One of their most lyrically potent pieces. When Geddy Lee sings, he has to be more than a vocalist. He has to be something of an actor; conveying Neil Peart's intent. He sings this song with great urgency. The second verse is particularly intense, with the lyrics getting deeply into the unpleasantness of man's uncivilized nature, accompanied by the heaviness of the ascending string section. Incredible work.
My Rush "Holy Trinity" is Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. I know they're not their most popular albums, but I can't help but love that they're so melodic.
Grace and Power I'd agree. Using the synths they elevated the prog element up to 11, despite what the naysayers might say, and my God these lyrics. But Hold Your Fire, not so much. It certainly has its moments and overall it's an enjoyable listen, yes even Tai Shan, but it feels very cookie cutter. Like they found their 80s formula and stuck with it for one more album without knowing particularly where to go with it. Glad they picked things back up with the immaculate Presto
I'm surprised that I haven't found another Rush fan who says Hold Your Fire is their favorite album. I really love the tracks on it, Mission, Prime Mover, Second Nature, and High Water being my favorites. Their other albums sure have some sick jams on them that I could listen to anytime, but there's something about Hold Your Fire that I really enjoy. Not claiming it's better than their other albums, just personal preference.
+Spunio I thought I was alone in this! Hold Your Fire is definitely my favorite Rush album to listen to, closely followed by Grace Under Pressure. I feel like some of their best songwriting was on their 80's albums.
+Spunio I don't know what neil was going through in this point of his life when he wrote Hold your fire but it seems these songs have just as much meanning today as they did in 1987. maybe even more now... Listening to the lyrics of this album along with power windows, grace under pressure, show of hands, etc... but this one in particular was and still is like going to a brilliant psychiatrist and even getting a perscription of incredible songs that still raise the hairs on my arms to this day.
Rush is primarily a hard rock band, so obviously, the synth era was hard for a lot of fans to accept and embrace. I welcomed it with open arms. It's an album that you have to grow into. I didn't like it all that much into a listened through it a few times. Still can't quite get through Thai Shan. Just not a strong song at all. The rest of the album, quite good.
a lot of people don't realize that Geddy's heavy use of synthesizers is one of the things that enabled Rush to thrive in the 80's. Rush was always good at keeping up with the times, that's why they went back to the hard rock style when Grunge & Alternative took over in the 90's. RIP NEIL WE WILL MISS YOU FOREVER & EVER 💙
I've been listening to Roll the Bones and Counterparts recently, and it just really struck me for the first time how much of the early 90s jangly and funk-infused guitar stylings are all over those albums.
I like to think they always found inspiration in the music of the day, but this comment makes it sound like they were just trying to mimic whatever was cool to stay relevant. The truth is surely a bit of both, but with Rush I really do believe it leans a little more toward the former.
You can always count on society, even the majority of Rush fans, to know what the best of the best is. Rush peaked with HYF. It's the most polished, inspired, and timeless album they ever put out.
It's even funny to hear people talking about their favorite songs from Rush; not one comes from this album. In my opinion, on the other hand, it's pretty much THE BEST album, with THE BEST songs.
As a long time Rush fan i have to say the 80s period is my favorite and this song along with Middletown dreams is one of the best. Amazing lyrics, composition and musicianship. Each song is like a mini novella.Just breath taking.
Bravo man I couldn't agree more, lifetime rush fan and Middletown dreams is an INCREDIBLE song.. love Alex Lifesons homage to the "gargoyle song" from Disney's fantasia. (Can't remember the name of the song)

With all the peoples positive comments on here I am excited to find out more about this album. I am brand new RUSH fan and completely obsessed. When I found out they have 19 albums I was blown away and started with the first and dedicated myself to listening and learning every album . I personally never got past Fly by Night. I have listened to all of them but nothing ever came close to the first one. First Neil one I mean. Nothing compares. Opening with Anthem and ending with In The End. It's It's genius and beautiful. Rivendell In the End is my all time favorite back to back songs on any album . But really excited to learn more about the later 80s albums and studying the lyrics. Mission has always been a big fav of mine from the first time I heard it . Mission made me tingle and immediately went to my Molly Playlist. Cheers mates
I love this song and turn the page
Rush albums that were heavy on keyboards had some of Alexs best solos
Totally agree
this was posted on a RUSH FB page and I confess this is my very first time seeing this video. I was obsessing over Hold Your Fire most of the day. This is like falling in love with the band ALL OVER AGAIN! Rush does SO MANY THINGS well it’s just amazing. And seeing Neil of course the tears are flowing again. I cannot keep my mourning under lock and key. It just flows whenever it wills
Why the good ones leave so fast???
Another Rush masterpiece.
Rush is one in it's rock. Way of playing.Thier music cannot be copied or played the way RUSH delivers their. We all enjoyed the #1 master ondrum,s we love and enjoyed a one of a mind's rocken roll. Spechtical. I James Ferguson SR"call this m y favorate of all time!
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
The amazing Wal bass ........
Hold your fire - was a good album.
This is probably something in the order of insane but if I had to pick one song by Rush to be my all time favorite, this would be the one.
It probably was the inspiration for the Rush Presto album and others that followed
@@omartinoco9930 How so? Presto scaled back the use of keys dramatically as Hold Your Fire went a little "too far" in that direction.
A highly filtered, high energy, all-digital studio sound at the height of CD recording, and both albums carry a sensitive cargo of social themes. Made for loud listening on loud speakers.
nothing “insane” about enjoying these boys 👍👍
@@carlgibbons5777 From Grace under pressure to Presto it all sounded the same. Things have changed from Counterparts to this days....
80s rush was the best rush
said no one ever
Honestly. Even Rush's lackluster albums are amazing! This song would've been perfect for the clockwork angels string ensemble
yeah their lackluster albums are better than most bands will ever produce
I put Hold Your Fire in the car CD player, crank the bass to 5, and instantly it is complete work of art.
these dudes are cool
Greatest drummer Neil Peart, greatest guitar player Alex Lifeson, greatest Bassist and vocals Getty Lee of all time
The closing drums are awesome! Just like the rest of the song, and everything they've ever put out!
