It's funny to me that he brings up automobiles and autonomy. I see so many young people who are not interested in getting a driver's license or gaining any independence. They are over mothered in my estimation and not interested in leaving.
Automation has removed the need for that sense of independence but it is necessary towards the overall growth of the individual. If you went to any young person on earth and offered them a car they would take it. It's just as Michael N said, we're poor. However you are right in that the lack of need for that independence is what drives our seemingly lack of interest in moving further as individuals and promotes the want of having someone do it for you. However, if you put a mirror in front of your victim so he can watch himself die, that's Evil. not much room for a different perception there.
