Hey mate, I just wanted to say thank you. Before your tutorial I managed to wire in my reverse cam, It was cutting off with engine running due to voltage issues. I didn’t have a clue how relays work, but then I saw your video and I have a much better clue. Thank you for your great tutorial, I followed it exact and now my car works flawlessly with my rear camera, fortunately we have the same car so was easier! Thanks man!
Thanks Raymond for this video! It really helped me troubleshoot flickering issue with my new backup camera. :)
Perfect video Ray this is how I do my customers car's also a thing to note not many cars have fuse boxes in the rear of a car then you can use wires from 12v cigarette lighter points I've even used a relay and got power from a rear wiper harness.
Alternatively bring a wire from the fuse box from the front or from the battery.
Thank you so much Sir !
I managed to install the back up camera perfectly like it was stock in my C-Coupe. Everything worked fine until I started the engine an the Camera shuts down after 5 seconds. I couldn't figure out why the f*ck my camera was acting like this.
After watching this video, my camera is now working like a charm.
I really appreciate your work and sharing this video with us. Without your video I couldn't figure out the right solution for my problem. Thank you.
Keep it up man, I'm a subscribe now and enjoying your vids !
o0XenonMusic0o Damn that's a great comment. Happy to hear it helped you, and welcome to the community!
Thanks for sharing. Helped me as well on my Tiguan with flickering video on back camera when engine is on. 🍺👍
Good video Raymond, I'll be doing this to my 2012 Dodge Ram.
Hey Raymond thanks your video help me get rid of distortion on my backup camera....but I have a question how would you use the relay when installing a front camera? Especially since you no longer need the reverse trigger wire to go to 86?? I attempted it without wiring anything to 86 but camera wouldn’t work...any suggestions?
I bought a relay online from the link you have and it has a yellow wire on it and I wired everything according to your video and it showed a black screen then when I unplugged the ground from the relay to the round on the car it makes the video show fine but it’s fuzzy still and when I plug the relays wire ground back on the cars ground it makes it black, what’s my issue here did I get the wrong relay or am I not splitting the camera ground and the relay ground right ?
Hi Raymond and others, am a bit confused about the wiring. Where exactly numbers 85 and 86 will be connected please?
This works, but it is way, *_way_* harder than it needs to be.
Instead of using a relay to control the 12v supply for your backup camera, just replace your incandescent backup bulbs with LED bulbs, and power the backup camera the simple way, from the same wire as the backup bulbs.
The problem you're trying to solve is that the backup lights draw so much current that they pull down the 12v supply to a lower voltage than the minimum supply voltage that the backup camera requires. That's called power supply "droop."
A good LED bulb draws only about 1/8 as much power as an equivalent incandescent bulb (and a crappy cheap LED bulb draws even less). So replace your incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs and the power supply droop will be reduced by about 87%. That's almost always sufficient to solve the problem.
If you want to test whether this approach will solve your problem, before you order LED bulbs on eBay, just remove the backup light bulbs, and verify that the camera now works properly. In most cases, even removing just one backup light bulb is sufficient to make the camera work properly. If eliminating the load of one incandescent bulb is sufficient to make the backup camera work properly, then swapping out your incandescent backup bulbs for LED backup bulbs will *_definitely_* solve the problem, without resorting to a relay. If you have to remove both incandescent backup bulbs to get the camera to work properly, then replacing the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs will *_probably_* solve the problem, though it's not guaranteed. (If removing both bulbs doesn't make your backup camera work (during daytime!), that's very strange, so look for a wiring error.)
Note: when replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs you should match the colors. So for backup light bulbs (white) get white LED bulbs. For brake lights / tail lights, get red ones (and don't go cheap on those!). For turn signals get yellow/amber or red, as appropriate for your car. Do not just use white bulbs for everything, as you might do with incandescents.
For my LED backup lights, I used white bulbs with 24 "5050" LEDs, from eBay: they have six "5050" LEDs on the end, and 18 more on the sides. But 4xCOB LED bulbs or CREE-based bulbs (with a lens on the end) would probably also be very good.
*_Note:_* The above discussion does not apply to "CANBUS" ("CAN bus") bulbs. They draw (waste!) a lot of extra current, to avoid spurious "dead bulb" indicators on the dash. If your car displays a warming when a back-up light bulb is missing, then you might need a CANBUS bulb; otherwise, *_avoid_* them. A CANBUS bulb still might draw less current than an incandescent, but it will draw a lot more than a regular LED bulb, and so it is less likely to solve problems with the backup camera.
Tried removing both backup bulbs, the flickering still persists...
@@henkeweimedal6448 same here: nice theory, but it doesn't change anything.
Hi bro, is this also possible for a wireless back up camera? I’m having the same problems on my 2007 c200 but the camera that I have is not wired other than the positive wire tapped to the reverse light and the negative wire to the body ground. Appreciate your reply! Thanks!
It would had been nice to see the before and after. Other than that not bad. Thank you for sharing.
Alright! This worked for me. Everything seems to be working fine, except for some diagonal white lines running through the screen. My guess is that the power from the cigarette lighter isn't clean enough, or that I should be running the ground wire from the camera to the ground wire from the relay and then run that to the ground bolt on the chassis instead of running the camera and relay separately to the same ground bolt. Anyone have an idea?
Thanks for the video! Installed a camera on my mk5 VW with aftermarket radio and would only get picture with key on engine not running, once engine was running just a black screen. Did your relay hook up and voila camera works when car is running. Saved me a bunch of time and headaches trouble shooting!!!
That's correct Vws and Vauxhall Astra/zafiras gave me the Same problem I just used a relay.
My VW passat b6 2009 didn't give me any problems I'm using parking sensors and a reverse camera off the same signal wire.
I have same problem on my Seat Leon 2006, i tried relay, and at first it goes ok, but again there are noise and jumping picture. I used constant 12V from fuse of lighter, and the rest same like you, but still problems... And what i can see, led bulbs on camera are stay on when i turn contacy on my car... Anybody can help?

i’m the only one after i did all the fit of the revers camera i did and the relay and after i turn my engine on i put R and still not clear image or sometimes is black but i can see the gauge lines what can be wrong guys i got almost 12v i check it

Hello Ray, thank you for your awesome info and tutorials!!! Question: do u prefer (based on results/clarity etc) the capacitor (previous video) or the relay install to remove the distortion from the back up camera?
Many thanks :)
Relay all the way. Unless it's a BMW then capacitor
Thank you :))) Keep on, keeping on ! Be safe and well.
Hello Ray - I have installed the relay wired exactly like in this video (thank you !!!) with my back up camera and while the car is off in accessory mode and put in reverse (engine off) there is no interference. I start the engine and put car in reverse there is interference (fuzzy lines) in monitor. Damn Volvo’s!
I purchased a capacitor (Car Backup Camera Filter, Auto 12V DC Power Rectifier for Reverse Camera Anti-Interference, Universal Camera Filter Rectifier for BMW Audi Benz VW For www.amazon.com/dp/B088H4Y9H2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_B4CFhoclpRNTD)
How would I and to what pins on the relay would I install the same capacitor(anti interference device) in your previous video?
Thanks bud,
Jordan
Can i use 12v from cigarette lighter in trunk?
It seems a bit fuzzy still is it because i don’t have the negative to the ground from the relay ? When u have it plugged in it makes screen black
Can you please email a photo of what you did, let me know what your wire colors are.

Hey +Reymond Urias I connected my back up camera in my car. its a pyle plcm4550. I hard wired the rear view mirror to the fuse box using a fuse tap. Used a 10amp fuse as the original fuse and a 7.5amp for the camera itself. When the car is on I can see one of the light on the rear view mirror is on (when connected to the video cable). Unfortunately no display is on when the car is in reverse. What could be the problem. Can you help me out.
+raj4all2007 Sounds like your mirror has power. I would check out the backup camera and video cable
Thanks.. Fixed it. The splice connectors didnt do their job well. So i had to take them out and connect the wires directly. Now I have a working back up camera.
+raj4all2007 hey how about that. Happy to hear you fixed it
Hey Raymond, or anyone that can answer. If I have access to both a capacitor and a relay, which will work out better?
Relay.
Hey Raymond another great video as I was having the noise issue. And searching amazon couldn't purchase the capacitor. So this video was just the thing I needed too get everything working correctly.... Thanks again for your many helpful videos bro...your the best and its just fucking real science bitches!!!!!.... LoL
Dear friend Raymond. I have VW Tiguan I fixed aftermarket rear camera and when engine is on the image screen showing flickering Video horizontal lines. Please help what shall I do?
This or a capacitor I have a video for both. Also check for a clean ground
I'm looking for how to make my Garmin nuvi cam stay power on (Park Mode) after turning off engine without draining my battery

Good video..would a relay help with scrolling lines or inline capacitor be better? I’m pretty convinced it’s leds or possibly hid’s added all myself. It just started it out of the blue I unplugged at rear some moisture in main camera reverse and brake light connection. Anyway cleaned it dried it reconnected worked for one day but doing it again. Any thoughts sir?? Oh Ford F-250 2014 OEM camera new replaced with OEM last week. So it’s good just aftermarket VLeds I think???
Sounds like your aftermarket LEDs are causing the problem try taking them out and seeing if the problem happens again if it does switch to a different brand of lights
@@RaymondUrias Ok sir. I’m going to try your suggestion I will keep you posted. Chasing electrical is difficult but I have lots of experience with leds and voltage changes. Some say it’s poor quality on Fords end the shielded wire for camera feed is suspected to get interference easily. Might ground the reverse lights to clean chassis with a screw.
@@trent1523 some LEDs and HIDS emit a frequency that can interference with cameras. This is why if you take a video of LEDs in a car they look like they are strobing. They do sell RF shield tape but honestly it won't do anything if the camera can see the led light.
Do u have a video showing the fuzzyness? Mine looks like a black and white tv. Will this sort it?
Black and White sounds like a camera issue. Fuzzy looks like the ch 3 on TV... Almost like snow and moving lines or rolling lines
Hi. I understand your video when I'm only powering two 12v devices, e.g. camera and audio headunit. But what if I have three? Rear camera, audio headunit, and a underseat active speaker.
+Michael Vincent Rosal What are you trying to install?

Hi Raymond, do you have any idea what relay I can use in Australia? Did you just replace fuse 71 with a 3A fuse?
Would this work? www.jaycar.com.au/automotive-fused-relay-spst-30a/p/SY4077
@@kevintrac2821 that's a pretty cool relay, but a bit of over kill since you will already be using an add a fuse at the fuse box. The add a fuse kept the original fuse and added in a 3a for the camera. Honestly any auto parts store should have a basic 5 prong relay they aren't 🦄
Cheers, did you just replace fuse 71 with a 3A fuse? I was thinking this relay would allow me to bypass the
add a fuse" stage
Never downgrade a fuse here a video I made a while back

Hi bro so I found the stupid problem!!!!!! So my truck 0bviously doesn't have easy access to the rear because obviously the cabin isnt hooked up to the trunk bed so I ran the RCA cable under the truck and I found the old RCA GOT BURNED from the wire touching something hot under the truck. I tested with new YELLOW RCA and it works NICE so i have found a better place to rub RCA so I'm good as gold thanks again man
GamerGods Broadcasts happy to hear that you solved the mystery!
Raymond Urias yea man thanks A lot I hooked up the relay as well and I see a big difference in quality and performance of the camera compared to running it off directly from the reverse bulb power big thanks man.
Did you just cut the reverse camera plug off altogether.??and just hard wire it?
joe lane no lol good no. Email me your address I'll send you a relay it looks like you are struggling
Raymonduriasjr@gmail.com
I bought the USA RELAY online but it has a yellow cord in it the one in your video doesn’t, does this matter ? Or should I buy the Europe made relay that’s the one that didn’t have a yellow extra cord. Please let me know
The yellow is in the middle you can just press it out or don't use it at all. I have text up in this video that shows at that pin is not used
Raymond Urias easy I can pop that sucker out then lol and then one other question I have the black ground not connected to the ground camera and the ground camera straight to the cars ground and it works great then when I have the ground relay cord touching the cars ground with the cameras ground it makes the backup screen all black, should I leave the ground wire from the relay not plugged in?
Raymond Urias thank you for your response and useful videos helps a lot man!
Ok..so will I need this just to hook a backup camera to my bmw??? Thanks.
Yes for a BMW you will need it. Each BMW is different depending on the add ons you will have to check with a tester for the +12v reverse and ground
+Raymond Urias ..I will certainly look in to this..thank you....Joe
Hi can I use the ground from the reverse bulb for the relay and camera ground??
GamerGods Broadcasts yes you can
Raymond Urias hi it's not working still and I hooked it up right I believe.
#86 to reverse bulb positive+
#30 to 12v positive (I used cigarette lighter power)
#85 to Reverse Camera Ground and reverse bulb ground
#87 to reverse camera positive+
It's a 40amp 30amp relay, I have a Nissan frontier, it's connected directly to the cigarette lighter positive wire getting constant 12v. Doubled checked all connections, reverse lights are working and cigarette lighter is working so everything is getting power, I'm very confused as to why it isn't functioning
Raymond Urias hi I hooked up everything with the relay but it still acts up like before which is strange... my display is a rearview camera with a screen inside. When I go in reverse the camera doesn't show. It only shows if I'm in reverse and disconnect then reconnect the power to the rearview mirror also the camera is still fuzzy
Hi Raymond, I have 2012 mercedes C 300. I got problem with the capacitor as what you told me in the other vido. I looked up the capacitor but i couldnt find it. can you please find me a capacitor on Amazon becaues i live in the US and I dont wanna do all this work.

I installed a aftermaket head unit JVC 730BT to my super duty 2014 I put in an aftermarket back up camera by metra i put in a relay wired in correctly it worked fine for about 6 months bow its just black I have power at the trigger wired i have power at the constant and the camera is grounded i hear the relay click I changed the camera still nothing i changed the relay nothing changed wiring nothin any ideas
Was your car battery replaced? Even if the answer is no I would check the settings on JVC, they have the tendency to reset. If that's not it I would get a multimeter and just double check the voltage pre and post relay
The battery was replaced and it worked after battery changed. I was Backing up and it stopped working. I have 12 volts at the constant. I have 12 volts going to camera, i got 11.6 on the positive side of trigger switch. on the head unit it say av in on, av out off? do you think I smoked the camera? the inline fuse is like a 15 amp, i know you video said 3. Thanks for your quick response
15amp is way too big of a fuse. There is a chance that the goose could be cooked. Order another camera from Amazon and give it a shot. Also please check the ground connection to make sure it's good you can use a multimeter it should read no more than .03
think I cooked the wiring harness too? Thank you very much go with a 3 amp fuse?
Raymond
I smoked the camera got a new one today and it worked dropped the fuse size down to a 3 hoping that was the cause. Thank you for your help look forward to more videos
I have. A mercedes Benz e class .
I have bought a capacitor .
But not sure after watching this vid .
What will be better . Capacitor or relay .?.
Great vid btw
Relay
@@RaymondUrias thank you for the reply . Can I ask what would be the difference ?
@@expressdiy6956 of relay provides constant power once it is switched it'll give you a clean 12 volt.
A capacitor holds the charge and tries to keep the level consistent to 12 volt. Unfortunately the problem with most European cars is the signal from the reverse cable comes in waves and these waves will make a backup camera not function. Even for some capacitors it could be too much
@@RaymondUrias I really appreciate the quick helpful response . I am gonna subscribe thank you for your help and found your video very informative and helpful

Esky waterproof camera and monitor is unbranded foldable monitor bought on amazon
this camera cost 20 £ and monitor same before i had cheaper camera 7 £ but same imagine i was thinking camera is defect
FlAvIuS861 can you please provide me the links for both
yes but i want to mention ive tried alot of combination battery ciggarete lighter then i remove the relay and put a capacitor u show on video but no luck i call today a shop who can fix this for me but they say will do it for 100 £ :(
Will this method stop the screen going blank when i brake?
I don't understand how that is possible you should have your signal wire tied into your reverse wire not brake wire
It is on the signal wire. Yet every time i brake when camera is active screen goes blank for a second or two. Comes back then brake again and goes blank again. No wires going anywhere near the brake wiring
There is a fuzzy picture after it comes back on also
@@holdenguy75 ahh ok it's a pulse signal coming off the reverse signal. Yes this method will work

Thai Vuong haha but her looks soft like a pillow 😍
Raymond Urias, like sleeping on cloud 9?
Relay is an electro-magnetic switch.
"Hello. everything is connected properly, but I do not have a video signal. what could be the reason"
Check everything again.
Why isn’t it working for me? Followed all your tips. Mine is a Toyota Land Cruiser. The reverse imagine still flickering.
It could be a bad camera that does happen.
I would check the voltage first with a multimeter to make sure that the relay is supplying 12 volts constant once triggered
@@RaymondUrias does the voltage have to be 12v from the relay all the time ? Or would the voltage increase when starting the car ?
@@kotasonamtenzin 12 to 14 is acceptable
@@RaymondUrias so the voltage drop from 12 is the reason why it flickers ?
@@kotasonamtenzin correct. Most modern vehicles can detect when a light bulb is broken. They have a filament detection system where it can feel the voltage drop. So the way that it constantly checks is it sends a low voltage pulse and this pulse is what causes the flickering is that drop. That's why you want to switch everything over to a relay the moment the vehicle is put in reverse. It will have a constant 12 volt without any flickering.
Its real science bitches!!! make shirts, dude your car is looking badass.
Hey Ray...do you know anything about programming bmw key fobs?..Or should I just let the dealership stick it too me?
