100% - I thought this was a caring song for the longest time, but I had a mental switch and it's absolutely totally and completely a stalker song. So dark.
I remember Sting commenting on that fact at one point. He was being interviewed on a morning show I think, and talked about how people would come up to him and tell him this was their wedding song and his response was always, "Um...good luck."
It’s more than "just" a stalker song though. Sting wrote it during a very painful divorce, from a very dark place. So while it is stalking on a literal level, it’s really about an all-consuming jealousy and an incapability of letting go of someone who’s already gone. So the fact that someone would play it at their wedding is even more ironic than it seems: A song about a painful divorce, and how shitty that feels, and how shitty thoughts you have over it. Played at your wedding. Great…
Puff Daddy did not ask to use the sample and Sting sued, so for decades now Sting gets 100 percent of the revenues from both versions. Sting said Puff did eventually ask permission, but after the fact. He also said he still continues to be paid $2000 a day after all these years by Puff for the use of the sample. Lesson of this story is.. don’t take without asking and paying, or it will cost you a lot more in the long run.
*Sting himself has said this song is written about a lost love, jealousy, and the obsession that takes over in the most negative way. He is so confused by how so many have thought this was some beautiful love song. He told a funny story where a couple told him this song was their 1st song to dance to at their wedding. Sting mustered up a half smile and just said "well, good luck."*

The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were part of the British new wave scene & they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae & jazz. They have had a lot of hits such as "Message In A Bottle", "Roxanne", "Can't Stand Losing You", "Walking On The Moon", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" etc. Sting went on to have a big solo career.
At my age it’s hard to believe people have never heard this song before. This song was every where when it was released, radio, MTV & award shows. And it has been sampled and used in several movies as well.
This is towards the end of the group's glorious ride by which time they had developed a more sophisticated sound and production. Their early music from the late '70s was a unique blend of reggae, punk, and pop. (BTW, reggae and ska were big in the UK in that era.) They were exceptional from the start. I'm an old guy (67) and I hate when I hear "sample." When I was young you simply were not allowed to take bits and pieces from other songs. Now this sampling thing is common but people my age call it stealing. I think it just shows where the real talent was, that is with the people who wrote lyrics and music. Today it's just not anywhere near the same.
Exactly...they steal from others' hard work, and they act like it's their creation. In this digital information age, it is VERY EASY to let everyone know that you took it from someone else. But they don't. I"m so glad Luke Combs lets everyone know Fast Car is Tracy Chapman's song, and doesn't represent the song as his own creation. To his credit, he goes over the top to make sure everyone knows...heheh...but other artists don't have to go as far as him, but today's sampling singers should not act like their sampled songs are their own creation.
Gotta listen to their most iconic songs: Roxanne; Everything She does is Magic; and Don’t Stand So Close to Me! And don’t stop there as they have a very deep catalog!
Synchronicity was a great album! I was 9 when it came out and I wore out the cassette tape on my Walkman! This, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger and Murder by Number were my favorites!
Every Breath You Take was the number one most popular song of the 80s. Musically quite different from other Police songs. Stewart Copeland, the drummer was very angry at being asked to play simple, like a drum machine. His style is to fill up the space and be all over the place.
It's sort of amazing to me, seeing people say your version is different. This was the version of those who created it. I guess I'm a purist, I really don't understand sampling. That you don't understand the undercurrent of this song speaks volumes. People write songs as a whole piece, actually. They were a huge group, and Sting a very complex person, and writer. It'd be amusing to hear your take on a song like Synchronicity. Sorry, sometimes I despair...
@@danieljohnston1798 "Sampling" to me shows a lack of creativity and laziness on the part of the person doing the sampling. Many Rap and Hip Hop "artists" (cough) sample a great many of the the songs they record. It's different when someone re-records a song and makes it a tribute to the original artist (e.g. when Whitney Houston re-recorded the Dolly Parton song, "I will always Love you," utterly magisterial).
Have you heard "I'll Be Missing You"? If so, you'd know it really doesn't resemble much of the original other than the melody & interpolation. The original is about stalking someone as has been alluded to - the remixed version is a dedication to one of the most well-known rappers in history by his best friend and his wife discussing missing him after being killed at 25 years old. In your view, are covers by Elvis, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and plenty of other major hit records plagiarising too? Given "I'll Be Missing You' spent eleven weeks atop the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in 15 other countries while being one of the best selling singles of all time - It's pretty "amusing" you're unable to appreciate various artistry without being so condescending.
It’s the same song though, same chord progression, same melody. Changing the words just makes it a parody. I’m sure it’s a nice song, but it’s still Every breath you take with different words
I saw The Police one time. It was 1979 at a little venue that probably held 300-400 people. They were touring for their first album. It was a great show. Since they didn't have a lot of original songs yet, they filled out the setlist with some Ska and Reggie. The ticket price? $5 Sting is one of those musicians who can do everything. I think he wrote every song The Police recorded, though other band members contributed of course.
Stewart Copeland the drummer is an American from Alexandria, Virginia. He is well known as a composer for movies, video games and orchestral music. ‘Desert Rose’ and ‘Fields of Gold’ are great songs by Sting (Gordon Sumner), he was a school teacher in Newcastle, the kids nicknamed him ‘Sting’ as he sometimes wore striped sweaters.
This is a complete song, containing many chord progressions throughout the verse, bridge, chorus, etc. Rather than just a repeated sample with some talking over it, that was the Puff Daddy 2pac tribute.
"Wrapped Around Your Finger" is my personal favorite from The Police, that is my suggestion for a future reaction. They have a lot of great songs though.
i'm on my Bars & Barbells Binge whilst you guys are taking a break and i am loving rewatching your old reactions. Miss you guys but in the mean time these reactions are pure gold!
How unfortunate that you only stumbled across such an original band having heard it reprised by lesser artists. What else by the Police? How about hit singles such as Message In a Bottle, So Lonely, Don't Stand So Close To Me, Walking On The Moon and Roxanne? There's some great tracks on their albums Regatta De Blanc and Zenyatta Mondata too - I really like Born In The Fifties.
Sting once said he was suprised that this was considered a romantic song. Some people even had it played at their wedding reception. He said it was about a stalker.
Both of you are wonderful and young. The so called "artists" who have to rely on samples to create their music is just testament that they are not musicians and can't write their own material. With that said, The Police were part of the punk movement, but it's members came from jazz and rock and roll. Sting was a bass player for a jazz band, Andy Summers was part of the 60's British invasions and Stuart Copeland was an American who found himself in England. All of them are virtuosos on their instruments. It just shows me how watered down top 40 radio is when I heard you guys refer to this as a "Diddy" song. Keep going guys. There is an entire world of music to explore. Kudos to both of you.
This song is from their 5th studio album "Synchronicity" which there is another song by the same name #2 that is one of my favorites. But you have to go back to check their early music videos, they have so many hit songs. I still cry over the fact that my roommates asked me to go to a concert at our school in late 1980 in which I didn't know the band. I actually told them no with these words out of my own mouth, "Who wants to see a band called The Police?"
This song was about jealousy, quite dark. The Police has a very diverse catalogue, many of their songs are iconic. "Everything she does is magic" is an upbeat song I think you would love❤
Not really - most of the best samples on classic hiphop were taken from 60s and 70s funk - just one Brixton band, Cymande was sampled multiple times, unlike the Police
Their early stuff is New Wave/Reggae it’s amazing! The other members are so good it’s not just Sting Stewart Copeland is a brilliant drummer who can play on anything Andy Summers guitar rifts are legendary
It can't be understated how huge this song was the year it was released. This is considered one of the best songs in rock history, and this album (Synchronicity) is also considered a classic.
This song is very dark. Talks about a stalker. Fantastic song though. The bass beat is incredible. Thanks for the review. Synchrony has also been sampled by hip hop.
Every Breath You Take - It was always playing in the background when we were playing card games but I never paid attention to it. It would be years later when I was cleaning a room and it came on the radio and i decided to listen to the words. It started sounding creepy so I asked my brother about it.... Stalker 101. ..... All that that time I thought it was a love song like so many others. It was even played at weddings.
It is the most played song on the radio to date- it is one of the biggest selling singles of all time. It is one of the biggest pop song ever- in my book, the ultimate pop song ever written
The Police I believe had the song essentially but needed Andy Summers the guitarist to come up with a line, so they played what they had and Andy came up with that beautiful guitar line you hear, when he finished I hear that the the studio engineers all stood and applauded him, its become iconic since. The song is I believe on 2 levels, one a pleasant longing, the other someones obsessive view on a relationship and who can't let go.....
From this same album, be sure to check out : - King Of Pain - Wrapped Around Your Finger - Tea In The Sahara - Mother (total Norman Bates vibes) - Synchronicity - Synchronicity II (Many Miles Away) - Walking In Your Footsteps Other Police hits : - Roxanne - Don't Stand So Close To Me - Walking On The Moon - Message In A Bottle - Can't Stand Losing You - Invisible Sun And a couple of deep cuts : - Behind My Camel - Voices In My Head
People weren't locked in a box back then when it comes to labeling music. It was more diverse and took influences from everything. Thats what made them and others famous worldwide. People from different cultures and backgrounds got something familiar and different when they listen to the music. Dont lock groups in a box from back then.
Every breath You Take wasn't just one of their biggest hits, it was by a million miles their biggest hit and best song, I very much doubt there's no person on earth who hasn't heard this song or liked it, I can't believe that anyone could hate this, it is one of the greatest songs of all time

Sting has said, many times, that he doesn't understand why so many people call it a love song, the song is actually about someone stalking their ex!
This song was about jealousy, quite dark. The Police has a very diverse catalogue, many of their songs are iconic. "Everything she does is magic" is an upbeat song I think you would love❤
If 80s music didn't exist, the rap you grew up on would have sounded entirely different.
Not really - most of the best samples on classic hiphop were taken from 60s and 70s funk - just one Brixton band, Cymande was sampled multiple times, unlike the Police
I like it so much better due to no auto tune back then, that’s what made 80’s music so great you had to actually be able to sing to be successfull
Their early stuff is New Wave/Reggae it’s amazing!
The other members are so good it’s not just Sting
Stewart Copeland is a brilliant drummer who can play on anything
Andy Summers guitar rifts are legendary
It can't be understated how huge this song was the year it was released. This is considered one of the best songs in rock history, and this album (Synchronicity) is also considered a classic.
I miss those days... watching MTV and never thinking for a moment that artists creating music and playing instruments was going to fade away.
Police great song
One of my all time favourite songs (despite the stalker theme!)
If nothing else, a most excellent drum & bass line.
1983... these guys were way ahead of their time, awesome
This song is very dark. Talks about a stalker. Fantastic song though. The bass beat is incredible. Thanks for the review. Synchrony has also been sampled by hip hop.
the police have many very good songs which were all hits,
Every Breath You Take - It was always playing in the background when we were playing card games but I never paid attention to it. It would be years later when I was cleaning a room and it came on the radio and i decided to listen to the words. It started sounding creepy so I asked my brother about it.... Stalker 101. ..... All that that time I thought it was a love song like so many others. It was even played at weddings.
One of the best ever
Jeez I feel old when people haven't heard this.
It is the most played song on the radio to date- it is one of the biggest selling singles of all time. It is one of the biggest pop song ever- in my book, the ultimate pop song ever written
This major hit for the Police, has been covered by many, many artists since the Police recorded it. From pop, to country to hip hop etc…
Great band some bangners too like Don,t stand so close to me ❤❤❤
One of the most beautiful stalking songs. If you consider the words this song is not really about the usual kind of love.
Legendary
What past artists have done can never be achieved, unattainable talents.
At that time they were at the peak of their career and certainly the most popular rock band in the world 🌎 at that time
The police cannot be put in a box , play around with different genre's of music reggae , jazz , funk, punk & world music
Yes. This is the real deal. The ORIGINAL.
Two English guys, the drummer is American. This album, and particularly, this song created millions of 'Police fans'.
Cant understand how someone can hear the cover of this and not the original.
Great song, another one to check out is Invisible Sun from the time fun. Enjoy your channel, and your journey to the music I grew up in.
It’s all about Stewart Copeland on drums Definitely to 10 drummer, Andy Summers guitar playing is so tasteful and of course Sting is Sting
JUST ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE AMAZINGLY GREAT 3 MAN ROCK BANDS YOU GUYS! 💯😊LED BY STING ( GORDON SUMNER )
It always gives me a chuckle when I see the window cleaner... 👀
The snare drum is using an effect called gated reverb. Which was real popular back then.
Anytime hip-hop samples something older, it’s the best part of the song.
From this same album, be sure to check out :
- King Of Pain
- Wrapped Around Your Finger
- Tea In The Sahara
- Mother (total Norman Bates vibes)
- Synchronicity
- Synchronicity II (Many Miles Away)
- Walking In Your Footsteps
Other Police hits :
- Roxanne
- Don't Stand So Close To Me
- Walking On The Moon
- Message In A Bottle
- Can't Stand Losing You
- Invisible Sun
And a couple of deep cuts :
- Behind My Camel
- Voices In My Head
No.1 In the UK, US, Canada, etc. Actually it did win the Grammy for Song of the Year.
After punk there was "New wave" . The Police was part of that genre 😎🇧🇻
I was in Banff Canada 1983 driving when this song came on the radio.
People weren't locked in a box back then when it comes to labeling music. It was more diverse and took influences from everything. Thats what made them and others famous worldwide. People from different cultures and backgrounds got something familiar and different when they listen to the music. Dont lock groups in a box from back then.
Probably the biggest band in the world, late 70's/early 80's.
Every breath You Take wasn't just one of their biggest hits, it was by a million miles their biggest hit and best song, I very much doubt there's no person on earth who hasn't heard this song or liked it, I can't believe that anyone could hate this, it is one of the greatest songs of all time
One of the hardest guitar parts to play without getting finger cramps. Andy Summers had one hell of a finger span.
Awesome
YOUR GUYS REACTIONS ARE PRICELESSSS ON THIS ONE FOR SURE! 💯😊I ALWAYS LOVE IT WHEN REACTORS KNOW A CERTAIN SONG BUT NOT THE BAND THAT DID IT!😊SO THESE GUYS HAD SEVERAL RADIO HITS : MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE, ROXANNE, DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME, THERE'S 3 GREAT ONES PHIL & SAM! 👍 TAKE CARE
Wrapped around your Finger is a must listen.
Note that this wasn't "covered": it was "stolen". And it is NOT a love song. this is a song about stalking.
