      The rims are brand new so they will be straight. If the tyre is damaged, should I get a new pair?

    • @CharlieRidesMTB
      @CharlieRidesMTB  3 роки тому +1

      Check the rim is definitely straight. Sometimes out of factory they’re a bit wobbly because of spoke tension. Take the tyre off the rim and then spin the rim to see if it’s straight. If it is straight and you think your tyre is damaged, try the process in the video again. When you’re pumping it up after putting LOTS of fairy liquid in, you want to make sure you pump it to a high pressure.

      Fairy liquid? Sorry is that just Water? I'm an idiot an never had a English lesson in my life (Norwegian) i just changed to winter Tyres because it's ice everywhere with snow on top i just saved the ones from last winter (missing a few spikes) anyways it looks absolutely insane i taken out the air several times trying to get it straight on and was about to give up before seeing your video i thougt Maybe the tyres itself had just been bent somehow by heat and drying or something i never had this problem with new stuff.. anyways is that just water? And does it leave any water inside when being done?

    Tip that i learned when putting the tire back on it to make sure the rest of the tire is in the centre of the rim and not against the wall of the rim and it should allow you to push the last part of the tyre on by hand

    Brilliant advice. It eventually seated after using this method, but it was very tight still. No idea how I'd manage on a long ride though if I was miles away from home. I guess a wobbly unseated ride would be the only option.

    I've been trying to seat the tyres on the rims of my gravel bike for ages. I was getting soooo frustrated about it that I almost bought new tyres until I watched this so simple yet effective way of solving the problem. I can't believe I didn't think of doing this in the first place

  • @carltongadgettmannprice352
    @carltongadgettmannprice352 6 місяців тому +2

    I use cooking oil instead of soap and water. They say that the water can eventually start rusting out the rim. Any type of oil will work just fine and I just happened to have some cooking oil nearby and a small brush to apply the oil. Over inflation uses the inter tube to raise the tire bead and to proper seat the tire into the rim's lips. Over inflat the tire with caution because too much over inflation can cause a tire to explode, therefore it is recommended to use safety glasses and ear protection.

    You are a smart cookie Charlie this made my tubless tyres on my road bike sit a treat even when i put a tpu inner tube in as i don't like tubess sealant that is heavy, messy and goes hard and doesn't work unless it's new. So thank you for the washing up liquid tip. Can't see why washing up liquid should accelerate aluminum oxidisation. Anything acidic or alkaline with an abundance of oxygen like salty water will corrode aluminium. Washing up liquid is ph neutral although as it is in water should not corrode any worse than water.
    Anyway excellent video. Thanks.

  • @ivelinbanchev4337
    @ivelinbanchev4337 4 роки тому +16

    Few advises:
    1. Remove tube's air before installing the tire. This will make it easier to set the tire in the rim. To make sure you don't pinch the inner tube while installing the tire, you can leave some air in the tube.
    2. Every rim has a slight bending right in the middle of it, where the spoke holes are. The purpose of it is to move tire's beads there while installing the tire itself. It will leave you more space and makes it easier to mount the tire.
    3. The soapy water is not actually good for the aluminium. It speeds up corrosion and weakens the material (Yes, aluminium corrodes too, slowly but still). It's better to use tire specific lube or if you like DIY methods, any kind of animal fat will do the job (pork work best).
    4. Last but not least, if you put too much pressure with the tire levers it can damage the beat and could potentially end up with bend tire. It happens often to Maxxis tires since they are pretty much garbage (beside the harden sidewall models).
    Thumbs up for you effort. Cheers!

I may try again later with a bucket :D it was midnight when I was doing it so I didn't want to make too many popping noises. Also, I was wondering - does the speed of pumping have any effect? At first I was pumping as fast as I could, now I felt like going slowly and allowing time to slowly equilibrate might be better. I also go to the max PSI allowed by tire, then let air out to get the pressure I want - more pressure means more force pushing the bead into the groove where it needs to sit, right?

      Yeah I have a 50mm stem and my seat in the normal place and it feels absolutely fine when riding, it’s just a bit tall when you try to put your legs down on the floor

    Did you have cushcore inserts in there when you did this? How hard is it to do with inserts?

    I admire your enthusiasm, but ou got the unmounting and mounting of the tire wrong. Squeeze the exterior/wire into the middle of the rim's V. This way you will be able to take it off or put it on without levers.
