  • Happy 50th Anniversary tribute to the wonderful television series: Gilligan's Island.
This short video clip is posted here at Television Vanguard for not-for-profit fan tribute, viewer enjoyment only. No copyright infringement is intended. Thank you and enjoy.
Gilligan's Island has had an incredible journey over the decades - from its inception in the mind of Sherwood Schwartz, to his battles with CBS executives to get the series on the air back in 1964, the three year run on network television in the mid-1960s, to television syndication phenomenon, leading to today, where the series has become an iconic part of the American pop culture - and still being shown five nights a week on cable-TV via the 'MeTV' channel.
The series will soon be celebrating it's 50th anniversary in 2014 [in fact, the pilot was filmed in November, 1963). To commemorate that upcoming 50th anniversary, I'll be placing some Gilligan video clips here at Television Vanguard from time to time throughout the year.
Dawn Wells has been asked over the years what were her favorite episodes, and she's mentioned 'The Second Ginger Grant' [season 3/episode 92] and 'The Postman Cometh' [season 2/episode 54]. Dawn has also mentioned this episode, 'And Then There Were None [season 3/episode 81] as a personal favorite. The episode [first broadcast on CBS on December 5, 1966] included a dream sequence, always a favorite with the cast, and in this particular dream sequence, Dawn got to play poor cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle.
In this film clip, Gilligan (Bob Denver) dreams that he has become a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as his fellow castaways on the island begin to disappear one by one. In Gilligan's dream, Mary Ann [Dawn] plays Dr. Gilligan's ardent supporter who hires Mary Poppin [Mrs. Howell/Natalie Schaffer] to act as Dr. Gilligan's defense attorney. The Skipper [Alan Hale] plays the baliff, Mr. Howell [Jim Backus] plays the judge. The Professor [Russell Johnson] and Ginger [Tina Louise] are also included in the dream as the prosecuting attorney and star witness respectively.
The Gilligan's Island series [3 seasons] is available via Warner Co. DVD at Amazon and B&N. There are also a wonderful set of books and autobiographies in various forms that are available online [most, I believe, are now out-of-print so may only be available from second-sources online] from show creator Sherwood Schwartz, and from most of the cast: Bob Denver, Jim Backus, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson and a cookbook from Dawn Wells.
Dawn is working on an new autobiography, and the book should be coming out soon. I'll post more information on the book as it becomes available.
    **********************
Update - September 17, 2014: Dawn's book, "What Would Mary Ann Do?" has arrived !!! She is on her book tour over the next few weeks. To find out more, check out amazon.com for more details on the book, and for more details on Dawn's book tour and how to perhaps obtain a personally signed copy, visit Dawn's web site : 'Many Faces of Dawn Wells' -
    dawnwells.com/t... .
    ***************************
In the meantime, enjoy this scene from the dream sequence and Dawn's Eliza Doolittle; this one is for you Dawn .... Happy Birthday!!

I understand this is Dawn Wells' all-time favorite episode of the series, as well. The marvelous thing about these fantasy sequences is they gave audiences the opportunity to see what gifted character actors they all were.

I thought the MaryAnn Forbisher, young Dr. Young episode was Dawn Wells' fave. You may be correct though.
I believe Bob Denver's favorite was when he was a vampire and Tina Louise's favorite was Eva Grub.
      Natalie Schaefer's was Cinderella.
Jim Backus was the Two Mr. Howells. Not sure I remember the great Alan Hale's favorite. I think it was either as the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk or Hamlet.
My favorite line of the dream sequences:
      We don't have a balcony...YOU SCHNOOK!!!

Hi @@antonewilson4310! The only reason I know "And Then There Were None" was Dawn's favorite episode is on those occasions she answered fan questions. Someone asked her which GI episode was her favorite and ATTWN was her response. That's cool about the other cast members' favorites. Tina Louise was excellent as Eva Grub!

This skit has a surprisingly subtle touch (especially for a "Gilligan's Island" script). "Dr. Gilligan" enters carrying a lily, and is hooted at derisively by an angry gallery. It's awfully hard to believe that this wasn't meant as an oblique reference to the 1895 trial of Oscar Wilde, who used the lily as a personal symbol, was jeered and howled at by an angry mob, and who was, in a sense, tried for being a sort of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde": leading a double life as a sexually active gay man in an intolerant society.
Unfortunately, this UA-cam segment cuts off before the funniest line in the sketch. Ginger testifies as the seductive "Lady In Red", who claims to have witnessed Dr. Gilligan's crimes:
DR. GILLIGAN: "Lies, lies, nothing but lies! I've never seen this woman before in my life!"
JUDGE HANGING (looking down at Ginger's legs): "Then you've missed plenty, buster."

    • @antonewilson4310
      @antonewilson4310 Рік тому +3

Jim Backus was the king of the embellished line and the Ad-lib to the point that Natalie Schaefer, who usually played off him, was intimidated by his ability to improvise and steal the scene. The way he leeringly said you've missed plenty buster displayed his brilliance. He was even funny as the feckless father in Rebel Without a Cause. A brilliant man. Were he active today he'd be all over the different media platforms,.

Oh Miss Dawn Wells in peace!
How I would gracefully trade places with you right now......... so much pain to bare and massive PTSD from my childhood!
I'm sitting here in my home (my car) that's been for the last 21 yrs, going on 22. I wonder so much what your life must've been like, such talent, lady like personality, sweetness beyond galore, beautiful in every sense of the word, charm, witt, intelligent, loved by millions of people and I can go on!
If I could talk to you now, I'd ask you;"what are your 5 most special times in your life?" There would of course be so many, that you could write a book just on these things.
I'm almost in tears because, #1) your passing has massively affected my life, much like Robin Williams passing too!
#2) I have this beautiful little fur baby ( now I am crying) and she recently was diagnosed with cancer and a liver enzyme health issue. She's almost 10 yrs old but she's been through so much with me LIVING in my car. She's so precious to me!
She's so filled with love, everyone always says how sweet she is, she tries to still be playfull but, I know she's in pain (just like me) but no matter how bad I feel, she still wants to cheer me up.
She sleeps with me, she's always on my lap or wanting to be held. When she's on my lap, she'll plop her head on my chest, tilt her head up and look at me with her beautiful pearly brown eyes and I know what she's telling me! "DADDY, I LOVE YOU AND IT'S GOING TO BE OK!"
I DON'T HAVE ANY FAMILY ANYMORE BUT, SHES MY FAMILY...........
WHEN SHE IS TOO ILL AND SICK, I KNOW I'LL DO THE RIGHT THING, TO STOP HER SUFFERING!
THIS I WILL DO TO FIND PEACE AND BE FREE FROM THIS MASSIVE DEEP PAIN IM IN! I WILL END MY LIFE, SO I CAN BE WITH HER AND MAYBE BY CHANCE, TO SEE YOU AGAIN, MISS WELLS.......... ...
MAY THE SPIRIT OF PEACE GIVE YOU COMFORT AND MAY THE SPIRIT OF LOVE GIVE YOU GREAT BOUNDS OF LOVE TO HOLD YOU TIGHT BECAUSE, YOU ARE SO EVER GREATLY MISSED................
I DIDN'T KNOW YOU PERSONALLY BUT, I KNEW, MARY ANN SUMMERS AND EVERY PART OF HER IS WHO EVERYONE LOVED AND ADORED!!!!!!!!
"MISS WELLS, IF I COULD ONLY GET "1" CHANCE TO MEET YOU, WOW..............
YOUR PASSING WAS WAY TO EARLY AND BROKEN HEARTS ARE STILL BROKEN!!!!!!!!!
MAY THE GREAT NATIVE AMERICAN SPIRITS PROTECT YOU, LOVE YOU AND FILL YOUR HEART WITH GREAT JOY BECAUSE, OUR HEARTS ARE FILLED WITH GREAT JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😇
THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE MEMORIES OUR HEARTS HAVE TO KEEP WITH US BECAUSE; YOU ARE THE BEAUTIFUL MISS DAWN WELLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😭

Gilligans Island was doing mashups 50 years before UA-camrs! In one sketch, they managed to desecrate Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, My Fair Lady, and Mary Poppins. The Skipper was great as the bailiff, and Mary Ann was great as the cockney flower girl. They both put on great British accents. Makes me wonder if Dawn Wells could have replaced Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

castletriglav, there's no need to be rude. They made an observation about the roll. While it seems unusual there are people out there who may have never watched "My Fair Lady" or perhaps watched this episode that didn't connect the two. I grew up watching these on TV and was also blessed to watch many older movies as well back but I hadn't noticed the connection as a kid.

Thank you for the feedback. We wanted to play the entire dream sequence, and then some, but we ran into a bit of a licensing issue with the DVD-digital content. We run into that from time to time, particularly with DVD quality content. We had to trim the length of the video in order to reach compliance with the UA-cam team (who were getting some feedback from the Warner DRM criteria requirements). This clip is presented often (always?) with embedded commercial as well to help pay for the use of this clip back to the production company owner (Warner). Interesting footnote here... originally United Artists was the production company behind Gilligan's Island. UA was purchased by MGM (early 1970's?), and then MGM purchased by Ted Turner for TBS in early 1980s(?) Then Turner/CNN/TBS/TNT was purchased by Time Warner in the 1990s, then merged in 2000 with AOL. We believe that with the recently approved purchase of Warner by AT&T (2018/19), we think the licensing of GIlligan's Island is now in the hands of AT&T and Warner. Ahh, the world of big business. We will continue to do our best to bring Gilligan's Island to the hearts and minds of UA-cam viewers as often and as complete as we possibly can. Best Regard, Television Vanguard Staff
