The last song, “Neither a borrower, nor a lender be” has been solidly in my mental harddrive since childhood. I can’t tell you how many times that song has drifted into my consciousness and then stuck there like a merciless ear worm. So glad to see this scene again!

A few years back I was listening to a classical music station when they were playing, Carmen. When finished, the normally aloof DJ, stated, "Who hears this and thinks about the Gilligan's island's episode? I do! I do!'. I had to smile because that was exactly what I was thinking of as well!

Tina Louise was probably the only accomplished singer in the cast, that aside, this is one of the best episodes in the series. Especially when they find the money near the end of the picture and he counts everyone who will get a share. He starts off counting himself first and he then counts himself again as the last one! lol also in the beginning of the film opening theme when the movie’s major stars kept switching their names to get top billing and before the cartoon characters finish, he puts his name at the top billing lol. I remember this scene fondly as it gave me a head start on Hamlet years before we studied it in my English class in high school as a senior. Whenever I hear the music from Carmen, am reminded of these lyrics. Actually it's uncertain as to whether Ophelia's drowning was a suicide or an accident (she's in a mad state and crawls out onto a limb which broke and knocked her into the river - and with all the heavy clothes people wore back then, they got soaked and made her sink like a rock - that's the description Queen Gertrude gave which she probably heard from someone who tried in vain to save her). There's a later scene where gravediggers said she wouldn't be getting Christian burial except that she was a noblewoman - Catholics back then refused to give people who committed or might have committed suicide a Christian burial - they might still be doing that kind of refusal - you'd think they would give someone the benefit of the doubt if only for the family's sake. Her brother Laertes is later arguing with the priest that she's not getting a full Christian burial but the priest says she's lucky to get what she's getting since "her death was doubtful". Earlier in the play when Hamlet tells Ophelia to get thyself to a "notary", they were using it to replace the word nunnery that was in Shakespeare - that word wouldn't have passed sensors since Shakespeare wasn't referring to a convent but in his day the word nunnery meant house of prostitution. In Shakespeare's play, everyone is dead at the end with the exception of Hamlet's friend Horatio who indicated he also wanted to die - but Hamlet's dying wish was for Horatio to live and tell their story to others.

Gilligan: "But Skipper, I'm sure we'll need full make up and costumes for an entire Shakespeare play eventually. It's bound to come in handy"
... And truly, Gilligan was right indeed

Loved growing up with this show. These actors were all VERY talented. Being older, it's easier to recognize. Great chemistry. The very small expressions by Alan Hale were always priceless.
Even if she was difficult, Tina Louise was very underrated and underappreciated for what she brought to the scenes.

@hbofbyu1 Nobody ever said Tina Louise was difficult to work with at the CBS Studio Center between 1964 and 1967. A UA-cam upload of Russell Johnson reminiscing about the cast of the series does not include anything negative about Tina.
Between 1964 and 1967, nobody knew that syndicated reruns in the 1970s were going to become so popular that reunions would make profits. Therefore, nobody knew in the 1960s that Tina was going to turn down job offers for the reunions.

That movie was also the only time Bette Davis or Errol Flynn sang on screen.

What is the connection between "Gilligan's Island" and 40 years? Give up? In the episode in which the Skipper develops an allergy (to Gilligan), he asks the Professor to level with him as to the nature of his sickness; specifically, how much time he has left. The Professor says, "Around 40 years." The Skipper panics and then, when what the Professor said sinks in, he asks quizzically, "Forty years?!"; and then the Professor explains that the Skipper is beset by a simple allergy.
      .
At any rate, 40 years is way too long not to see "Gilligan's," sir -- please buy the 3-season set on DVD -- it's worth it, and you'll love it . . . all over again! :)

    Hamlet sings:
I ask to be, or not to be. A rogue or pleasant slave is what you see.
A boy who loves his mother’s knee, and so I ask to be or not to be.
So hear my plea, I beg of thee, and say you see a little hope for me.
To fight or flee, to fight or flee, I ask myself to be or not to be.
Hamlet’s Mother and Hamlet’s Uncle sing:
He asks to be or not to be, a rogue and pleasant slave is what you see.
    Hamlet’s Mother sings:
My son who loves his mother’s knee,
Hamlet’s Mother and Hamlet’s Uncle sing:
and so he asks to be or not to be.
We hear his plea, we beg of thee, and say we see a little hope for he.
    Hamlet sings:
To fight or flee, to fight or flee, I ask myself
    Hamlet & Hamlet’s Mother & Hamlet’s Uncle sing:
to be or not to be.
Hamlet: Hark, I do believe I hear the fair Ophelia!
Ophelia: My Lord Hamlet is troubled.
Hamlet: Yea, verily! My heart is heavy. I cannot marry thee, Ophelia.
    Ophelia: Oh!
Hamlet There is nothing left for you, but to get thee to a notorary.
Ophelia: Ah, my poor Hamlet! Ah, my poor Hamlet!
    Ophelia sings:
Hamlet dear, your problem is clear: avenging thy father’s death.
You seek to harm your uncle and mom, but you’re scaring me to death.
While I die and sigh and cry that love is everything.
You’re content to go to catch the conscience of the king.
Since the date when your dad met his fate, you just brood, and you don’t touch your food.
You hate your ma, mad at my pa.
You’ll kill the king or some silly thing.
So, Hamlet, Hamlet do be a lamb.
    Let rotten enough alone.
From Ophelia no one can steal ya.
    You’ll always be my own.
Leave the gravedigger’s scene, if you know what I mean.
Danish pastry for two, for me, for you!
Hamlet: In truth, Ophelia, you have said a mouthful.
Ophelia: Hamlet, I have so much more to offer. But hark, methinks me hear the heavy footsteps of my father Polonius.
Hamlet: And the laughter of your brother and my friend Laertes.
Ophelia: Oh, they must not find us here, but where to hide?
Hamlet: Hide anyplace, but don’t go near the water!
Laertes: Father, my ship sails at the tide.
Polonius: A moment my son, for I have something to tell you.
Laertes: I ask only for my allowance.
Polonius: Ah, but I shall give you something far more valuable: advice.
Laertes You know how much wine you can buy in Paris with advice?
Polonius: Paris is a wild and wicked town, and you are but a young and innocent boy.
Laertes: (aside) Oh, could I tell him a few stories!
Polonius: Heed my words, Laertes, and you will be safe.
Laertes: (aside) Unless I listen, I won’t get my spending money, so I’ll listen, I’ll listen.
    Polonius sings:
Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
Do not forget stay out of debt.
Think twice and take this good advice from me:
    guard that old solvency.
There’s just one other thing you ought to do:
to thine own self be true.
    The whole Hamlet cast sings:
Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
Do not forget stay out of debt.

Since "The Producers" didn't start filming till six months after this episode aired, it would have been cool if one of the proposals Max and Leo look at would been 'a musical version of Hamlet" written by Harold Hecuba

An underrated episode and still ONE of my favorites even to this day. A classic, one of just pure entertainment.
I remember coming from school and watching this T.V. show everyday. I did meet the Skipper (Alan Hale) at a celebrity golf tournament at Riverside, CA.in the 60's. He was like as seen on television, very friendly even to a young kid.

Alan Hale, unlike some of the cast who dreaded being typecast, actually thrived on it. He even capitalized on his Skipper image by opening a restaurant where he'd greet guests in his Skipper outfit. He also used to make public appearances dressed as the Skipper, especially to children's hospitals. Once he gave extra comfort to a child fan who had pending surgery - this was at the time he was privately dying of cancer. He was truly one in a billion.

Mrs. Howell (Natalie Shafer) could not sing but the rest could carry a tune. This was a classic episode. Whenever I give the advice "neither a borrower nor a lender be" I end up thinking of this episode of Gilligan's Island.

Of the relatively few "Gilligan's Island" episodes I saw as a kid, this was by far my favorite. My mom played the piano, and after seeing this episode, I would start singing the lyrics from the songs in it any time she played any of the tunes.

EVERY SINGLE TIME in Formula 1 during the podium celebration after they pop champagne, that last song would play after the first minute so I have to stick around so I can sing the Gilligan’s Island lyrics over it: “Do not forget, stay out of debt!”
It was the 90’s when my mom first introduced me to the VHS tapes of the show and it became one of those inside joke, household tunes. We would sing those lyrics over the original song every time we’d stumble upon hearing it.
I’m 33 now, still singing it every other week 😂

A good idea for the castaways to do that play to convince Harold Hecuba to let Ginger have a part in his movie instead of her choosing to stay on the island alone because Hecuba laughed at her, they should've stayed awake all night in case Hecuba was going to leave them behind. Ginger must've cried very hard after she and her friends have been double-crossed and Hecuba didn't care that the castaways' families were worried sick when they heard there was no sign of the Minnow. Hecuba could've been a big hero instead of being a thief.

This is one of my FAVOURITE episodes! BEFORE I found out that Ginger (Tina Louise) flubbed her lines for real..(from Sherwood Schwartz the REAL producer from Gilligan’s Island)...notice Gilligan’s (Bob Denver) smile at her..I had a feeling she actually DID forget her line...the reaction from Bob was cute to watch.
