I agree. This era was the first I heard and lived before diving into the way back machine of AFTK / Hemispheres and etc. All eras are great and worthwhile. I even love Presto, so underrated.
Bingo. One of the greatest things about Rush is how they did NOT make "Moving Pictures 2.0". I mean, as great as that album was/is, they could have easily just continued by making another similar album, and so on, and it would have been tough to have faulted them if they had. Instead, they pushed onward and gave us Signals, which then led to GUP, which then led to PW, which then led to HYF, and so on... so much greatness, so much originality, so much variety. One of the funniest/dumbest things I've heard non-Rush fans say is, "all Rush songs sound the same". Yeah, umm, LOL, it's not like they're AC/DC, bwaaaaaaahahahahaha!!
Geddy wanted to simplify his keyboards by 1985 on stage. It ended up getting even more out of control by this tour. Eventually he wanted to play what he loved most - the bass. This era gets a lot of hate but I still love all of those songs from this era. Just a totally different sound and feel to any other of Rush. It also takes me back to a long time ago when I was a lot younger.
I read that in an interview . That he wanted to play more bass on power windows. More aggressively. I think he accomplished that. The keys got out of control though. Not him playing the keys, rather all the pre recorded keys you hear. Totally took over some of those songs from power windows. I do think the sound production was far better than previous albums. Peter Collins really made their sound more spacial. Take a listen to the power window remaster with good headphones.
Rush, as good as they were, were always followers and never innovators. They did prog after yes and others were already doing it. They did 80s synth stuff after so many others already were. Went back to hard rock after nirvana, pearl jam and soundgarden were doing it. They went heavy synth just bc it was popular at the time but older 70s rush fans wanted them to stay in the 70s. For me who didnt become a fan until around 85 when i was 10 years old it was easy for me to like each era. But even i can tell they went too far with the synths and alex’s awesome playing really got pushed to the backburner.
@@secretjourney4815 Wasn't power windows the album where they hired a professional keyboard player for certain parts in the studio too? Whatever they did to produce it, I'm glad they did it the way they did it, because I love the album. He really challenged himself having to pull that off live though, for the entire signals through hold your fire era. He pulled it off pretty reasonably well, that's for sure.
2-11-2021 I am stopping bye here in the middle of practicing my drums playing thru some playlists and lo and behold I had to stop and comment... cant everybody see how incredibly difficult this is written. geddy's keyboard "guitar riffs" and alex's guitar "keyboard phrasing" then going back and forth being covered by guitar then the bass and key pedals...onto the ripping lead guitar then back to keys and etc... ...so so difficult to pull off , and to write in such a way shows just how talented and challenging they were to each other to go out on the road and try to perform this hundreds of times. the pedal work they each perform gets so frequently overlooked with rush but here you have bass pedals while playing keyboard and key pedals while playing bass.. alex has the guitar rhythm pedals with keyboard midi then switches to lead with whammy while hitting pedal keys.. .. friggin a maze of intertwined start to finish performance based writing of instrumentation mastery.... my goodness they still don't get the credit they have so richly earned... no reward for resistance... no assistance.. no applause.. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏RIPNEP
They were in such top-notch form here. Hope someone can put some badass AI mojo against that laserdisc and give us some fresh live content to ravenously devour!!
Alex and Geddy singing the bridge and chorus is just so amazing! There’s no other band like them and even in the synthed out 80s, Rush couldn’t be beat.
They were one of the most perfect rock groups having no ego and getting along for 40 years. WOW. I love Rush and always will. I can remember having some problems in my life back in the 80's and listening to them on my couch in earphones. They didn't fix my problems, but they sure did make it better! In my earphones and with my eyes closed I was always trying to figure out who was making what sound. Three people making so much music it was just unreal. RIP Neil.
Matthew Weber I wish. Rush has stayed they are officially done after 40 incredible years of music. Maybe in the future something might change and they might do a really small scale tour but I doubt it.
I have played this song for my graduation party and I’m going to play it again for my graduation party from OLENTANGY Act Program this song is been my youth since 5th grade from heritage elementary school But RUSH killed it on A Show Of Hands
I am the first to post on this video since Neil's passing on 7 Jan. 2020. The drum master has gone to his eternal rest. Hope to see him again, please God release Neil's soul, even if he had it under lock and key.
This is one of the few songs I wish they had busted out on a more recent tour before they hung it up...but considering how they fla out nailed it I'm not surprised they didn't
I loved every period of Rush especially the 80's! A lot of hate gets thrown on Hold your fire (Tai shan not withstanding!) But there were many great songs off that album that hold up to the test of time!❤🇨🇦🎸😎👍
I never realized that live Geddy sampled his own bass for the intro and first verse and choruses, so he could play it with his left hand and the main melody with his right.
wow, the beginning is not very tight maybe thats why it was cut from the live album and vhs, but this is 1988 technology pushed to the limit, some sampled sequences over there, real time piano on other sections, than finishing with midi pedal sampled sequences......and a great song that had to be played live, hold your fire is just a brilliant masterpiece..... oh and rest in peace mr peter collins, the great producer of that magnificient record
theres definitely a few spots where its loose here. i think it was a question of what new HYF material sounded best live. i love this song but can understand why it was cut
Some Rush fans didn't like 'Hold Your Fire', but I DUG IT! One top of this AWESOME song, it had the (unfortunately titled) 'Turn the Page' which KICKS ASS, and 'Force Ten' which is pretty cool in its uniqueness! EVERY RUSH ALBUM has it's JEWELS!!
Q: why even mention the opinion of someone who has a small brain? Mock Rush? Hate the Voice? Are you 12 years old? Deny the whole thing? I am convinced you are slow, and your nonsensical post is just an accident. Now, throw away the key.
I remember there being a part of “The Last Mile” being played before the song starts at a Madison Square Garden show here in NYC and it was great. This album is not my fav but damn this song live is way better than the studio version as does other HYF material it’s better live
why wouldnt you include the content not on the regular release (stuff on laser disk) The intro to this song? - not sure what movie it is but it builds anticipation to the this excellent track.
Little known fact that didnt come to light until after he died from a close friend of his, but hold your fire was also one of neil’s favorite rush albums and one of the few he would actually listen to. Normally neither of the 3 listened to their own music much.
1989's 'A Show of Hands concert...Honestly, I didn't care for the tone of Geddy's WAL...Just sounded thin and twangy...I was glad he eventually returned to his roots and gave us the bestial sound of his '72 J bass....
Ahhh...Subjectivity -- I actually believe the Wal has the best sound in the world; as well as it being the best Rush period ('85-'93)! Isn't life interesting!!!
Alright, first let me say that I'm a HUGE RUSH fan. And I know I'll probably get raked over the coals for this,, but this was one of my least favorite RUSH albums. I really liked Lock and Key but this album was OVER SATURATED with keyboards. Yeah, I know, it was that era. But still, I felt it was over done. So when Presto came along I was so glad to see the keyboards cut in half and Alex and his guitar brought back up front where they belong.
Check out alex randomly kill a solo and hes back into rhythms and singing. What a SAVAGE
Rush never had a period of "bad" music. All their periods has great, excellent music. They just had different flavors, that's all.
I agree. This era was the first I heard and lived before diving into the way back machine of AFTK / Hemispheres and etc. All eras are great and worthwhile. I even love Presto, so underrated.

2010s kinda sucked
@@evanoglesby9504they only had one album in the 2010s lol

I’m a long time stubborn Rush fan and Hold Your Fire is my favorite album followed by Signals. Just adore those two.

I don't wanna face the killer instinct, face it in New Orleans, so we keep it under lock and key.
Lol!!! That's what I always thought Geddy was singing, until I read the lyrics. LMAO!! Lotsa voodoo down there.
Lol
Remember Len Davis...the gangster cop
On "misheard lyrics list" it goes :)
Oh no!I never heard it that way!Funny....after 35 years now this song will never sound the same.
Live version of this song really kicks it up to a high level of complete greatness.
Back in the early 90’s, I had dreams of seeing Rush live. Still do today!
2-11-2021 I am stopping bye here in the middle of practicing my drums playing thru some playlists and lo and behold I had to stop and comment...
cant everybody see how incredibly difficult this is written.
geddy's keyboard "guitar riffs" and alex's guitar "keyboard phrasing"
then going back and forth being covered by guitar then the bass and key pedals...onto the ripping lead guitar then back to keys and etc...
...so so difficult to pull off ,
and to write in such a way shows just how talented and challenging they were to each other
to go out on the road and try to perform this hundreds of times.
the pedal work they each perform gets so frequently overlooked with rush but here you have bass pedals while playing keyboard
and key pedals while playing bass..
alex has the guitar rhythm pedals with keyboard midi
then switches to lead with whammy while hitting pedal keys..
.. friggin a maze of intertwined start to finish performance
based writing of instrumentation mastery....
my goodness they still don't get the credit they have so richly earned...
no reward for resistance...
no assistance.. no applause..
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏RIPNEP
Such an awesome song that I was privileged to hear every night on the HYF tour in 87 as I was blessed to be part of Rush's security detail back then!
such an under rated song. go to the solo. GEEEZE!!!! mind blow!

wow, who can top this..
This was when Neil Peart was Neil Peart.
Loved Neil's bass drum's artwork
I think they should bring that song back on R50 tour in the future of rush

@o o For being sad about Neil Peart dying and never have the opportunity to see him play live again?

Nice deep cut from HYF. Time Stand Still, Force 10, and 8 awesome deep cuts. LOL
Why didn't they include this and more stuff on "Replay"? I want the complete version of that show.
Yeah I wonder the same thing why they didn’t include it

People who mock Rush: Okay, hate the voice. Sure. But you can't deny the whole thing. The talent was/is unmatched for a rock band.

This song (my FAV from Hold Your Fire) was recorded in the same country this live performance was filmed; England.
Alex singing ...
Hold your fire is such a good album
Why didn't this get added when they released Replay x3?
Lazy record company.
