    I’ve watched this video three times in preparation for my own 86 grot mass painting challenge. While I’m not doing yellow as the primary color (going with typical black), I found your methods to be inspirational in formulating my own plan. It’s definitely made it easier and more rewarding to finish whole steps on a large quantity of minis. So thanks Brent!! Looking forward to the next mini roulette!

    So, somewhere in my storage unit I have a box full of first edition, WH lizard men! They have been in that box since the early 90's! The box is 36" by 22" by 22" and is literally packed with multiple copies every piece of the lizard men produced by WH 40k back then! I'm thinking maybe over 200 pieces all together! I'm going to put together a plan to paint that massive collection and maybe put them in a diorama against a phalanx of Brettonian Knights that I have been saving from the same time period! I am in the process of my first batch of night goblin stabbas and I've fallen in love with these little guys. I've never played any version of Warhammer but have always been a collector of various different goblins for use in D&D , these guys have probably took the Pathfinder Goblins position of my favorites now.
    I doubt I ever go to these lengths with my painting, hell I use cheap craft paint from hobby lobby and make my own washes but the important part is I'm not embarrassed by my paint jobs and I have a wonderful time doing it! I never realized how relaxing and therapeutic it can be to sit down for a couple hours a day and just paint. As a plus my little nephew and niece have discovered a love of dragons recently so I painted them both a dragon , I can't wait for them to get them in the mail!

    What's very helpful, as I get from the video, is your method. I used to do 3-4 minis at the same time, finish them, and then start another 4. I took time to finish 20-40 minis, and I got tired since you have to repeat tasks, and start over, repeat.. Then I changed my approach: I prepare them and I start making the same step for ALL of them. This is incredibly better, once you finish a process you don't have to repeat it and it's very motivationg, like you finished a quest. And go to the next one. I started 20 GW orcs (for KOW army) 4 days ago, and I am close to finish them. Once I'd have take much more time to have them ready. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Great video, I can't fault anything you did or said. The scheme looks great (love the purple), the care you took shows and the result is way more than tabletop ready.
    -
    On the topic of yellow and airbrushes, I have my own story: I'm painting my marines in an orange and dark grey scheme.
    1. Prime light grey and basecoat with a carbon/dark grey color (airbrush).
    2. Paint chest, knees, feet, head, elbows, hands, shoulder rims, part of the power pack in a mix of gold yellow and orange fire (vallejo). Takes anywhere from 5 to 10 thin layers of orange.
    3. Paint additional details like boltgun for guns, bright gold for emblems/aquila, blue for ropes/capse/cables and much more (well over 10 different colors, several hand mixed)
    4. Glue the subassemblies (chest/legs + plus arms/guns + shoulders + head + power pack + pinning on base)
    5. Wash orange and gold with seraphim sepia, some nuln oil on details, some aggrax earthshade for dirt effects.
    6. Cry because I've done just over 40 models, but still have 15 marines, well over 40 primaris and 5 vehicles (2 rhinos, repulsor, land raider, imperial knight and a baneblade)
    Once I've finished this army, I will never paint yellow/orange on a dark base again. I don't know what I was thinking.
    My problem is that I don't own and currently can't afford the airbrush, so a friend of mine does it when he occasionally has time. If I were to do this again, I'd simply airbrush the entire model orange and then hand paint the grey. It's a lot harder to fix mistakes this way, but it can be mitigated by doing thin layers (four instead of the 5-10 orange ones).
    I will say this though; My effort shows and there won't be anyone else stupid enough to match my army colors.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 років тому +1

      Step 2 painting orange over gray sounds brutal! I've made that mistake before. Have you tried using an intermediate color on top of the gray? There are some yellowish colors that actually have good coverage. Averland sunset, desert yellow, ochre yellow, those might go on well in 1-2 coats and then ~2 coats of orange on top of that might do the trick.
      But yeah, in the future make sure to prime in a color that jives with orange (white or tan) or borrow your friend's arbrush :-)
      Do you have any pictures of your marines posted somewhere? I'd love to see them!

    I like the time breakdown. Congratulations on finishing so many models, and at a great tabletop quality level!
    I haven't yet done the pre-plan. I guess I sort of do, I tackle a small part of a unit, usually 10 models and record the paint and steps I make on an index card as I do it. Then the next time I paint that unit type again, I refer to the index card and tackle 30 or so models at once. I am going to try the pre-plan approach with my Plaguebearers.
    I've found the Vallejo Game Color Extra Opaque paint line helps a ton with base coating, especially when batch painting.

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 років тому +2

      Oooh, I'll have to look into that Vallejo extra opaque line. Getting a color done on a single pass would have massively helped on the purple and browns. I've considered grabbing GWs base coats for that reason, but I just hate the GW bottles so much. Vallejo though.... yes...
      Nice habit writing down your recipes. I wish I had gotten into that a long time ago!

    • @charlesfe
      @charlesfe 5 років тому +1

      GW used to have a line called Foundation Paints which were single coat bases. The GW base coats are okay, but the Vallejo extra opaque is more like GW's old Foundation line. There's also a line Creature Caster carries that appears to function like extra opaque due to pigment density - going to be ordering that soon. (The Vallejo extra opaques are mostly muted/dark shades - this improves their effectiveness. The Creature Caster carried line appears to contain many bright colors.)

    Not gonna lie, first thinking 'ok, this should be interesting' and then 'I started by airbrushing' for me is kind of sigh, since most people don't have that.
    On the painting itself, its very cool to see it on camera mass painting all this and just hard not to be inspired by the organisation especially, great having like what was it 6 or 8 painting handles and how you lined them all up and well should be obvious I guess thinking back on it with organizing the colour scheme before hand so you should usually know where you are at and excellent job of what you said at the end, having a list of paintlist/order and crossing it out is an ingenious idea since like mentioned, i'm guessing it's quite satisfying to cross out.
