Chrissie Hynde is truly a legend in her own time. I too grew up in that exact era and time. Now, I am 73 looking back at History, I'll never forget it.
Not only is she one of the coolest rock chicks in the planet, but she truly signifies what a "rock chick" is---strong, forthright, a supreme songwriter and simply badass! And she's not the one anyone should fuck with. I love her "fuck you" attitude. If you don't like her, it don't matter to her. And if you do, then "come on in and enjoy my music!" On that note, I can imagine the Chrissie Hynde biopic (I'm actually OVER biopics, actually). And the actress to play her, no one other than Gina Gershon.
Chrissie is wonderfully articulate and a masterful songwriter and performer. A vibe to behold and transparent heart. Much love and respect...God bless y'all...
This woman is my hero!!!!! She makes no apologies for who she was or is she is honest straight forward and is a rock and roll goddess she also stands up for animals which makes her even more BITCHIN!!!!!! You go,girl
"Comfort does not spawn creativity." A truth from a beautiful soul and a beautiful, confident, strong woman. Love her more and more these last 35 years...
Jeffrey Collier I don’t necessarily believe that. The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin wrote some of their best material after they became “comfortable”, for example.
Yeah, Chrissie. There aren't a lot of singers with that vocal agility you talk or. Brass is what they call brass knuckles, so listen to it to find Crissie's personality a little better. Yeah that voice - it is contralto. She was the feminist I want . . . for president, just like her voice and vocal vignettes. She should have run for prez last year - she was sharp, fearless, true to her ideals, and incorruptible. But she just wanted to play guitar. A better fate. We knew she wrote the songs. Turns out she's almost 70 or so now &so glad she's still growling. Chrissie WAS wrong about punk rockers not knowing music - I almost moved into a place on the side of Mt Sutro with some. Had a musical background , and walked in - they were playing Bach! She made it when we were up in Mammoth skiing, climbing, escapin' the chain gang.
I could listen to her for hours...I love her honesty and unapologetic account of those times.....in a business that's become very fake and generic it is so refreshing to listen to someone in music who has integrity ....She was part of a very small group of female artists to front a band....they changed the rules...they created something new instead of just reacting to what was already there....Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, Siouxsie Sioux and Polly Styrene ....each one unique in style and sound....the opposite of generic...they fought against sexism, they fought against the status quo and now they fight against ageism....Legends...real ones...not X Factor ones
+Redcrop Uk Yes, def! Don't forget Joan Jett/The Runaways, The Slits, The Raincoats, Pauline Murray, B-52s, Exene Cervenka, Lydia Lunch, Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, Lene Lovich, and Nina Hagen - The original Lady Gaga.
I thought he did a good job. She's kinda a tough nut to crack and as honest as she is (and I loved the book, love her music, and loved the interview, you could kinda see her jut her chin out, figuratively.. here and there, which is fine by me.
Silas Marner thats for sure. At the beginning it sounded a little too political or analyzed from the interviewer especially regarding the drugs part. Chrissie chose her words well here and it got better. So many girls out there obsessed with the social media culture should listen to her. Inspirational to say the least.
HAD to be good! Considering the footsteps he was following in (Jian Ghomeshi). Ghomeshi, despite anything else about him, was a GREAT interviewer (even according to Barbara Walters). So this new interviewer has big shoes to fill! :)
"Said it out loud, out loud in a crowd" that lyric in Talk of the Town is so Dr Seuss and at the same time, sort of Ian Anderson comical, it's perfect homage to a deeper legacy of art in such a simple, playful rhyme. That's just one example of the genius of Chrissie Hynde.
The Pretenders played a classic venue Massey Hall in Toronto years ago, and I happened to drive by just before the show and wished I had a ticket. Chrissie and the band were one of my favourites, and she still has that magical voice. I pulled up and there was one scalper left, and he had a single, front row center balcony ticket. Not easy to sell single tickets, and so the price was right. A n hour later I found myself in the best seat in the house. It was incredible! Something I will never forget.... This is a great interview and now I know more about one of my heroes! Shad did a great interview and we don't see much of that. He really let this be about Chrissie.I just saw a video with Chrissie and Stevie Nicks on tour and they are both such legends...
Alright I watched 20 min of this and like Chrissy I was in a band expecting to make it big a few yrs later. This interviewer is amazing asking all the right questions. Gotta respect someone who does his job. Amazing interview
Ahhh...The Chamber's Brothers! Loved them back in the day! Listened to their great hit, "Time" when I was gettin' stoned in 'Nam. Great interview and a great interviewer. I really enjoyed listening to this.
25:30 "If you don't take no for an answer, you can always get what you want." -Chrissie Hynde One of the most profound truths ever uttered by human lips.
Chrissie, telling it like it was. I'm five years younger than her and grew up in the same musician/drug/radio lifestyle that was the Cleveland/Akron suburban vortex. Saw punk being invented in front of my very own eyes. Chrissie is an archetype proto-punk, Northeast Ohio Division. East 55th and Euclid Ave., indeed.
Watching this in late 2023; this was a great interview and the location set up looks beautiful. Now, about Chrissie, I love her and I love her music. Please tour Texas!!! I've never seen her perform and that needs to happen. She is an absolutely brilliant and sincere human being.
Chrissie you have got to read all these comments posted here , you have to see just how much you have moved people ! comments , including mine, you are beautiful in evry way please do not stop singing / performing you do bring great cheer to many hearts !
Gotta give some major credit to Shad for knowing the topic, made the interview enjoyable. Chrissie is just given, expected her great input and coherent presentation.
Freaking interviewer is as good as Chrissie. And her brother plays in one of the greatest bands ever - I'm serious - after 50 years they are still killing it. It's amazing. THE NUMBERS BAND from Kent Ohio.
I've loved Chrissie as long as I can remember. Whenever I'd hear the Pretenders, I would have this odd thought: I'd think "I hope her parents are proud of her." She deserves that. I hope she got it.
What a fascinating interview. I remember buying the Pretenders first album at age 16 and was blown away how, even now, it doesn't fit into any single category. Even reviews of her current tour opening for Stevie Nicks right now leaves present day reporters sputtering, trying to put their fingers on it, but they miss the point. Excellent interviewer (way to go dude). I hope Chrissie has much more to sing & say in the future. XOXOXOXO
Chrissie is like Barbara Stanwyck's long lost daughter. Watch Ladies of Leisure (1930). I love Chrissie since I was 14 in 1980. Living in Columbus, Ohio I identified with her escape plan as a musician myself. She's a hero of mine big time...that voice!!
What did you think of the show. It was sold out and like many others stood outside to hear the show which surprised how well we could hear. Her voice sounded great. I saw them a few times prior and never disappointed
Chrissie is as sharp as they get and of course she is with the quality of sound she creates... The Pretenders are outstanding live and a must if you haven't had the honor yet...
Chrissie we've appreciated you through the years - Ohio transplants in California. You've always stood out as a genuine unique creative human who dared to be yourself.
What an amazing interview! Chrissie is one of the most charismatic, honest, complex, and lovely personalities in all of music. I feel so lucky to have grown up in her time.
He's one of the best interviewers I've ever seen. Where has this guy been? Fantastic job. It's really rare these days to see an interviewer who is as prepared as he was. He knew all about the book, and pretty much all about her. Really a pleasure to watch.
I loved listening to Chrissie talk about the early times in Akron, Ohio. Radio back then was not pre-programmed and was not owned by corporations. The disc jockeys could play whatever they wanted, in whatever towns or cities they lived in. (When I was a kid, I did the same thing late at night - laying in bed with a portable AM/FM radio). She is so fascinating to listen to. She definitely chased after her dream and she speaks from experience and with authority. Her life experience musically and emotionally is incredible and I cannot get enough of this woman and her storytelling. She was beautiful then and she's beautiful now, inside and out. Brutally honest, intelligent, and thoroughly captivating. An excellent interview.
No one in rock has got me to laugh and/or cry as much as Chrissie Hynde. For example: in "Pretenders" she took the most impossible lyrics for song, and she yet twisted and phrased the words and produced a classic in the genre. Brilliant! All these decades later, I'm so happy she's articulately explained what was going on in her youth - about her herself, and the culture. Thanks to Mr Power for the interview.
This book was a wake-me-up. Loved the late great Lemmy's advice when she was't sure how to get her band together! Sobering book as well- to value your body and life. All one really has- true.
The interviewer is actually well prepared, did his reading and asks interesting questions. It makes a world of a difference from what you normally see. Great!
Chrissie was a rock band's leader when few women was there doing this. She is a great instrumentist, one of the first rock n roll singer, and for her all of this sound so natural, so simple. Thanks for existing, Chrissie.

Ladies and gentlemen, May I present the incomparable CHRISSIE HYNDE! Saw her 3 Times back in the day. Had a full-size poster plastered on my fridge. Anyone who criticized it/her got kicked the he'll out!
Because she is from Ohio many people don't know that Chrissie was part of the early UK punk scene so she was good friends with Joe (I believe she attended his funeral). She worked at Malcolm McClaren's SEX shop and even tried to get Sid and Johnny Rotten to marry her so she could stay in England. She was part of a short lived band with Mick Jones of The Clash
Great interview! I've been a fan of the music for for many years. This interview gives a nice window into her professional persona and personal attitudes as well. Thanks for posting this.......
Crissie has one of the most unique voices in music. Few mysicians today have great voices, instead they're great dancers. The music industry neefs to return to music and shelve choreographed routines to broadway
Time Has Come Today. I saw The Pretenders about 15ish years ago in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom. Chrissie, your band was really tight and it was one of the concerts I include in my "best of" list.
Very, very good interview! Sorta like enjoying interviews with Grace Slick...smart and talented, with some humor and a lot of honesty. Adult. And yes, the interviewer was very very good. A rare thing nowadays.Thank you!
I've adored her from day 1, sharing being born in the same decade, her fearlessness, her insight into how America started to crumble back in the 70's, her fabulous band and music. And maybe this was a blip of a flub, but, at around 34 second in she says she was 14 when the first Beatle's album came out. Uh, she was born in 1951. I'm gonna let it slide, because she's always been a woman who shunned society's rules for us, which at that time, was a much bigger uphill battle than it is today. I'm still a huge of for her outspokenness especially as she always advocates for women's power and truth telling. And if you read her book, you'll learn she faked it till she made it and is unabashed to admit so. There are those in life you have the perfect synchronicity of kismet. She's one of them. Her book is testimony to that.
Chrissie Hynde is truly a legend in her own time. I too grew up in that exact era and time. Now, I am 73 looking back at History, I'll never forget it.
40 years later and I still love this woman.
Chrissie is, without question, one of the coolest people on the planet! Thank you for posting this interview.

I saw Pretenders in '79 at a small club when they toured in a yellow school bus. They were great. Played their rock hearts out.
She's just an amazing person!! Loaded with talent, stunning voice, gifted songwriter and huge stage presence but, after all, just a great person!

Great interview. I really dig her interviews. She is a iconic artist and a straight shooter, plus she still looks great.
i know it's edited but he let's her do most of the talking, seems engaged and keeps the energy up
It's clear he did his research and is skilled at facilitating.

Nice words, I agree completely!

Jeffrey Collier absolutely great quote I thought as well!!!
@@MsAppassionata You’re correct. Creativity, by its very nature, can’t be constrained by one pithy saying, however funky it sounds on the surface.
Chrissie Hynde's singing voice is my favorite in rock. Brass in Pocket -- range, emotional expression, tone, control. Top shelf.
Yeah, Chrissie. There aren't a lot of singers with that vocal agility you talk or.

Wow. Christie Hynde is still on top of her game. What a hero of music.

If you love music and rock and roll you cannot help but love Chrissie . I have been crushing on her since the late 70 s . I know join the club right ?
Was at the Bowie concert in Cleveland she spoke of, his first in the US. It was truly “life changing” and so was and is Chrissie.
I just seen her on Wednesday and she is still hot good and very relatable in Yucca Valley so glad I went she did an encore very cool
I love her. She's been known to be a difficult person to interview. He's a master.
Sporting the Joe Strummer shirt. This lady is real rock n' roll.
This interviewer is actually quite amazing in drawing out great stories from Chrissie. Cheers to him and to Chrissie for a great interview.

Her book is testimony to that.
Love her!
Apart from all else, she has a great speaking-voice!
I love this interview, keep coming back to it !!
Of all, Chrissie Hynde is my very favorite. She 's not wanting to shine alone but be part of something bigger. That's me, too, and lots of us.
Such an amazing human being! Just love this woman!
