  • You can not have good quality sleep if you're breathing through an open mouth. If you want to improve your sleep, you need to make a conscious effort of breathing through your nose during sleep.
In this video, I will show you tape that we often recommend and just to wear across the lips it's very comfortable. If your nose is congested, do the nose unblocking techniques from the Oxygen Advantage, put them into practice, because the more you breathe through your nose during the day, the more you will be able to breathe through your nose during sleep.
Watch this video to see how can you improve your sleep by just making small subtle changes to it.

Patrick absolutely changed my life in every single way, energy, health, intelligence etc. I really wouldn't be the man I am today without his knowledge. I can't be any more grateful for finding his message, I haven't been ill once in 2 years of nose breathing and mouth taping. Prior to doing so I had excercise induced asthma, headaches, coughs , brain fog and the list goes on

Since I have begun breathing exclusively through my nose, I have felt calmer, more grounded, less anxious. My asthma has improved dramatically, as well as the quality of my sleep, and even my trombone playing, which suffered so much when I got very sick 19 months ago, has finally started to return to a world class level.

I had a childhood similar to yours.
In the 80s snoring and poor sleep was referred to as swallowing the tongue.
At 68 years old, I have been following your instructions, tape on my mouth at night and at work with virus mask on. It's teaching me to nose breath after all these years.
Last night, sleeping on my back for the 1st time in a long while, I swallowed my tongue with taped mouth. Snoring with the tape on.
Strange I thought, but I love your instruction.

Before I discovered Patrick's work I was watching alot of "polyvagal theory" vids...which worked really well as a preparation for "mouth taping " and deep breathing exercises...because the first thing I do at night is to examine what "physiological state" I'm in...you want to be in "ventral vagal"...peaceful state...with slow rhythmic breaths...with a focus on the out breath... just by watching the breath I've noticed its easy to start the internal work of breathing into my diaphragm,belly...slowly and deeply with an equal exhale...being mindful to stay in a relaxed state..ie ventral vagal...and then when I'm there...I put the mouth tape on...ready for a good night of sleep...but if I'm too tired and I just "crash"...I often notice I m actually "mouth breathing" through the tape!!!

I have trouble focusing in general. Since incorporating nasal breathing and really in tuned with slow inhalation-exhalation, I’m able to have longer attention span especially during daily activities, watching long tutorials/videos, reading. It came along with anxiety at first, but after long practice, ur parasympathetic mode starts to regulate more in moments of rest and during light activities. I’m easily in control during stress moments.

I have been mouth taping for about 2 months now. also doing buteyko and oxadv nasal exercises during the day. that said, i still wake up in the middle of the night after about 4-5 hours of sleep and can't get back to sleep. generally my mouth is not dry in morning and my nose is generally clear but still can't make it through a night without waking up and i'm still struggling with daytime tired. other measures i'm trying: sleeping on side, no caffeine after 10am, slightly tipped bed(~4"/10cm head side up), also intermittent fasting (no food after 3pm). bedtime about 10pm. overall i'm very happy with nose breathing, but still chasing additional measures for quality sleep...

Though my nose is blocked sometimes, i wonder - is it dangerous to tape the mouth closed, in case my brain stops sending adequate breathing signals, and my nose may have become blocked while asleep, or is it ok to just tape mouth closed and try?

As a dedicated follow to the OA and someone that regularly tapes their mouth- has anyone else experienced waking mid sleep, feeling anxious and unable to breath properly? I suffer from hay fever at certain times of the year and am constantly blowing my nose, sneezing throughout the day and generally feeling bunged up. It can take me awhile to settle at night, as my nose clears (albeit only on one side) but I eventually I have a good nights sleep. Except on these rare occasions when I wake and struggle to get enough oxygen in through my nose. At these times, it’s really difficult not to remove the tape on my mouth. Instead I usually sit up and read a book until my breathing relaxes and I’m able to fall asleep again. Is this side effect common with people who suffer from restricted nose passages due to hay fever?

  • @PursuitOfScratch

I started sleeping with tape on my lips three nights ago, the first night I had incredible sleep, but the 2nd and 3rd nights have not been great at all. Is there an adjustment period, and if so, how long do you estimate?
The last two nights of bad sleep has raised a concern:
    1. If a person is using tape on their lips during sleep to promote nasal breathing, but the tape does not prevent 100% air into the mouth, will a person not continue to try breath through the mouth, thus getting less air than normal and therefor causing sleep apnea?
    2. Is it not better to use tape that blocks 100% of air, thereby forcing the person to breath completely through their nose, or will a person automatically switch to nasal breathing if there is slight obstruction with the lips?
    Thank you!

I think mouth breathers are more likely to inhale a larger volume of air. Mouth breathing doesn't offer the first line of defence to the airborne virus. Nose breathing is much better as the first line of defense. Patrick

So why do some of us mouth breathe at night? Is it because we mouth breathe during the day and it's a habit we take into our sleep or do some people only mouth breathe when they're sleeping but nose breathe during the day?

Hi Colette. I don't think it would be a good idea to tape around mouth at 88 years. But you could practise gentle light breathing for 10 minutes before sleep. You will find this exercise on UA-cam. All the best Patrick

I have a tendecny to yawn quite a bit and that forces my mouth to be open. The tape wouldn't stick to my mouth if this occurs. What to do in that case?

I just force my jaw to stay closed, its hard but you can do it for yawning and send the air through your nose

I've just started to breath through my nose in the day. How long does it take before it feels comfortable? At the moment I still have an urge to get more air in through my mouth even though I can breath 6-8 breaths a minute through my nose without any physical issues??? Any advise welcome.

I am 72 years old and I have severe Acid Reflux and take a prescribed medication. I sleep partially sitting up in my recliner. I awake with dry mouth almost every morning. Can I still use the tape? or do I have to sleep lying down to use it?

Hi Regina. If you have dry mouth upon waking that’s a sigh that you don't breathe through the nose during sleep. Wearing the tape every night you will significantly improve your energy levels upon waking. Continue with taping your mouth, it will help. However, wear MyoTape only as it does not cover the mouth. it simply brings the lips together with light elastic tension.

Hi Colleen It is normal to remove tape during the first few days. Slow down breathing and create air hunger for 15 minutes before sleep. Continue taping for a week or so. Then less likely to remove it during sleep. Patrick

I’ve been trying taping at night, but I don’t make it through the night. I can’t get into deep sleep and I have horrible dreams, waking up quit frequently. I finally take off the tape and fall asleep for the rest of the night. Is this normal? 🤷‍♂️

It means you have a very low control pause, you should address that first. But imo try to continue mouth taping even if it's frustrating it will help you in the long run.

@@hoshang747 Hi. nose breathe only during the day. Practise gently slowing breathing for 15 minutes pre sleep. If you do not like the feeling of wearing the tape at night or are apprehensive about wearing the tape then try with MyoTape - it surrounds the lips, instead of covering them. Also, you should wear the tape for 20 minutes during the day, so you get used to the feeling of wearing the tape.
