Wife: What are you watching? Me: High-resolution train footage from Norway. Wife: Why? Me: You got me. Wife: Wife: This is oddly soothing. Me: IKNOWRIGHT
I've watched this one several times now. I'll never get tired of it. Such a peaceful journey through stupendous scenery with a lovely blanket of snow. A truly beautiful country. From this side of the camera, I can't imagine why it's harrowing but maybe the conditions are rather testing for you. Thank you HCG, your channel is my favourite and I always look forward to your next post. Keep them coming!
I have to say I’m full of admiration for you & your fellow drivers & train crews but especially for the tunnellers, the engineers & the electricians etc who made those tunnels, laid the tracks and erected the electric power lines those mountain sides are frighteningly narrow in places and may I be the first or one of them to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year
The original is the first of your videos that I watched. I was amazed (after we got up the mountains a bit. Initially I was disappointed with the weather), and then astonished to find that the videographer is the driver. Wonderful video, even better now!
I love HCG's value-added "video notes" such as the one on lighting at the 59 minute mark in this video. It gives me added appreciation and understanding of what it takes to do a demanding job regardless of the season and the weather. Bravo!
I have never seen videos as mesmerizing and relaxing as these! I can't get over how fast you go, yet you can't see the tracks! The effect of going through the tunnels sometimes reminds me of the Stargate sequence from 2001. This, too is an Ultimate Trip!!!
Fun fact: Finse is the the location for the Battle of Hoth scenes in Star Wars: The empire strikes back. They had conditions like this to cope with during filming. Harrison Ford who played Han Solo in the movie was on a train who was stopped at Geilo because of the weather. So the filmcrew had to come and pick him up with a rotary snowplow, like the one we see when arriving at Finse station.
In conditions like this I'd love to see a couple of rear facing cameras showing the amount of snow these Herculean monsters actually move! Fantastic footage!
Thank you HCG for doing this! This was my favorite of all the winter rides. So much snow you can't see the rails and it looks surreal. Of course you don't have to think "if" the rails are there. They just are. Otherwise this job might not be for you, right?
This has been my all time favorite ride this far too. I just hope to see some more crazy action on the mountain :D The weather just has to hit my schedule right :p So true, if you're afraid that rail might be gone, then this is really not the job for you.
HinduCowGirl, This is so wild. Hallingskeid. The only thing I could equate this rail line to is from the film Snowpiercer. You beat that film! Woah! Subbed.
An amazing experience. How you managed to drive this train through the treacherous storm, I don't know. But you did one heck of a job in taking it through without any major delays. Keep it up.☺☺☺
It’s been many many years since my daily commute to college at Cambridge. I only wish it had been as scenic and smooth as your trips are. I’m not jealous (who am I kidding, I’m very jealous) 🚂🚅🚃🚃🚃
Hi HCG, another video I enjoyed, what I don't get is what do those people who live in those houses at Hallingskeid and Finse do for a living let alone survive under those extreme conditions. Always enjoy learning more about Norway since I have become a big fan of your famous singer Sissel Kyrkjebo who I listen to often. Thanks again for all the work you do to put this video online. PC
No one lives in Hallingskeid. The buildings you see are cabins. People go there during weekends and holidays. In Finse only a small amount of people live, they work in the Finse 1222 hotel and the Tourist Cabin and at the station.
Just followed! You KEEP that first-class Planeticket to New York, I'm taking the Choo-Choo-Train to Norway for some Peace and Quiet:) Go ahead Santa, burrie me for 3 months in the snow staying at some nice Norwegen Family ha ha. [must be really expensive, can't even figure out from Maastricht to let's say Kautokeino / the farrest north a train gets/ or any other nice pittoreske hidden little village on ' Planet Hoth'. ] p.s. Tom Hanks, where is my Hot Chocolate???!
Haha, thanks a lot! The train only goes to Bodø, and then you have to get a bus or a car to go further north. And there is another train between Narvik and Kiruna in Sweden, called the Arctic Train. On the train to Bodø you can buy hot chocolate on board ;)
Here in the UK the whole rail network grinds to a halt if we get an inch {2.5cm} of snow ,the excuse they use every time is, its the wrong type of snow
How fast are you going? It looks really fast. I love your videos, they are the best. Would love some biographical information about you, how you came to be a train driver, even a photo?
Once again HCG, you make us all glow with the pleasure and comfort of your journey. I just recline my seat with a mug of coffee and relax into another wonderful ride through a spectacular landscape. You are so lucky to have the job satisfaction that many are envious of. Watching your journeys is the most relaxing thing I think I have ever found. It beats whale song and other sea sounds. I could just drift off. Thank you so much from Dudley in the UK. A quick ps, so what is the longest tunnel you go through on your journey's?
Thanks HCG, nice improvements on this one. Also with the additional texts, especially at 1:00:05 . I'll have to admit I never understood the reason for "no lights" in the original video. (Please don't tell anyone. 😂)
I also appreciate the info-graphics. The kind engineer, that cleaned off the lights, must be one of those guys that swims in frozen lakes! Doing his job to the fullest extent, and probably doing extra, just because he can.
Look and learn British railway companies.THIS IS HOW TO RUN A RAILWAY IN WINTER!!! we may have invented the railway but in many respects lost our way.Well done Norway for showing. Us how its done

@@RailCowGirl I LOVE a good blizzard!!! Nothing better then walking with my dog at night when it's over with a big moon out!!! Heck I walk in it when it's howling[ the wind not the dog].
@@glennsgirl7183 I was in a white out once. Couldn't see 3 ft in any direction. Had to wait it out, a few hours later, was able to walk a couple miles down the road to safty. Wouldn't do that again, if I had the choice.
And trying to figure out what kind of brackets will be on the next pole. Seems there are several types of insulators, from porcelain to disc styles to the present polymer standoffs, and just about as many different styles of catenary poles and ceiling brackets.

For a few years now I've watched these magnificent Scandinavian snow covered mountain train show's and I am yet to see smoke coming out of 1 single chimney. Cool footage--very soothing. I was in Narvik years ago; not sure where this is in relation to that. I wonder what the folks in these little towns do. Is there local industry? Do they farm and/or hunt? Do they have to make their own clothing and shape cookware from stone? Where is the nearest dentist? Have they heard that the Beatles broke up?

I am curious what the visual effect would be with a camera on the back of the train with all the snow being whipped up in these conditions.
It would just be a white wall of snow flying in the vortex, much like a blizzard :)
