tell you HOW MANY SONGS are now ruined for me because of finding out what those songs are truely about... SMH
‘Set Them Free’ is their response to the reaction to this song..
The lead singer is Sting. He's very famous. Huge solo career. He plays the stand-up bass.
This is, believe it or not, off their final studio album in 1983. It was #1 for 8 weeks. The video is haunting - I love the use of black and white and the stand up bass cello is tremendous.
Like you Amber I also learned about music that I love from my parents (father) on the radio. Mainly 60’s, 70’s, & 80’s
They originally had more of a Punk-ish sound, but with style. Try a few classics from their first album:
Next to You
So Lonely
Roxanne
Canary in a Coal Mine
Can't Stand Losing You
These are from 1978... no MTV, and only small radio stations, like college radio, played them and the other "New Wave" groundbreakers.
This was pretty much underground stuff at that time.
