@@docrevster Yes, it's unique to say the least and really beautiful, with interesting textures and nuances explored only this once during the whole Rush discography. People only mention this song as a bad one for the 'meme', since the band themselves always mention it as one of the worse, and most people are just too afraid to disagree. Well, not me. By the way, there are many other songs not as memorable or interesting or unique on their catalogue, much "worse" than Tai Shan, by all means. The following track from the exact same album is just an example. But you don't see anybody mentioning those, of course, because there's no 'meme' to it. People simply don't remember. But I do.
We had a debate in college...about old and new Rush. We concluded it was Moving Pictures. Then Signals. We had nothing wrong with it at all....just a change of style.
Man, what a great song from one of the best albums of the 80s. Rush, that rare band ( think, also, Yes, Moody Blues and Genesis) which successfully crossed the bridge from its organic, fantastical prog 1970s excellence to a lyrically meaningful, technically savvy and boldly experimental band which never lost its relevance or willingness to remain a cutting edge tour de force up to Neil’s unfortunate passing. For my money Rush stands with the greatest bands of the rock era. I trust history will agree.
Geddy Lee as best bassist if all time...he was the first time I ever really picked the bass out of songs...his bass is in the forefront and its so fluid.
1984's Grace under Pressure is simply one of the most underrated albums of the 80s. Quite simply superbly superlative in its simplicity, and yet melodic effectiveness. Just marvellously awesome indeed.
I'm probably in the minority, but I think Rush's best work was from the eighties. I love all their stuff from 1974 to 2012, but Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire are my top six Rush albums, not necessarily in that order. I mean, listen to Geddy's bass on this track. EPIC!
+S Kir You are soooooooo right, with the exception that "Xanadu" is from their 1970s material, and I still marvel at how they came up with such a damn cool song.
As a prog rock band, rush changed a lot through the years. While some people like it all, a lot of people prefer one or another of the different rush 'time periods'. Thus i can't blame you for liking their 80s music.
A lot of it has to do with what age you were when you first listened to Rush. My first exposure to Rush was Signals, meaning I hadn't heard any Rush beforehand that didn't have a lot of keyboards in it. I was 14 years old. I went back in time from there, and enjoyed some albums more than others, but when GUP came out, I was a solid Fan, even though I could tell they were still experimenting. I loved that Geddy had changed basses again, Alex layered on the effects, and Neil had added electronic drums to his set, it was the 80's after all. I think that's one of the things I loved best about Rush, they never wanted to remake a record. They kept changing instruments, changing sounds, types of songs and even themes. They just wanted to keep moving forward, some things being really good, some less so, but always different. I'm glad I saw them live many times in their prime too. If they never play live again, or make another album, I'll miss them, but I'll be OK with their body of work. I pity today's 14 year olds, even with all the added avenues for music, like UA-cam and such, they have nothing that comes even slightly close to this. If you have, or know, a kid - play Rush for them, and see how they are amazed.

I know this song is most likely about a drug addict, but this song hits me in a really personal way from a different angle. I struggle with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), I find it difficult to socialize with others and when I try to talk to others a lot of the time, I feel like I'm talking in another language or something. I struggle with thinking if I am meant for this world or not. It puts me in a serious psychological battle with myself. The only other Rush song that makes me feel anything remotely similar when listening to a song is Cygnus X-1. Thank you guys for such an amazing and touching piece of art.
This song is about internal fears. Neil wrote a trilogy of songs across 3 albums called the fear trilogy. He wrote or released them in reverse, this is part 1. The Weapon from Signals is part 2, Witch Hunt from Moving Pictures is Part 3. Each one deals with a different fear.

welcome to the deepest rabbit hole in all of rock music, Rush went through so many different stages, changing up their sound dramatically over a 40+ year career. Rush is third for the most consecutive gold record, only behind The Beatles and Rolling Stones. Early Rush albums have the Led Zeppelin sound that was so popular in the 1970s. It would take them several album to finally make music that was unique to Rush. No one sounds like Rush and there really isn’t any genre you can stick them in - Rush is just Rush. Their own genre. They were probably the pinnacle of Progressive Rock.

If you are lucky, unlike me, you probably won’t know that this whole song is about, whether intentionally written as so or not, it’s the most perfect way to describe anxiety and also sends a strong message of trying to both cope with distract from your triggers, and try to overcome them. Neil admittedly was a shy man who most likely had a social anxiety disorder and notoriously disliked attention from press and even fans. I’ve heard this song thousands of times since I was a small child, but by the time I got to high school and my mental health issues began, this was a song that I constantly came back to so I could feel not only understood, but inspired to be a better person. I thank Rush, particularly Neil through his lyrics, for helping me rationalize my feelings and realizing that I’m not alone in my mental health journey.

Masterwork again,and again and 4ever.
This is the kind of video that brings tears to my eyes, knowing it could be the end.
ESSA MÚSICA EU DEFINO COMO SKA COM UM BREVE TOQUE DE PROGRESSIVO E HARD ROCK. FANTÁSTICA, EMOCIONANTE E DIVERTIDA. ASSIM É O RUSH....
To me, The greatest band in rock & roll history!! Genius times ( 3! )
After all these years, just
plain one killer of a tune!!!
I love this Rush album from their finest period the year I left school.
This video left a great impression on me as a kid! Amazing song. I was raised as a Rushian by my Rushian father! Rush is one of the greatest bands to grace the Earth! Lucky to be born in 78 & be raised on their music! Rush been with me my whole life!
❤🤟🏼✨🎹🥁🎸✨🖖🏼❤
80’s Rush will always be my favourite. Their 70’s stuff is absolutely incredible but to me their synth era 80’s music speaks to me.
If ever there was a "fun" song by RUSH, it's this one 😄
One of my favorite Rush albums. R.I.P Neil, your one of the reasons I wanted to pick up a drumstick and play the drums
This song is so fucking good.
3:49 best part of song
When it opens to blue sky once again? Yup. This song never fails to make me cry.
Too good, just too damn good
Fear and pain are our friends ❤️🙏
Was in boot camp in Great Lakes when they played Alpine Valley, saw it in the paper there and almost cried.
Brilliant song and album, one of their best
that last minute is pure fire
love that you can hear the bass that much, as well
Man! I love this RUSH Era!
It was the first music video (made specifically for TV airplay) to air on MuchMusic here in Canada when the TV station launched on August 31, 1984. (I didn't see any MTV content until decades later when MuchMusic got the rights to air a few MTV awards shows.)
This is how I'm feeling as of late. Glad I'm not the only one to find such inspiration in this song
