  • Did Joshua really lead the Israelites into the promised land? Did Joshua conquer the land of Canaan? How much evidence for Joshua in the Bible is there? This week in Nothing Fails Like Bible History, we'll explore the evidence for the Bible by looking at evidence backing up the book of Joshua. We'll compare that to the evidence we have for the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II, who also lived during a similar time period, less than 100 miles from the land of Canaan.

In my experience, I was taught to never question, to take things on faith. When I did ask questions, which shouldn't have been difficult to answer, there were no real responses.
Moving away from this kind of thinking was difficult, however, it's one of the single most important actions I've taken.

Try to say you are a cultural Christian rather than say you are an Atheist. In Sweden most folk are Atheists, but many like to get wedded in a church and get a christian burial just for it is a part of our culture, if folk ask us why we do not pray or go to church we just say "I do not believe God will punish me for that", you have no obligation to disprove a God as an atheist nor any obligation to talk about religion, you can just say "I do it my own way", "I found the church to be to stressful and did not give me the peace I wanted".
Just do not try to defend atheism by hitting down on religion, do not be that hateful type that say things like "they believe in fairy tales", just keep in mind that they may feel good within that group and that they have the belief not due to the stories but rather for they feel they belong in the group that have those beliefs, a bit like I never tried to get my old friend out of his skater group that still think skateboarding is cool, I just let him be in that group as long as he feel good about it.

@@W.edgewargames Well, depends. I went to Jesuit highschool and they address many of the issues with the historicity of the bible narrative. My religious studies teacher was a priest who held a Master of Theology degree, and he flat out taught that almost none of the history is verifiable or in any way true. However, he did point out that some of the elements of the narrative are supported by historical evidence, especially the Maccabees (we're Catholics, duh!). I remember when, in a kind of Freudian slip, he pointed out that one of the main reasons the Catholic Church insists on keeping the Maccabees is precisely because most of the non-prophetic parts of the books can be verified historically (although not without bias). He said this in criticism of Martin Luther, but the point stands.

The sun standing still in the sky is the perfect example of something that sounds possible to someone who doesn't understand what the sun is, but is absolutely insane if you do know what the sun is. Aside from the fact that it is something physically impossible, if it did happen there would be accounts of it from all humans civilizations on earth, and those don't exist.

    • @Lilitha11
      @Lilitha11 Рік тому +9

@@Spino111 It definitely isn't possible. The sun always raises and falls from east to west. Over the course of a year the sun's position slowly drifts more to the north before eventually it gets to it's further point north, then starts drifting back down to the south. The solstice is the day that the sun reaches it's furthest point and then goes the other direction.
If you were look at the sun at the same time, two days in a row normally, it would be a little off set, but if you did it at the solstice, it would be in the same spot. This is what they are referring to, that the sun isn't moving, in a north/south direction and takes the same path two days in row.
The sun absolutely, does not stop however. It still raises from the east(or north east as its at it's further point), and sets west(or north west). No one looking at the sun, would describe the sun as not moving, because it is clearly still moving and the sun also wouldn't be up for an entire day.

    • @jamesk9671

That explanation, however, does not account for the buckets that were already filled with water turning red as well. God turning the Nile AND the water in the buckets red functions to communicate a theological message and also demonstrate that iron deposits are not the explanation.

@@joecoolioness6399 We don't know that most of what we have in our history books is true when it comes to the ancient world. Archaeological evidence can be interpreted in various ways, depending upon the theory used. My archaeology professor often challenged us to consider alternative ways to understand the data rather than assume the old interpretations must be correct. To quote that same professor when talking about undergraduate and graduate education: "What I teach my undergraduates is essentially proven wrong by the most recent analyses, but they need something simple and concrete to start with that they think they can rely upon otherwise they'll never even begin to build a framework for more advanced studies. What I teach on the graduate level is that all of the data needs to be reanalyzed according to the advances in theory and technology that we have achieved, making every conclusion a tentative conclusion."
When you say the Bible says things are wrong, you speak like someone who learned the undergraduate perspective where facts, rather than possible truths, are known about the ancient world. There are possible truths that contradict what the Bible says, but they are always tentative and open to revision based on additional evidence and change of theory. The reality of the state of scholarship is not nearly as strong as you imagine.
I don't deny that there are presently some conflicts between the current view (which is probably not the view that will be established in 40 years) and how the biblical data is interpreted. But it is overstating the case to say the Bible must be wrong based on those conflicts, since the very same conclusions you wish to hold up as absolute facts to contradict the Bible will themselves be contradicted by the next series of ways the data will be interpreted.

I would like to show your channel (and others like it) to a couple of Bible-thumping friends of mine. However, that would probably cause me to lose them as friends. They would likely view an episode for just a few seconds, stick their fingers in their ears, close their eyes, and run away screaming, "It's the work of the Devil! Don't listen to it!" Sadly, for many people like them, the fantasy of the Bible is much easier to believe and understand than the reality of science or even the use of simple logic.

    Thank you for making videos.
I'm still Christian. But here's my personality. I'm extremely gullible. Loyal to a fault. But I seek truth more than anything because I want to know what's real.
I grew up a believer. I'm questioning now. It hurts to say that and I feel like I'm in trouble for writing it out. The truth is so much doesn't add up and I refuse to pretend it's not there just for the sake of tradition and what I've always believed before. This lack of evidence is astounding and I've not heard of this before.
What first had me questioning is Noah's Ark. I want to believe because I'm loyal. But lately I've had my heart broken by some I was loyal to. They really really hurt me, and now I know I can't just expect the world to be kind and full of truth. You have to be very critical and on guard or something will sneak up on you. And Noah's ark, like my friend who swore up and down they were truthful, is inconsistent. And when stories are inconsistent, or lacking evidence that most other stories have, it can't really be believed. Which hurts.
I like to think magic and miracles are out there. Because I want it to be true. But the world is often cruel. It can't be that I'm special and have favor, and others that are kind are not special enough and lose their lives early or experience terrible things.
And I have experienced terrible things. But I wrote it off because God is good?
I have ADHD too. I'm very sensitive and emotional. (Sorry if my writing is all over the place.)
I think there needs to be an understanding that a lot of Christians are similar to me. It's like putting a baby in a lit room and then turning off the light. That may seem silly but I think it's why a lot of people cling to religion. It's hopeful. And it's what theyve been told first. Taking it away is shocking and scary.
I was hurt by a couple of Christians in a group. One of them was actually a pathological liar and would tell stories about me to other people. No matter how crazy they were other people believed her because they heard it from her first. No critical investigation or even hearing from my side and they took it as fact. It ended badly. I left the group. (thankfully she didn't change and now people can see I was telling the truth but I'm already hurt.)
Because of that I refuse to fall for the tricks they did. Its easy to believe in the best sounding thing. But I don't think it's right to. I think even though I may not see the damage, I think there is damage in believing in something that isn't true, just like there was with my friend. So I wanna know what real. Even if I get hurt by it.
At the same time, I think no matter what I may still be inclined to believe in the possibility of a God. Even if it's not sentient or humanoid. Could be a spirit of goodness in the world. I don't know.
Animals are so innocent to me. Wildlife and rivers and trees themselves fill me with wonder. I think there's something even if it's just my human mind conjuring up something. That is beautiful and uplifting about this place. I like to think the world is a bit magical. Maybe I'm childish in that but that I don't mind. It's speculation. But even in my dreaming, I want to know what is true and known. At least to know.
Idk Im dealing with a lot of emotions but I thought I would share. It's complicated.

I understand his disdain for the literalist/fundamentalist position. But that is a brand new doctrine that was pushed on Americans beginning in 1909. Throughout that last 2000 years, Christians who weren't shackled to "Every word of the KJV is literally true" knew about all of these historical issues and have very good answers. If we accept the stories in the "authentic" Pauline epistles of James and Peter and ignore Paul's magical Jesus in heaven, it comes down to: There was a man named Jesus who died sometime in the 30s CE, probably crucified by Romans, and left behind a movement that his brother James inherited. Paul wanted in on the movement and wanted to spread it to non-Jews, but he did some things that James didn't like and the latter started sending out letters everywhere telling his followers not to trust anyone not bearing his letter. That last part, recorded in Paul's tirades, argue for authenticity because there's no reason Paul would write something that discredits himself unless it was actually happening and he had to defend himself. At some point James sent his lieutenant Peter/Cephas to Paul to force him to reconcile and Paul decided to basically bring a huge bribe to Jerusalem in response. This is all we know of the "historical" James, Peter, and James' brother Jesus that can possibly be reconstructed from the most reliable account in the Bible. Not to say the account itself is genuine or unbiased, but it's the closest we can get to the original history.

Our ability to track the progression of his stories over several thousand years and attributions to him in documents written by later kings we CAN verify (like Nebuchadnezzar) favor his authenticity as a famous political leader in Mesopotamia who so impressed his culture they made him their shared superhero.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 4 роки тому +3

Well, no, you're overestimating the power of the Church back then because you're seeing the CURRENT version. Back in the 1st century they were just a bunch of renegade Jews getting kicked out of synagogues and some crazy adventurous Greco-Romans hanging out with Paul. There's no way people in their situation could have kept track of who wrote what and when. That's why ALL the attributions we have now is total bull. We do have better attributions once the Church got organized enough in the 4th century, and for the most part many of their documents since then can be verified from multiple sources in and out. The Old Testament is the one unquestionably "authentic" part of the modern Christian Bible in that we have a competing version in the Jewish Bible and actual archaeologically verifiable versions of every single book (and more) in the Dead Sea Scrolls. We know that part of the bible was already extant long before the Church.

The editing came much later, and we know they made a lot of edits because we can trace most of those from the remnants of older versions. We know that those edits only affected the NT because there are other rival groups that maintained their version of the OT and because we have actual versions of the OT back BEFORE Christianity ever existed at hand. We also know they generally hated fan fiction the exact same way megacorporations today do and actively sought to suppress such creations. That's why we only have four official gospels.

      @emperorofpluto 3 роки тому +3

Just in reference to your comments, *the Bible itself actually proves Jesus is not the Messiah and that the NT was written by Greek speaking gentiles*
The Codex Sinaiticus shows that, in addition to the 14,800+ differences with the current textus receptus of the Bible, *the early versions of the NT did not mention a virgin birth, a cross or a resurrection*
*The Jesus character was created by people ignorant of the geography and culture of the region, using a checklist of Messianic prophecies* - only they used the Greek Septuagint instead of the Masoretic Tanakh and *misunderstood a few key details* like the virgin birth. Which actually refers to a maid (ie girl) - not a virgin.
Because one of the Messianic prophecies says the Messiah will be a descendant of the mythical King David, the (almost certainly Greek-speaking gentile) authors of the NT invented not one, but TWO genealogies showing David to be an ancestor of Jesus.
A few problems: the two genealogies contradict each other and *both trace Jesus’ descent from David through his father Joseph*
This wasn’t too big a problem until the church decided to invent the “virgin birth” narrative.
The only thing the two conflicting genealogies agree on is that Jesus descended from King David through his father Joseph.
Which raises another problem - the Jewish Royal line determined hereditary through matrilineal descent - which one would assume a Jewish person living in Palestine would know.
So even though there are two genealogies meant to prove Jesus is a descendant of David, they appear to have been drawn up by someone unfamiliar with Judaism and Jewish culture.
And - of course - if Jesus is only related to David through his father Joseph, does this not contradict the claim that Mary was a virgin impregnated by god?
Therefore *Jesus is either a descendant of David and the son of Joseph which means he is not the son of god*
      OR
*Not a descendant of David because Joseph is not his father, because his father is god and Mary was a virgin*
In either case he’s *not the Messiah*
This idiotic contradiction only exists because *whoever invented the Jesus character was using the Greek Language Septuagint as their source for the prophecies, instead of the Masoretic text which would have been used by a Jew* and totally misunderstood the prophecy about the mother of the Messiah.
Long story short: *the Bible proves Jesus is.not the Messiah prophesied in the Tanakh*

Bear in mind that the mythical Robin Hood has very real sources in Hereward the Wake, and try to be a little less sure that everything is a lie.

*No.* The whole point of the New Testament is _not_ allegorical, it is very much about the literal resurrection of Jesus:
      *1 Corinthians 15: 14 - 15*
_And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ ..._
Basically, Paul is saying that the resurrection of Jesus _literally_ happened or they are all just bullsh_tters.
Easter is not an annual celebration of a allegory, it's celebrating a resurrection that the New Testament says actually did happen.
And given the utterly absurd nature of that resurrection claim and the rest of the magical details in the story, it clearly is a bullsh_t story.

@@pauligrossinoz Yeah. I mean, it's easy to take the stories of the Old Testament as mythology if you don't believe in them, but if you take the narrative to be more or less correct, then it's hard to isolate them without engaging in some kind of cognitive dissonance.

    Excellent video.
King Arthur etc - was a story told centuries after the time it refered to, of resistance to the invasion by the Anglo-Saxons into Britain. It may be based on dimly remembered and very misunderstood fact:
The Artorian Guard were based at Camelodium. They were one of the powerful mobile reserve forces backing up the Saxon Shore forts that were built by the Roman Empire along the east coast of Britain to protect against incursions by the Anglo-Saxons. With the collapse of Roman power in Britain and the forced retreat and marginalisation of the Romano-British people, heroes that once centuries before could be relied upon became romanticised. A military unit became one man.
