I think, the MOST important thing with the difficulties is that you can change them on the fly at any time of your gameplay. You don't lose any progress, so if it's too easy - crank it up a bit. If it's too hard - tune it down. And have fun.

Yeah, that's brilliant. It's often really hard to get an idea of the effects a difficulty option really have until you actually start playing, and it's a pain to keep restarting to adjusting things.
It can also help alleviate a common issue in CRPGs (don't know if it applies to this game as I haven't played it yet, but I notice it often) where the early game is balls hard but the late game is way too easy. Never been fond of the upside down difficulty myself.

I actually HATE when developers do this. Sadly this is the industry standard right now.
Probably sounds stupid to a lot of people, but it totally kills the feel of challenge and achievement for me, if I am able to change it to a lower difficulty at any time.
I want to HAVE to push through, not be given the option to cheat.

@@ChaosDraguss It definitely is, though I also know quite some people who feel the same way.
I have not said that the developer is bad for doing it, i just said that I (personally) hate it.
What was a really good middle ground for me was the way that did it in Dragon Quest 11. You could choose the hard difficulty at the beginning and could switch to a lower difficulty setting at any time, but you could not change it back up to hard. For me, this was perfect.
The fact that they did this also leads me to think that I am definitely not the only one who feels that way.
That the game is just hard, for everyone, without being able to switch down to easy, is also what I loved about Dark Souls the most.
Back in the good old times, no game had on-the-fly difficulty changing.

Especially since people playing on higher difficulties are not on Last Azlanti and will save-scum the entire game with every skill check and every encounter. Thus tossing out any true-to-table top they can. Not all of them will chide you for playing on anything less than Core, but most of the time they're hypocritical when they act haughty for beating the game on core and higher for achievements whether Steam or personal. Really, just play the game on any difficulty.
I really enjoy Daring with slightly weaker enemies to start with and then regular ol' Daring after Act 1. Daring feels the most like a table top experience with a DM (+Deaths Door). Right balance of full damage and player-forgiveness (most DMs don't want to kill the players until encounter design becomes difficult)

My preferred difficulty is a Custom that starts from Core. But turns on Death's Door (to emulate that MOST DMs don't want to kill the party via a random encounter just because you got unlucky at the dice), turns on Respec (Because PFS allows respec, so I have no idea why Owlcat thinks it should be off by Core), and weight on movement (Because honestly, that's a QOL issue. As a DM in PnP, I never made the party track that nonsense unless they were being silly and trying to carry entire fortresses with them. Watching your party take 5mins to cross a map and exit is not my idea of fun :P ).

I started doing, but overtime I’ve started to feel like just turning it storymode. I’m not against difficult encounters or resource conservation, but Owlcat seems to actively design encounters around punishing them for not making min max builds and abusing save reloads. Drezen in particular has got to be one of the worst designed areas I’ve ever seen in a crpg. Encounters should be designed to provide interesting engagements, not endless waves of filler battles that actively designed to use dirty tricks to kill you.

    • @shawngillogly6873
      @shawngillogly6873 3 роки тому +5

@@trevordavis6830 I didn't have any problem in Drezen, and I wouldn't consider my build min/maxed. Now, I did recruit Arue out of the dungeon, and she's an Easy button in herself. Also, the cheat code to Owlcat games is pets to win. The best answer to the AI throwing waves at you is to have a horde of your own. In my case, Cavalier w/horse, Seelah w/ a paladin mount, Sylvan Sorcerer w/ Killodon, Lann crossed to Demonslayer w/ a Raptor Boon Companion. Then add summons. Also, on the long dungeon crawls, bring your best healer. Which is Daerun. Plus the game gives you short rest stations around the map. Using them isn't a cheat.
That said, I'm with Mort. Play the game the way that brings you joy. I don't play on Unfair, because hyper min-maxed builds and save scumming every fight isn't my idea of fun.

Just to let people know, selecting "none" when it comes to enemy difficulty does not mean that they are pen and paper equivalents. Compared to tabletop, enemies have more AC and Attack Bonus.
In my experience, setting enemy difficulty to "Moderately Weaker" means that you can have an experience closer to the tabletop, that is, walking into fights unbuffed is not a huge issue. You still have to pay attention to enemy stats and play tactically sound, but you typically won't fall to small mistakes.
When I play on "None" or above, I often have to prebuff my party, use potions, basically do anything I can to power up. Not every fight on "None" will warrant this level of buffing, but enough that it becomes noticeable.
For example, I fought some Undead Smilodons early in act 2 which, on None, had +22 to hit, and could hit 4 times on a full attack, dealing about 20 damage each hit. This meant that my tank would likely go down or be near dying if any Smilodon got a full attack off on them.

@@SprayandPrayman22 I agree with you, that frustration is definitely there, especially if a player is new to Pathfinder (like me). On the flipside, all that frustration has led to a few memorable moments. For example, there were a few fights where no matter how much I buffed, I was still having a hard time. I thought about lowering the difficulty, but noticed that I hadn't tried using Dimension Door for better party placement. That one spell changed the entire flow of several fights.
Of course, there will be those fights where Dimension Dooring around still isn't an answer, haha.

  • @briane75
    @briane75 2 роки тому +23

It still bugs me to no end that they call Core 'close to the table top'. Yes, the *rules* listed are, but the enemy stats are grossly inflated over the table top versions. If I recall correctly, Nulkineth's AC in the PnP version is 20, so here on normal, two steps below 'Core', they're already seeing significant increases. I'd love to see a difficulty setting that drastically reduced the amount of magic items you get and removes the nearly unlimited access to spell scrolls while lowering stats of enemies in-line with the tabletop version, so that you could have a fun experience that didn't have 'cast every buff spell in the game on your party before combat' as part of it's core gameplay loop.

  • @Nerazmus

The biggest problem I have with the difficulty is that it relies too heavily on AC and not on other survivability mechanics to make enemies more tough.

Difficulty settings are really good in both games. Default Normal,Hard, Easy settings are meh but the best thing is that you can customize it as you like. You can make it as hard as you want or as easy as you want. I tend to go for a middle ground but if some encouter was getting annoying or I was tired(in Kingmaker) with going through the trash mobs I simply tweaked some things so the small fry will drop in moments so I can go and fight the boss on some more enjoyable difficulty for me(because too easy is not fun, you have no time to use anything fun even in turn based because things simply die before it can be used.). IIRC, Paizo's "official" stance is that the rules don't simply exist to facilitate the DM and players co-creating a narrative, so min-maxing is part of the game. Intermediate players are expected to know how to make a reasonably powerful character while minimizing costs or downsides. Hard and Unfair really exist for people who have characters that are so powerful that the core rules game feels boring or trivial.

Its refreshing to see someone who plays the game on Unfair mode not sit there and brag about how "uber powerful" their minmaxed monk-dipped monstrosity is, and actually admit that the only way you can possibly get through the game on that difficulty is to save skum to get lucky on rolls.

i am here because difficulty is a thing of optimizing. You can't play what you wan't above Normal. Even on Core your party must be good. So Normal is what you wanna take even if you know the mechanics for roleplay. Super optimized Partys can even run trough hard or even Unfair. But this is a Roleplaying game - Go Normal or lower if you want to play your group as you want it. This game has a great Story with great Charaters don not loos it because you think you need a different difficulty. I know the game from Kingmaker and did that on hard after doing it on average. This i started on core (The clothest to tabletop) and i realy had bad times. Go the easyer ways (what you have to) if you do not wanna optimize your group. This game is great, super story and all, but go maybe with the easiet setting to have fun. Later you can optimize. you know what happpens get the potions and scrolls - the right companions - don't do it on the first try! Go maximum Normal on the first try. just a low percentige even have finished that great game. Don't do that - it is great!!

You forgot to mention that slightly weaker enemies means, stat bloated enemies 10 lvls above you compared to the actual table top game. So yeah, don't feel bad if you're missing or getting destroyed, the developers want to pander to l337 hardcore gamers. Also the encounters are designed so you will suffer poison, lvl or ability drain on every other encounter. Late game it's instant death effects from enemies who almost never miss. *edit: Found 'em in the comments.

I'm wondering whether it's a bug or intended design to have to fight some story bosses twice on "Increased" number of enemies.
I had to fight twice that swarm that walk, once within the story and another once his end fight dialogue ended, happened once more later on with Delamere stating she dealt with some named cultist and, said cultist spawned after her dialogue (while still seeing their original bodies on the floor of the room) and fighting us anyway.
Besides that enemies tend to spawn on top of each other which is really weird to look at.
I honestly think that core is a nice experience in terms of gameplay since it evens the playing field between player and enemies where you somewhat need to outsmart it a bit instead of just steamrolling them (I can still one-shot some stack of cultists with lvl 9 spells but it feels more rewarding to see them blow up when it's quite unusual to be able to do so).
I just love death door to don't have to deal with bs nat20 scythe wielding foes (already cringing about the idea of deskari and his scythe on top of his swarm) but i think it's bearable (unlike bs swarm even now that they got patched) like stat drain and negative level once you have access to the proper tools and just add more stakes and flavor to your story, meaning that in one run you might murder some encounter and on other be unlucky and take epic nat20 in your face and lose a companion while the boss is two hits away from death. Hence the most enjoyable playthrough is probably to start on normal or daring, respec your companions as you see fit with mods to diversify the gameplay and increase to core and above once you hit level 8 to 10.

Love the game but I hate how on Core enemies can frequently have 60+ AC and 20+all saving throws, 500+HP not to mention 1-2 pages of buffs that cannot be dispelled.
They should make a source book accurate mode and let you up the difficulty from there and Core is not it see above.
They made the game from an extreme power gamer perspective just like king maker and it makes me a little sad even though I can abuse mechanics to win on any difficulty that is not how I want to play.
I feel Core difficulty with moderately weaker enemies gets you close to table top.
For me I use the mod toy box to tweak my characters so its still fun and I am not forced to take 2-3 spell focuses 3 spell penetrations on every magic user simply to play the game as every moderately hard creature has 25-35 spell rez and the 25+ to all saves as per above.

Lower the "stat adjustment"? I know, I know, it disables achievements! You can always return to Playful(or what have you), change difficulty, get the achievement and get on with your life. Imo, everything above "slightly weaker"(haha, good one!) enemies is NOT recommended. Anything between "much weaker" and "slightly weaker" is where you should be for a proper experience. Everything else is Owlcat rationalizing its decisions.

Unlike a lot of other modern crpg games unfair in pathfinder is a lot more rng based due to increasing returns on stacking stats and the critical mechanic. I go for the hardest difficulty for my first play-through on almost all games, solo if possible, but in pathfinder its more annoying than hard. Most games beating the hardest difficulty involves knowing mechanics and then meta knowledge. In Pathfinder you add spam reloads on top. Unfair becomes hard+ twice the time for reloads, hope you have a ssd.

The information I'm trying to get but can't find anywhere on the internet is the NUMBERS of the difficulty settings. WOTR doesn't even have a decent wiki it seems (fextralife is worthless BS, mostly pages with "insert in-game tooltip here")
I just started a game on Hard and the combat log tooltip told me "difficulty: +1". +1?? On Hard? That used to be a +4 in Kingmaker, not including the indirect bonuses from the boosted stats.
Are the difficulty numbers all different in WOTR or is this because I'm only in the prologue?

    • @MortismalGaming
      @MortismalGaming  2 роки тому

There aren't flat numbers to give really, it varies, especially since you fight mostly the same types of demons as you go. It kind of scales around what is POSSIBLE to achieve in terms of attack rolls, AC, etc at any given point in the game.

in kingmaker this flat bonus is, relatively speaking, massive at the start but becomes nearly unnoticeable later on. Is this still the same or does it scale throughout the game?
and if it scales, is it like in Divinity Original Sin 2, where the % keeps getting bigger the further in the game you are, or does it scale with something else (like creature type)?

Yes lv30 Ghost, i know your melee's drain 2 levels per attack, but my tank obviously got Death Ward on when fighting Undead. So maybe you should cast one of those lv9 spells you got lying around. At least cast polymorph on yourself before you decide to go into melee!

That's fair. On one hand it's a shortcut against a mechanic. But on the other hand an actual tabletop DM likely isn't going to throw two dozen enemies at you on the same day, all of which use ability drain. Usually the rule is 'a half dozen encounters, where encounters include non-combat segments like dealing with traps or puzzles or meeting people on the road, etc".

A big takeaway for me in this video is the enormous difficulty jump from story to casual, and then from hard to unfair. I feel like story and unfair difficulties deprive the player of agency and render most of their decisions meaningless.
In story mode nothing you do matters because enemies are too weak to pose a threat to even the most unoptimized parties.
Likewise, on unfair difficulty, your decision making is constrained by the need to perfectly optimize your party to avoid getting immediately annihilated. And a perfectly optimized party is still going to need a lot of help from the dice to win a lot of the fights on unfair.
I started the game on core difficulty which feels pretty good but I'll probably bump it up to hard once I get my feet under me. Unfair looks like a nightmare and doesn't seem fun at all.

I think it’s less about winning and more just getting exhausted from so many fights. If you’re mainly here for the story and role-play, having to do so many filler encounters gets really boring if not frustrating, especially on turn based mode or in areas like Drezen that are seemingly designed to annoy the player and use dirty tactics to kill them.
I’ve been playing on core for 98% of my play through and I eventually turned it down to storymode temporarily halfway through Areelu’s Lab in Act 3 because I just got sick and tired of having to fight the same 3 to 4 difficult filler mobs over and over again.
